Fabrication of engineered dopant profiles in Er/Lu:YAG transparent laser ceramics via additive manufacturing

Transparent ceramic Er:YAG laser rods were fabricated via the direct ink write (DIW) method with engineered doping profiles featuring an Er-doped core with endcaps and core-clad structures. Laser rods up to 11 cm in length were produced which required development of a scalable process. To achieve this, multiple improvements were implemented, including printing the rods horizontally on a substrate, rather than vertically, eliminating the need for an external support structure and using a sacrificial drying layer to mitigate warping and defects. Highly transparent rods were achieved with optical scatter levels as low as 0.5%/cm (at 543 nm). A small refractive index difference of 5.7 ppm was measured at the interface between the Er-doped core and the Lu-doped endcaps and cladding. These results demonstrate DIW as a straightforward method for making good optical quality laser rods with engineered doping profiles to improve laser performance.

BISON Capability to Account for Dopant Sensitivity in Relevant UO 2 Material Models

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation program aims to develop predictive capabilities using computational methods for the analysis and design of advanced reactor and fuel cycle systems. This program has been supporting the development of BISON, a high-fidelity and high-resolution fuel performance tool at the engineering scale. Incorporation of more physics-based models in BISON for the accident tolerant fuel applications motivated this study. This document details integration of new modeling capabilities in BISON, including: a tensile strength model for uranium dioxide (UO 2 ) fuel to incorporate the microstructural effects (e.g., grain size, fabrication pore size, and porosity), and atomistic-informed creep model for UO 2 fuel that is developed by Los Alamos National Laboratory. Sensitivity analyses are conducted on these models separately as well as a two-dimensional full rod application under normal operating conditions. Lastly, these new modeling capabilities in BISON are exercised in Halden IFA-677.1 and IFA-716.1 assessment cases.

How much is surface dopant enough to maximize CO2-to-liquid chemicals conversion at industrially relevant current density?

This invited talk will be presented at the symposium "Waste Feedstock to Fuels and Petrochemicals”, Fuels and Petrochemical Division at the 2024 AIChE Annual Meeting. In this study, we will discuss how minute amount of surface heteroatoms would maximize CO2 reduction to formate/formic acid at industrially relevant current densities and high selectivity which was validated by both experimental and computational studies. The outstanding performance of the best-in-class catalysts in both H-cell and full-cell electrolyzer cell is also demonstrated. Our findings would provide additional design concepts of high performance CO2R electrocatalysts.

Promoting the Selectivity of Pt/m-ZrO 2 Ethanol Steam Reforming Catalysts with K and Rb Dopants

The ethanol steam reforming reaction (ESR) was investigated on unpromoted and potassium- and rubidium-promoted monoclinic zirconia-supported platinum (Pt/m-ZrO 2 ) catalysts. Evidence from in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) characterization indicates that ethanol dissociates to ethoxy species, which undergo oxidative dehydrogenation to acetate followed by acetate decomposition. The acetate decomposition pathway depends on catalyst composition. The decarboxylation pathway tends to produce higher overall hydrogen selectivity and is the most favored route at high alkali loading (2.55 wt.% K and higher or 4.25 wt.% Rb and higher). On the other hand, decarbonylation is a significant route for the undoped catalyst or when a low alkali loading (e.g., 0.85% K or 0.93% Rb) is used, thus lowering the overall H 2 selectivity of the process. Results of in situ DRIFTS and the temperature-programmed reaction of ESR show that alkali doping promotes forward acetate decomposition while exposed metallic sites tend to facilitate decarbonylation. In previous work, 1.8 wt.% Na was found to hinder decarbonylation completely. Due to the fact that 1.8 wt.% Na is atomically equivalent to 3.1 wt.% K and 6.7 wt.% Rb, the results show that less K (2.55% K) or Rb (4.25% Rb) is needed to suppress decarbonylation; that is, more basic cations are more efficient promoters for improving the overall hydrogen selectivity of the ESR process.

Effects of Plasma Etching on Dopant Compensation between p- and n-Type Poly-Si Fingers in Passivated Interdigitated Back Contact Solar Cells

Efficiencies surpassing 26% have been achieved for single-junction Si solar cells based on the interdigitated back contact (IBC) architecture. However, the possibility of lateral shunting between the doped fingers has limited industrial adoption thus far. To avoid this possibility of shunt, complicated patterning techniques of the doped rear fingers have been developed, but spreading can still occur through multiple pathways during cell processing. Patterning can be simplified by using masked plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), but spreading during deposition will also lead to contamination of the isolation region between doped fingers. We significantly reduce the effect of this spreading through a short, gentle plasma etching step, which enables a trap-assisted compensation mechanism to take effect more easily than without the plasma etch. These two effects combined allow for the use of a simple patterning technique while still maintaining a highly resistive region between the doped fingers, and will reduce the complexity of IBC cell fabrication overall.
