All-Perovskite Tandem Photoelectrodes for Unassisted Solar Hydrogen Production

Unassisted solar water splitting by multi-junction tandem photoelectrodes is a sustainable approach to generating green hydrogen fuels. Here, we report on the fabrication of monolithically integrated all-perovskite tandem photocathodes for efficient unassisted solar water splitting. All-perovskite tandem photocathodes wired to an iridium oxide anode deliver a high photovoltage of more than 2 V with an operating photocurrent density of 12.5 mA cm -2 at zero applied bias under simulated AM1.5G one sun illumination, yielding a solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of 15%. The tandem photoelectrode demonstrates continuous operation for more than 120 hours in water under simulated one-sun illumination with less than 5% efficiency loss. A technoeconomic analysis shows the projected production cost of all-perovskite tandem photoelectrodes is $\$30$ m -2 , promising a levelized cost of hydrogen of less than $\$1$/kg if sufficient device longevity is realized. Finally, this work provides a path toward achieving cost-effective unassisted solar hydrogen fuel production.

Implications of Electron Transport Layer and Back Metal Contact Variations in Tin–Lead Perovskite Solar Cells Assessed by Spectroscopic Ellipsometry and External Quantum Efficiency

The structural and optical properties of hybrid organic–inorganic metal halide perovskite solar cells are measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry to reveal an optically distinct interfacial layer among the back contact metal, charge transport, and absorber layers. Understanding how this interfacial layer impacts performance is essential for developing higher performing solar cells. Here, this interfacial layer is modeled by Bruggeman effective medium approximations (EMAs) to contain perovskite, C 60 , BCP, and metal. External quantum efficiency (EQE) simulations that consider scattering, electronic losses, and the formation of nonparallel interfaces are created with input derived from ellipsometry structural-optical models and compared with experimental EQE to estimate optical losses. This nonplanar interface causes optical losses in short circuit current density (JSC) of up to 1.2 mA cm –2 . A study of glass/C 60 /SnO 2 /Ag or Cu and glass/C 60 /BCP/Ag film stacks shows that C 60 and BCP mix, but replacing BCP with SnO 2 can prevent mixing between the ETLs to prevent contact between C 60 and back contact metal and enable the formation of a planar interface between ETLs and back contact metals.

Machine learning unifies flexibility and efficiency of spinodal structure generation for stochastic biomaterial design

Abstract Porous biomaterials design for bone repair is still largely limited to regular structures (e.g. rod-based lattices), due to their easy parameterization and high controllability. The capability of designing stochastic structure can redefine the boundary of our explorable structure–property space for synthesizing next-generation biomaterials. We hereby propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) approach for efficient generation and design of spinodal structure—an intriguing structure with stochastic yet interconnected, smooth, and constant pore channel conducive to bio-transport. Our CNN-based approach simultaneously possesses the tremendous flexibility of physics-based model in generating various spinodal structures (e.g. periodic, anisotropic, gradient, and arbitrarily large ones) and comparable computational efficiency to mathematical approximation model. We thus successfully design spinodal bone structures with target anisotropic elasticity via high-throughput screening, and directly generate large spinodal orthopedic implants with desired gradient porosity. This work significantly advances stochastic biomaterials development by offering an optimal solution to spinodal structure generation and design.

Antiferromagnetic topological insulating state in $\mathrm{Tb_{0.02}Bi_{1.08}Sb_{0.9}Te_2S}$ single crystals

Topological insulators are emerging materials with insulating bulk and symmetry protected nontrivial surface states. One of the most fascinating transport behaviors in a topological insulator is the quantized anomalous Hall insulator, which has been observed in magnetic-topological-insulator-based devices. Here in this work, we report a successful doping of rare earth element Tb into Bi 1.08 Sb 0.9 Te 2 S topological insulator single crystals, in which the Tb moments are antiferromagnetically ordered below ~10 K. Benefiting from the in-bulk-gap Fermi level, transport behavior dominant by the topological surface states is observed below ~150 K. At low temperatures, strong Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations are observed, which exhibit 2D-like behavior. The topological insulator with long range magnetic ordering in rare earth doped Bi 1.08 Sb 0.9 Te 2 S single crystal provides an ideal platform for quantum transport studies and potential applications.

Rational design of Lewis base molecules for stable and efficient inverted perovskite solar cells

Lewis base molecules that bind undercoordinated lead atoms at interfaces and grain boundaries (GBs) are known to enhance the durability of metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Using density functional theory calculations, we found that phosphine-containing molecules have the strongest binding energy among members of a library of Lewis base molecules studied herein. Experimentally, we found that the best inverted PSC treated with 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (DPPP), a diphosphine Lewis base that passivates, binds, and bridges interfaces and GBs, retained a power conversion efficiency (PCE) slightly higher than its initial PCE of ~23% after continuous operation under simulated AM1.5 illumination at the maximum power point and at ~40°C for >3500 hours. DPPP-treated devices showed a similar increase in PCE after being kept under open-circuit conditions at 85°C for >1500 hours.

Regulating surface potential maximizes voltage in all-perovskite tandems

The open circuit voltage (V OC ) deficit in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is greater in wide bandgap (>1.7 eV) cells than in ~1.5 eV perovskites. Quasi-Fermi level splitting (QFLS) measurements reveal V OC -limiting recombination at the electron transport layer (ETL) contact. This, we find, stems from inhomogeneous surface potential and poor perovskite-ETL energetic alignment. Common monoammonium surface treatments fail to address this; instead we introduce diammonium molecules to modify the perovskite surface states and achieve a more uniform spatial distribution of surface potential. Using 1,3-propane diammonium (PDA), QFLS increases by 90 meV, enabling 1.79 eV PSCs with a certified 1.33 V V OC , and > 19% power conversion efficiency (PCE). Incorporating this layer into a monolithic all-perovskite tandem, we report a record V OC of 2.19 V (89% of the Detailed Balance V OC limit) and > 27% PCE (26.3% certified quasi-steady-state). Furthermore, these tandems retain more than 86% of their initial PCE after 500 hrs operation.

Scalable Two–Step Production of High–Efficiency Perovskite Solar Cells and Modules

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) fabricated in laboratories have already achieved power conversion efficiency (PCE) comparable to market-dominant crystalline silicon solar cells. However, this promising photovoltaic technology suffers from severe loss of PCE during scaling up, limiting its progress toward commercialization. One critical question is to develop scalable, low-cost, high throughput, and well-controlled production methods to deposit high-quality perovskite films. Among various approaches, two-step sequential deposition methods have their unique advantages but have been long overlooked. This review provides an overview of two-step methods for fabricating efficient and stable perovskite solar modules (PSMs). We first discuss the mechanisms of two-step perovskite conversion and advanced engineering approaches to modulate the perovskite formation process. We survey the progress of efficient PSCs prepared by different two-step methods and compare the advantages and disadvantages of each method for scalable production of PSMs. Particularly, we highlight that the vapor-based two-step methods are promising for high-throughput in-line production of PSMs. Finally, we provide insights into the challenges and outlook of the industrialization of two-step processes for producing PSMs.

Anticorrosive epoxy coatings from direct epoxidation of bioethanol fractionated lignin

The development of lignin-based anticorrosive epoxy coatings for steel protection is beneficial for both alleviating the fossil resource depletion and value-added utilization of lignin but remains a challenge due to the inherent heterogeneous structure of lignin. Here, in this study, we selectively extract the low molecular weight (MW) fraction of a crop residue-derived enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) through a bioethanol fractionation process and prepare epoxy resin by direct epoxidation of the bioethanol fractionated lignin (BFL). The coatings are then fabricated using 20–100 wt% of BFL-based epoxy resin (LEp) as the commercial epoxy resin substitute. The low MW and high p-hydroxyphenyl content of the BFL offer high solubility and good workability for BFL and LEp during epoxidation and coating production, respectively. Lignin-based coatings with 20–40 wt% LEp exhibit good adhesion property (5B) and superior corrosion resistance, compared to the commercial epoxy coating. Although coating with high LEp concentrations (i.e., 60–100 wt%) resulted in decreased adhesion strength, the coating with 100 wt% LEp still displayed corrosion protection performance comparable to that of the commercial epoxy coating. Overall, this study provides a simple and effective approach to converting lignin to epoxy resins for a wide variety of surface coating applications.

Ionic Conductive and Highly-Stable Interface for Alkali Metal Anodes

Alkali metals are regarded as the most promising candidates for advanced anode for the next-generation batteries due to their high specific capacity, low electrochemical potential, and lightweight. However, critical problems of the alkali metal anodes, especially dendrite formation and interface stabilization, remain challenging to overcome. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a key factor affecting Li and Na deposition behavior and electrochemical performances. Herein, a facile and universal approach is successfully developed to fabricate ionic conductive interfaces for Li and Na metal anodes by modified atomic layer deposition (ALD). In this process, the Li metal (or Na metal) plays the role of Li (or Na) source without any additional Li (or Na) precursor during ALD. Moreover, the key questions about the influence of ALD deposition temperature on the compositions and structure of the coatings are addressed. The optimized ionic conductive coatings have significantly improved the electrochemical performances. In addition, the electrochemical phase-field model is performed to prove that the ionic conductive coating is very effective in promoting uniform electrodeposition. Further, this approach is universal and can be potentially applied to other different metal anodes. At the same time, it can be extended to other types of coatings or other deposition techniques.

Advantages of tandem versus simultaneous operation: The case of isomerization/hydrogenation of terpinolene epoxide to Terpinen-4-ol using a Ni/TiO 2 -SiO 2 bifunctional catalyst

The conversion of terpinolene epoxide to terpinen-4-ol is a desirable chemical transformation for the production of a valuable intermediate. Here this report describes a one-pot, two-step system for the reaction that uses a bifunctional Ni/TiO 2 -SiO 2 catalyst with isomerization and hydrogenation capabilities. The TiO 2 -SiO 2 serves to isomerize the starting epoxide. The Ni component works to hydrogenate the allylic double bond. The tandem system achieves a high 64% yield of terpinen-4-ol. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that TiO 2 -SiO 2 was a mixed binary oxide, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine suggested that acid sites were mainly Lewis acid sites. Electron microscopy showed that the Ni/TiO 2 -SiO 2 catalyst consisted of spherical particles comprising a titanosilicate phase with highly dispersed zero-valent Ni or anatase on the surface. Additionally, there was strong interaction between Ni and the TiO 2 -SiO 2 mixed oxides. Control kinetic experiments demonstrated that the tandem use of the catalysts was more effective than simultaneous operation.

North China Plain as a hot spot of ozone pollution exacerbated by extreme high temperatures

Abstract. A large population in China has been exposed to both severe ozone (O3) pollution and extreme heat under global warming. Here, the spatiotemporal characteristics of coupled extremes in surface O3 and heat (OPCs) over China are investigated using surface observations, a process-based chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem), and multi-model simulations from Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). North China Plain (NCP; 37–41∘ N; 114–120∘ E) is identified as a hot spot of OPCs, where more than half of the O3 pollution days are accompanied by high temperature extremes. OPCs over NCP exceeded 40 d during 2014–2019, exhibiting an increasing trend. Both O3 concentrations and temperatures are elevated during OPCs compared with O3 pollution days occurring individually (OPIs). Therefore, OPCs impose more severe health impacts to humans than OPIs, but the stronger health effects are mainly driven by the higher temperatures. GEOS-Chem simulations further reveal that enhanced chemical production resulting from hot and stable atmospheric conditions under anomalous weather patterns primarily contributes to the exacerbated O3 levels during OPCs. In the future, CMIP6 projections suggest increased occurrences of OPCs over NCP in the middle of this century, but by the end of this century, OPCs may decrease or increase depending on the pollutant emission scenarios. However, for all future scenarios, extreme high temperatures will play an increasingly important role in modulating O3 pollution in a warming climate.

Abrupt emissions reductions during COVID-19 contributed to record summer rainfall in China

Record rainfall and severe flooding struck eastern China in the summer of 2020. The extreme summer rainfall occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, which started in China in early 2020 and spread rapidly across the globe. By disrupting human activities, substantial reductions in anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases and aerosols might have affected regional precipitation in many ways. Here, we investigate such connections and show that the abrupt emissions reductions during the pandemic strengthened the summer atmospheric convection over eastern China, resulting in a positive sea level pressure anomaly over northwestern Pacific Ocean. The latter enhanced moisture convergence to eastern China and further intensified rainfall in that region. Modeling experiments show that the reduction in aerosols had a stronger impact on precipitation than the decrease of greenhouse gases did. We conclude that through abrupt emissions reductions, the COVID-19 pandemic contributed importantly to the 2020 extreme summer rainfall in eastern China.
