An extensometer for global measurement of bone strain suitable for use in vivo in humans

An axial extensometer able to measure global bone strain magnitudes and rates encountered during physiological activity, and suitable for use in vivo in human subjects, is described. The extensometer uses paired capacitive sensors mounted to intraosseus pins and allows measurement of strain due to bending in the plane of the extensometer as well as uniaxial compression or tension. Data are presented for validation of the device against a surface-mounted strain gage in an acrylic specimen under dynamic four-point bending, with square wave and sinusoidal loading inputs up to 1500 mu epsilon and 20 Hz, representative of physiological strain magnitudes and frequencies. Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) between extensometer and strain gage ranged from 0.960 to 0.999. Mean differences between extensometer and strain gage ranged up to 15.3 mu epsilon. Errors in the extensometer output were directly proportional to the degree of bending that occurs in the specimen, however, these errors were predictable and less than 1 mu epsilon for the loading regime studied. The device is capable of tracking strain rates in excess of 90,000 mu epsilon/s.

Clip-On Extensometer

Flexural clamp eliminates problems of operator variability. Extensometer opens and closes like clothespin and placed easily on specimen. Dimensions of block specimen are 1 by 1 by 2.2 inches (2.54 by 2.54 by 5.59 centimeters). By constructing central flexure units of various widths, one adapts extensometer to handle specimens ranging from thin strips to those many inches thick. New design reduces measurement errors caused by variability among test operators.

Extensometer automatically measures elongation in elastomers

Extensometer, with a calibrated shaft, measures the elongation of elastomers and automatically records this distance on a chart. It is adaptable to almost any tensile testing machine and is fabricated at a relatively low cost.

Temperature controlled strain gaged extensometer

Temperature controlled strain-gaged extensometer measures longitudinal and girth deflections of pressure vessels in excess of one percent strain during pressurization and depressurization with cryogenic fluids at cryogenic temperatures. The device is of beryllium-copper strips.

Conductive elastomeric extensometer

An extensometer was used for measuring surface area changes of the human body caused by expansion and contraction of the body. A relatively thin and wide strain responsive conductive elastomeric band was adapted for application to a part of the body, such as around a limb or the trunk of the body. The elastomeric band is incorporated as a resistor in a balanced bridge circuit. Expansion or contraction of the portion of the body on which the elastomeric band is applied causes a change in the resistance of the band and a resultant imbalance of the bridge circuit. The output of the amplifier in volts is suitable for proving the desired reading through a recorder, oscilloscope or voltmeter.

Amplifying ribbon extensometer for measuring film and fabric strain

Variations of a low-cost amplifying linear threshold extensometer are presented in detail for high or low strain applications. Derivations of scale relationships and extraction forces are included with experimental correlations and analyses given on performance, attachment problems, gain selection, gage and base material compatibility, and zero setting techniques. Flight applications of unamplified gages on parawing deployment tests are noted. The amplified gages perform accurately in laboratory tests and further experience is needed on performance under dynamic environments.

Laser extensometer

A drift compensated and intensity averaged extensometer for measuring the diameter or other properties of a substantially cylindrical sample based upon the shadow of the sample is described. A beam of laser light is shaped to provide a beam with a uniform intensity along an axis normal to the sample. After passing the sample, the portion of the beam not striking said sample is divided by a beam splitter into a reference signal and a measurement signal. Both of these beams are then chopped by a light chopper to fall upon two photodiode detectors. The resulting ac currents are rectified and then divided into one another, with the final output being proportional to the size of the sample shadow.

An extensometer for axial strain measurement at high temperature

Most existing strain measuring instruments, important for the investigation of the mechanical behavior of metals at high temperature, have temperature, strain range, and size limitations. In this short note the authors give the design and construction of an extensometer with sufficient dynamic range and good stability over long periods of time, for measuring the longitudinal strain of plane specimens from 0.001 to 0.1 at temperatures up to 800 C.

Acousto-optic Extensometer for Bolts

Bolt torque or tension deduced from non contacting measurements. Pulsed Laser induces shockwave in bolthead while continuous-wave acousto-optic detector monitors distortion produced by shock. Shock travel time measured to determine bolt length. Solid-state position detector relatively inexpensive and keeps down cost of extensometer.

Capacitive Extensometer Particularly Suited for Measuring in Vivo Bone Strain

The present invention provides for in vivo measurements of the principal strain magnitudes and directions, and maximum shear strain that occurs in a material, such as human bone, when it is loaded (or subjected to a load). In one embodiment the invention includes a capacitive delta extensometer arranged with six sensors in a three piece configuration, with each sensor of each pair spaced apart from each other by 120 degrees.
