Precision tunable resonant microwave cavity

A tunable microwave cavity containing ionizable metallic vapor or gases and an apparatus for precisely positioning a microwave coupling tip in the cavity and for precisely adjusting at least one dimension of the cavity are disclosed. With this combined structure, resonance may be achieved with various types of ionizable gases. A coaxial probe extends into a microwave cavity through a tube. One end of the tube is retained in a spherical joint attached in the cavity wall. This allows the coaxial probe to be pivotally rotated. The coaxial probe is slideable within the tube thus allowing the probe to be extended toward or retracted from the center of the cavity.

Measuring Q And f(sub r) Of A Microwave Cavity: Part I

Method of measuring quality factor (Q) and frequency of resonance (f(subr)) of microwave cavity exploits two inflection points of power-vs.-frequency resonance curve of cavity. Intended particularly for use with microwave cavity in which sample of lossy dielectric material heated to specified high temperature by microwave power at resonant frequency. Accurate measurement contributes to enhanced monitoring and control in contactless high-temperature processing of materials. Also used with small spherical sample to determine temperature dependence of complex dielectric constant.

Compact microwave cavity for hydrogen atomic clock

A summary is presented that introduces the compact microwave cavity used in the hydrogen atomic clock. Special emphasis is placed on derivation of theoretical calculating equations of main parameters of the microwave cavity. A brief description is given of several methods for discriminating the oscillating modes. Experimental data and respective calculated values are also presented.

Tunable Microwave Cavity For Ion Source

Movable probe and tuning wall adjusted to obtain resonance at microwave frequency used to generate plasma in cell at one end of microwave cavity. Electroless discharge without disadvantages of dc-cathode-discharge and RF-induction methods. To achieve precise positioning, coaxial probe extends into microwave cavity through tube.

Measuring Q And f(sub r) Of A Microwave Cavity: Part II

Frequency maintained at f(sub r), and Q determined from decay-rate measurement. Like "Measuring Q and f(sub r) of a Microwave Cavity: Part I" (NPO-19101), method used with microwave cavity in which sample of lossy dielectric material heated to specified high temperature by microwave power at resonant frequency. Methods contribute to accurate measurement of Q and f(sub r) for enhanced monitoring and control in contactless high-temperature processing of materials. Present method more effective in maintaining constant temperature. Also implemented more simply and at lower cost.

Microwave Cavity Clocks On Space Station

We describe the status of a microwave cavity clock experiment to perform improved tests of Local Position Invariance and Lorentz Invariance on the International Space Station in conjunction with atomic clocks. Significant improvements over present bounds are expected in both cases. The oscillators can also be used to enhance the performance of atomic clocks at short time scales for other experiments.

Spatial electron density and electric field strength measurements in microwave cavity experiments

Measurements of electron density and electric field strength have been made in an argon plasma contained in a resonant microwave cavity at 2.45 GHz. Spatial measurements of electron density, n sub e, are correlated with fluorescence observations of the discharge. Measurements of n sub e were made with Stark broadening and compared with n sub 3 calculated from measured plasma conductivity. Additional measurements of n sub 3 as a function of pressure and in mixtures of argon and oxygen are presented for pressures from 10 Torr to 1 atm. Measurements in flowing gases and in static systems are presented. In addition, limitations of these measurements are identified.

Hydrogen density measurements using an open-ended microwave cavity.

The density measurement of liquid hydrogen and two-phase mixtures of liquid and gaseous hydrogen is considered. This paper describes a complete prototype system that uses an open-ended microwave cavity for making dynamic density measurements of flowing hydrogen in a transfer line. The theory of operation along with test results for both the single- and two-phase cases are presented and discussed.
