A Non-perturbative Approach to Computing Seismic Normal Modes in Rotating Planets

In this work, a continuous Galerkin method based approach is presented to compute the seismic normal modes of rotating planets. Special care is taken to separate out the essential spectrum in the presence of a fluid outer core using a polynomial filtering eigensolver. The relevant elastic-gravitational system of equations, including the Coriolis force, is subjected to a mixed finite-element method, while self-gravitation is accounted for with the fast multipole method. Our discretization utilizes fully unstructured tetrahedral meshes for both solid and fluid regions. The relevant eigenvalue problem is solved by a combination of several highly parallel and computationally efficient methods. We validate our three-dimensional results in the non-rotating case using analytical results for constant elastic balls, as well as numerical results for an isotropic Earth model from standard “radial” algorithms. We also validate the computations in the rotating case, but only in the slowly-rotating regime where perturbation theory applies, because no other independent algorithms are available in the general case. The algorithm and code are used to compute the point spectra of eigenfrequencies in several Earth and Mars models studying the effects of heterogeneity on a large range of scales.

Monofluorination of Naphthyls Promotes the Cofacial π–π Stacking and Increases the Electron Mobility of Non-Planar Zinc(II) Complexes of Di(naphthylethynyl)azadipyrromethene

The homoleptic zinc(II) complex of [2,8-di(1-naphthylethynyl) 3,7-diphenyl 1,9-(4-hexylphenyl)azadipyrromethene (ZnL2) 2 ] is a promising non-planar non-fullerene acceptor for organic photovoltaic applications, but it has a relatively low electron mobility that may limit its performance. Here, we explored the fluorination of peripheral aryl groups to increase intermolecular cofacial π–π stacking interactions, which are desirable for electron transport. Here complexes with fluorine on the distal phenyls [Zn(1F-L2) 2 ], on the naphthyls [Zn(2F-L2) 2 ], and on both [Zn(3F-L2) 2 ] were synthesized and characterized. All three complexes had similar optical and electrochemical properties. The crystal packing structure of Zn(2F-L2) 2 and Zn(3F-L2) 2 revealed cofacial parallel-displaced π–π stacking between the fluorinated 1-naphthylethynyl groups. Such a cofacial orientation was not observed in Zn(L2) 2 crystals, suggesting that fluorination of the naphthyl groups promotes the cofacial π–π stacking orientation. The hole mobility increased from 1.0 × 10 –4 cm 2 V –1 s –1 for Zn(L2) 2 to 0.8–1.0 × 10 –3 cm 2 V –1 s –1 for the fluorinated complexes. Fluorination on the naphthyl groups increased the electron mobility from 4.2 × 10 –5 cm 2 V –1 s –1 for Zn(L2) 2 and Zn(1F-L2) 2 to 2.0 × 10 –4 cm 2 V –1 s –1 for Zn(2F-L2) 2 and Zn(3F-L2) 2 , consistent with cofacial π–π stacking being favorable for electron transport. The three complexes were tested in OPVs using regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as the p-type material, and the best power conversion efficiencies were 5.2, 5.4, and 5.8% for Zn(2F-L2) 2 , Zn(1F-L2) 2 , and Zn(3F-L2) 2 , respectively, compared to 5.5% for Zn(L2) 2 . The fluorination combination found in Zn(3F-L2) 2 resulted in the best device performance. This study points to a viable strategy to increase the electron mobility and performance of non-planar zinc(II) complexes of azadipyrromethene.

Verifying the structure-property-performance relationship of Y6-based small molecule acceptors by alkoxy-side chain isomerization and conjugated skeleton asymmetry

Non-fullerene small molecule acceptors (NF-SMAs) such as Y6 derivatives were the current working horse for the top performing polymer solar cells (PSCs). For this reason, numerous chemical modifications have been explored for establishing structure–property-performance relationship for Y6-based NF-SMAs. In this work, we explored the isomerization on asymmetrical Y6 derivatives by varying the position of alkoxy side chain on the thiophene linkage between the core and one of the end groups of Y6. The isomers with differences in conformational restriction raised by noncovalent interactions as well as steric hindrance revealed distinctive behavior in crystallization and polymorphism, which led to a significant contrast in PSC performances. Here the X-TO1 molecule with alkoxy side chain facing the end group (outward) displayed preferred molecular configuration and polymorph, delivering power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.63%, while its isomer X-TO2 showed coexisted polymorphs significantly increased the charge recombination in the PSC devices led to a low PCE around 3%. This structure–property-performance relationship not only highlighted the elegancy of isomerization in tuning the photovoltaic performances but also identified polymorphism as one of the causes for impairing photovoltaic performances of PSCs.

Relaxor ferroelectric polymer exhibits ultrahigh electromechanical coupling at low electric field

Electromechanical (EM) coupling—the conversion of energy between electric and mechanical forms—in ferroelectrics has been used for a broad range of applications. Ferroelectric polymers have weak EM coupling that severely limits their usefulness for applications. Here, we introduced a small amount of fluorinated alkyne (FA) monomers (<2 mol %) in relaxor ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE-CFE) terpolymer that markedly enhances the polarization change with strong EM coupling while suppressing other polarization changes that do not contribute to it. Under a low–dc bias field of 40 megavolts per meter, the relaxor tetrapolymer has an EM coupling factor (k 33 ) of 88% and a piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 ) >1000 picometers per volt. These values make this solution-processed polymer competitive with ceramic oxide piezoelectrics, with the potential for use in distinct applications.

Unique W-Shape Y6 isomer as effective solid additive for High-Performance PM6:Y6 polymer solar cells

The current top-performing polymer solar cell (PSC) systems are mostly based on PM6:Y6 host blend. To date, numerous materials have been explored as the third component for these systems to form ternary blends or as additives. Vitrification agents are a group of additives proved to be useful in affecting the morphology of organic semiconductors. Here to design a suitable vitrification agent for non-fullerene electron acceptor Y6, an isomer strategy was explored where the thienothiophene wings of the Y6 molecule were inversed to form a W-shaped Y6 isomer of i-Y6. It was found that i-Y6 crystallized poorly with a different packing style than Y6 and could blend well in amorphous phase of Y6. These properties enabled i-Y6 to finely tune the morphology of PM6:Y6 blend at low additive dosages. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PM6:Y6 based PSC was raised from 16.827% to 17.433% at a dosage of Y6:i-Y6 ratio of 24:1. This work demonstrated isomerization as a viable strategy for developing solid additives for high performance PSC blends and vitrification agents as effective additives for tuning morphology and improving performances of PSCs.

Neumann Series in MGS-GMRES and Inner-Outer Iterations: Preprint

A low-synchronization MGS-GMRES Krylov solver employing a truncated Neumann series for the inverse compact WY MGS correction matrix T is presented. A corollary to the backward stability result of Paige et al. [1] establishes that T = I - Lk is sufficient for convergence of GMRES when kLkp F = O("p)_p F (B), where the strictly lower triangular matrix L is defined by the inner products of Krylov vectors V T 1:k-2 vk-1. The preconditioner is the classical Ruge-Stuben AMG algorithm with compatible relaxation and inner-outer Gauss-Seidel smoother. This smoother may also be expressed as a truncated Neumann series. Drop tolerances are applied to the lower triangular matrices arising in the smoother in order to reduce the number of non-zeros and accelerate the time to solution. The number of small matrix elements are found to increase from fine to coarse levels and thus the effciency gains are greater for large problems with many levels in the V -cycle. The solver is applied to the pressure continuity equation for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Unlike the inner-outer iteration, the solver convergence rate with the standard Gauss-Seidel smoother deteriorates with dropping. The solver compute time is reduced by up to 50% without a change in the convergence rate.

Cost-Efficiency balanced polymer acceptors based on lowly fused Dithienopyrrolo[3, 2b]benzothiadiazole for 16.04% efficiency All-Polymer solar cells

All-polymer solar cells (All-PSCs) attracted increasing attention due to the outstanding thermal stability and mechanical properties. The current prevailing polymer acceptors for most efficient All-PSCs are polymerized high-performance small molecule acceptor of Y6, i.e. the dithienothiopheno[3,2-b]-pyrrolobenzothiadiazole (BTTP) based polymers. However, the BTTP-based polymers often show relatively shallow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level and high figure of merit (FOM), which limit the rational selection of paring donor polymers. Herein, we presented two low-cost polymer acceptors, namely as BTP-T2F and BTP-2T2F, based on lowly fused dithienopyrrolo[3,2b]benzothiadiazole (BTP, removing two thiophene cycles from BTTP). Here the BTP-based polymers exhibited deeper HOMO levels around –5.90 eV, which could match variable donor polymers with low-lying HOMO levels, such as low-cost PTQ10. Additionally, the synthesis was significantly simplified compared to BTTP-based polymers. A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.32% was achieved in binary blend device containing PTQ10:BTP-2T2F. By adding a miscibility-enhancing PBDTCl-TPD as a third component, the top PCE of 16.04% was obtained in ternary blend All-PSCs. Combining the high device performance and low estimated cost, extraordinary cost-efficiency balance was realized within these BTP-based polymer acceptors.

A universal co-solvent dilution strategy enables facile and cost-effective fabrication of perovskite photovoltaics

Cost management and toxic waste generation are two key issues that must be addressed before the commercialization of perovskite optoelectronic devices. We report a groundbreaking strategy for eco-friendly and cost-effective fabrication of highly efficient perovskite solar cells. This strategy involves the usage of a high volatility co-solvent, which dilutes perovskite precursors to a lower concentration (<0.5 M) while retaining similar film quality and device performance as a high concentration (>1.4 M) solution. More than 70% of toxic waste and material cost can be reduced. Mechanistic insights reveal ultra-rapid evaporation of the co-solvent together with beneficial alteration of the precursor colloidal chemistry upon dilution with co-solvent, which in-situ studies and theoretical simulations confirm. The co-solvent tuned precursor colloidal properties also contribute to the enhancement of the stability of precursor solution, which extends its processing window thus minimizing the waste. This strategy is universally successful across different perovskite compositions, and scales from small devices to large-scale modules using industrial spin-coating, potentially easing the lab-to-fab translation of perovskite technologies.

A novel polypeptide vaccine and adjuvant formulation of EV71

ABSTRACT Hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is an infectious disease mainly caused by Enterovirus 71 (EV 71). However, the effective treatment is limited currently. The aim of this study was to investigate the activity of the vaccine including the EV71 polypeptides mixed with a novel adjuvant containing CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG ODNs). After collecting mouse sera, we determined the antibody concentration in serum by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Then, CD19+CD27+ B cells in the spleen were analysed by flow cytometry. The assay revealed that a substantial increase in antibody titers was achieved. This indicates a high level of immunogenicity for peptide vaccine and the good stability of adjuvant, also suggests that the combination of vaccine and adjuvant can stimulate the production of high-level antibodies and CD19+CD27+ B lymphocytes in mice. Furthermore, the antibody could effectively identify EV71 inactivated virus. The results demonstrated that the autonomous construction of EV71 polypeptide vaccine had a good immunogenicity. Moreover, the peptide vaccine injection with a novel adjuvant, which is easy to prepare, could cause a high antibody level of EV71 and shown a good application prospect.

Preparing an Incompressible-Flow Fluid Dynamics Code for Exascale-Class Wind Energy Simulations

The U.S. Department of Energy has identified exascale-class wind farm simulation as critical to wind energy scientific discovery. A primary objective of the ExaWind project is to build high-performance, predictive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools that satisfy these modeling needs. GPU accelerators will serve as the computational thoroughbreds of next-generation, exascale-class supercomputers. Here, we report on our efforts in preparing the ExaWind unstructured mesh solver, Nalu-Wind, for exascale-class machines. For computing at this scale, a simple port of the incompressible-flow algorithms to GPUs is insufficient. To achieve high performance, one needs novel algorithms that are application aware, memory efficient, and optimized for the latest-generation GPU devices. The result of our efforts are unstructured-mesh simulations of wind turbines that can effectively leverage thousands of GPUs. In particular, we demonstrate a first-of-its-kind, incompressible-flow simulation using Algebraic Multigrid solvers that strong scales to more than 4000 GPUs on the Summit supercomputer.

Polymer Solar Cells with 18.74% Efficiency: From Bulk Heterojunction to Interdigitated Bulk Heterojunction

The most popular approach to fabricating organic solar cells (OSCs) is solution processing a mixture of donor (D) and acceptor (A) materials into an active layer with a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) nanostructure. In this work, it is demonstrated that the interdigitated heterojunction (IHJ) is a more suitable nanostructure of the active layer for high-performance OSCs whereas it is a long standing challenge to realize well-defined IHJ structures. Here, a facile and versatile sequential solution processing method is developed to produce an IHJ nanostructure with power conversion efficiency reaching 18.74% (18.10% for BHJ the counterpart) by fabricating a donor film with nanopores created by a wax additive, sequentially casting the acceptor on top of infiltrating the nanopores. Compared to the BHJ, the IHJ structure with an interpillar distance within the exciton diffusion length can afford a large bulk D/A interface for efficient exciton dissociation with a minimized charge recombination while free electrons and holes can transport to the respective electrodes through more straightforward pathways, thus enhance performance. Furthermore, the D or A phase in the IHJ device contacts with only one electrode, which can prevent shunting between the anode and cathode and facilitate the industrial mass production of OSCs.

Porting hypre to heterogeneous computer architectures: Strategies and experiences

We report that linear systems are occurring in many applications, and solving them can take a large amount of the total simulation time. The high performance library hypre provides a variety of interfaces and linear solvers, including various multigrid methods, that have achieved good scalability on a variety of homogeneous parallel computer architectures. Heterogeneous architectures with nodes that have both CPUs and accelerators provide new challenges, since they require more fine-grained parallelism and reduced data movement between different memories on a single node as well as across nodes. We will discuss our experiences and strategies to port hypre to heterogeneous computers with accelerators, including the design of a new memory model, the use of abstractions, the BoxLoop macros in the structured and semi-structured interfaces, and the restructuring of algebraic multigrid (AMG) into modular components. We present numerical experiments comparing CPU and GPU performance for several test problems.

Ordered hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline self-assembly of mesogen-free sulfonylated side-chain chiral polyethers and their high dielectric property

To achieve large spontaneous polarization for ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers, we have designed a series of mesogen-free isotactic polyethers with sulfonylated side chains. Different from prior studies using linear alkyl side chains, in this work a methyl branch was implemented in the alkyl side chains of the chiral polyethers. As a result of the continuous twist from the methyl branches and strong dipole-dipole interactions among neighboring sulfonyl groups, a helical chain conformation with tilted side chains was achieved. When the branched side chains were short (e.g., C5) and double chirality existed in both the main chain and side chains, a crystalline structure was obtained. When the branched side chains were long (e.g., ≥ C8) and single chirality existed in the main chain, an ordered hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline phase was induced. Their high-field dielectric property was studied by electric displacement-electric field (D-E) loop tests; however, no ferroelectric behavior was observed up to 200 MV/m. It was considered that the dipole-dipole interaction among neighboring sulfonyl groups in the helical chains was too strong to allow easy ferroelectric flipping.

Grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction tomography for characterizing organic thin films

Characterization of thin films is of paramount importance for evaluating material processing outcomes/efficiency as well as establishing structure–property/performance relationships. This article introduces grazing-incidence diffraction tomography (GID tomography), a technique that combines grazing-incidence X-ray scattering and computed tomography to quantitatively determine the dimension and orientation of crystalline domains in thin films without restrictions on the beam coherence, substrate type or film thickness. This computational method extends the capability of synchrotron beamlines by utilizing standard X-ray scattering experiment setups.

Side chain engineering control of mixed conduction in oligoethylene glycol-substituted polythiophenes

A major limitation for polymeric mixed ionic/electronic conductors (MIECs) is the trade-off between ionic and electronic conductivity; changes made that improve one typically hinder the other. In order to address this fundamental problem, this work provides insight into ways that we could improve one type of conduction without hindering the other. Here, we investigated a common oligoethylene glycol side chain polymer by adjusting the oxygen atom content and position, providing structural insights for materials that better balanced the two conduction pathways. The investigated polymer series showed the prototypical conflict between ionic and electronic conduction for oxygen atom content, with increasing oxygen atom content increasing ionic conductivity, but decreasing electronic conductivity; however, by increasing the oxygen atom distance from the polymer backbone, both ionic and electronic conductivity could be improved. Following these rules, we show that poly(3-(methoxyethoxybutyl)thiophene), when blended with lithium bistrifluoromethanesulfonimide (LiTFSI), matches the ionic conductivity of a comparable MIEC [poly(3-(methoxyethoxyethoxymethyl)thiophene)], while simultaneously showing higher electronic conductivity, highlighting the potential of this design strategy. We also provide strategies for tuning the MIEC performance to fit a desired application, depending on if electronic, ionic, or balanced conduction is most important. These results have implications beyond just polythiophene-based MIECs, as these strategies for balancing backbone crystallization and coordinating group interconnectivity apply for all semicrystalline conjugated polymers.
