Pneumatic inflatable end effector

The invention relates to an end effector device for robot or teleoperated type space vehicle which includes an inflatable balloon member carried on the end of tubular member which has a hollow center or conduit through which a suitable pressurized fluid is supplied. The device may be inserted into a variety of shaped openings or truss-type structures for handling in space.

Mechanical hand for gripping objects

End effector serves as "hand" for remote manipulator spacecraft system to grasp objects of various sizes. Device has built in flexible wrist joint "cartilage" for increased gripping force without significant strain on mechanical connections.

Triple-axis common-pivot arm wrist device for manipulative applications

A concept in manipulator development to overcome the 'weak wrist syndrome', a triple-axis common-pivot arm wrist (TACPAW), is presented. It contains torque motors for actuation, tachometers for measuring rate, and resolvers for position measurements. Furthermore, it provides three degrees of freedom, i.e., pitch, yaw, and roll, in a single manipulator joint. The advantages of this development are increased strength, compactness, and simplification of controls. Designed to be compatible with the protoflight manipulator arm, the joints of TACPAW are back-driveable with + or - 45 deg rotation in pitch, + or - 45 deg in yaw and continuous roll in either direction while delivering 20.5 N-m (15 ft-lb) torque in each of the three movements.

Apparatus for assembling space structure

An apparatus for producing a structure in outer space from rolls of prepunched ribbon or sheet material that are transported from the earth to the apparatus located in outer space is described. The apparatus spins the space structure similar to a spider spinning a web utilizing the prepunched ribbon material. The prepunched ribbon material is fed through the apparatus and is shaped into a predetermined channel-shaped configuration. Trusses are punched out of the ribbon and are bent downwardly and attached to a track which normally is a previously laid sheet of material. The size of the overall space structure may be increased by merely attaching an additional roll of sheet material to the apparatus.

Space Spider - A concept for fabrication of large structures

The Space Spider concept for the automated fabrication of large space structures involves a specialized machine which roll-forms thin gauge material such as aluminum and develops continuous spiral structures with radial struts to sizes of 600-1,000 feet in diameter by 15 feet deep. This concept allows the machine and raw material to be integrated using the Orbiter capabilities, then boosting the rigid system to geosynchronous equatorial orbit (GEO) without high sensitivity to acceleration forces. As a teleoperator controlled device having repetitive operations, the fabrication process can be monitored and verified from a ground-based station without astronaut involvement in GEO. The resultant structure will be useful as an intermediate size platform or as a structural element to be used with other elements such as the space-fabricated beams or composite nested tubes.

Compact reliable multiaxis pivot

Triple-axis pivot-arm wrist developed for wrist joint for remote-manipulator arm allows three degrees of freedom in wrist joint. Device also contains power-chain components sufficient for 15 foot/pound torque. Device could be used with prosthetics.

Combined docking and grasping device

A combined docking and grasping device for use with a manipulator arm on a docking vehicle and the like for mechanically connecting a docking vehicle with an orbital payload having a receptacle for receiving the device is described. The device includes a pair of opposing jaw members having opposing serrated surfaces for grasping an object and a triangular cam portion on an outer surface for insertion and interlocking with an orbital payload.

Sound absorption of low-temperature reusable surface insulation candidate materials

Sound absorption data from tests of four candidate low-temperature reusable surface insulation materials are presented. Limitations on the use of the data are discussed, conclusions concerning the effective absorption of the materials are drawn, and the relative significance to Vibration and Acoustic Test Facility test planning of the absorption of each material is assessed.
