PV Durability at Scale: Assessing Bifacial and TOPCon Field Performance

Recent field performance results of TOPCon and PERC Bifacial modules are presented based on small-scale deployments at NLR, and a selection of 3rd-party residential data. Bifacial PERC degradation rates are a median of -1 % / yr with bifacial TOPCon modules at a similar rate of -1.1 %/yr over the first couple of years. Comparable PERC Monofacial modules have a degradation rate of -0.5%/yr. Some TOPCon modules exhibited an indoor dark metastability effect which requires recovery by light soaking or UV exposure prior to IV curve measurement. Further monitoring is needed to confirm the long-term stability of TOPCon modules.

Predicting photothermal field performance

Photothermal field performance in flat plate solar collectors was predicted. An analytical model which incorporates the measured dependency between transmittance loss and UV and temperature exposure levels was developed. The model uses SOLMET weather data extrapolated to 30 years for various sites and module mounting configurations. It is concluded that the temperature is the key to photothermally induced transmittance loss. The sensitivity of transmittance loss to UV level is nonlinear with minimum in curve near one sun. The ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) results are consistent with 30 year life allocation.

Advancing Building Performance: Field Results of Thin-Glass Triple-Pane Window Demonstrations

To meet California and the nation's ambitious energy targets, energy use in the building sector must drop dramatically. Windows continue to be the lowest thermally performing envelope system in the nation's buildings, resulting in poor overall envelope performance and potential impacts to human health and comfort. Current best practice new window performance is typically met by double-pane low-solar-gain glazing. Thin-glass triple-pane windows are a highly promising next step forward in performance and have been deployed in two California multi-family sites to quantify field performance and building energy savings. The technology assessed offers the performance benefits of traditional triple-pane but with little increase in weight or cost, enabling incremental costs competitive with alternative energy reduction solutions for the building envelope. This paper covers a detailed investigation into the demonstration project and measured performance benefits of the windows after a full year of data collection.

In-Field Performance of Biomass Balers

Herbaceous biomass will contribute significantly to meeting renewable energy goals. Harvesting equipment for hay is generally suitable for mowing, raking, and baling grasses such as switchgrass; however, there is a need for field data to better understand machine performance in energy crops. The purpose of this study was to collect field data to estimate baler field capacity, throughput, and speed. Data gathered with a Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) unit during baling provided time-motion studies of baler productivity. Six fields were used to compare field capacity, speed, and throughput results from four round balers and one large-square baler. The results show that in-field performance of round balers is significantly affected by yield, but that the relationship can be represented with machinery management concepts, knowledge of maximum throughput, and wrap-eject time. Baler performance will be overestimated if the yield, maximum throughput, and wrap-eject time are not correctly accounted for.

Evaluation of initial collector field performance at the Langley Solar Building Test Facility

The thermal performance of the solar collector field for the NASA Langley Solar Building Test Facility is given for October 1976 through January 1977. A 1,180 square meter solar collector field with seven collector designs helped to provide hot water for the building heating system and absorption air conditioner. The collectors were arranged in 12 rows with nominally 51 collectors per row. Heat transfer rates for each row were calculated and recorded along with sensor, insolation, and weather data every five minutes using a minicomputer. The agreement between the experimental and predicted collector efficiencies was generally within five percentage points.

Field Performance of R-1234yf Heat Pump Water Heaters

Heat pump water heaters (HPWH) provide a resource for increasing water heating efficiency in U.S. residences. Electric HPWHs have traditionally utilized R-134a as the refrigerant in the vapor-compression cycle; however, this refrigerant is undesirable long-term due to its high global warming potential. For HPWHs, low global warming potential refrigerants such as R-1234yf may offer comparable performance, but the evaluation of these systems has been limited to laboratory settings. This study provides field evaluations of off-the-shelf HPWHs that had their factory R-134a refrigerant replaced with an optimized charge of R-1234yf. The field evaluation consisted of R-1234yf HPWHs at two occupied field sites and two unoccupied, simulated lab homes. At the two residential field sites with occupants, the R-1234yf HPWHs operated issue-free for the 18-month field trial, and the home occupants perceived no change in HPWH performance relative to their prior R-134a HPWHs. At the lab homes, under simulated hot water draws, the average daily operating efficiency of the R-1234yf HPWH was within 2% of the baseline R-134a HPWHs.

Field performance of switchgrass plants engineered for reduced recalcitrance

Switchgrass ( Panicum virgatum L.) is a promising perennial bioenergy crop that achieves high yields with relatively low nutrient and energy inputs. Modification of cell wall composition for reduced recalcitrance can lower the costs of deconstructing biomass to fermentable sugars and other intermediates. We have engineered overexpression of OsAT10 , encoding a rice BAHD acyltransferase and QsuB , encoding dehydroshikimate dehydratase from Corynebacterium glutamicum , to enhance saccharification efficiency in switchgrass. These engineering strategies demonstrated low lignin content, low ferulic acid esters, and increased saccharification yield during greenhouse studies in switchgrass and other plant species. In this work, transgenic switchgrass plants overexpressing either OsAT10 or QsuB were tested in the field in Davis, California, USA for three growing seasons. No significant differences in the content of lignin and cell wall-bound p -coumaric acid or ferulic acid were detected in transgenic OsAT10 lines compared with the untransformed Alamo control variety. However, the transgenic overexpressing QsuB lines had increased biomass yield and slightly increased biomass saccharification properties compared to the control plants. This work demonstrates good performance of engineered plants in the field, and also shows that the cell wall changes in the greenhouse were not replicated in the field, emphasizing the need to validate engineered plants under relevant field conditions.

Field Performance of Commercial Building Load Flexibility Using Model Predictive Control

Model Predictive Control (MPC) applied to buildings is starting to see some commercial adoption by companies. However, it is hard to estimate if relative energy cost savings are enough to justify the cost of MPC implementation with few reported demonstrations. In small commercial and residential buildings, a one size-fits-all solution can help reduce implementation costs, while in very large buildings or districts the potential energy cost savings magnitude can cover more tailored solutions. This estimation becomes harder for medium to large commercial buildings, where a one-size-fits-all solution cannot be adopted and potential energy cost savings might not be sufficient to cover a tailored solution. Therefore, value propositions in addition to energy efficiency alone can make MPC technology more attractive through additional energy cost savings. One such value proposition is load shifting in response to dynamic electricity prices. On this aspect, MPC is a key technology to unlock building thermal mass for energy flexibility in response to electric grid conditions. This study shows the experimental results of MPC control of an office building in Berkeley, where different dynamic electricity price profiles were used in the MPC objective function to shift the building load and to calculate hypothetical electricity costs. Results show potential 50% cost savings with respect to the existing controller with the dynamic price scenario.

RASA Field Performance at US International Monitoring Stations

This report attempts to collate, analyze, and summarize RASA performance over time at each of 11 US operated IMS stations. The performance over time was compared to routine maintenance operations. The data, in general, were summarized into a set analyzed almost exclusively in Excel. The data set allows for further probing into RASA performance over time. The data set would permit data to be routinely added for continued analysis. In general, all RASA systems ran within the CTBTO mandated the MDA requirements over their current lifetime of operations. The largest impacts to performance appeared to arise from variabilities of Germanium gamma detectors as they were replaced. It is noted that the air volumes of samples were not provided and had to be assumed to be constant over the period analyzed.

Field Performance of South-Facing and East-West Facing Bifacial Modules in the Arctic

This paper presents the first systematic comparison between south-facing monofacial and bifacial photovoltaic (PV) modules, as well as between south-facing bifacial and vertical east-west facing bifacial PV modules in Alaska. The state’s solar industry, driven by the high price of energy and dropping equipment costs, is quickly growing. The challenges posed by extreme sun angles in Alaska’s northern regions also present opportunities for unique system designs. Annual bifacial gains of 21% were observed between side by side south-facing monofacial and bifacial modules. Vertical east-west bifacial modules had virtually the same annual production as south-facing latitude tilt bifacial modules, but with different energy production profiles.

Probabilistic Analysis of Gas Turbine Field Performance

A gas turbine thermodynamic cycle was computationally simulated and probabilistically evaluated in view of the several uncertainties in the performance parameters, which are indices of gas turbine health. Cumulative distribution functions and sensitivity factors were computed for the overall thermal efficiency and net specific power output due to the thermodynamic random variables. These results can be used to quickly identify the most critical design variables in order to optimize the design, enhance performance, increase system availability and make it cost effective. The analysis leads to the selection of the appropriate measurements to be used in the gas turbine health determination and to the identification of both the most critical measurements and parameters. Probabilistic analysis aims at unifying and improving the control and health monitoring of gas turbine aero-engines by increasing the quality and quantity of information available about the engine's health and performance.

Methods and systems for treatment of superconducting materials to improve low field performance

A system and method for treating a cavity comprises preparing a superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavity for removal of a dielectric layer from on an inner surface of the SRF cavity, subjecting the SRF cavity to a heat treatment in order to remove the dielectric layer from the inner surface of the SRF cavity, and preventing the development of a new dielectric layer on the inner surface of the SRF cavity by preventing an interaction between the inner surface of the SRF cavity and atmospheric gasses.
