Research on the elastic stability of large shells

Tests were conducted to determine the elastic stability of large shell structures. The configuration of the shells and the instrumentation used in the measurements are described. The testing procedures are explained. Results of the stress analysis are plotted in polar graph form to show the areas of strain in micro inches at the outer surface of the skin and the inner lip of the stringer.

Generalized analysis of experimental observations in problems of elastic stability

A generalized method of analyzing experimental observations in problems of elastic stability is presented in which the initial readings of load and deflection may be taken at any load less the critical load. The analysis is an extension of a method published by Southwell in 1932, in which it was assumed that the initial readings are taken at zero load.

Elastic stability of biaxially loaded longitudinally stiffened composite structures.

A linear analysis method is presented for the elastic stability of structures of uniform cross section, that may be idealized as an assemblage of laminated plate-strips, flat and curved, and beams. Each plate-strip and beam covers the entire length of the structure and is simply supported on the edges normal to the longitudinal axis. Arbitrary boundary conditions may be specified on any external longitudinal side of plate-strips. The structure or selected plate-strips may be loaded in any desired combination of inplane biaxial loads. The analysis simultaneously considers all modes of instability and is applicable for the buckling of laminated composite structures. Some numerical results are presented to indicate possible applications.

DEVELOPMENT OF DESIGN STRENGTH LEVELS FOR THE ELASTIC STABILITY OF MONOCOQUE CONES UNDER AXIAL COMPRESSION

Design relationships have been derived for the determination of elastic buckling strength levels for unpressurized monocoque truncated cones under axial compression. Theoretical implications have been considered in the establishment of a semi-empirical analysis leading to the development of probability based design expressions. Data from 170 tests by various investigators were statistically evaluated for the expected mean, 90%, and 99% probability strength levels. Dispersion of data was found to be slightly less than that of monocoque cylinders. Non-linear effects of radius to thickness ratio or strength deterioration with length to radius ratio were not discernible.

ELASTIC STABILITY CONSIDERATIONS IN AIRCRAFT STRUCTURAL DESIGN

General instability in shell type structures is a relatively infrequent phenomenon. By general instability is meant that a complete section of a structure becomes elastically unstable, as compared with local crippling or buckling. The first step in design is to rough size the structure and determine its compatibility with air vehicle configuration and system instillations. After this step has been completed, it is possible to survey the layouts to determine whether general instability is likely to occur. The general parameters of length, diameter, frame spacing, element stiffness, etc., are than investigated to determine if a general failing stress exists which is less than any local column, beam column, or panel failing stress. In this way, a well-balanced design is determined and general stability failing modes eliminated.

Elastic stability of superplastically formed/diffusion-bonded orthogonally corrugated core sandwich plates

The paper concerns the elastic buckling behavior of a newly developed superplastically formed/diffusion-bonded (SPF/DB) orthogonally corrugated core sandwich plate. Uniaxial buckling loads were calculated for this type of sandwich plate with simply supported edges by using orthotropic sandwich plate theory. The buckling behavior of this sandwich plate was then compared with that of an SPF/DB unidirectionally corrugated core sandwich plate under conditions of equal structural density. It was found that the buckling load for the former was considerably higher than that of the latter.

ELASTIC STABILITY OF SIMPLY SUPPORTED CORRUGATED CORE SANDWICH CYLINDERS

Theoretical buckling coefficients are obtained for the general instability of simply supported, corrugated core sandwich circular cylinders under combined loads with the core oriented parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. Buckling curves are presented for axial compression, external lateral pressure, torsion, and some typical interactions. The differential equations of equilibrium used to obtain the buckling equations were derived from the small deflection equations of Stein and Mayer which include the effect of deformation due to transverse shear. These equations are solved by Galerkin's equation. Remarks are made concerning the probable validity of the results of the small deflection theory for sandwich shells.

Dynamic Nonlinear Elastic Stability of Helicopter Rotor Blades in Hover and in Forward Flight

Equations for large coupled flap-lag motion of hingeless elastic helicopter blades are consistently derived. Only torsionally-rigid blades excited by quasi-steady aerodynamic loads are considered. The nonlinear equations of motion in the time and space variables are reduced to a system of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations with periodic coefficients, using Galerkin's method for the space variables. The nonlinearities present in the equations are those arising from the inclusion of moderately large deflections in the inertia and aerodynamic loading terms. The resulting system of nonlinear equations has been solved, using an asymptotic expansion procedure in multiple time scales. The stability boundaries, amplitudes of nonlinear response, and conditions for existence of limit cycles are obtained analytically. Thus, the different roles played by the forcing function, parametric excitation, and nonlinear coupling in affecting the solution can be easily identified, and the basic physical mechanism of coupled flap-lag response becomes clear. The effect of forward flight is obtained with the requirement of trimmed flight at fixed values of the thrust coefficient.

Elastic stability of laminated, flat and curved, long rectangular plates subjected to combined inplane loads

A method is presented to predict theoretical buckling loads of long, rectangular flat and curved laminated plates with arbitrary orientation of orthotropic axes each lamina. The plate is subjected to combined inplane normal and shear loads. Arbitrary boundary conditions may be stipulated along the longitudinal sides of the plate. In the absence of inplane shear loads and extensional-shear coupling, the analysis is also applicable to finite length plates. Numerical results are presented for curved laminated composite plates with boundary conditions and subjected to various loadings. These results indicate some of the complexities involved in the numerical solution of the analysis for general laminates. The results also show that the reduced bending stiffness approximation when applied to buckling problems could lead to considerable error in some cases and therefore must be used with caution.

On the elastic stability of shells

A synopsis of a series of investigations into the instability of axially compressed cylindrical shells is given. The objective of the research, which was made with models, was to devise a technique of nondestructive evaluation. The results show that, with models at any rate, success was achieved. Probing methods which can be used to determine the locations of weakness and the pertinent instability load levels were devised. The research on large scale shells was undertaken to determine the critical loads under as uniform a circumferential distribution of axial compressive force as possible. It is clear from the results presented that this objective was met.

A simplified method of elastic-stability analysis for thin cylindrical shells I : Donnell's equation

The equation for the equilibrium of cylindrical shells introduced by Donnell in NACA Technical Report no. 479 to find the critical stresses of cylinders in torsion is applied to find critical stresses for cylinders with simply supported edges under other loading conditions. It is shown that by this method solutions may be obtained very easily and the results in each case may be expressed in terms of two nondimensional parameters, one dependent on the critical stress and the other essentially determined by the geometry of the cylinder. The influence of boundary conditions related to edge displacements in the shell median surface is discussed. The accuracy of the solutions found is established by comparing them with previous theoretical solutions and with test results. The solutions to a number of problems concerned with the buckling of cylinders with simply supported edges on the basis of a unified viewpoint are presented in a convenient form for practical use.
