Neutrino Theory in the Precision Era

This document summarises discussions on future directions in theoretical neutrino physics, which are the outcome of a neutrino theory workshop held at CERN in February 2025. The starting point is the realisation that neutrino physics offers unique opportunities to address some of the most fundamental questions in physics. This motivates a vigorous experimental programme which the theory community fully supports. \textbf{A strong effort in theoretical neutrino physics is paramount to optimally take advantage of upcoming neutrino experiments and to explore the synergies with other areas of particle, astroparticle, and nuclear physics, as well as cosmology.} Progress on the theory side has the potential to significantly boost the physics reach of experiments, as well as go well beyond their original scope. Strong collaboration between theory and experiment is essential in the precision era. To foster such collaboration, \textbf{we propose to establish a CERN Neutrino Physics Centre.} Taking inspiration from the highly successful LHC Physics Center at Fermilab, the CERN Neutrino Physics Centre would be the European hub of the neutrino community, covering experimental and theoretical activities.

Physics of parameter correlations around the solar-scale enhancement in neutrino theory with unitarity violation

We discuss the physics of the three neutrino flavor transformation with non-unitary mixing matrix, with particular attention to the correlation between the $\nu$SM- and the $\alpha$ parameters which represent the effect of unitarity-violating (UV) new physics. Towards this goal, a new perturbative framework is created to illuminate the effect of non-unitarity in the region of the solar-scale enhanced oscillations. We refute the skepticism about the physical reality of the $\nu$Standard Model CP phase $\delta$–$\alpha$ parameter phase correlation by analysis with the SOL convention of $U_{{\tiny MNS}}$, in which $e^{\pm i \delta}$ is attached to $s_{12}$. Then, a comparative study between the solar- and atmospheric-scale oscillation regions allowed by the framework reveals a dynamical $\delta$–(blobs of the $\alpha$ parameters) correlation in the solar oscillation region, in sharp contrast to the “chiral”-type phase correlation $[e^{- i \delta} \bar{\alpha}_{\mu e},\ e^{- i \delta} \bar{\alpha}_{\tau e},\ \bar{\alpha}_{\tau \mu}]$ in the Particle Data Group convention seen in the atmospheric oscillation region. An explicit perturbative calculation to the first order in the $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{e}$ channel allows us to decompose the UV related part of the probability into the unitary evolution part and the genuine non-unitary part. We observe that the effect of non-unitarity tends to cancel between these two parts, as well as between the different $\alpha_{\beta \gamma}$ parameters.

New Theories for Neutrino Masses and Dark Matter

The main goal of the project is to investigate new theories for neutrino masses and dark matter, and understand their testability in different experiments. The PI proposed several mechanisms for neutrino masses in the context of B-L theories, left-right symmetric theories, supersymmetric theories and grand unified theories. The PI would like to investigate new ways to understand the origin of neutrino masses where the seesaw scale is in the multi-TeV region. One can have a multi-TeV seesaw scale in scenarios where the same symmetry relevant for neutrino masses defines the dark matter relic density, or in the minimal supersymmetric theory based on local B-L. In these theories one can have new ways to understand the testability of the origin of neutrino masses at colliders and low energy experiments. In these theories one predicts the possibility to observe lepton number violating signatures at the LHC, one can predict large contributions to lepton number violating processes such as mu to e conversion, neutrinoless double beta decay experiments and others. The nature of the dark matter in the Universe is one of the most important problems in cosmology. Two of the most popular candidates are the Axions and the Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). The PI would like to investigate the implications of a new electroweak theta term similar to the QCD vacuum angle but in the SU(2) gauge sector of the SM which is physical if the baryon and lepton numbers are broken symmetries. We will investigate the implications of having a new electroweak theta term dark matter portal, the implications for baryogenesis and understand the constraints coming from different experiments such as the searches for electric dipole moments and axion experiments. The implications of having the electroweak theta term in theories with different sources of baryon and lepton number violation will be investigated. WIMPs are perhaps the most appealing candidates for many reasons. The PI would like to investigate the properties of WIMPs in different gauge theories, study the implications of the cosmological bounds on the WIMPs relic density for the symmetry breaking scale in models for new physics. The PI would like to investigate in great detail the predictions for gamma lines, neutrino lines and other striking signatures which can be present in these theories. These studies can have a profound impact in the testability of different theories for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Towards AI-assisted neutrino flavor theory design

Particle physics theories, such as those which explain neutrino flavor mixing, arise from a vast landscape of model-building possibilities. A model’s construction typically relies on the intuition of theorists. It also requires considerable effort to identify appropriate symmetry groups, assign field representations, and extract predictions for comparison with experimental data. We develop Autonomous Model Builder (AMBer), a framework in which a reinforcement learning agent interacts with a streamlined physics software pipeline to search these spaces efficiently. AMBer selects symmetry groups, particle content, and group representation assignments to construct models while minimizing the number of free parameters introduced. We validate our approach in well-studied regions of theory space and extend the exploration to a previously unexamined symmetry group. While demonstrated in the context of neutrino flavor theories, this approach of reinforcement learning with physics software feedback may be extended to other theoretical model-building problems in the future.

On the effective theory of neutrino-electron and neutrino-quark interactions

We determine the four Fermi effective theory of neutrino interactions within the Standard Model including one-loop electroweak radiative corrections, in combination with the measured muon lifetime and precision electroweak data. Including two-loop matching and three-loop running corrections, we determine lepton coefficients accounting for all large logarithms through relative order $\cal{O}(\alpha \alpha_s)$ and quark coefficients accounting for all large logarithms through ${\cal{O}}(\alpha)$. We present four-fermion coefficients valid in $n_f=3$ and $n_f=4$ flavor quark theories, as well as in the extreme low-energy limit. We relate the coefficients in this limit to neutrino charge radii governing matter effects via forward neutrino scattering on charged particles.

DarkNews: a Python-based event generator for heavy neutral lepton production in neutrino-nucleus scattering

We introduce DarkNews, a lightweight Python-based Monte-Carlo generator for beyond-the-Standard-Model neutrino-nucleus scattering. The generator handles the production and decay of heavy neutral leptons via additional vector or scalar mediators, as well as through transition magnetic moments. DarkNews samples pre-computed neutrino-nucleus upscattering cross sections and heavy neutrino decay rates to produce dilepton and single-photon events in accelerator neutrino experiments. We present two case studies with differential distributions for models that can explain the MiniBooNE excess. The aim of this code is to aid the neutrino theory and experimental communities in performing searches and sensitivity studies for new particles produced in neutrino upscattering.

Energy Dependent Fission Product Yields (2nd year Milestone and Deliverables)

Introduction to the project: One of the Laboratory missions is to provide consistent, high-precision fission product; yield data critical for testing fission models and maintaining the safety and security of the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile. However, high-quality, energy-differential fission product yield data is missing for certain actinides and neutron energies important to constrain the new U.S. Nuclear Data Program evaluation effort; It has been shown that the reactor antineutrino anomaly may be at least partially caused by roughly 20 fission products. The fission product yield data is missing or incomplete for many of these isotopes, thus it is necessary to accurately determine these values to better constrain the anomaly; Aitor Bracho is measuring very short-lived (seconds to minutes) fission product yields of 235 U and 239 Pu using monoenergetic neutron beams at E n = 60 and 560 keV; Aitor Bracho is using a direct approach utilizing a state-of-the-art rabbit transfer system, superior HPGe detector, and digital acquisition systems for fission decay measurements. The goals of this project: lop experimental capabilities and data analysis techniques to carry out the gamma-ray spectra analysis necessary for fission product yield calculation; Provide high-precision and energy-dependent fission product data supporting fission theory, neutrino physics, and applied physics.

Neutrino Scattering: Connections Across Theory and Experiment

In this document drafted by the Neutrino Scattering Theory Experiment Collaboration (NuSTEC), we provide input on the synergies between theoretical and experimental efforts that can provide critical input to the prediction accuracy needed for the forthcoming high-precision neutrino measurements. These efforts involve a wide range of energies and interaction processes, as well as target nuclei and interaction probes. The challenges discussed will be overcome only through the active support of integrated collaboration across strong and electroweak physics from both the nuclear and high energy physics communities.

Discovering the nature of neutrinos: How nuclear theory will advance this grand endeavor. Final report

Why is there more matter than antimatter in the visible universe? Are neutrinos their own antiparticles? These are some of the most profound questions in science. The detection of a (0vββ) neutrinoless doublebeta decay and the measurement of its half-life is one of the most important experimental endeavors in science because it will answer these questions. Paramount to these measurements are accurate predictions with quantified uncertainties of the 0vββ-decay nuclear transitions, especially for the germanium-76 and xeon-136 nuclei, two candidate materials for building the next generation of DOE funded 0vββ-decay experiments. These predictions will guide the Office of Science’s down selection of experiments as well as aid in determining how much material is needed by these experiments. We studied a specific difficult to assess source of uncertainty that will impact coming microscopic predictions, uncertainty which arises from an incomplete yet systematically improvable model of interactions between nucleons and of nucleons with the other particles involved in decay process, referred to as the theory uncertainty. We employed a surrogate model of the germanium-76 nucleus, and its decay products, just detailed enough to adequately mimic the decaying nucleons need for a reasonable measure of this uncertainty and nothing more, avoiding the immense computational expense required in quantifying uncertainties of the full calculation. We found that microscopic calculations of this process can be expected to achieve relative theory uncertainties around 30%, including an unconstrained contribution that had the potential to spoil microscopic calculations. This results in a nearly order of magnitude on previously estimated uncertainties for this rare decay process.

Chiral effective field theory calculation of neutrino reactions in warm neutron-rich matter

Neutrino scattering and absorption rates of relevance to supernovae and neutron star mergers are obtained from nuclear matter dynamical structure functions that encode many-body effects from nuclear mean fields and correlations. In this study, we employ nuclear interactions from chiral effective field theory to calculate the density, spin, isospin, and spin-isospin response functions of warm β-equilibrium nuclear matter. We include corrections to the single-particle energies in the mean field approximation as well as vertex corrections resummed in the random phase approximation (RPA), including both direct and exchange diagrams. We find that correlations included through the RPA redistribute the strength of the response to higher energy for neutrino absorption and lower energy for antineutrino absorption. This tends to suppress the absorption rate of electron neutrinos across all relevant energy scales. In contrast, the inclusion of RPA correlations enhances the electron antineutrino absorption rate at low energy and suppresses the rate at high energy. These effects are especially important at high-density and in the vicinity of the neutrino decoupling region. Implications for heavy element nucleosynthesis, electromagnetic signatures of compact object mergers, supernova dynamics, and neutrino detection from galactic supernovae are discussed briefly.
