Novel white light-emitting CdSe:Mn 2+ synthesized by photo-assisted chemical bath deposition

Nowadays, white light-emitting materials have attracted extensive research due to their potential applications in lighting devices and displaying images. Several semiconductor nanoparticles have been explored to achieve efficient white light emission. In this work, we report on novel white light-emitting CdSe:Mn 2+ thin films synthesized by photo-assisted chemical bath deposition. The effect of varying the Mn 2+ ion concentrations on the thin film structure, morphology, and optical properties was investigated. X-ray powder diffraction results indicated that all the films annealed at 250 degrees C possessed a cubic structure, with crystallite sizes in the range of 1-130 nm. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated spherical nanoparticles with no significant changes with varying Mn 2+ doping concentrations. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the presence of the anticipated elements. The atomic force microscope revealed that the surface roughness has decreased with an increase in Mn 2+ ion concentrations but decreased for 0.7 %Mn 2+ . The UV-Vis absorption spectra showed absorption edges around 600-650 nm. Photoluminescence emission spectra excited at 3.8 eV (325 nm) showed emission bands at around 1.75 eV (709 nm), and 1.88 eV (659 nm), which were attributed to the band-to-band emission, and 4 T 1 ( 4 G)-> 6 A 1 ( 6 S) transitions of Mn 2+ ions, respectively, while emission bands at 2.35 eV (528 nm), and prominent at 3.17 eV (391 nm) were due to the glass substrate. The temperature-dependent luminescence showed a decrease in relative emission intensity with the increase in the operating temperature. The chromaticity colour coordinates showed white light-emitting thin films. These present findings open a new door to developing white light using CdSe thin films.

A universal etching method for synthesizing high-performance single crystal cathode materials

LiNi x MnyCo 1-x-y O 2 (NMC) is considered the most appealing cathode material due to its high energy density and low cost. However, the stability and safety concerns, caused by the degradation of polycrystalline cathode materials during cycling, have restricted their practical applications. To overcome this shortcoming, converting polycrystalline cathode to high-performance single-crystal cathode materials becomes an appealing solution. In this work, a universal etching approach is firstly developed to synthesize single-crystal cathode materials. The rate performance of the obtained single-crystal NMC111 is 10–15% more than that of polycrystalline NMC111 whereas the capacity retention of single-crystal NMC111 is enhanced by ~12% after 300 cycles at 0.5C. The obtained single-crystal NMC622 exhibits a pronounced improvement in rate performance, especially at high rates (~28.6% better at 5C and ~129% better at 10C) and has a comparable cycle performance compared to polycrystalline NMC622. Altogether, the findings propose an alternative approach to generate single-crystal particles with high energy density and cycle stability for the next generation lithium-ion batteries.

Optical properties of differing nanolayered structures of divalent europium doped barium fluoride thin films synthesized by pulsed laser deposition

Optically-active thin films are employed in a variety of applications, such as LEDs and photovoltaics, due to their ability to act as up- or down-photon energy converters. Their performance depends critically on their composition and structure; thus, the use of novel synthesis techniques that allow for their control at the nanoscale level can result in improved efficiency and practicality. Here, layered thin films consisting of Eu 2+ - doped BaF 2 nanocrystalline layers separated by amorphous Al 2 O 3 were synthesized via sequential pulsed laser deposition using three separate targets for the different components; this synthesis technique provides precise control of layer thickness at the nanoscale along with dopant distribution within the film. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy analysis verified the desired nano-layering. Post-deposition heat treatments in a nitrogen atmosphere resulted in samples exhibiting steady emission with a broad peak ranging from 400 to 600 nm and a shoulder at 410 nm. The CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates are x = 0.26-0.29 and y = 0.32-0.35 and vary as a function of the sample configuration. Because the chromaticity coordinates are close to those of a pure white light (x = 0.33, y = 0.33), these films demonstrate advantageous properties for applications with UV-pumped white light LEDs.

Synthesis of uranium mixed anion compounds synthesized using the Boron-Chalcogen Mixture method: Ba 6 Co 6 U 0·9 1S 13·5 O 0.5 and Ba 5·47 K 0·53 Zn 6 US 13·5 O 0.5

Mixed anion compounds have exhibited interesting structures and properties that differ from compounds only incorporating a single anion in their composition. Unfortunately, difficulties in the synthetic methods used to obtain these materials has slowed the evolution of this field, prompting investigations into alternate synthetic pathways to these materials. Our recently establish Boron-Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) method, which was originally developed for the synthesis of pure actinide chalcogenides from oxides, has been adapted to achieve the partial oxide to sulfide conversion of Ba 2 MUO 6 (M = Co, Zn) which resulted in two new uranium (IV/V) oxysulfide compounds, Ba 6 Co 6 U 0·91 S 13·5 O 0.5 and Ba 5·47 K 0·53 Zn 6 US 13·5 O 0.5 These compounds crystallize in the tetragonal crystal system adopting the space group I4/mcm. Finally, their syntheses, crystal structures, and trends observed in the pursuit of these new mixed anion compounds are reported.

Verification of stability and unraveling the electronic and physical properties of bulk and (001)-surfaces of newly synthesized Ti 2 ZnX (X = C, N) MAX phases

MAX phase family has been extended by the addition of late transition metals at the A-site with the expectation of diverse functional properties. Here, we present our systematic density functional investigation on the thermodynamic and phonon stabilities, elastic properties, including elastic constants, elastic moduli and elastic anisotropy of newly synthesized Ti 2 ZnX (X = C, N) phases in comparison with conventional Ti 2 AlX (X = C, N). Due to the smaller size of N as compared to C, the unit cell dimension is reduced when C atoms are replaced by N atoms at the X-site. Furthermore, the Ti 2 ZnC and Ti 2 ZnN are stable at the equilibrium volume of 110.84 Å 3 and 105.70 Å 3 . The thermodynamic, mechanical and dynamical stabilities are validated by estimating the formation energies, elastic constants and phonon dispersions, respectively. The elastic properties of Ti 2 ZnN are less anisotropic as compared to those of Ti 2 ZnC. To understand the thin-film characteristics in Ti 2 ZnX, the surface properties with (001)-terminated slabs are investigated. Both Ti 2 ZnX bulk and (001)-surfaces exhibit metal-like electronic structures. There is a strong covalent bonding between Ti-X and Ti-Zn atoms confirmed by the charge density map and Mulliken population analysis. Additional states are generated at the Fermi level (EF) due to the unusual d-p states hybridization between Ti and Zn atoms. The anisotropy in chemical bonding is confirmed by the cleavage energy difference between Ti-X and Ti-Zn. Here, Ti(X)-001 and Zn-001 terminations are stable surfaces; however, in terms of chemical potentials, Zn-001 termination is the most favourable in Ti 2 ZnX.

Evaluation of strategies to narrow the product chain-length distribution of microbially synthesized free fatty acids

The dominant strategy for tailoring the chain-length distribution of free fatty acids (FFA) synthesized by heterologous hosts is expression of a selective acyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) thioesterase. However, few of these enzymes can generate a precise (greater than 90% of a desired chain-length) product distribution when expressed in a microbial or plant host. The presence of alternative chain-lengths can complicate purification in situations where blends of fatty acids are not desired. We report the assessment of several strategies for improving the dodecanoyl-ACP thioesterase from the California bay laurel to exhibit more selective production of medium-chain free fatty acids to near exclusivity. We demonstrated that matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-ToF MS) was an effective library screening technique for identification of thioesterase variants with favorable shifts in Journal Pre-proof chain-length specificity. This strategy proved to be a more effective screening technique than several rational approaches discussed herein. With this data, we isolated four thioesterase variants which exhibited a more selective FFA distribution over wildtype when expressed in the fatty acid accumulating E. coli strain, RL08. We then combined mutations from the MALDI isolates to generate BTE-MMD19, a thioesterase variant capable of producing free fatty acids consisting of 90% of C12 products. Of the four mutations which conferred a specificity shift, we noted that three affected the shape of the binding pocket, while one occurred on the positively charged acyl carrier protein landing pad. Lastly, we fused the maltose binding protein (MBP) from E. coli to the N – terminus of BTE-MMD19 to improve enzyme solubility and achieve a titer of 1.9 g per L of twelve-carbon fatty acids in a shake flask.

Predicting and Synthesizing Interface Stabilized 2D Layers

The compound (Pb 2 MnSe 3 ) 0.6 VSe 2 was predicted to be kinetically stable based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations on an island of Pb 2 MnSe 3 between layers of VSe 2 . This approach provides a high degree of freedom by not forcing interlayer lattice match, making it ideal to investigate the likelihood of formation of new incommensurate layer misfit structures. The free space around the island is critical, as it allows atoms to diffuse and hence exploring the local energy landscape around the initial configuration. (Pb 2 MnSe 3 ) 0.6 VSe 2 was synthesized via a near diffusionless reaction from precursors where a repeating sequence of elemental layers matches the local composition and layer sequence of the predicted compound. The VSe 2 layer consists of a Se–V–Se trilayer with octahedral coordination of the V atoms. The Pb 2 MnSe 3 layer consists of three rock-salt-like planes, with a MnSe layer between the planes of PbSe. The center MnSe plane stabilizes the puckering of the outer PbSe layers. Electrical properties indicate that (Pb 2 Mn 1 Se 3 ) 0.6 VSe 2 undergoes a charge density wave transition at ~100 K and orders ferromagnetically at 35 K. Overall, the combination of theory and experiment enables a faster convergence to new heterostructures than either approach in isolation.

Gas Permeation and Separation Characteristics of Microporous TpHz COF Membranes Synthesized by Substrate-Assisted Interfacial Polymerization

Microporous two-dimensional covalent organic framework (2D COF) membranes offer promise for gas separation applications, but their gas transport mechanism remains unclear. In this study, a TpHz 2D COF membrane supported on a macroporous nylon substrate is prepared by substrate-assisted interfacial polymerization under mild conditions. The formation of a continuous and dense thin (~300 nm thick) TpHz layer is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Characterization by X-ray diffraction, grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, and N 2 porosimetry qualitatively reveals the microstructures of the supported TpHz membranes, i.e., they comprise partially oriented 2D COF lamellar crystallites with moderate crystallinity in an eclipsed (AA) stacking geometry, centering the effective membrane pore size distribution at ~1.1 nm. Further, single gas permeation data show that the transport of common molecular gases, including H 2 , He, CH 4 , N 2 , and CO 2 , through the synthesized TpHz membranes follows the Knudsen transport mechanism, where single gas permeance decreases with an increasing molecular weight and permeation temperature. Binary gas separation results show that in the equimolar CO 2 /N 2 mixture, the presence of the CO 2 surface flow slightly hinders the N 2 flow at room temperature due to the reduced membrane channel size by the adsorbed CO 2 gas layer on TpHz’s pore wall. In contrast, permeation of the equimolar CH 4 /N 2 binary mixture does not exhibit a discernible surface flow of both gases due to their much lower gas uptake on TpHz, and their transport mechanism follows Knudsen-like behavior.

Structures and Magnetic Properties of K 2 Pd 4 U 6 S 17 , K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 Synthesized Using the Boron–Chalcogen Mixture Method

A series of A 2 M 4 U 6 S 17 (A = Alkali metal, M = Pd or Pt) compounds, specifically K 2 Pd 4 U 6 S 17 , K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , were synthesized using the combined Boron-Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) and molten flux crystal growth methods. The formation of the Rb- and Cs- containing analogues resulted from the in-situ alkali polysulfide flux formation formed from the alkali carbonates. The successful synthesis of single crystals of the title compounds allowed for their structural characterization by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure determination revealed disorder of the alkali cations in Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , while the potassium cations in K 2 Pd 4 U 6 S 17 and K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 were fully ordered. Here, magnetic measurements were performed on samples of K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 that contained small amounts of paramagnetic β-US 2 and diamagnetic PtS. Antiferromagnetic order is observed at T N = 9.1 K for K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 . No long-range magnetic order was observed for Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 . Uranium moments of 2.5, 2.6, and 2.6 μB were measured for K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , respectively.

Experimental Investigation of Thermodynamic Stabilization in Boron Imidazolate Frameworks (BIFs) Synthesized by Mechanochemistry

This study experimentally explores the energetics for the formation of boron–imidazolate frameworks (BIFs), which are synthesized by mechanochemistry. The topologically similar frameworks employ the same tetratopic linker based on tetrakis(imidazolyl)boric acid but differ in the monovalent cation metal nodes. This permits assessment of the stabilizing effect of metal nodes in frameworks with sodalite (SOD) and diamondoid (dia) topologies. The enthalpy of formation from endmembers (metal oxide and linker), which define thermodynamic stability of the structures, has been determined by use of acid solution calorimetry. The results show that heavier metal atoms in the node promote greater energetic stabilization of denser structures. Overall, in BIFs the relation between cation descriptors (ionic radius and electronegativity) and thermodynamic stability depends on framework topology. Thermodynamic stability increases with the metallic character of the cation employed as the metal node, independent of the framework topology. In conclusion, the results suggest unifying aspects for thermodynamic stabilization across MOF systems.

Electronic Spin Relaxation and Clustering in High-Pressure High-Temperature Synthesized Microcrystalline Diamond Particles with Reduced Nitrogen Content

The negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV – ) color center in diamonds is widely studied because of numerous applications of this unique quantum system in sensing and quantum information sciences. While substitutional nitrogen is required to form the NV – centers in diamond, it also yields other paramagnetic defects─primarily the neutrally charged substitutional nitrogen centers (P1)─that decrease NV – spin coherence, which in turn degrades performance in applications. Herein, we investigate high-pressure high-temperature synthesized diamond microparticles (ca. 140–185 μm) having lower─ranging from 3 to 38 ppm─than the typical nitrogen content of type 1b diamond ( ca. 100 ppm and higher) typically used for the production of fluorescent diamond particles with NV – centers. A suite of electron paramagnetic resonance, optically detected magnetic resonance, and nuclear magnetic resonance methods are used to characterize spin properties of P1 and NV – centers in the particles. Upon decreasing the nitrogen content from 29 to 3 ppm, the ensemble NV – T 2 relaxation time increased by about 3-fold as measured directly in the Hahn Echo experiment at magnetic field of 1.2 T. Analysis of electronic relaxation of P1 centers revealed the existence of at least two distinct populations of P1 centers, consisting of fast and slower relaxing spins and allowed for an estimation of local concentrations. Even with <10 ppm nitrogen contents, the analysis indicated a highly heterogeneous distribution of P1 centers, suggesting the possibility of P1 spin clustering even at low nitrogen concentrations. The combined data demonstrate that the particles prepared from HPHT diamond with a low nitrogen content offer improved spin properties that are beneficial for NV – sensing applications.

Domain-Dependent Electronic Properties of 2D Copper Boride Synthesized from Reversible Subsurface Diffusion on Cu(111)

Emerging boron-based 2D materials hold properties with potential applications ranging from electronic devices to catalysis and energy storage. Using physical vapor deposition, 2D copper borides are formed on Cu(111) at elevated temperatures. However, the as-prepared surfaces often contain boron clusters that compromise structural homogeneity, and the dynamics of their formation is not yet fully understood. Through in situ low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), we show that cluster-free 2D CuB x is synthesized via reversible subsurface diffusion of boron atoms. The resolved regular atomic structure aligns with the previously calculated Cu 8 B 14 model. In a rare case, possibly due to surface strain and a change of orientation, a second domain of CuB x was observed with a pronounced change in electronic properties, yet electronic states remain delocalized in both domains. In conclusion, these findings demonstrate the sensitivity of electronic properties to domain structure and highlight a potential opportunity to tune 2D CuB x for diverse applications.

Percolated Ionic Aggregate Morphologies and Decoupled Ion Transport in Precise Sulfonated Polymers Synthesized by Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Here, we describe a set of precise single-ion conducting polymers that form self-assembled percolated ionic aggregates in glassy polymer matrices and have decoupled transport of metal cations. These precise single-ion conductors (SICs), synthesized by a scalable ring-opening metathesis polymerization, consist of a polyethylene backbone with a sulfonated phenyl group pendant on every fifth carbon and are fully neutralized by a counterion X + (Li + , Na + , or Cs + ). Experimental X-ray scattering measurements and fully atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are in good agreement. The MD simulations show that the ionic groups nanophase separate from the polymer backbone to form percolating ionic aggregates. Using graph theory, we find that within the Li + - and Na + -neutralized polymers the percolated aggregates exhibit planar and ribbon-like configurations at intermediate length scales, while the percolated aggregates within the Cs + -neutralized polymers are more isotropic. Electrical impedance spectroscopy measurements show that the ionic conductivities exhibit Arrhenius behavior, with conductivities of 10 –7 to 10 –6 S/cm at 180 °C. In the MD simulations, the cations move between sulfonate groups in the percolated aggregates, larger ions travel further, and overall cations travel further than the polymer backbones, indicating a decoupled ion-transport mechanism. Thus, the percolated ionic aggregates in these polymers can serve as pathways to facilitate decoupled ion motion through a glassy polymer matrix.

Uniform high-k amorphous native oxide synthesized by oxygen plasma for top-gated transistors

The integration of high-k gate dielectrics with two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting channel materials is essential for high-performance and low-power electronics. However, the conformal deposition of a uniform high-k dielectric with sub-1-nm equivalent oxide thickness (EOT) and high interface quality on high-mobility 2D semiconductors is still challenging. Here we report a facile approach to synthesize a uniform high-k (ε r ~ 22) amorphous native oxide Bi 2 SeO x on the 2D semiconducting Bi2O2Se using O 2 plasma at room temperature. The conformal native oxide can directly serve as gate dielectrics with EOT of ~0.9 nm, while the original properties of underlying 2D Bi 2 O 2 Se is preserved. Furthermore, high-resolution area-selective oxidation of Bi 2 O 2 Se is achieved to fabricate discrete electronic components. This facile integration of a 2D semiconductor and its high-k native oxide holds high promise for next-generation nanoelectronics.

Magnetic La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 Membranes Synthesized by Etching a Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 Sacrificial Layer Using an Intermediary Manganite Protection Layer

The integration of perovskite oxides onto flexible substrates has witnessed significant advancements owing to the development of an epitaxial lift-off technique utilizing a Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 sacrificial layer. However, Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 is susceptible to instability in both air and high-temperature oxygen atmospheres, potentially leading to degradation during the growth of the functional oxide layer. In this study, we investigate the use of an oxygen-deficient La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 as capping layer, and demonstrate its ability to stabilize Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 films in ambient air. We successfully synthesized freestanding La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 membranes by etching this sacrificial layer and transferring them onto flexible polymer substrates. Importantly, the magnetic properties of the La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 films are preserved in these membranes. Furthermore, our results underline that employing a thin manganite capping layer ensures both high structural quality and the preservation of functional properties in the resulting membranes.

Catalysis of the Oxygen-Evolution Reaction in 1.0 M Sulfuric Acid by Manganese Antimonate Films Synthesized via Chemical Vapor Deposition

Manganese antimonate (Mn y Sb 1–y O x ) electrocatalysts for the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) were synthesized via chemical vapor deposition. Mn-rich rutile Mn 0.63 Sb 0.37 O x catalysts on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) supports drove the OER for 168 h (7 days) at 10 mA cm –2 with a time-averaged overpotential of 687 ± 9 mV and with >97% Faradaic efficiency. Time-dependent anolyte composition analysis revealed the steady dissolution of Mn and Sb. Extended durability analysis confirmed that Mn-rich Mn y Sb 1–y O x materials are more active but dissolve at a faster rate than previously reported Sb-rich Mn y Sb 1–y O x alloys.

In Situ Analysis of Electron-Induced Chemical Transformations in Vapor-Phase-Synthesized Al-Based Inorganic–Organic Hybrid Thin Films for EUV Resist Platform

The rapid advancement and stringent requirements of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology necessitate the development of advanced photoresist systems for next-generation microelectronics. Recent studies have demonstrated that inorganic-based hybrid photoresists offer notable improvements in EUV sensitivity, etch resistance, and greater insusceptibility to pattern collapse compared to their purely organic counterparts. However, variations in the synthesis/coating approaches and chemistry of inorganic–organic photoresists can result in distinct exposure mechanisms. In this work, an Al-based hybrid thin film resist system synthesized via molecular (atomic) layer deposition (MLD or MALD) is explored, focusing on its electron-beam and EUV patterning mechanisms. The Al-based hybrid thin films are deposited using trimethylaluminum (TMA) and the organic precursor hydroquinone, exhibiting a saturated growth rate within the temperature range of 150–200°C. In diluted tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH)-based developer solutions, the electron-irradiated Al-based hybrid thin film system behaves as a negative tone resist, achieving a sensitivity of 10.4 mC/cm 2 at 0.1 kV electron beam lithography (EBL). Chemical changes induced by electron exposure are also analyzed in this study using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and a unique infrared spectroscopy setup, revealing the potential cross-linking pathways. To further correlate the electron-induced chemical transformations with those mediated by EUV irradiations, a combination of X-ray photoemission electron microscopy/low-energy electron microscopy (XPEEM/LEEM) system is also employed. In conclusion, this study provides critical insights into the mechanisms underlying solubility switching and contributes to the design of advanced resist materials for EUV lithography.

Design of Zn Chalcogenide Shells for Emissive Ga-Rich In 1– X Ga X As Quantum Dots Synthesized in Molten Salts

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have seen expanded applications in optoelectronics from visible to near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. However, the options for QDs with bright and size-tunable emission in the NIR region are mostly limited to heavy-metal-based (Pb, Cd, Hg) semiconductors. Here, Ga-rich In 1–X Ga X As QDs with zinc chalcogenide shells are demonstrated as candidates for NIR emitters. Based on new developments in inorganic molten salt chemistry, we synthesized colloidal In 1–X Ga X As QDs containing up to 85% gallium with high crystallinity based on Raman and XRD analyses. Zinc selenide and sulfide shells with different morphologies were grown on In 1–X Ga X As QDs by controlling the Zn precursor chemistry. Despite the nominally reduced lattice mismatch in the In 1–X Ga X As/ZnSe heterostructure, a ZnS shell was found to be a much more effective passivation material: In 1–X Ga X As/ZnS core–shell QDs show a photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) of about 30% versus 11% for ZnSe shells. In conclusion, based on the analysis of PL decay and transient absorption (TA) dynamics, we surmise that electron trapping is the major reason for efficiency loss, providing a clear heterostructure design principle for realizing efficient NIR-emitting In 1–X Ga X As QDs.
