Deblurring

In most instances, traditional EEG methodology provides insufficient spatial detail to identify relationships between brain electrical events and structures and functions visualized by magnetic resonance imaging or positron emission tomography. This article describes a method called Deblurring for increasing the spatial detail of the EEG and for fusing neurophysiologic and neuroanatomic data. Deblurring estimates potentials near the outer convexity of the cortex using a realistic finite element model of the structure of a subject's head determined from their magnetic resonance images. Deblurring is not a source localization technique and thus makes no assumptions about the number or type of generator sources. The validity of Deblurring has been initially tested by comparing deblurred data with potentials measured with subdural grid recordings. Results suggest that deblurred topographic maps, registered with a subject's magnetic resonance imaging and rendered in three dimensions, provide better spatial detail than has heretofore been obtained with scalp EEG recordings. Example results are presented from research studies of somatosensory stimulation, movement, language, attention and working memory. Deblurred ictal EEG data are also presented, indicating that this technique may have future clinical application as an aid to seizure localization and surgical planning.

Maximum entropy method applied to deblurring images on a MasPar MP-1 computer

A statistical inference method based on the principle of maximum entropy is developed for the purpose of enhancing and restoring satellite images. The proposed maximum entropy image restoration method is shown to overcome the difficulties associated with image restoration and provide the smoothest and most appropriate solution consistent with the measured data. An implementation of the method on the MP-1 computer is described, and results of tests on simulated data are presented.

Image sharpening by holography.

Discussion of the physical and mathematical fundamentals, performance capabilities and potential applications of image deblurring by holography. It is shown that a blurred photograph may be deblurred and a sharpened image extracted from it because the 'blurring' in the original photograph did not irretrievably lose the imaging information, notably in the spatial-frequency regions required for faithful imaging and for high resolution. The principles of optical image deblurring are highly mathematical in nature. One of the most important applications of holographic image deblurring is shown to be the sharpening of electron micrographs of biological specimens beyond the ultimate that can be achieved with even the most powerful instruments available.

Image enhancement by holography.

The speed of the holographic image deblurring method has recently been further enhanced by a new speed in the realization of the powerful holographic image-deblurring filter. The filter makes it possible to carry out the deblurring, in the optical computer used, in times of the order of one second. The experimental achievements using the holographic image-enhancement method are illustrated with examples ranging from out-of-focus or motion-blurred photographs, including 'amateur' photos recorded on Polaroid film, to the sharpening of the best available electron micrographs of viruses. Images recorded with X-rays, notably from rocket-borne photos of the sun, and out-of-focus photographs from cameras in NASA satellites have been similarly deblurred.

Photographic Image Restoration

Deblurring capabilities would significantly improve the Flight Science Support Office's ability to monitor the effects of lift-off on the shuttle and landing on the orbiter. A deblurring program was written and implemented to extract information from blurred images containing a straight line or edge and to use that information to deblur the image. The program was successfully applied to an image blurred by improper focussing and two blurred by different amounts of blurring. In all cases, the reconstructed modulation transfer function not only had the same zero contours as the Fourier transform of the blurred image but the associated point spread function also had structure not easily described by simple parameterizations. The difficulties posed by the presence of noise in the blurred image necessitated special consideration. An amplitude modification technique was developed for the zero contours of the modulation transfer function at low to moderate frequencies and a smooth filter was used to suppress high frequency noise.

Optical computing.

Applications of the optical computer include an approach for increasing the sharpness of images obtained from the most powerful electron microscopes and fingerprint/credit card identification. The information-handling capability of the various optical computing processes is very great. Modern synthetic-aperture radars scan upward of 100,000 resolvable elements per second. Fields which have assumed major importance on the basis of optical computing principles are optical image deblurring, coherent side-looking synthetic-aperture radar, and correlative pattern recognition. Some examples of the most dramatic image deblurring results are shown.

Photographic image enhancement

Deblurring capabilities would significantly improve the scientific return from Space Shuttle crew-acquired images of the Earth and the safety of Space Shuttle missions. Deblurring techniques were developed and demonstrated on two digitized images that were blurred in different ways. The first was blurred by a Gaussian blurring function analogous to that caused by atmospheric turbulence, while the second was blurred by improper focussing. It was demonstrated, in both cases, that the nature of the blurring (Gaussian and Airy) and the appropriate parameters could be obtained from the Fourier transformation of their images. The difficulties posed by the presence of noise necessitated special consideration. It was demonstrated that a modified Wiener frequency filter judiciously constructed to avoid over emphasis of frequency regions dominated by noise resulted in substantially improved images. Several important areas of future research were identified. Two areas of particular promise are the extraction of blurring information directly from the spatial images and improved noise abatement form investigations of select spatial regions and the elimination of spike noise.

Rapid data comparison technique development for N-ray/X-ray analysis

An operational N-ray/X-ray computer analysis system for nondestructive testing problems was realized by developing: (1) more efficient data transfer routines for use in existing image processing systems; (2) the capability to store and analyze multiple N-ray/X-ray images; (3) an efficient 2-D Fast Fourier Transform; and (4) transfer functions compensation capability to correct for distortions and nonlinearities of N-rays/X-rays. Applications of the technique are summarized for the following: thermal protection system tile with hydraulic fluid; thermal protection system tile with corrosion; thermal protection system tile debonding; stainless steel tubing corrosion; defective electrical devices; fast film restoration and deblur; corrosion tracking over time; reduction of source vignetting, and identification of materials (0 rings, Teflon parts, soft goods) via table look up.

Comparison of In-situ Near Infrared Melt Pool Imagery to Optical Microscopy Measurements

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a rapidly growing technology. An area of major importance is the integrity and repeatability of AM parts. The goal is to reduce obstacles to certify AM built parts to allow for use in critical aerospace applications. In-situ nondestructive evaluation sensors can be used for build assessment and can potentially play a key role in certifying AM parts. For example, melt pool features are understood to have a strong correlation to microstructural defects and the use of a near infrared (NIR) camera can be used to record the melt pool, cooling areas, and temperature gradients during the build. This work explores the use of a low cost NIR camera to obtain single line track imagery of the Ti-6Al-4V melt pools for various processing parameters. The NIR camera is radiometrically calibrated and configured in-line with the laser source to obtain high resolution imagery of the melt pool shape and dynamics. The challenge to measure melt pool shapes is to identify the transition points between the metal solid to liquid phase. Factors for melt pool measurements such as thermal camera pixel resolution, surface emissivity, and blurring due to the laser beam movement are discussed. Lastly, the melt pool imagery are compared to optical microscopy measurements for validation.
