Tradeoff between Intermolecular Interaction and Backbone Disorder by High Molecular Dipole Block for Improving Blend Morphology of Polymer Solar Cells

Constructing terpolymer has attracted increasing attention as a strategy to improve the performance of polymer solar cell. Terpolymer usually offers an opportunity to lower the frontier molecular orbital energy level, introduces additional absorption band and sometimes optimizes the morphology of the active blend. Generally, the additional segment in terpolymer backbone inevitably introduces backbone disorder, which causes entropy rises. However, selecting a suitable dipole unit introduces extra driving forces for crystallization by enhancing intermolecular interactions. This provides a handy knob for tradeoff between intermolecular interaction and backbone disorder, thus regulating the blend morphology. In this study, a high dipole and electron-deficient group of pyrrolo[3,4-f ]benzotriazole-5,7(6H)-dione (TzBI) is incorporated into the high-performance donor polymer and a series of terpolymers with different content of TzBI are designed. As expected, the morphology is optimized gradually for improving charge generation and charge transport, also suppressing charge recombination. The champion device with 10% TzBI exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.36%, which is 5% increase compared to the controlled device. This study presents a charming terpolymer strategy by highly electron-deficient and high dipole segment to realize a tradeoff between intermolecular interaction and backbone disorder, facilitating the optimization of morphology and elevation of fill factor and device efficiency.

Rapid Access to Diverse Multicomponent Hierarchical Nanostructures from Mixed–Graft Block Copolymers

Multicomponent nanostructured materials assembled from molecular building blocks received wide attention due to their precisely integrated multifunctionalities. However, discovery of these materials with desirable composition and morphology was limited by their low synthetic scalability and narrow structural tuning window with given building blocks. Here, we report a scalable and diversity-oriented synthetic approach to hierarchically structured nanomaterials based on a few readily accessible building blocks. Mixed-graft block copolymers containing sequence-defined side chains were prepared through ring-opening metathesis copolymerization of three or four types of macromonomers. Intramolecularly defined interfaces promoted the formation of ordered hierarchical structures with lattice sizes tunable across multiple length scales. Finally, the same set of macromonomers were arranged and combined in different ways, providing access to diverse morphologies in the resultant structures.

Improving the performance of PM6 donor polymer by random ternary copolymerization of BDD and DTBT segments

Developing high-performance wide bandgap polymer donors to match the rapidly growing non-fullerene small molecule acceptors (NF-SMAs) is of great importance to further improve the photovoltaic performances of organic solar cells (OSCs). PM6 and D18 are two leading wide bandgap donor polymers, but their performances are highly sensitive to the molecular weights, which have distinct impact on the morphology and thereby the charge generation and recombination processes. Here, in this work, we reported the random ternary copolymerization of PM6 and D18 segments to develop random terpolymers with finely tuned photoelectronic properties and optimized blend morphology for high-performance OSCs. The resulting random terpolymers (PMD-5, PMD-10, PMD-15 and PMD-20) exhibited finely tuned absorptions, energy levels and blend morphology. The optimal morphology of PMD-15:L8-BO contributed to the fast exciton diffusion and dissociation, efficient charge extraction with suppressed recombination. Thus, the power conversion efficiency was improved from 17.22% of the control PM6 devices and 17.47% of the control D18 devices to 18.12% of PMD-15 based devices, which is the top performance of random terpolymers. Moreover, the PMD-15 exhibited much higher batch-to-batch reproducibility at a broad molecular weight range than that of PM6 and D18, showing promising for practical applications.

Learning Optimal Multigrid Smoothers via Neural Networks

Multigrid methods are one of the most efficient techniques for solving large sparse linear systems arising from partial differential equations (PDEs) and graph Laplacians from machine learning applications. One of the key components of multigrid is smoothing, which aims at reducing high-frequency errors on each grid level. However, finding optimal smoothing algorithms is problem-dependent and can impose challenges for many problems. In this paper, we propose an efficient adaptive framework for learning optimized smoothers from operator stencils in the form of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Here, the CNNs are trained on small-scale problems from a given type of PDEs based on a supervised loss function derived from multigrid convergence theories and can be applied to large-scale problems of the same class of PDEs. Numerical results on anisotropic rotated Laplacian problems and variable coefficient diffusion problems demonstrate improved convergence rates and solution time compared with classical hand-crafted relaxation methods.

Multiscale Crystalline Structure of Confined Polypeptoid Films: The Effect of Alkyl Side Chain Branching

Here we report the effect of alkyl side chain branching on melt-recrystallization of nanoconfined polypeptoid films using poly(N-octyl glycine) (PNOG) and poly(N-2-ethyl-1-hexyl glycine) (PNEHG) as model systems. Upon cooling from the isotropic melt, confined PNOG molecules recrystallize into a near-perfect orthorhombic crystal structure with the board-like molecules stacked face-to-face in the substrate-parallel direction, resulting in long-range ordered wormlike lamellae that occupy the entire film. By contrast, rod-like PNEHG molecules bearing branched N-2-ethyl-1-hexyl side chains stack into a columnar hexagonal mesophase with their backbones oriented parallel to the substrates, forming micron-sized sheaf-like superstructures under confinement, exposing large areas of empty spaces in the film. These findings highlight the effect of alkyl side chain branching on the packing motif and multiscale crystalline structure of polypeptoids under a nanoconfined geometry.

Smectic C Self‐Assembly in Mesogen‐Free Liquid Crystalline Chiral Polyethers with Sulfonylated Methyl‐Branched Side Chains

Abstract To realize advanced electrical applications for ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers, high spontaneous polarization ( P s ) is highly desired. However, current ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers usually exhibit a low P s . In this work, mesogen‐free, chiral polyethers containing sulfonylated methyl‐branched alkyl side chains with a (CH 2 ) 3 O spacer between the sulfonyl and the branched alkyl groups are designed and synthesized. In contrast to the linear n ‐alkyl side chains, the methyl‐branched alkyl side chains induce chain tilting in the smectic layers. When double chirality exists in both the main chain and the side chains, a crystalline structure is observed after mechanical stretching. Intriguingly, when single chirality exists in either the backbone or the side chains, a liquid crystalline smectic C phase is obtained. The electric displacement–electric field study, however, does not show typical ferroelectric switching, although the dielectric constants are relatively high for these liquid crystalline polymers. This is likely because the dipole–dipole interactions among neighboring sulfonyl groups along the main chain are so strong that the ferroelectric switching is hindered in the samples. For the future work, it is desired to weaken the dipole–dipole interaction to achieve ferroelectricity in these mesogen‐free liquid crystalline polymers.

All‐Printed Ultrahigh‐Responsivity MoS 2 Nanosheet Photodetectors Enabled by Megasonic Exfoliation

Abstract Printed 2D materials, derived from solution‐processed inks, offer scalable and cost‐effective routes to mechanically flexible optoelectronics. With micrometer‐scale control and broad processing latitude, aerosol‐jet printing (AJP) is of particular interest for all‐printed circuits and systems. Here, AJP is utilized to achieve ultrahigh‐responsivity photodetectors consisting of well‐aligned, percolating networks of semiconducting MoS 2 nanosheets and graphene electrodes on flexible polyimide substrates. Ultrathin (≈1.2 nm thick) and high‐aspect‐ratio (≈1 μm lateral size) MoS 2 nanosheets are obtained by electrochemical intercalation followed by megasonic atomization during AJP, which not only aerosolizes the inks but also further exfoliates the nanosheets. The incorporation of the high‐boiling‐point solvent terpineol into the MoS 2 ink is critical for achieving a highly aligned and flat thin‐film morphology following AJP as confirmed by grazing‐incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering and atomic force microscopy. Following AJP, curing is achieved with photonic annealing, which yields quasi‐ohmic contacts and photoactive channels with responsivities exceeding 10 3 A W −1 that outperform previously reported all‐printed visible‐light photodetectors by over three orders of magnitude. Megasonic exfoliation coupled with properly designed AJP ink formulations enables the superlative optoelectronic properties of ultrathin MoS 2 nanosheets to be preserved and exploited for the scalable additive manufacturing of mechanically flexible optoelectronics.

Structural Diversity in Dimension-Controlled Assemblies of Tetrahedral Gold Nanocrystals

Polyhedron packings have fascinated humans for centuries and continue to inspire scientists of modern disciplines. Despite extensive computer simulations and a handful of experimental investigations, understanding of the phase behaviors of synthetic tetrahedra has remained fragmentary largely due to the lack of tetrahedral building blocks with tunable size and versatile surface chemistry. Here, in this study, we report the remarkable richness of and complexity in dimension-controlled assemblies of gold nanotetrahedra. By tailoring nanocrystal interactions from long-range repulsive to hard-particle-like or to systems with short-ranged directional attractions through control of surface ligands and assembly conditions, nearly a dozen of two-dimensional and three-dimensional superstructures including the cubic diamond and hexagonal diamond polymorphs are selectively assembled. We further demonstrate multiply twinned icosahedral supracrystals by drying aqueous gold nanotetrahedra on a hydrophobic substrate. This study expands the toolbox of the superstructure by design using tetrahedral building blocks and could spur future computational and experimental work on self-assembly and phase behavior of anisotropic colloidal particles with tunable interactions.

Influence of the Nature of Aliphatic Hydrophobic Physical Crosslinks on Water Crystallization in Copolymer Hydrogels

The local environment within a hydrogel influences the properties of water, including the propensity for ice crystallization. Water-swollen amphiphilic copolymers produce tunable nanoscale environments, which are defined by hydrophobic associations, for the water molecules. In this work, the antifreeze properties for equilibrium-swollen amphiphilic copolymers with a common hydrophilic component, hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA), but associated through crystalline (octadecyl acrylate, ODA) or rubbery (ethylhexyl acrylate, EHA) hydrophobic segments, are examined. Differences in the efficacy of the associations can be clearly enunciated from compositional solubility limits for the copolymers in water (<2.6 mol % ODA vs ≤14 mol % EHA), and these differences can be attributed to the strength of the association. The equilibrium-swollen HEA-ODA copolymers are viscoelastic solids, while the swollen HEA-EHA copolymers are viscoelastic liquids. Cooling these swollen copolymers to nearly 200 K induces some crystallization of the water, where the fraction of water frozen depends on the details of the nanostructure. Decreasing the mean free path of water by increasing the ODA composition from 10 to 25 mol % leads to fractionally more unfrozen water (66–87%). The swollen HEA-EHA copolymers only marginally inhibit ice (<13%) except with 45 mol % EHA, where nearly 60% of the water remains amorphous on cooling to 200 K. In general, the addition of the EHA leads to less effective ice inhibition than analogous covalently crosslinked HEA hydrogels (19.9 ± 1.8%). These results illustrate that fluidity of confining surfaces can provide pathways for critical nuclei to form and crystal growth to proceed.

Binary Blend All‐Polymer Solar Cells with a Record Efficiency of 17.41% Enabled by Programmed Fluorination Both on Donor and Acceptor Blocks

Abstract Despite remarkable breakthrough made by virtue of “polymerized small‐molecule acceptor (PSMA)” strategy recently, the limited selection pool of high‐performance polymer acceptors and long‐standing challenge in morphology control impede their further developments. Herein, three PSMAs of PYDT‐2F, PYDT‐3F, and PYDT‐4F are developed by introducing different fluorine atoms on the end groups and/or bithiophene spacers to fine‐tune their optoelectronic properties for high‐performance PSMAs. The PSMAs exhibit narrow bandgap and energy levels that match well with PM6 donor. The fluorination promotes the crystallization of the polymer chain for enhanced electron mobility, which is further improved by following n ‐doping with benzyl viologen additive. Moreover, the miscibility is also improved by introducing more fluorine atoms, which promotes the intermixing with PM6 donor. Among them, PYDT‐3F exhibits well‐balanced high crystallinity and miscibility with PM6 donor; thus, the layer‐by‐layer processed PM6/PYDT‐3F film obtains an optimal nanofibril morphology with submicron length and ≈23 nm width of fibrils, facilitating the charge separation and transport. The resulting PM6/PYDT‐3F devices realizes a record high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.41% and fill factor of 77.01%, higher than the PM6/PYDT‐2F (PCE = 16.25%) and PM6/PYDT‐4F (PCE = 16.77%) devices.

Grazing-Incidence Texture Tomography and Diffuse Reflectivity Tomography of an Organic Semiconductor Device Array

The use of grazing-incidence scattering methods for the characterization of 2D patterned organic thin films is limited due to the elongated 1D footprint of the X-ray beam on the sample. However, this characteristic feature can be turned into an advantage, when combined with tomographic reconstruction. In this pilot study we show, how the use of a chosen texture reflection and a diffuse reflectivity signal can each provide 2D images of the deposits, simultaneously revealing the organic film's crystal orientation and the location of the metal electrodes in a field-effect transistor structure from a single sequence of diffraction images.

In Situ Studies of the Swelling by an Electrolyte in Electrochemical Doping of Ethylene Glycol-Substituted Polythiophene

Organic mixed ionic electronic conductors (OMIECs) have the potential to enable diverse new technologies, ranging from biosensors to flexible energy storage devices and neuromorphic computing platforms. However, a study of these materials in their operating state, which convolves both passive and potential-driven solvent, cation, and anion ingress, is extremely difficult, inhibiting rational material design. In this report, we present a novel approach to the in situ studies of the electrochemical switching of a prototypical OMIEC based on oligoethylene glycol (oEG) substitution of semicrystalline regioregular polythiophene via grazing-incidence X-ray scattering. Here by studying the crystal lattice both dry and in contact with the electrolyte while maintaining potential control, we can directly observe the evolution of the crystalline domains and their relationship to film performance in an electrochemically gated transistor. Despite the oEG side-chain enabling bulk electrolyte uptake, we find that the crystalline regions are relatively hydrophobic, exhibiting little (less than one water per thiophene) swelling of the undoped polymer, suggesting that the amorphous regions dominate the reported passive swelling behavior. With applied potential, we observe that the π–π separation in the crystals contracts while the lamella spacing increases in a balanced fashion, resulting in a negligible change in the crystal volume. The potential-induced changes in the crystal structure do not clearly correlate to the electrical performance of the film as an organic electrochemical transistor, suggesting that the transistor performance is strongly influenced by the amorphous regions of the film.

Hard-to-soft transition-enhanced piezoelectricity in poly(vinylidene fluoride) via relaxor-like secondary crystals activated by high-power ultrasonication

We report although high piezoelectric coefficients have recently been observed in poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] random copolymers, they have low Curie temperatures, which makes their piezoelectricity thermally unstable. It has been challenging to achieve high piezoelectric performance from the more thermally stable PVDF homopolymer. In this report, we describe how high-power ultrasonic processing was used to induce a hard-to-soft piezoelectric transition and improve the piezoelectric coefficient d 31 in neat PVDF. After high-power ultrasonication for 20 min, a uniaxially stretched and poled PVDF film exhibited a high d 31 of 50.2 ± 1.7 pm V -1 at room temperature. Upon heating to 65 °C, the d 31 increased to a maximum value of 76.2 ± 1.2 pm V -1 , and the high piezoelectric performance persisted up to 110 °C. The enhanced piezoelectricity was attributed to the relaxor-like secondary crystals in the oriented amorphous fraction, broken off from the primary crystals by ultrasonication, as suggested by differential scanning calorimetry and broadband dielectric spectroscopy studies.

Formation of a Secondary Phase in Thermally Evaporated MAPbI 3 and Its Effects on Solar Cell Performance

Thermal evaporation is a promising deposition technique to scale up perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to large areas, but the lack of understanding of the mechanisms that lead to high-quality evaporated methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI 3 ) films gives rise to devices with efficiencies lower than those obtained by spin coating. Here this work investigates the crystalline properties of MAPbI 3 deposited by the thermal coevaporation of PbI 2 and MAI, where the MAI evaporation rate is controlled by setting different temperatures for the MAI source and the PbI 2 deposition rate is controlled with a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Using grazing incident wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), we identify the formation of a secondary orthorhombic phase (with a Pnma space group) that appears at MAI source temperatures below 155 °C. With synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence (XRF) microscopy, we show that the changes in crystalline phases are not necessarily due to changes in stoichiometry. The films show a stochiometric composition when the MAI source is heated between 140 to 155 °C, and the samples become slightly MAI rich at 165 °C. Increasing the MAI temperature beyond 165 °C introduces an excess of MAI in the film, which promotes the formation of films with low crystallinity that contain low-dimensional perovskites. When they are incorporated in solar cells, the films deposited at 165 °C result in the champion power conversion efficiency, although the presence of a small amount of low-dimensional perovskite may lead to a lower open-circuit voltage. We hypothesize that the formation of secondary phases in evaporated films limits the performance of PSCs and that their formation can be suppressed by controlling the MAI source temperature, bringing the film toward a phase-pure tetragonal structure. Control of the phases during perovskite evaporation is therefore crucial to obtain high-performance solar cells.

Multiple ferroelectric nematic phases of a highly polar liquid crystal compound

Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals represent not only fascinating, fundamental science, but they also hold promise for new technologies including high-density power storage or sub-millisecond switching information displays. In this work, we describe the synthesis and measurements of the physical properties of a new compound, 4-nitrophenyl 4-[(2,4-dimethoxylbenzoyl)oxy]-2-fluorobenzoate (RT11001). This material exhibits multiple, highly polar, ferroelectric nematic phases that have not been previously reported. Here we employ a wide range of physical characterisation methods including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mass density measurement, optical birefringence, polarising optical microscopy (POM), dielectric spectroscopy, electric current analysis, electro-optical switching, small-angle and wide-angle x-ray scattering measurements to show that RT11001 has multiple, distinct ferroelectric phases. We argue that the highest temperature phase is a polar nematic fluid with non-polar smectic clusters. Directly below appears to be a transition to another polar nematic phase containing polar positionally ordered clusters. Lastly, there are indications of an additional, polar biaxial liquid crystal phase at lower temperatures.
