Balloon-Borne Measurements of Stratospheric Radicals and their Precursors: Implications for the Production and Loss of Ozone

Measurements of hydrogen, nitrogen and chlorine radicals from a balloon flight on 25 September 1993 from Ft. Sumner, NM provide an opportunity to quantify photochemical production and loss of stratospheric ozone. Ozone loss rates determined using measured radical concentrations agree fairly well with loss rates calculated using a photochemical model. Catalytic cycles involving OH and HO2 are shown to dominate photochemical loss of ozone for altitudes between 44 and 50 km. Reactions involving NO and NO2 are the dominant sink for ozone between 25 and 38 km. The total ozone loss rate determined from the measurements balances calculated production rates for altitudes between 30 and 40 km. However, loss of ozone exceeds production by -35% between 42 and 50 km. The imbalance between production and loss of ozone above 42 km is larger than the uncertainty of any one of the critical kinetic parameters or species concentrations. No single adjustment to any of these parameters can simultaneously resolve the imbalance and satisfy constraints imposed by measured OH, HO2, NO2 and ClO. Our results are consistent with an additional mechanism for ozone production above 40 km other than photolysis of ground state O2.

Stratospheric OH measurements with a far-infrared limb observing spectrometer

The Far-Infrared Limb Observing Spectrometer (FILOS) is an instrument designed to measure the hydroxyl radical (OH) and other chemical species in the upper atmosphere using limb emission in the far-infrared region of the spectrum. FILOS uses three Fabry-Perot etalons in series to obtain high spectral resolution near 101/cm and 118/cm. The instrument concept, calibration, and atmospheric measurements are discussed.

Rotational spectra of the X 2Sigma(+) states of CaH and CaD

The rotational spectra of the 2Sigma(2+) ground states of calcium monohydride and monodeuteride have been recorded in absorption between 250 and 700 GHz. The gas phase free radicals have been produced in a ceramic furnace by the reaction of elemental calcium with molecular hydrogen or deuterium in the presence of an electrical discharge. The molecular constants including the rotational constant, centrifugal distortion constants, spin-rotation constants, and magnetic hyperfine interaction constants have been extracted from the spectra.

Absolute absorption of ozone in the midinfrared

The absolute absorption of ozone in the midinfrared has been measured relative to 253.7-nm ultraviolet absorption to an accuracy of 1 percent using a Fourier transform spectrometer. These new results agree with previous measurements by diode laser measurements after the latter are corrected for more recent infrared calculations and ultraviolet cross sections. They also agree with a determination based on refractive index measurements in the infrared.

Submillimeter, millimeter, and microwave spectral line catalogue, revision 3

A computer-accessible catalog of submillimeter, millimeter, and microwave spectral lines in the frequency range between 0 and 10,000 GHz (i.e., wavelengths longer than 30 micrometers) is described. The catalog can be used as a planning or as an aid in the identification and analysis of observed spectral lines. The information listed for each spectral line includes the frequency and its estimated error, the intensity, the lower state energy, and the quantum number assignment. This edition of the catalog has information on 206 atomic and molecular species and includes a total of 630,924 lines. The catalog was constructed by using theoretical least square fits of published spectral lines to accepted molecular models. The associated predictions and their estimated errors are based upon the resultant fitted parameters and their covariances. Future versions of this catalog will add more atoms and molecules and update the present listings as new data appear. The catalog is available as a magnetic data tape recorded in card images, with one card image per spectral line, from the National Space Science Data Center, located at Goddard Space Flight Center.

Search for H2D(+) at 372 GHz in dense interstellar clouds

The 1(10)-1(11) transition of ortho-H2D(+) at 372 GHz has been sought in several dark clouds. The transition was not detected; the best upper limits obtained are about 0.3 K (3 sigma). We derive upper limits for the ortho-H2D(+) column density and briefly discuss their meaning in comparison with a simple chemical model we have developed (Pagani et al., 1992).

Cryogenic far-infrared Fabry-Perot etalon

A small cryogenic Fabry-Perot etalon was fabricated for the far-infrared region. The design used freestanding metal meshes for the reflecting elements. Using a combination of gold-coated copper mesh on stainless steel. The spacing is reproduced to 1 part in 10 exp 6 with repeated cooling. The properties and methods used for alignment and calibration are presented.

Water in dense molecular clouds

The G.P. Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) was used to make initial observations of the half-millimeter ground-state transition of water in seven giant molecular clouds and in two late-type stars. No significant detections were made, and the resulting upper limits are significantly below those expected from other, indirect observations and from several theoretical models. The implied interstellar H2O/CO abundance is less than 0.003 in the cores of three giant molecular clouds. This value is less than expected from cloud chemistry models and also than estimates based on HDO and H3O(+) observations.
