Submillimeter, millimeter, and microwave spectral line catalogue

This report describes a computer accessible catalogue of submillimeter, millimeter, and microwave spectral lines in the frequency range between 0 and 10000 GHz (i.e., wavelengths longer than 30 micrometers). The catalogue can be used as a planning guide or as an aid in the identification and analysis of observed spectral lines. The information listed for each spectral line includes the frequency and its estimated error, the intensity, lower state energy, and quantum number assignment. The catalogue has been constructed using theoretical least squares fits of published spectral lines to accepted molecular models. The associated predictions and their estimated errors are based upon the resultant fitted parameters and their covariances. Future versions of this catalogue will add more atoms and molecules and update the present listings (151 species) as new data appear. The catalogue is available from the authors as a magnetic tape recorded in card images and as a set of microfiche records.

Directional Coupler With Increased Directivity

Diffraction loss reduced by curving one reflector. In improved diplexer, adjustable reflector has toroidal curvature to reduce diffraction loss through open cavity ends. Primarily used in local oscillator diplexers, new design increases signal to noise ratios and therefore ranges of millimeter and submillimeter hetrodyne receivers.

AFGL trace gas compilation - 1982 version

The new edition of the AFGL trace gas compilation is described. The latest version provides the necessary parameters for the computation of absorption or emission spectra of major bands of twenty-one gases in the region from 0 to 10,000 per cm. Emphasis in this edition has been on the addition of numerous millimeter and submillimeter transitions, the inclusion of bands of significance in upper atmospheric processes, and strong IR bands of trace constituents likely to be used for remote detection. The sources for the additions and modifications of the absorption parameters are summarized.

The rotation-inversion spectra and vibration-rotation interaction in NH2D

An additional 86 lines of the NH2D rotation-inversion spectrum were measured between 7.5 and 850 GHz. These data and the existing NH2D and ND2H data are fitted to a Hamiltonian in which the vibration-rotation interaction is included in the form of an off-diagonal inertial tensor term. For comparison with the symmetric ammonias an oblate basis and a Watson-type reduced 'S' set of distortion constants are used. A theory for the interaction term is given which is in excellent agreement with experiment. Structural parameters are derived. The magnitude and relative sign of the two dipole moment components of NH2D are determined and previously measured nitrogen hyperfine structure for both species is reexamined using improved rotational wavefunctions.

Chlorine monoxide radical, ozone, and hydrogen peroxide - Stratospheric measurements by microwave limb sounding

Profiles of stratospheric ozone and chlorine monoxide radical (ClO) have been obtained from balloon measurements of atmospheric limb thermal emission at millimeter wavelengths. The ClO measurements, important for assessing the predicted depletion of stratospheric ozone by chlorine from industrial sources, are in close agreement with present theory. The predicted decrease of ClO at sunset was measured. A tentative value for the stratospheric abundance of hydrogen peroxide was also determined.

Pressure broadening of phosphine by hydrogen and helium

The line widths, pressure-induced shifts, and center frequency of the J = 1-0, K = 0 phosphine transition at 266.9 GHz have been determined. The widths and shifts are reported for collisions with phosphine, H2, and He.

Pressure broadening of ClO by nitrogen

The temperature and pressure dependence of linewidths for the J = 11/2 - 9/2 and J = 15/2 - 13/2 transitions of ClO are determined by microwave spectroscopy. It is found that the widths for both transitions are the same within experimental error. The width parameter for nitrogen broadening is shown to be 3.35 + or - 0.17 MHz/torr at 317 K and 4.44 + or - 0.23 MHz/torr at 218 K.

Pressure broadening of oxygen and its implications for cosmic background measurements

The pressure broadening of oxygen transitions at 119 and 425 GHz have been measured in the laboratory for nitrogen and oxygen broadening as a function of temperature. The measured values are significantly different from estimates used by Woody and Richards to obtain a secondary calibration in their cosmic background measurements. The effect of the new determination is to move the calibrated cosmic background further from a Planck function.

Submillimeter, millimeter, and microwave spectral line catalogue

A computer accessible catalogue of submillimeter, millimeter and microwave spectral lines in the frequency range between 0 and 3000 GHZ (i.e., wavelengths longer than 100 mu m) is presented which can be used a planning guide or as an aid in the identification and analysis of observed spectral lines. The information listed for each spectral line includes the frequency and its estimated error, the intensity, lower state energy, and quantum number assignment. The catalogue was constructed by using theoretical least squares fits of published spectral lines to accepted molecular models. The associated predictions and their estimated errors are based upon the resultant fitted parameters and their covariances. Future versions of this catalogue will add more atoms and molecules and update the present listings (133 species) as new data appear. The catalogue is available as a magnetic tape recorded in card images and as a set of microfiche records.

The submillimeter wavelength spectrum of methanol

Observations and assignments of some of the absorption lines in methanol from 200 to 850 GHz are reported. A simple phenomenological model is described which allows interpretation of spectra and prediction of new lines with little computational effort.

Effects of velocity averaging on the shapes of absorption lines

The velocity averaging of collision cross sections produces non-Lorentz line shapes, even at densities where Doppler broadening is not apparent. The magnitude of the effects will be described using a model in which the collision broadening depends on a simple velocity power law. The effect of the modified profile on experimental measures of linewidth, shift and amplitude will be examined and an improved approximate line shape will be derived.

Determination of collisional linewidths and shifts by a convolution method

A technique is described for fitting collisional linewidths and shifts from experimental spectral data. The method involves convoluting a low-pressure reference spectrum with a Lorentz shape function and comparing the convoluted spectrum with higher pressure spectra. Several experimental examples are given. One advantage of the method is that no extra information is needed about the instrument response function or spectral modulation. In addition, the method is shown to be relatively insensitive to the presence of reflections in the sample cell.

A 163 micron laser heterodyne radiometer for OH

A 163 micron (1.836 THz) radiometer developed for airplane and/or balloon platforms is described. The laser local oscillator is a CO2 pumped methanol laser operating at a frequency which is approx. 1 GHz from the J = 3/2 - 1/2 transition of OH. The laser is used directly as a local oscillator or is translated in frequency to closer coincidence with the OH emission, depending on achieved detector IF bandwidth. Frequency translation techniques which are described are diode mixing and a method of single sideband generation using an external Stark modulated gas cell. The photoconductive mixer used is a strained Ge crystal, doped with Ga, originally used as an incoherent detector. The uniaxial strain on the Ga doped Ge crystal shifts the threshold for photoconduction from 100/cm to frequencies as low as 50/cm. These detectors are currently being characterized as mixers in the laboratory. Of particular interest are the effect of local oscillator power and strain on IF, bandwidth detector impedance, and conversion loss. Preliminary results of these tests are described and compared with theorectical expectations.

Bulk submillimeter-wave mixers: Strain and superlattices

Strained germanium crystals, doped with gallium, were used as heterodyne mixers at THz frequencies, with infrared bandwidths approaching a GHz. The mixer performance (conversion loss and mixer noise) was analyzed in terms of nonlinearities associated with acceptor levels and with relaxation rates of free holes. Comparison was made with similar mixers employing low lying donor levels in high purity GaAs and with hot electron InSb mixers.
