Search for water in Comet P/Halley at 380 GHz

A search for the 4(14)-3(21) orthorotational transition of H2O near 380 GHz was conducted in the coma of Comet P/Halley on May 6, 1986 using a heterodyne receiver and a high resolution spectrometer on the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO). A measured upper limit flux density in a 2 MHz bandwidh was obtained. Model calculations, including both collisions and infrared vibrational excitation by the solar radiation flux, show that this upper limit corresponds to an upper limit on the water production rate of 1.5 x 10 to the 30th water molecules per second for an isothermal coma at 200 K and 1.5 x 10 to the 31st/s for a more realistic model of the coma.

Observations of H2(O-18) at 547 GHz with the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

The 1(10)-1(01) transition of H2(O-18) has been searched for in several sources without positive detection. However, in NGC 2264 and NGC 7538, possible emission features are suspected. Implications of these feataures, if confirmed, are discussed. The best upper limit obtained in Orion (0.9 K) indicates that in that cloud, the water abundance should not be more than 1 percent that of CO.

The HITRAN database - 1986 edition

A description and summary of the latest edition of the AFGL high-resolution transmission molecular absorption database (HITRAN) parameters are presented. This new database combines the information for the seven principal atmospheric absorbers and twenty-one additional molecular species previously contained on the AFGL atmospheric absorption line parameter compilation and on the trace gas compilation. In addition to updating the parameters on earlier editions of the compilation, new parameters have been added to this edition such as the self-broadened half-width, the temperature dependence of the air-broadened half-width, and the transition probability. The database contains 348,043 entries between 0 and 17,900/cm. A FORTRAN program is now furnished to allow rapid access to the molecular transitions and for the creation of customized output. A separate file of molecular cross sections of 11 heavy molecular species, applicable for qualitative simulation of transmission and emission in the atmosphere, has also been provided.

Generating Tunable Far-Infrared Laser Sidebands

New tunable source extends infrared spectroscopy into far infrared wavelengths. Frequency-Tunable far-infrared radiation produced by mixing of fixed-frequency far-infrared laser beam with output of frequency-tunable klystron. By sweeping klystron frequency in synchronism with video display of detector output, one obtains direct presentation of absorption-cell spectrum. Immediate applications are local oscillator for heterodyne systems and tunable source for spectroscopy.

Submillimeter, millimeter, and microwave spectral line catalog

This report describes a computer accessible catalogue of submillimeter, millimeter, and microwave spectral lines in the frequency range between 0 and 10000 GHz (i.e., wavelengths longer than 30 micrometers). The catalogue can be used as a planning guide or as an aid in the identification and analysis of observed spectral lines. The information listed for each spectral line includes the frequency and its estimated error, the intensity, lower state energy, and quantum number assignment. The catalogue has been constructed using theoretical least squares fits of published spectral lines to accepted molecular models. The associated predictions and their estimated errors are based upon the resultant fitted parameters and their covariances. Future versions of this catalogue will add more atoms and molecules and update the present listings (151 species) as new data appear. The catalogue is available from the authors as a magnetic tape recorded in card images and as a set of microfiche records.

Dual-Mode Horn Antenna for Millimeter Wavelengths

Millimeter-wave feed horn exhibits nearly equal beam-intensity patterns in E- and H-planes as well as low side-lobe levels. Horn includes circular waveguide step transition, and conical section. Design simplified version of Potter feed-horn design. New feed horn easier to construct, in part because of simpler shape. Reduction in phase change between step transition and aperture increases bandwidth, thereby reducing precision required to manufacture phase-sensitive dimensions of horn.

Microwave limb sounder for stratospheric measurements

The balloon-borne Microwave Limb Sounder (BMLS) measures atmospheric thermal emission from millimeter wavelength spectral lines to determine vertical profiles of stratospheric species. The instrument flown to data operates at 205 BHz to measure ClO, O3, and H2O2. A 63 GHz radiometer is added to test the technique for determining tangent point pressure from the MLS experiment on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). Many additional species is also measured by the BLMS. A radiometer at 270 GHz would provide measurements of HO2, NO2, HNO3, N2O, 16O18O16O, and HCN. With this addition the BMLS can test the current theory of O3 heavy ozone photochemical balance in the upper stratosphere.

Direct measurement of the fundamental rotational transitions of the OH radical by laser sideband spectroscopy

The direct (zero-field) spectra of the fundamental rotational transitions of the OH radical in its Omega = 3/2 and 1/2 states at 2509.9 and 1834.7 GHz are obtained using a recently developed far-infrared laser sideband spectrometer. These measurements have verified and refined the predictions of previous laser magnetic resonance work, thereby confirming the far-infrared detection of interstellar OH. The increased accuracy of these direct measurements will be useful to future astronomical and atmospheric studies of these important transitions.

Generation of tunable laser sidebands in the far-infrared region

In recent years, several techniques have been developed for the generation of tunable coherent radiation at submillimeter and far-infrared (FIR) wavelengths. The harmonic generation of conventional microwave sources has made it possible to produce spectrometers capable of continuous operation to above 1000 GHz. However, the sensitivity of such instruments drops rapidly with frequency. For this reason, a great deal of attention is given to laser-based methods, which could cover the entire FIR region. Tunable FIR radiation (approximately 100 nW) has been produced by mixing FIR molecular lasers and conventional microwave sources in both open and closed mixer mounts. The present investigation is concerned with improvements in this approach. These improvements provide approximately thirty times more output power than previous results.

Spectroscopic database

Several aspects of quantitative atmospheric spectroscopy are considered, using a classification of the molecules according to the gas amounts in the stratosphere and upper troposphere, and reviews of quantitative atmospheric high-resolution spectroscopic measurements and field measurements systems are given. Laboratory spectroscopy and spectral analysis and prediction are presented with a summary of current laboratory spectroscopy capabilities. Spectroscopic data requirements for accurate derivation of atmospheric composition are discussed, where examples are given for space-based remote sensing experiments of the atmosphere: the ATMOS (Atmospheric Trace Molecule) and UARS (Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite) experiment. A review of the basic parameters involved in the data compilations; a summary of information on line parameter compilations already in existence; and a summary of current laboratory spectroscopy studies are used to assess the data base.

Performance of metal meshes as a function of incidence angle

Inductive mesh transmission has been measured for the two major polarizations as a function of incidence angle. The experimental data agree well with Chen's (1970) waveguide theory in the thin mesh limit. As an aid in making more rapid predictions of mesh properties, Chen's theory is used to derive an empirical lumped circuit model. This model matches the theory and experiment to one percent over critical areas of transmission.
