Multiscale Modeling of Fracture Strength in Fibrous Thermal Protection System Materials

This work presents a multiscale modeling approach to predict the fracture strength of fibrous Thermal Protection System (TPS) materials. The model assumes that system failure is initiated at the joints between individual fibers. We investigated three distinct TPS compositions: amorphous silica, alumina and aluminosilicate fibers. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to determine the fracture strength values of these fiber joints for both material systems. These fracture strength values were then integrated into simulations of 3D randomly populated fiber structures, where tensile load transfer occurs through the fiber joints. These microscale properties are upscaled through a renormalization approach [1] to predict macroscale tensile strength of 3D random fiber networks, accounting for joint-dominated failure and effective load-bearing area. The study concludes by demonstrating the resulting strength variation as a function of material composition, fiber density, and morphology. We also show validation of results by comparing them against explicit fiber finite element (FE) modeling [2] where fiber joint fracture is represented by cohesive elements.

X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy in High Temperature Oxidation of Metals and Alloys

An experimental technique is described that allows for the joint study of the kinetics and of the oxide structure during the high temperature oxidation of metal surfaces. Oxygen is supplied at the metal through an electrochemical oxygen pump and the oxygen pressure, at the metal surface, is measured during oxidation by a YSZ (yttria stabilized zirconia) oxygen sensor. XAS (x-ray absorption spectroscopy) is performed in fluorescence mode at the cation K edge and after each oxidation step. An appropriate analysis of the XAS spectra could provide information on both the oxidation kinetics and oxide structure. Experimental data on the high temperature oxidation of nickel, cobalt, and Fe(64%)Ni(36%) alloy, at low oxygen pressure, are reported and analyzed according to the proposed data reduction. These results indicate the presented technique to be particularly suitable for studying the hot corrosion of oxide film too thick for common surface spectroscopy (AUGER, ESCA) and too thin for conventional thermogravimetric technique.

Raman and Infrared Spectroscopy of Yttrium Aluminum Borate Glasses and Glass-ceramics

Raman spectra of glasses and glass-ceramics in the Y2O3-Al2O3-B2O3 system are reported. Glasses with B2O3 contents ranging from 40 to 60 mole percent were prepared by melting 20 g of the appropriate oxide or carbonate powders in alumina crucibles at 1400 C for 45 minutes. Subsequent heat treatments of the glasses at temperatures ranging from 600 to 800 C were performed in order to induce nucleation and crystallization. It was found that Na2CO3 added to the melt served as a nucleating agent and resulted in uniform bulk crystallization. The Raman spectra of the glasses are interpreted primarily in terms of vibrations of boron - oxygen structural groups. Comparison of the Raman spectra of the glass-ceramic samples with spectra of aluminate and borate crystalline materials reveal that these glasses crystallize primarily as yttrium aluminum borate, YAl3(BO3)4.

Cryogenic Mixed Mode I – Mode II Fracture Toughness of Various Polymer Composite Materials

The present study investigates the mixed mode interlaminar fracture toughness of six polymer matrix composite materials at both room temperature and cryogenic liquid nitrogen temperature. The single leg bending test employed gives a mix of Mode I (opening) and Mode II (in-plane shearing) cracking. The tested thermoplastic-matrix composites were shown to have total mixed mode toughnesses 3.1–4.3 times higher than those of representative thermoset resin composites.
