The meteorological measurement system on the NASA ER-2 aircraft

A Meteorological Measurement System (MMS) was designed for the high-altitude ER-2 aircraft (NASA 706). Through dedicated instrumentation installed on the aircraft and repeated calibrations, the MMS provides accurate in situ measurements of free-stream pressure, temperature, and the wind vector. The MMS has participated in two major high-altitude scientific expeditions, the Stratosphere-Troposphere Exchange Project (STEP) based in northern Australia and the Airborne Antarctic Ozone Experiment (AAOE) based in southern Chile. Key MMS subsystems are described. The MMS consists of a dedicated inertial navigation system (INS), a randome differential pressure system, a data acquisition system, and air data instrumentation. The MMS incorporates a high-resolution INS (Litton LIN-72RH model), which is specially configured and is updated at 25 Hz. The differential pressure system, consisting of two sets of pressure ports and transducers, is installed in the ER-2 radome to provide sensitive measurements of the airflow angles (angle of attack and angle of sideslip). The data acquisition system was designed to meet aircraft requirements of compactness and light weight (2 cu ft 50 lb) and for MMS requirements to sample, control, process, and store 45 parameters (some redundant) at a sampling rate up to 10 Hz. The MMS data are stored both in a tape recorder (20 MB) and a hermatically-sealed winchester hard disc (10 MB). Special and redundant instrumentation for temperature and pressure measurements were also installed on the aircraft.

Effects of long term space environment exposure on optical substrates and coatings (S0050-2)

The experiment consisted of Fused Silica and Ultra Low Expansion (ULE(tm)) glass samples which were either uncoated or had high reflectance silver, antireflectance, or solar rejection coatings. A set of duplicate control samples was manufactured and stored in a controlled environment for comparison purposes. We will present spectral curves for the glass and coatings which define preflight, postflight, and post-cleaning performance. Data on the analysis of the contaminate deposited on the samples and stress measurements in the glass will also be presented. Some results of particular interest are that the contaminate composition varied between different types of samples, and no darkening of the ULE(tm) glass occurred due to the radiation exposure.

MULTI-OMICS STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF REDOX-ACTIVE METALLOPORPHYRIN ON MURINE RETINA DURING SPACEFLIGHT

Astronauts returning from spaceflight have experienced eye problems, which may decrease retinal performance and lead to long-term effects on visual acuity. This study leverages the collected data from spaceflown murine retinas that were treated with redox-active metalloporphyrin (BuOE) to mitigate spaceflight-induced changes and respective ground controls. 10-week-old adult C57BL/6 male mice (n=5 in each of BuOE treated and saline control groups for spaceflown and ground control samples) were flown on Space-X 24 to the ISS national lab, kept in low earth orbit for 35 days and returned to Earth alive. Our multi-omics analysis of RNA-sequencing and reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS) data generated from subsequent murine retina tissues uncovered genes, pathways, and epigenetic modifications consistent with therapeutic potential of BuOE. From RNA-Seq analysis of spaceflown murine samples, the treatment group show differentially expressed genes relative to saline controls that reached significance (adjusted p-value < 0.05) and included genes Gpx3 and Crhbp, which are related to protection against cell oxidative damage and cellular response to organonitrogen compounds. Ranked fold-changes from the same contrast were used for gene set enrichment analysis, which showed biological processes reaching significance (adjusted p-value < 0.05) including glutathione metabolic processes and cellular response to xenobiotic stimulus. RRBS data of the spaceflown murine samples found 139 hyper or hypo differentially methylated sites spread across chromosomes 1-19 (20% promoters, 21% exons, 43% introns | 20 CpG islands, 7 CpG shores) with a 10% methylation difference (q-value < 0.05).The findings from this investigation have the potential to provide valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying conditions like spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome and assess the effectiveness of BuOE as a countermeasure for astronauts experiencing neuro-ophthalmic abnormalities, which can lead to long-term effects on visual acuity.

Amplicon Sequencing Assessment to Measure Microbial Community Response from Heavy Metal Contaminated Soils in Savannah River site, Tims Branch watershed

Long-term presence of heavy metal contamination in soils is correlated with changes in microbial community structures and can lead to the reduction of indigenous species. Tolerance to soil heavy metal toxicity varies among different microbial communities. It remains unclear whether long term effects caused by metal perturbations are associated with soil microbial community dysregulation in Tims Branch watershed. Research Questions: Does heavy metal contamination in Tims Branch soils decrease microbial species diversity significantly compared to non-contaminated soils? Does the species richness decrease in contaminated samples? between samples? Is diversity in low, mid and high contamination soils significantly different compared to control samples? Hypothesis: The relative abundance and diversity of species are significantly altered in soils which are contaminated with heavy metals in the Tims Branch watershed. Objectives: Use amplicon sequencing technology along with bioinformatics to compare bacterial communities between four sites in Tims Branch watershed. Evaluate the percent relative abundance and diversity across the site. Conclusions: All bacterial communities exposed to different heavy metal concentrations were dominated by four major groups (Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi and Verrucomicrobia). The dominant phyla Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria and Chloroflexi accounted for 61 % of the relative abundance. Soil bacterial α-diversity, expressed as observed species richness metric and Shannon's diversity index, was the highest in sample location four (high contamination). The lowest observed was at the control location. Species richness increased when concentrations of heavy metals were localized, inferring that the metals can alter microbial community structure. PERMANOVA analysis between contaminated groups tested significant using the Adonis (F (4,29) =1.9712; p < 0.001). There is a 20 percent variation explained between groups (R2 = 0.214). This analysis proves to be beneficial in detecting microbial communities altered by contaminated soils. Moreover, certain concentrations of heavy metals can alter microbial community structures.

Radio AGN in nearby dwarf galaxies: the important role of AGN in dwarf galaxy evolution

ABSTRACT We combine deep optical and radio data, from the Hyper Suprime-Cam and the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR), respectively, to study 78 radio active galactic nuclei (AGN) in nearby (z < 0.5) dwarf galaxies. Comparison to a control sample, matched in stellar mass and redshift, indicates that the AGN and controls reside in similar environments, show similar star formation rates (which trace gas availability) and exhibit a comparable incidence of tidal features (which indicate recent interactions). We explore the AGN properties by combining the predicted gas conditions in dwarfs from a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation with a Monte Carlo suite of simulated radio sources, based on a semi-analytical model for radio-galaxy evolution. In the subset of LOFAR-detectable simulated sources, which have a similar distribution of radio luminosities as our observed AGN, the median jet powers, ages, and accretion rates are ∼1035 W, ∼5 Myr, and ∼10−3.4 M⊙ yr−1, respectively. The median mechanical energy output of these sources is ∼100 times larger than the median binding energy expected in dwarf gas reservoirs, making AGN feedback plausible. Since special circumstances (in terms of environment, gas availability, and interactions) are not necessary for the presence of AGN, and the central gas masses are predicted to be an order of magnitude larger than that required to fuel the AGN, AGN triggering in dwarfs is likely to be stochastic and a common phenomenon. Together with the plausibility of energetic feedback, this suggests that AGN could be important drivers of dwarf galaxy evolution, as is the case in massive galaxies.
