Adsorption of hydroxamic acid ligands for improved extraction of rare earth elements from monazite ores

Efficient separation of rare earth element (REE) ores via froth flotation requires the development of novel ligands with enhanced adsorption capacity and selectivity. To realize these advances, understanding the mechanisms underlying interactions between the ligand and mineral surfaces is essential. This study systematically evaluates the adsorption behavior of alkyl- and aromatic alkyl-substituted hydroxamic acid ligands on monazite surfaces using complementary spectroscopic techniques, including UV–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy, together with the ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. Among the studied ligands, octanohydroxamic acid (OHA) and 4-ethoxy-N,2-dihydroxybenzamide (EDHBA) exhibit high adsorption capacity under basic pH (8–10) by forming multilayers on the surface. OHA has a higher equilibrium adsorption capacity compared to EDHBA, but it forms a less stable multilayer susceptible to disruption in the presence of interfering ions. AIMD results show that OHA adopts a single stable chelating geometry, while EDHBA exhibits multiple binding modes involving distinct interactions with La surface atoms and phosphate-bound oxygens, resulting in more complex adsorption kinetics. The variations in surface binding and intermolecular interactions observed between alkyl and aromatic molecules influence the differences in adsorption kinetics, equilibrium adsorption capacities on the mineral surface, and their flotation performance. This work provides valuable insight into the adsorption mechanism of ligands at mineral interfaces, which is crucial for guiding the design of new ligands with enhanced separation performance.

In Situ Tracking of Nonthermal Plasma Etching of ZIF-8 Films

Surface characterization is critical for understanding the processes used for preparing catalysts, sorbents, and membranes. Nonthermal plasma (NTP) is a process that achieves high reactivity at low temperatures and is used to tailor the surface properties of materials. In this work, we combine the capabilities of infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) with NTP for the in situ interrogation of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) thin films to probe modifications in the material induced by oxygen and nitrogen plasmas. The IRRAS measurements in oxygen plasma reveal etching of organic ligands with sequential removal of the methyl group and imidazole ring and with the formation of carbonyl moieties (C═O). In contrast, nitrogen plasma induces mild etching and grafting of nitrile groups (−C≡N). Scanning electron microscopy imaging shows that oxygen plasma, at prolonged times, significantly degrades the ZIF-8 film at the grain boundaries. Treatment of ZIF-8 membranes using mild plasma conditions yields a fivefold enhancement for H 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 ideal selectivities and an eightfold enhancement for CO 2 /N 2 ideal selectivity. Additionally, the new tools described here can be used for spectroscopic in situ tracking of plasma-induced chemistry on thin films in general.

Nonlocal Effect of Percolated Particle Networks on Viscoelasticity of Polymer–Filler Nanocomposites: A Mesoscale Simulation Study

With nanoparticles (NPs) as fillers, polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) usually exhibit enhanced mechanical properties. However, a direct connection between the microscopic structural relaxation and macroscopic mechanical properties of PNCs remains to be established. To investigate the micro-to-macro connection, we develop a mesoscale model, in which the NPbridging polymer chains are represented by a dynamic bonded interaction between NPs, and the bulk polymer matrix is implicitly modeled by overdamped Langevin dynamics. Extensive equilibrium simulations are performed to quantify the microscopic dynamics of model PNCs. Systematic analyses of modified Rouse dynamics, dynamic structure factor, and relaxation modulus uncover that the microscopic relaxation dynamics of PNCs are significantly decelerated across different length scales because of nonlocal effects of percolated particle networks a phenomenon that has not been adequately captured in prior simulation studies. We find that NPvolume- fraction and NP-bonding-energy barrier are the two critical variables that affect bulk viscoelasticity the most. The proposed mesoscale model is versatile and provides a powerful framework for studying structure−property relations of different PNCs.

Two-mode bosonic quoctit for high energy physics

In this work, we study a two-mode bosonic encoding of a quoctit inside a non-Abelian group-structured constellation of coherent states. This work is motivated by the importance of non-Abelian symmetry in particle physics and the desire to have transversal non-Abelian logical gates. We use the previously developed 2 T constellation of states used to encode a so-called 2 T qutrit. The fidelity of the 2 T quoctit is benchmarked against other bosonic qudits for different noise models and find it compare favorably when power constraints are considered. This paves the way for the construction of higher-dimensional qudits (e.g., a quicosotetrit with 2 T group structure) in bosonic systems with practical applications in quantum simulations of particle physics.

Laboratory Development of a Pot Calcination Process for Converting Liquid Wastes to Solids

Simulated Darex, Purex, Thorex, and TBP-25 wastes were batch-evaporated and calcined to solids. The weight of residue was decreased to ~ 8% of the original waste for Darex, to ~ 4% for Purex, to ~ 2% for Thorex, and ~ 7% for TBP-25 by calcination to 1200°C. Semicontinuous evaporation and calcination to solids at 900°C of Darex and Purex wastes gave volume reduction factors of ~ 8 and 7 to 10, respectively. The nitrate contents of the residues from batch calcination to 800°C were from ~ 0.07 to 0.5 wt % while the nitrate contents of the residues from semicontinuous calcination to 900°C were from ~ 0.1 to 0.7 wt %. Sodium, calcium, and magnesium additives to Purex waste decreased the percent of sulfate volatilized into the condensate from ~ 30% to <0.5%. Replacement of the atmosphere above the waste with nitric oxide decreased ruthenium volatility from 50 to 60% of that originally present in Purex waste to 0.5 to 3.5%. The thermal conductivities for the calcined wastes, measured in situ, were all >0.1 Btu/hr ft °F at ~ 400°F and increased almost linearly with increasing temperature to >0.3 Btu/hr ft °F at ~ 1600°F in all cases studied.

Modeling phase transformations in Mn-rich disordered rocksalt cathodes with machine-learning interatomic potentials

Mn-rich disordered rocksalt (DRX) cathode materials exhibit a phase transformation from a disordered to a partially disordered spinel-like structure (δ-phase) during electrochemical cycling. Here, in this computational study, we use charge-informed molecular dynamics with a fine-tuned CHGNet foundation potential to investigate the phase transformation in LixMn 0.8 Ti 0.1 O 1.9 F 0.1 . Our results indicate that transition metal migration occurs and reorders to form the spinel-like ordering in an FCC anion framework. The transformed structure contains a higher concentration of nontransition metal (0-TM) face-sharing channels, which are known to improve Li transport kinetics. Analysis of the Mn valence distribution suggests that the appearance of tetrahedral Mn 2+ is a consequence of spinel-like ordering, rather than the trigger for cation migration as previously suggested. Calculated equilibrium intercalation voltage profiles demonstrate that the δ-phase, unlike the ordered spinel, exhibits solid-solution signatures at low voltage. A higher Li capacity is obtained than in the DRX phase. This study provides atomic insights into solid-state phase transformation and its relation to experimental electrochemistry, highlighting the potential of machine-learning interatomic potentials for understanding complex oxide materials.

Composite Lithium Metal Structure to Mitigate Pulverization and Enable Long‐Life Batteries

In lithium metal batteries, non‐uniform stripping of lithium results in pit formation, which promotes subsequent non‐uniform, dendritic deposition. This viscous cycle leads to pulverization of lithium which promotes cell shorting or capacity degradation, symptoms further exaggerated by high electrode areal loading and lean electrolytes. Here, to address this challenge, a composite lithium metal anode is engineered that contains uniformly distributed, nanometer‐sized carbon particles. This composite lithium is shown to strip more uniformly since the growth of non‐uniform pits is intercepted by the carbon particles. This mechanism is corroborated by a continuum electrochemical model. Subsequent lithium deposition on carbon particles is also found to be more uniform than on the surface with irregular pits. Notably, the pulverization rate of composite lithium is 26 times slower than that of commercial lithium. Moreover, in a Li‐S battery with sulfurized polyacrylonitrile cathode, the use of the composite anode extends the cycle life by three times when the areal capacity is 8 mAh cm −2 . The approach of using an engineered lithium composite structure to address challenges during both stripping and plating can inform future designs of lithium metal anodes for high areal capacity operations.

Revealing Hidden Quinones Through Diagnostic MS² Fragmentation of Peptide–Quinone Adducts

Quinones are redox-active components of natural organic matter that mediate electron transfer and influence biogeochemical processes, but many quinones in pyrogenic organic matter (PyOM) remain unresolved because they ionize poorly by mass spectrometry. Here, we present a peptide-tagging approach to improve detection of cysteine-reactive electrophiles in PyOM, with quinones expected to be a dominant subset based on reaction chemistry and selectivity experiments. A cysteine-containing peptide was used to form Michael-addition adducts, enhancing electrospray ionization and enabling untargeted screening by high-performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry. The method was benchmarked with five quinone standards and applied to extracts from charred plant material as a discovery-level screen for cysteine-reactive targets. We identified 98 quinone-candidate adducts (mean neutral mass ~603 Da), of which more than 70% were not detectable in native MS1 data. Among formula-assigned features, hidden quinone candidates had median (O+N)/C of 0.391 and normalized oxidation state of carbon of -0.281, consistent with relatively low polarity and low oxidation state. These results reveal a previously inaccessible pool of hidden redox-active compounds in PyOM and provide a framework for prioritizing quinone-like electrophiles for confirmation and incorporation into models of fire-driven biogeochemical cycling.

Nasa’S Development of Merino - A New Family of Advanced, Low-Cost, Non-Woven Ablative Tps Materials

The Mars Exploration Program (MEP) and NASAs Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) are investing in approaches to reduce the cost and increase the frequency of future Mars missions while also seeking to help emerging commercial space companies which have an immediate need to demonstrate their capability to return samples from space - at a fraction of the cost of a conventional NASA mission. Of particular interest and relevance to commercial space and low-cost Mars, is the work developing and advancing MERINO-LD, an ablative carbon/phenolic blanket that is ~75% faster to produce with an estimated ~75% reduction in cost when compared to rigid PICA or Conformal-PICA TPS.
