Gaussian processes for autonomous data acquisition at large-scale synchrotron and neutron facilities

The execution and analysis of complex experiments are challenged by the vast dimensionality of the underlying parameter spaces. Although an increase in data-acquisition rates should allow broader querying of the parameter space, the complexity of experiments and the subtle dependence of the model function on input parameters remains daunting owing to the sheer number of variables. New strategies for autonomous data acquisition are being developed, with one promising direction being the use of Gaussian process regression (GPR). GPR is a quick, non-parametric and robust approximation and uncertainty quantification method that can be applied directly to autonomous data acquisition. We review GPR-driven autonomous experimentation and illustrate its functionality using real-world examples from large experimental facilities in the USA and France. We introduce the basics of a GPR-driven autonomous loop with a focus on Gaussian processes, and then shift the focus to the infrastructure that needs to be built around GPR to create a closed loop. Finally, the case studies we discuss show that Gaussian-process-based autonomous data acquisition is a widely applicable method that can facilitate the optimal use of instruments and facilities by enabling the efficient acquisition of high-value datasets.

A New Class of AMG Interpolation Methods Based on Matrix-Matrix Multiplications

A new class of distance-two interpolation methods for algebraic multigrid (AMG) that can be formulated in terms of sparse matrix-matrix multiplications is presented and analyzed. Compared with similar distance-two prolongation operators, the proposed algorithms exhibit improved efficiency and portability to various computing platforms, since they allow one to easily exploit existing high-performance sparse matrix kernels. The new interpolation methods have been implemented in hypre, a widely used parallel multigrid solver library. With the proposed interpolations, the overall time of hypre's BoomerAMG setup can be considerably reduced, while sustaining equivalent, sometimes improved, convergence rates. Numerical results for a variety of test problems on parallel machines are presented that support the superiority of the proposed interpolation operators over the existing ones in hypre.

Tuning the Double Gyroid Phase Window in Block Copolymers via Polymer Chain Conformation Near the Interface

Block copolymer network morphologies have been proven interesting for applications ranging from mechanical to transport and optical properties. The shape of the polymer chain and its ability to stretch across an interface can be used as handles to target these network morphologies. Here, we show that the double gyroid phase window is broadened when there is a flexible segment near the interface and narrowed when a more constrained segment is placed there by using a series of poly(styrene-b-peptoid) block copolymers in which the polypeptoid block chain conformation can be tuned to adopt either a helical or a coil conformation (NRpe 6 vs Npe 6 ). The double gyroid phase is accessed in both block copolymer series, while the phase boundaries are shifted toward larger polypeptoid volume fractions in the helix-forming PS–(NRpe 6 Nmey) series, due to the more compact helix segment (i.e., the helix segment has the same chain volume as its random coil counterpart but occupies less space). The space-filling difference between the helix and coil segment is further confirmed by the smaller domain spacing of PS–(NRpe 6 Nme 39 ) compared to PS–(Npe 6 Nme 36 ) (13.9 nm vs 14.3 nm) despite the former having a longer polypeptoid block. Furthermore, a broadened double gyroid phase window is accessed in the PS–(Npe 6 Nme y ) series that has a flexible coil segment near the interface. These results demonstrate the possibility of tuning the double gyroid phase in linear block copolymers by chain conformation near the interface alone, highlighting chain conformation as a versatile handle in block copolymer design.

Molecular packing modulation enabling optimized blend morphology and efficient all small molecule organic solar cells

The molecular planarity of a small molecule donor is one of the key factors affecting its molecular packing behavior, the morphology of the related active blend and thus the photovoltaic properties of all small molecule organic solar cells (ASM-OSCs). Here, a series of new benzodithiophene (BDT)-based A-π-D-π-A type small molecules were developed, namely SD1, SD2 and SD3, by combining the chemical modification of side chain (sulfuration), π-bridge (alkoxy groups introducing) and end group (different type or different alkyl chain). The sulfuration of the BDT side chains and introducing alkoxy group to the π-bridge could induce intermolecular S … S and intramolecular S … O non-covalent interactions for higher planarity of these small molecules. The rhodanine and cyanoacetate end groups showed less effect on the optical and electronic properties but significantly affected the molecular packing behavior and blend morphology. From SD1:Y6-T to SD2:Y6-T and SD3:Y6-T, the face-to-face packing was gradually reduced, while the face-to-edge packing was increased, which resulted in lowered exciton dissociation efficiency, further decreased the device performance. SD1:Y6-T blend exhibited more favorable face-to-face packing and ideal morphology for efficient charge dissociation and transport, contributing to a champion PCE of 10.12%. This work provided a deep insight of the donor and acceptor packing behavior effect on the photovoltaic property by molecular design.

Mono- and bilayer smectic liquid crystal ordering in dense solutions of “gapped” DNA duplexes

Significance Liquid crystalline behavior of DNA has been studied for decades, yet only recently has one of the most fundamental liquid crystal phases—the smectic phase in which rod-like objects assemble into stacks of fluid layers—been demonstrated in this system. Here, we describe distinct bilayer and monolayer smectic phases in solutions of “gapped” DNA (GDNA), consisting of two DNA duplexes connected by a single strand. The smectic order is amphotropic (sensitive to temperature as well as concentration), and the layer structure is stable against significant perturbations of the GDNA construct (e.g., “gap” length variation and asymmetry in duplex lengths). The temperature sensitivity may provide a means to compare end-to-end interaction strengths between DNA duplexes at biologically relevant concentrations.

N-Doping improves charge transport and morphology in the organic non-fullerene acceptor O-IDTBR

Molecular doping has been shown to improve the performance of various organic (opto)electronic devices. When compared to p-doped systems, research into n-doped organic small-molecules is relatively limited, primarily due to the lack of suitable dopants and the often encountered unfavourable microstructural effects. These factors have prevented the use of n-doping in a wider range of existing materials, such as non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), that have already shown great promise for a range of (opto)electronic applications. Here, we show that several different molecular n-dopants, namely [1,2-b:2',1'-d]benzo[i][2.5]benzodiazocine potassium triflate adduct (DMBI-BDZC), tetra-n-butylammonium fluoride (TBAF) and 4-(2,3-dihydro-1,3-dimethyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-N,N-dimethylbenzenamine (N-DMBI), can be used to n-dope the molecular semiconductor O-IDTBR, a promising NFA, and increase the electron field-effect mobility to >1 cm 2 V -1 s -1 . By combining complementary experimental techniques with computer simulations of doping and charge carrier dynamics, we show that improved charge transport arises from synergistic effects of n-type doping and morphological changes. Specifically, a new, previously unreported dopant-induced packing orientation results in one of the highest electron mobility values reported to-date for an NFA molecule. Overall, this work highlights the importance of dopant–semiconductor interactions and their impact on morphology, showing that dopant-induced molecular packing motifs may be generic and a key element of the charge transport enhancement observed in doped organics.

Performance Evaluation of hypre Solvers

This report compares GPU and CPU performance of structured and unstructured hypre solvers on Lassen and Summit. We applied the solvers to various problems of different sizes varying the number of nodes and processes. We provide the individual results for setup phase and solve phase, since preconditioned solvers are often used in different settings. While for a single system solve the total time is determined by the sum of setup and solve time, this can change for different scenarios. For example, in time dependent problems the preconditioner might have to be setup only occasionally or possibly even only once. In that situation solve times will dominate. Thus, since often better GPU speedups can be attained in the solve phase, this will lead to generally better speedups.

Enhanced piezoelectricity from highly polarizable oriented amorphous fractions in biaxially oriented poly(vinylidene fluoride) with pure β crystals

Piezoelectric polymers hold great potential for various electromechanical applications, but only show low performance, with |d 33 |< 30 pC/N. We prepare a highly piezoelectric polymer (d 33 = -62 pC/N) based on a biaxially oriented poly(vinylidene fluoride) (BOPVDF, crystallinity = 0.52). After unidirectional poling, macroscopically aligned samples with pure β crystals are achieved, which show a high spontaneous polarization (P s ) of 140 mC/m 2 . Given the theoretical limit of P s,β = 188 mC/m 2 for the neat β crystal, the high P s cannot be explained by the crystalline-amorphous two-phase model (i.e., P s,β = 270 mC/m 2 ). Instead, we deduce that a significant amount (at least 0.25) of an oriented amorphous fraction (OAF) must be present between these two phases. Experimental data suggest that the mobile OAF resulted in the negative and high d 33 for the poled BOPVDF. The plausibility of this conclusion is supported by molecular dynamics simulations.

Solvent-Free Coating of Organic Semiconductor Membranes with Centimetric Crystalline Domains

Organic semiconductors (OSCs) have shown great promise in a variety of applications. Although solution processing of OSCs has resulted in high-quality films, exquisite control of structural development to minimize defect formation during large-scale fabrication remains formidable. Compounding this challenge is the use of halogenated organic solvents, which poses significant health and environmental hazards. However, the solvent-free techniques introduced thus far impose additional limitations on solidification kinetics; the resulting OSC thin films are often more defective than those processed from solution. Here, a solvent-free technique is reported to prepare OSC membranes with centimetric crystalline domains. Leveraging the tendency for liquid crystalline materials to preferentially orient, OSCs are “prealigned” by depositing them from the melt over a metal frame to form a freely suspended membrane. Additionally, crystallization from this prealigned phase affords membranes with unprecedented structural order across macroscopic distances. Field-effect transistors comprising membranes of dioctyl[1]-benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C8BTBT) and didodecyl[1]-benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C12BTBT) having centimeter-sized domains as active layers exhibit a hole mobility of ≈8.6 cm2 V -1 s -1 , superseding the mobility of any transistors whose active layers are deposited from melt. This technique is scalable to yield membranes with large crystalline domains over wafer dimensions, making it amenable for broad applications in large-area organic electronics.

Planetary normal mode computation: Parallel algorithms, performance and reproducibility

This report is an extension of work entitled “Computing planetary interior normal modes with a highly parallel polynomial filtering eigensolver.” by Shi et al., [1] originally presented at the SC18 conference. A highly parallel polynomial filtered eigensolver was developed and exploited to calculate the planetary normal modes. The proposed method is ideally suited for computing interior eigenpairs for large-scale eigenvalue problems as it greatly enhances memory and computational efficiency. In this article, the second-order finite element method is used to further improve the accuracy as only the first-order finite element method was deployed in the previous work. The parallel algorithm, its parallel performance up to 20k processors, and the great computational accuracy are illustrated. The reproducibility of the previous work was successfully performed on the Student Cluster Competition at the SC19 conference by several participant teams using a completely different Mars-model dataset on different clusters. Both weak and strong scaling performances of the reproducibility by the participant teams were impressive and encouraging. The analysis and reflection of their results are demonstrated and future direction is discussed.

Role of Postdeposition Thermal Annealing on Intracrystallite and Intercrystallite Structuring and Charge Transport in Poly(3-hexylthiophene)

The performance of electronic devices comprising conjugated polymers as the active layer depends not only on the intrinsic characteristics of the materials but also on the details of the extrinsic processing conditions. Here, we examine the effect of postdeposition thermal treatments on the microstructure of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) thin films and its impact on their electrical properties. Unsurprisingly, we find thermal annealing of P3HT thin films to generally increase their crystallinity and crystallite coherence length while retaining the same crystal structure. Despite such favorable structural improvements of the polymer active layers, however, thermal annealing at high temperatures can lead to a net reduction in the mobility of transistors, implicating structural changes in the intercrystallite amorphous regions of these semicrystalline active layers take place on annealing, and the simplistic picture that crystallinity governs charge transport is not always valid. Our results instead suggest tie-chain pullout, which occurs during crystal growth and perfection upon thermal annealing to govern charge transport, particularly in low-molecular-weight systems in which the tie-chain fraction is low. By demonstrating the interplay between intracrystallite and intercrystallite structuring in determining the macroscopic charge transport, we shed light on how structural evolution and charge-transport properties of nominally the same polymer can vary depending on the details of processing.

Giant spontaneous polarization for enhanced ferroelectric properties of biaxially oriented poly(vinylidene fluoride) by mobile oriented amorphous fractions

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its random copolymers exhibit the most distinctive ferroelectric properties; however, their spontaneous polarization (60–105 mC m -2 ) is still inferior to those (>200 mC m -2 ) of the ceramic counterparts. In this work, we report an unprecedented spontaneous polarization ( P s = 140 mC m -2 ) for a highly poled biaxially oriented PVDF (BOPVDF) film, which contains a pure β crystalline phase. Given the crystallinity of ~0.52, the P s for the β phase ( P s,β ) is calculated to be 279 mC m -2 , if a simple two-phase model of semicrystalline polymers is assumed. This high P s,β is invalid, because the theoretical limit of P s,β is 185 mC m -2 , as calculated by density functional theory. To explain such a high P s for the poled BOPVDF, a third component in the amorphous phase must participate in the ferroelectric switching to contribute to the P s . Namely, an oriented amorphous fraction (OAF) links the lamellar crystal and the mobile amorphous fraction. From the hysteresis loop study, the OAF content was determined to be ~0.28, more than 50% of the amorphous phase. Because of the high polarizability of the OAFs, the dielectric constant of the poled BOPVDF reached nearly twice the value of conventional PVDF. Overall, the fundamental knowledge obtained from this study will provide a solid foundation for the future development of PVDF-based high performance electroactive polymers for wearable electronics and soft robotic applications.

Ultrastructure of Critical-Gel-like Polyzwitterion–Polyoxometalate Complex Coacervates: Effects of Temperature, Salt Concentration, and Shear

The structure of unconventional complex coacervates, such as polymer-nonpolymer complex coacervates, remains less investigated than that of the conventional coacervates formed between oppositely charged polyelectrolytes with symmetric charge species. Yet, their microscopic structural organization is important to further elucidate the mechanism of liquid-liquid-phase separation processes upon complexation. In this work, we characterize the microstructural organization of complex coacervates formed between inorganic polyoxometalate (POM) and polyzwitterion by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) with in situ temperature and shear control. Furthermore, despite the apparent transparent and homogeneous morphology of dense coacervates as observed by optical microscopy, our previous results (Macromolecules 2018, 51, 22, 9405-9411) suggest that dense polyzwitterion-POM coacervates exhibit critical-gel-like networks containing both complex-poor region (mesh pore) and complex-rich region (connective network). SAXS results as reported in this work support that the complex-rich region is actually in the form of loosely packed POM aggregates linked by polyzwitterion, designated as complex particles. The structure of aggregating complex particles is further examined against varied composition and salt concentrations, temperature, and shear, thanks to the high X-ray scattering contrast of POMs from that of other components in the coacervates. The complex particles in the dense coacervates appear to grow with more tightly packed POM aggregates with increasing POM-to-polyzwitterion concentration ratio, in contrast to more loosely packed POM aggregates with decreasing salt concentration. Conversely, increasing temperature could result in smaller complex particles containing more loosely packed POM aggregates, consistent with temperature-dependent viscoelasticity of dense coacervates. Furthermore, such POM-based hybrid dense coacervates exhibit intriguing strain-hardening behavior, resulting from shear-enhanced POM packing inside the complex particles. Distinct from the shear-thinning behavior of most conventional crosslinked polymeric networks, the strain-hardening property combined with thermal- and salt-responsive characteristics of polyzwitterion-POM coacervates could broaden the applications of hybrid organic-inorganic macroion coacervates as smart functional materials working under extreme environmental conditions.

Origins of Electrostriction in Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-Based Ferroelectric Polymers

Although electrostriction is ubiquitous for dielectric polymers, giant electrostriction has not been observed until relaxor ferroelectric (RFE) poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based polymers are achieved. However, the exact origin for giant electrostriction in these polymers has not been fully understood. By studying the electrostriction in the uniaxially stretched films of a ferroelectric poly(VDF-co-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] random copolymer and an RFE poly(VDF-co-TrFE-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)] random terpolymer in this work, we confirmed that ferroelectric switching with large hysteresis, such as in the case of P(VDF-TrFE), was not genuine electrostriction. By decreasing large ferroelectric domains to the nanometer scale (i.e., 2–3 nm), such as in the case of the P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) terpolymer, electrostriction with low hysteresis could be achieved. Here, two origins of the large electrostriction in these polymers were identified. The first was the mechano-electrostriction due to the poling field-induced conformation transformation of oriented polymer chains. The second was the electric repulsion of electrically aligned nanodomains. These effects could occur in both crystals and the oriented amorphous fraction, which links between the nanocrystals and the isotropic amorphous fraction. When the poling field was relatively low (e.g., <40 MV/m), the mechano-electrostriction was the major contribution and the electric repulsion effect was a minor contribution to electrostriction. Meanwhile, a strong temperature dependence of the low-field electrostriction coefficient was observed. Finally, we found an empirical inverse relationship between the electrostriction coefficient and the product of Young’s modulus and dielectric constant. The knowledge obtained from this study provides an insightful understanding of the electrostriction mechanism in PVDF-based electroactive polymers, which will find potential applications in sensors and actuators for wearable electronics and soft robotics.

Confinement and Processing Can Alter the Morphology and Periodicity of Bottlebrush Block Copolymers in Thin Films

Bottlebrush block copolymers (BBCPs) are intriguing architectural variations on linear BCPs with highly tunable structure. Confinement can have a significant impact on polymer assembly, giving rise to changes in morphology, assembly kinetics, and properties like the glass transition. Given that confinement leads to significant changes in the persistence length of bottlebrush homopolymers, it is reasonable to expect that BBCPs will see significant changes in their structure and periodicity relative to the bulk morphology. Understanding how confinement influences assembly will be important for designing BBCPs for thin film applications including membranes, integrated photonic structures, and potentially BCP lithography. In this work, in order to study the effects of confinement on BBCP conformation and morphology, a blade coating was used to prepare films with continuous variation in film thickness. Unlike thin films of linear BCPs, islands/holes were not observed, and instead mixtures of parallel and perpendicular morphologies emerge after annealing. The lamellar periodicity ($L_0$) of the morphologies is found to be thickness dependent, increasing $L_0$ with decreasing film thickness for blade coated films. Films coated out of tetrahydrofuran (THF) resulted in a single well-defined lamellar periodicity, verified through atomic force microscopy (AFM) and grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), which increases dramatically from the bulk value (30.6 nm) and continues to increase as the film thickness decreases. The largest observed $L_0$ was 65.5 nm, and this closely approaches the estimated upper limit of 67 nm corresponding to a fully extended backbone in a bilayer arrangement. Films coated out of propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (PGMEA) resulted in a mixture of perpendicular lamellae and a smaller, likely cylindrical morphology. The lamellar portion of the film shows the same thickness dependence as the lamellae observed in the THF coated films. The scaling of the lamellar $L_0$ with respect to film thickness follows predictions for confined semiflexible polymers with weak excluded volume interactions and can be related to models for confinement of DNA. Spin coated films shows the same reduction in periodicity, although at very different film thicknesses. This result suggests that the material has shallow free-energy barriers to transitioning between different $L_0$ and morphologies, a property that could be taken advantage of for patterning diverse structures with a single material.

Confined Crystal Melting in Edgeless Poly( L -lactic acid) Crystalsomes

Polymer single crystals tend to be quasi two-dimensional (2D) lamellae and their small lateral surfaces are the starting points of lamella melting and thickening. However, the recently discovered crystalsomes, which are defined for hollow single crystal-like spherical shells, are edgeless, self-confined, and incommensurate with translational symmetry. Here, this work concerns the structure and melting behavior of these edgeless crystalsomes. Poly(l-lactic acid) crystalsomes were grown using a miniemulsion solution crystallization method. Differential scanning calorimetry and in situ wide-angle X-ray diffraction were used to follow the structural evolution of the crystalsomes upon heating. Our results demonstrated that the structure and melting behavior of crystalsomes are curvature-dependent and significantly different from their flat crystal counterpart.
