Large magnetoresistance and first-order phase transition in antiferromagnetic single-crystalline EuAg 4 Sb 2

Here, we present the results of a thorough investigation of the physical properties of EuAg 4 Sb 2 single crystals using magnetization, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity measurements. High-quality single crystals, which crystallize in a trigonal structure with space group 𝑅⁢$\bar{3}$𝑚, were grown using a conventional flux method. Temperature-dependent magnetization measurements along different crystallographic orientations confirm two antiferromagnetic phase transitions around 𝑇 𝑁⁢1 = 10.5K and 𝑇 𝑁⁢2 = 7.5K. Isothermal magnetization data exhibit several metamagnetic transitions below these transition temperatures. Antiferromagnetic phase transitions in EuAg 4 Sb 2 are further confirmed by two sharp peaks in the temperature-dependent heat capacity data at 𝑇 𝑁⁢1 and 𝑇 𝑁⁢2 , which shift to lower temperature in the presence of an external magnetic field. Our systematic heat capacity measurements utilizing a long-pulse and single-slope analysis technique allow us to detect a first-order phase transition in EuAg 4 Sb 2 at 7.5 K. The temperature-dependent electrical resistivity data also manifest two features associated with magnetic order. The magnetoresistance exhibits a broad hump due to a field-induced metamagnetic transition. Remarkably, the magnetoresistance keeps increasing without showing any tendency to saturate as the applied magnetic field increases, and it reaches ∼20 000% at 1.6 K and 60 T. At high magnetic fields, several magnetic quantum oscillations are observed, indicating a complex Fermi surface. A large negative magnetoresistance of about −55% is also observed near 𝑇 𝑁⁢1 . Moreover, the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram constructed using magnetization, heat capacity, and magnetotransport data indicates complex magnetic behavior in EuAg 4 Sb 2 .

Robust Spin-Moiré-Superlattice-Driven Gap Opening in EuAg 4 Sb 2 under in-Plane Magnetic Field

Moiré superlattices introduce new length and energy scales, enabling discoveries, such as unconventional superconductivity, in 2D systems. This concept has recently been extended to bulk materials with multiple-q spin textures, opening exciting opportunities for spin moiré physics. A notable example is EuAg 4 S b2 , where a spin moiré superlattice (SMS), manifested as a double-q spin modulation, induces a superzone gap opening. In this work, we investigate the tunability of this gap by an in-plane magnetic field in EuAg 4 Sb 2 by using neutron scattering, magnetization, and transport measurements. We reveal a cycloidal ground state and multiple spin-reoriented phases induced by the in-plane field, highlighting the critical role of in-plane components in driving magnetic transitions. Moreover, we demonstrate that a robust gap opening persists in the double-q phase, regardless of in-plane field orientation. Model calculations attribute this robustness to the stability of the SMS under tilted fields. Here, our results establish EuAg 4 Sb 2 as a tunable platform for exploring the spin-texture-driven superzone gap opening in electronic states.

Mapping the three-dimensional fermiology of the triangular lattice magnet EuAg 4 Sb 2

In this paper, we report the temperature-field phase diagram as well as present a comprehensive study of the electronic structure and three-dimensional fermiology of the triangular-lattice magnet EuAg 4 ⁢Sb 2 , utilizing quantum oscillation measurements, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. The complex magnetic phase diagram of EuAg 4 ⁢Sb 2 highlights many transitions through nontrivial AFM states. Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen oscillations were observed in the polarized ferromagnetic state of EuAg 4 ⁢Sb 2 , revealing three pairs of distinct spin-split frequency branches with small effective masses. A comparison of the angle-dependent oscillation data with first-principles calculations in the ferromagnetic state and angle-resolved photoemission spectra shows good agreement, identifying tubular hole pockets and hourglass-shaped hole pockets at the Brillouin zone center, as well as diamond-shaped electron pockets at the zone boundary. As the temperature increases, the frequency branches of the tiny hourglass pockets evolve into a more cylindrical shape, while the larger pockets remain unchanged. This highlights that variations in exchange splitting, driven by changes in the magnetic moment, primarily impact the small Fermi pockets without significantly altering the overall band structure. As a result, this is consistent with first-principles calculations, which show minimal changes near the Fermi level across ferromagnetic and simple antiferromagnetic states or under varying on-site Coulomb repulsion.

Pressure tuning of structural and magnetic transitions in EuAg 4 As 2

We report temperature-dependent measurements of ambient-pressure specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, anisotropic resistivity, and thermal expansion as well as in-plane resistivity under pressure up to 20.8 kbar on single crystals of EuAg 4 As 2 . Based on thermal expansion and in-plane electrical transport measurements at ambient pressure this compound has two, first-order, structural transitions in the 80–120 K temperature range. Ambient-pressure specific heat, magnetization, and thermal expansion measurements show a cascade of up to seven transitions between 8 and 16 K associated with the ordering of the $Eu^{2+}$ moments. In-plane electrical transport is able to detect the more prominent of these transitions, at 15.5, 9.9, and 8.7 K, as well as a weak feature at 11.8 K at ambient pressure. Pressure-dependent electrical transport data show that the magnetic transitions shift to higher temperatures under pressure, as does the upper structural transition, whereas the lower structural transition is suppressed and ultimately vanishes. A jump in resistivity, associated with the upper structural transition, decreases under pressure with an extrapolated disappearance (or a change of sign) by 30–35 kbar. In the 10–15 kbar range a kink in the pressure dependency of the upper structural transition temperature as well as the high- and low-temperature in-plane resistivities suggests that a change in the electronic structure may occur in this pressure range. The results are compared with the literature data for EuAg 4 As 2 .

Structural distortion and incommensurate noncollinear magnetism in EuAg 4 As 2

Layered pnictide materials have provided a fruitful platform to study various emergent phenomena, including superconductivity, magnetism, charge density waves, etc. In this work, we report the observation of structural distortion and noncollinear magnetism in layered pnictide EuAg 4 As 2 via transport, magnetization, single crystal x-ray, and neutron diffraction data.EuAg 4 As 2 single crystal shows a structural distortion at 120 K, where two sets of superlattice peaks with the propagation vectors of q 1 =±(0, 0.25, 0.5) and q 2 =±(0.25, 0, 1) emerge. Between 9–15 K, the hexagonal Eu 2+ sublattice enters an unpinned incommensurate magnetic state, with magnetic Bragg reflections pictured as circular sectors. Furthermore, below 9 K, it orders in an incommensurate noncollinear antiferromagnetic state with a well-defined propagation wavevector of (0, 0.1, 0.12) and a very rare magnetic structure, which is helical along the c axis and cycloidal along the b axis with a moment of 6.4 μB/Eu 2+ . Furthermore, rich magnetic phases under magnetic fields, large magnetoresistance, and strong coupling between charge carriers and magnetism in EuAg 4 As 2 are revealed.

Electronic commensuration of a spin moiré superlattice in a layered magnetic semimetal

Spin moiré superlattices (SMSs) have been proposed as a magnetic analog of crystallographic moiré systems and a source of electron minibands offering vector-field moiré tunability and Berry curvature effects. However, it has proven challenging to realize an SMS in which a large exchange coupling J is transmitted between conduction electrons and localized spins. Furthermore, most systems have carrier mean free paths l mfp shorter than their spin moiré lattice constant a spin , inhibiting miniband formation. Here, we discover that the layered magnetic semimetal EuAg 4 Sb 2 overcomes these challenges by forming an interface with J ~ 100 milli–electron volts transferred between a Eu triangular lattice and anionic Ag 2 Sb bilayers hosting a two-dimensional electron band in the ballistic regime (l mfp >> a spin ). The system realizes an SMS with a spin commensurate with the Fermi momentum, leading to a marked quenching of the transport response from miniband formation. Our findings demonstrate an approach to magnetically engineering moiré superlattices and a potential route to an emergent spin-driven quantum Hall state.
