Analysis of the Erosion of Cubic Centered and Face Centered Metallic Materials [Analyse de L'erosion de Matereaux Metalliques de Structures Cubiques Centree et Face Centree]

A generalized law of erosion, in nondimensional form, is proposed. The aforementioned explicitly gives an account of the nature and the microstructure of the material impacted, the angle of impact of the particles, and their hardness. The erosion behavior of various steels, pig iron, and cast iron is examined as well as the behavior of new ordered intermetallic materials, Fe-25% Al-(Zr, Cr, B). The concern of such alloys in an erosion-corrosion environment is shown.

Magnetospheric boundary dynamics - DE 1 and DE 2 observations near the magnetopause and cusp

Results are presented of a detailed analysis of plasma and field measurements taken close in time by the DE 1 and DE 2 satellites during the September 6, 1982 magnetic storm. High-altitude data show that, during the storm, the DE 1 satellite entered the magnetosheath by crossing a magnetopause with a large normal magnetic field component, and data from DE 2 show a well-defined cusp current system occurring on open magnetic field lines. The interactions of the solar wind/IMF with the magnetosphere low-altitude signatures of the magnetopause that most adequately explain the high-altitude observations of DE 1 and the near-earth cusp observations of DE 2 are considered, and the relationship between the measurements made by the two satellites are discussed.

Near-conjugate observations of polar cusp electron precipitation using DE 1 and DE 2

The DE 1/2 plasma measurements of the dayside polar cusp at high and low altitudes have been examined for six near-conjugate passes. The plasma moments of downward electrons are computed, including energy flux, near flux, number density, and average energy from plasma data from both the high-altitude plasma instrument and the low-altitude plasma instrument. The DE 1/2 plasma measurements at the peaks of energy flux are compared, and the downward energy flux expected at the DE 2 altitude is modelled according to the convergence of magnetic flux tubes and using the DE 1 plasma data.

Near-conjugate observations of inverted-V electron precipitation using DE 1 and DE 2

A major focus of auroral research has been related to the inverted-V electron precipitation event, distinguished by the 'inverted-V' variation of peak energy flux in an energy-time spectrogram. Thieman and Hoffman (1984), in an examination of plasma data from near-conjugate DE 1/2 passes in the southern hemisphere, have found that some inverted-V events remain reasonably stable over a time span of up to 18 min, while other events change over shorter time periods. The present investigation has the objective to study quantitatively the energization of inverted-V electron fluxes and to compare the results with predictions from adiabatic acceleration by an electrostatic field. The obtained results suggest that the turbulent processes might contirbute minimally to the energy flux of secondary electrons for some events, but significantly for others.
