A guide to transient absorption spectroscopy for porous crystalline materials in photocatalysis

Transient absorption spectroscopy has become an increasingly accessible method for probing the fundamental mechanisms of photocatalytic reaction and has provided important mechanistic insights across a wide range of systems. However, recent studies on metal-organic framework and covalent-organic framework based photocatalysts employ transient absorption primarily as a supplementary characterization technique rather than as a tool for gaining mechanistic insight. This perspective identifies recurring limitations in current practices and outlines strategies for more deliberate application of transient absorption spectroscopy in photocatalysis. By emphasizing clarity in data presentation and interpretation, we aim to elevate transient absorption spectroscopy from a routine characterization tool to a powerful approach for elucidating mechanistic photophysics of framework materials that govern their photocatalytic performance.

Orbital Engineering Band Degeneracy in a Dual-Square Carbon-Oxide Framework

Electron band degeneracies in momentum space give rise to exotic quantum phenomena that have sparked intense interest in condensed matter physics and materials science. Nodal-lines─isolines in k-space formed by the incidental touching of two bands that share the same energy but belong to discrete eigenstates─arise in the presence of symmetries that preclude effective hybridization. Despite recent advances in the design, bottom-up assembly, and engineering of exotic electronic states in graphene nanomaterials, the extension of this approach to access synthetic two-dimensional (2D) quantum materials derived from metal- or covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) has lagged behind. Here we present a molecular orbital engineering approach for designing and fabricating an edge-centered dual square lattice within a π-conjugated 2D-tetraoxa[8]circulene (2D-TOC) COF. First-principles calculations and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy reveal the emergence of Frontier states at the center of a 3 × 3 lattice that give rise to Dirac nodal-lines in 2D-TOC. Our findings not only provide a general guide for the design of conjugated COFs with custom tailored electronic properties from molecular fragments but enable the exploration of emergent topological phenomena in synthetic 2D materials with potential application for high-speed, low-power data processing, transmission, and storage.

Bioelectrocatalytic conversion of CO₂ to PHA bioplastics using engineered methylotrophs

The sustainable generation of biodegradable plastics represents an opportunity to capture atmospheric CO 2 while reducing plastic waste accumulation in the environment. This study implements an integrated platform for bioelectrocatalytic CO 2 conversion to medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHAs). Immobilizing cobalt phthalocyanine electrocatalysts on a covalent-organic framework in a gas recirculation electrolyzer enabled CO 2 -to-methanol conversion with a carbon conversion efficiency of 98%. Integration of polymer biosynthesis pathways enabled Methylotuvimicrobium alcaliphilum 20Z R to produce ~20% mcl-PHA of the dry cell weight with a CO 2 -to-bioproducts carbon conversion efficiency of 50%. This cell line was adapted to high sodium bicarbonate media, eliminating costly intermediate separation steps while improving economic potential. Transcriptomic analysis revealed sulfate transporters and peptidoglycan biosynthesis as key pathways involved in sodium bicarbonate halotolerance. Altogether, this research presents a foundation for integrating divergent chemical and biological processes into a transformative electrobiomanufacturing platform, addressing the need for alternative pipelines for generating valuable plastics and chemicals.

Catalytic Porphyrin Framework Compounds

Porphyrins are frequently observed in nature and play a vital role in many biological functions, including light-harvesting, oxygen transport, and catalytic transformations. The rigid, robust, and multifunctional features of porphyrins enable the construction of framework compounds such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for use in several important applications. This short review here summarizes the types of porphyrin building blocks with varying connectivity, their assembly into framework compounds, and key structural factors governing porphyrin ligand design. Furthermore, we highlight emerging catalytic applications of these porphyrin framework compounds as Lewis acid catalysts, oxidation catalysts, photocatalysts, and electrocatalysts. Together, this review supplies a timely update on porphyrin ligand design and framework compound synthesis and guides the future development of porphyrin framework compounds with diverse functionalities for efficient catalysis.
