NASA Past, Present, and Future: The Use of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) Electronics in Space

NASA has a long history of using commercial grade electronics in space. In this presentation we will provide a brief history of NASA's trends and approaches to commercial grade electronics focusing on processing and memory systems. This will include providing summary information on the space hazards to electronics as well as NASA mission trade space. We will also discuss developing recommendations for risk management approaches to Electrical, Electronic and Electromechanical (EEE) parts usage in space. Two examples will be provided focusing on a near-earth Polar-orbiting spacecraft as well as a mission to Mars. The final portion will discuss emerging trends impacting usage.

Single Event Testing of SDRAM, DDR2 and DDR3 Memories

SEE test results are presented for SDRAM, DDR2, and DDR3. No tested devices exhibited SEL. SBUs were observed, but no MBUs were observed in data words. SEFI data were taken at low and high speed.

Total Ionizing Dose Response of SDRAM, DDR2 and DDR3 Memories

Total Ionizing Dose response (ID) of SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory), DDR2 (Double Data Rate2) and DDR3 (Double Data Rate3) memories is reported in static bias, and auto refresh modes. Data analysis reveals some types of memory have significant increases in stuck bits during TID exposure when refreshed.

Recent Advances in Commercial Memories and Potential Contribution to GN&C Miniaturation

The last few years have seen a surge in technology, device, and architecture introductions in commercial memories such as SDRAM and NAND driven by the explosion of handheld and portable electronics. Some of the resultant devices provide high density in very small and light packages, which may be possible to leverage for the miniaturization of future GN&C systems in addition to providing considerable memory capacity to enable advanced capabilities such as image-based navigation or adaptive/autonomous operations. We will show that these advanced SDRAM and NAND technologies are worth serious consideration for the next generation of GN&C needs by highlighting reliability and radiation effects results from some of these devices.

NEPP DDR Device Reliability FY13 Report

This document reports the status of the NEPP Double Data Rate (DDR) Device Reliability effort for FY2013. The task targeted general reliability of > 100 DDR2 devices from Hynix, Samsung, and Micron. Detailed characterization of some devices when stressed by several data storage patterns was studied, targeting ability of the data cells to store the different data patterns without refresh, highlighting the weakest bits.
