Dynamic Moire Methods for Detection of Loosened Space Shuttle Tiles

Moire fringe methods for detecting loose space shuttle tiles were investigated with a test panel consisting of a loose tile surrounded by four securely bonded tiles. The test panel was excited from 20 to 150 Hz with in-plane sinusoidal acceleration of 2 g (peak). If the shuttle orbiter can be subjected to periodic excitation of 1 to 2 g (peak) and rigid-body periodic displacements do not mask the change in the Moire pattern due to tile looseness, then the use of projected Moire fringes to detect out-of-plane rockin appears to be the most viable indicator of tile looseness since no modifications to the tiles are required.

Geometric moire methods with enhanced sensitivity by optical/digital fringe multiplication

A robust fringe-shifting and image processing scheme is applied to geometric moire experiments. High quality contour maps of U, V and W displacement fields are obtained with sensitivity enhanced by a factor of ten. The method is compatible with complicated intensity distributions, variable bar-to-space ratios of gratings, and optical noise. It is applicable to large fields for both in-plane moire and shadow moire measurements.

Buckling analysis and test correlation of hat stiffened panels for hypersonic vehicles

The paper discusses the design, analysis, and test of hat stiffened panels subjected to a variety of thermal and mechanical load conditions. The panels were designed using data from structural optimization computer codes and finite element analysis. Test methods included the grid shadow moire method and a single gage force stiffness method. The agreement between the test data and analysis provides confidence in the methods that are currently being used to design structures for hypersonic vehicles. The agreement also indicates that post buckled strength may potentially be used to reduce the vehicle weight.

Buckling analysis and test correlation of high temperature structural panels

This paper focuses on the design, analysis, and test of a high temperature structural panel, constructed of Ti-6-4, subjected to a variety of thermal and mechanical load conditions. A follow-on panel, constructed of TMC, is also discussed in less detail. The design constraints and test set-up are discussed, as well as the test methods that were used: the grid shadow moire method and a single gage force stiffness method. The agreement between the test data and analysis for this test program provides confidence in the methods that are currently being used to design structures for hypersonic vehicles. The agreement also suggests that postbuckled strength may potentially be used to reduce the vehicle weight.

X-Ray Moire Techniques For Measuring Strain

X-ray moire method provides for measurement of strains throughout relatively large regions and in locations invisible or inaccessible to measurement by other techniques. For example, used to measure strains between layers of material in rubber tires. Method exploits body of knowledge already developed for optical moire measurement of strains. Offers advantages over optical methods of measuring strains within depths of objects, in that x-ray imaging not restricted to optically transparent materials. Also offers advantages over strain-gauge method that gauge wires not needed and measurements not limited to discrete gauge points.

The extraction of accurate coordinates of images on photographic plates by means of a scanning type measuring machine

The Moire method experimental stress analysis is similar to a problem encountered in astrometry. It is necessary to extract accurate coordinates from images on photographic plates. The solution to the mutual problem found applicable to the field of experimental stress analysis is presented to outline the measurement problem. A discussion of the photo-reading device developed to make the measurements follows.

The investigation of the mechanical properties of thermoviscoelastic material

An image moire method is used to determine Poisson's ratio for PMMA at different temperatures. A uniaxial tensile specimen is strained axially to a constant strain, and the lateral strain and the axial strain are monitored by a period photographic record. Simultaneous recording of the tensile stress yields the Young's modulus in relaxation and the corresponding Poisson effect. The test temperatures range from room temperature to 125 C. The data are then used to deduce the bulk relaxation moduli.

Deferred electronic heterodyne moire deflectometry: A method for transient density fields measurement

Effects of spherical aberrations of the mirror used in the moire system on the angular resolution of the system are investigated. It is shown that the spherical aberrations may reduce significantly the performance of the conventional moire deflectometer. However, due to the heterodyne procedure, this is not the case with the heterodyne moire system. A moire system with a constant speed moving grating is demonstrated. It is shown that the system readout is linear and the system does not need calibration. In addition, the repeatability of the measurements is improved in this system as compared to the sinusoidally moving grating setup. The problem of the photographic plates alignment is solved by using a mechanical system in which the plate is held firmly throughout the experiment and accurately replaced after removing for photographic processing. The effect of a circular detector's aperture size on readout was tested. It is shown that the spatial phase variations, observed when scanning along a straight moire fringe, may considerably be reduced. At present we may say that both the on-line and the deferred heterodyne moire techniques may reliably be used. The errors of phase readings are 1 deg and 5 deg for the on-line and deferred methods. The total error due to subtraction of two readings at each position is, therefore, 1.4 deg and 7 deg, respectively. Further research for improving the deferred system is suggested.

Electronic heterodyne moire deflectometry: A method for transient and three dimensional density fields measurements

Effects of diffraction and nonlinear photographic emulsion characteristics on the performance of deferred electronic heterodyne moire deflectometry are investigated. The deferred deflectometry is used for measurements of nonsteady phase objects where it is difficult to complete the analysis of the field in real time. The sensitivity, accuracy and resolution of the system are calculated and it is shown that they are weakly affected by diffraction and by nonlinear recording. The feactures of the system are significantly improved compared with the conventional deferred intensity moire technique, and are comparable with the online heterodyne moire. The system was evaluated experimentally by deferred measurements of the refractive index gradients of a weak phase object consisting of a large KD*P crystal. This was done by photographing the phase object through a Ronchi grating and analyzing the tranparency with the electronic heterodyne readout system. The results are compared with the measurements performed on the same phase object with online heterodyne moire deflectometry and with heterodyne holographic interferometry methods. Some practical considerations for system improvement are discussed.

Radiographic Moire

A method for the x-ray inspection of materials making use of the Moire effect is described. The Moire effect results when two patterns are superimposed; a third pattern is produced. Any change in either of the first two patterns creates a change in the third. Moire inspection is common with visible light. This invention allows the technique to be extended to locations inaccessible to visual inspection. A first pattern of high radio contrast material is attached to or included in the sample. X-rays are projected through the sample. A second pattern is imposed at the observation point, either before or after the formation of the x-ray image. The two patterns interact to create a third, Moire, pattern. As the material is stressed the Moire pattern changes, the degree of change indicating the degree of stress.

Measuring the conductor spacing in flat conductor cables

Interference method produces a moire pattern having a shape correlated with the lead spacing. A continuous check of the spacing is possible if the material between the leads is translucent. Technique is quick, accurate, convenient, and simple to operate.

Optical-precision alignment of diffraction grating mold in moire interferometry

A high-precision optical method is presented for aligning diffraction grating molds with the edges of specimens in moire interferometry. The alignment fixture is simple and convenient to operate. The conventional method of grating-mold alignment has a wide band of uncertainty in the range of error which is not compatible with the required precision of high-sensitivity moire interferometry. Following a description of the alignment technique, both the single-edge and parallel-edge guide bar optical alignment methods are introduced and compared.

Hybrid analysis of deformation using interferometric measurements

Two hybrid methods of deformation analysis combining moire interferometry and finite element techniques are introduced. The hybrid methods are applied to determine the strain fields in the test section of a composite cruciform specimen in order to evaluate the uniformity of the shear strain field. Both methods show that there are significant shear strain gradients in the specimen test section. One of the hybrid methods - the full-field analysis using the random-node mesh generator - detects the presence of material property nonuniformity which is assumed uniform in the boundary-node method.

On the off-axis tensile test for unidirectional composites

The off axis tensile test was examined experimentally to obtain actual displacement fields over the surface of graphite polyimide coupon specimens. The experimental results were compared with approximate analytical solutions and generated finite element results. An optical method of high sensitivity moire interferometry was used to determine the actual displacements to high precision. The approximate analytical solution and the finite element results compare very favorably with the measured centerline displacements in the test section, and the finite element displacement fields provide excellent agreement with the moire displacements throughout the specimen. A 15 degree fiber orientation and coupon aspect ratios of 5 and 15 are presented.
