On the magnon interaction in haematite. I - Magnon energy of optical mode.

The effect of magnon interaction on the magnon energies of haematite was studied by the use of a recently developed random phase approximation. In this study, the spin Hamiltonian and the magnon energy were written in a power series of (1/S), where S denotes the magnitude of spin. It is known that the expression of magnon energy is rigorous up to the second term of this series. It is found that the optic mode energy is small if the free optic mode energy is small, which is contrary to Herbert's (1969) conclusion. This direct proportionality between the optic mode energy and the free optic mode energy was not confirmed in the higher order terms of 1/S.

On the magnon interaction in Haematite. 2: Magnon energy of the acoustical mode and magnetic critical fields

Previous spin wave theories of the antiferromagnet hematite were extended. The behavior of thermodynamic quantities around the Morin transition temperature was studied, and the latent heat of the Morin transition was calculated. The temperature dependence of the antiferromagnetic resonance frequency and the parallel and perpendicular critical spin-flop magnetic fields were calculated. It was found that the theory agrees well with experiment.

Raman scattering from phonons and magnons in magnetic semiconductors, MnTe

Comparisons are made between theoretical and experimental data on laser Raman scattering by phonons and two-magnons in antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases of MnTe. The study was performed specifically to characterize the magnetic exchange coupling constants of the Mn ions in the samples. Crystal MnTe samples were bombarded with an Ar ion laser beam to obtain spectrometer and photon counter data. One E(2g) phonon with a room temperature energy of 178/cm and a two-magnon peak of 360/cm were observed in the Raman spectrum. A spin wave dispersion relation is presented for the spectrum. Finally, a Monte Carlo technique was used to calculate the two-magnon joint density of states that best fits the experimental data.

Physicists make a difference in space cryogenics

An evaluation is made of space cryogenics technology development challenges in whose treatment the unique abilities of physicists have been notably valuable. In addition to such broad concerns as the quantum properties of superfluid He, the basic laws of thermodynamics and entropy, and quantization of such fields as those of phonons and magnons, productive efforts have been made by physicists in the basic principles of SQUIDs, magnetic shielding due to the Meissner effect in superconductors, adiabatic demagnetization, and dilution cooling of He-3 and He-4. These contributions will be of fundamental importance to the IR Telescope for Space and Advanced X-ray Astronomical Facility, which are currently under development.

Broadband Characterization of Stress Induced Anisotropy in Nanocomposite Co74.6Fe2.7Mn2.7Nb4Si2B14

We report on the broadband characterization of Co74:6Fe2:7Mn2:7Nb4Si2B14 (at%) melt-spun, soft magnetic alloy ribbons after various secondary processing treatments. Ribbons were investigated in the as-cast (melt-spun) condition, after annealing under stress at 50 - 200 MPa, and after transverse magnetic field (TMF) annealing. The magnetization dynamics of these materials have been studied from 10 - 60 GHz using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). The in-plane uniaxial anisotropy was determined from the FMR data and permeability extracted for each condition. The permeability determined from broadband FMR was in good agreement with independently determined values using vibrating sample magnetometry and impedance spectrometry of toroidal cores. The effective damping parameter (α (sub ϱff)) of all the samples was close to 0.015 except for the TMF sample, which showed higher damping, possibly due to two magnon scattering.
