Multipole-based cable braid electromagnetic penetration model: magnetic penetration case

The goal of this paper is to present, for the first time, calculations of the magnetic penetration case of a first principles multipole-based cable braid electromagnetic penetration model. As a first test case, a one-dimensional array of perfect electrically conducting wires, for which an analytical solution is known, is investigated: we compare both the self-inductance and the transfer inductance results from our first principles cable braid electromagnetic penetration model to those obtained using the analytical solution. These results are found in good agreement up to a radius to half spacing ratio of about 0.78, demonstrating a robustness needed for many commercial and non-commercial cables. We then analyze a second set of test cases of a square array of wires whose solution is the same as the one-dimensional array result and of a rhomboidal array whose solution can be estimated from Kley's model. As a final test case, we consider two layers of one-dimensional arrays of wires to investigate porpoising effects analytically. We find good agreement with analytical and Kley's results for these geometries, verifying our proposed multipole model. Note that only our multipole model accounts for the full dependence on the actual cable geometry which enables us to model more complicated cable geometries.

Conceptual Design of a HTS Dipole Insert Based on Bi2212 Rutherford Cable

The U.S. Magnet Development Program (US-MDP) is aimed at developing high-field accelerator magnets with magnetic fields beyond the limits of Nb 3 Sn technology. Recent progress with composite wires and Rutherford cables based on the first generation high-temperature superconductor Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8-x (Bi2212) allows considering them for this purpose. However, Bi2212 wires and cables are sensitive to transverse stresses and strains, which are large in high-field accelerator magnets. This requires magnet designs with stress management concepts to control azimuthal and radial strains in the coil windings and prevent the degradation of the current carrying capability of Bi2212 conductor or even its permanent damage. This paper describes a novel stress management approach, which was developed at Fermilab for high-field large-aperture Nb 3 Sn accelerator magnets, and is now being applied to high-field dipole inserts based on Bi2212 Rutherford cables. The insert conceptual design and main parameters, including the superconducting wire and cable, as well as the coil stress management structure, key technological steps and approaches, test configurations and their target parameters, are presented and discussed.

Experiments in 3D Printing Electric Motors

This paper catalogues a series of experiments we conducted to explore how to 3D print a DC electric motor. The individual parts of the electric motor were 3D printed but assembled by hand. First, we focused on a rotor with soft magnetic properties, for which we adopted ProtoPasta TM , which is a commercial off-the-shelf PLA filament incorporating iron particles. Second, we focused on the stator permanent magnets, which were 3D printed through binder jetting. Third, we focused on the wire coils, for which we adopted a form of laminated object manufacture of copper wire. The chief challenge was in 3D printing the coils, because the winding density is crucial to the performance of the motor. We have demonstrated that DC electric motors can be 3D printed and assembled into a functional system. Although the performance was poor due to the wiring problem, we showed that the other 3D printing processes were consistent with high performance. Nevertheless, we demonstrated the principle of 3D printing electric motors.

Observations and Lessons Learned in Residential Roofing Integrated Photovoltaics

The data file includes field observations of residential roofing integrated photovoltaics installation that happened between July 2021 and June 2022 in California. There are 21 observations - 2 in the re-roofing category and 19 in the new construction category. The file includes two time and motion forms (Re-Roofing & New Construction) we used to capture the time it takes for each activity in the rooftop solar and electrical installation process. You will see the duration for detailed steps along with activities that are included for total installation time for the paper. There are three parts to the time and motion form - Part 1 has project and crew characteristics, product information, and inspection and permitting data and can be filled before the installation. Part 2 has the actual installation time stamps and related notes. Part 3 has the crew information and can be filled on-site or off-site, but this section is optional. The re-roofing form has pre-solar activities and gutters and vents section in Part 2 of the form, whereas new construction form includes a section for capturing the time it took for rough wiring. The re-roofing form does not include rough wiring but instead includes the final electrical wiring process. These are the key differences in both the forms. Each day/step/installation activity needs to include the crew break time as they happen and there is space available to capture the crew breaks duration. In Table 1 below, the different terms used in the time and motion form are defined and their corresponding unit of measurement stated. We also highlight the optional sections. The data is captured in total mins, total hours, person mins, person hours. You can use this form or make edits to the form to recreate the study or make your own observations. The data herein was reviewed but may not be comprehensive. NREL invites questions and inputs to improve the data, including to: Correct erroneous information Fill in missing/updated information Clarifications on data and variables Updated information may be submitted to Sushmita Jena at sushmita.jena@nlr.gov.

AMVOS: Additive Manufacturing Video Object Segmentation Dataset

This dataset provides labeled video frames from four additive manufacturing (AM) processes for video object segmentation (VOS) tasks. It contains 90 video segments comprising 900 individually annotated frames across five AM datasets: laser hot-wire directed energy deposition (LHW-DED), tungsten inert gas wire arc additive manufacturing (TIG-WAAM), plasma arc welding (PAW), visible-light polymer extrusion (visPolymer), and near-infrared polymer extrusion (irPolymer). Each video segment consists of 10 contiguous frames with corresponding pixel-level object instance annotations. Depending on the process, two of four object classes are labeled per frame: Melt Pool, Feed Wire, Nozzle, or Material. Raw frames are provided as .jpg files and annotations as palettized .png files. The dataset follows the directory structure of established VOS benchmarks (DAVIS, YouTube-VOS, MOSE), enabling direct integration into VOS model training and evaluation pipelines for foundation model fine-tuning, domain adaptation, or zero-shot performance benchmarking. Data was collected at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Manufacturing Demonstration Facility.

Analysis of Surveyor 3 television cable after residence on the moon

The Apollo 12 astronauts brought the Surveyor III television camera back from the moon in November 1969. Chemical analyses of a portion of television cable revealed changes in the glass fabric sleeve and in the wire insulation as a result of exposure to the lunar environment. Loss of volatile constituents from the glass fabric and a discoloration of the glass occurred. The Teflon layer on the wire showed a slight discoloration and possibly a slight change in its infrared spectrum. Both the polyimide layer and the Teflon layer of the wire insulation showed changes in tensile strength and elongation.

Characterization of GTA weldments in 10Ni-8CO-2Cr-1MO steel

This study of 10Ni-8Co-2Cr-1Mo steel includes evaluations of tensile, impact, hardness, fracture toughness properties, and metallographic features. Base plate and three weldments in one-inch thicknesses were examined to compare as-welded properties with those obtained after reaging, and results of welding the 10%Ni alloy with 9-4-20 wire as opposed to a matching weld wire composition. Critical crack sizes are calculated for the material. The most desirable weld properties are obtained using the matching weld wire and a reaging cycle. However, the improvement gained through reaging is probably not sufficient to justify the additional cost for most practical applications.

Droplet monitoring probe

A droplet monitoring system is disclosed for analysis of mixed-phase fluid flow in development of gas turbines. The system uses a probe comprising two electrical wires spaced a known distance apart and connected at one end to means for establishing a dc potential between the wires. A drop in the fluid stream momentarily contacting both wires simultaneously causes and electrical signal which is amplified, detected and counted.

The load-carrying and thermal characteristics of flat conductor cable

The load-carrying and thermal characteristics of flat conductor cable and round wire cables have been investigated with all conductors in each cable under varying loads in air and vacuum environments. The test procedure is described and results are presented in graphic form. Derating factors for both round wire and flat conductor cable are established for operation in a vacuum environment. Rating factors are established for flat conductor cable for use with round wire loading tables. The results of these tests show that single layer flat conductor size, or that the voltage drop across flat conductor cable will be lower than that of round cable under the same load.

Development of improved electroforming technique

Techniques were studied to reinforce or strengthen electroformed nickel to allow a fuller utilization of electroforming as a reliable and low cost fabrication technique for regenerately cooled thrust chambers. Techniques for wire wrapping while electrodepositing were developed that can result in a structurally strong wall with less weight than a conventional electroformed wall. Also a technique of codepositing submicron sized THO2 particles with the nickel to form a dispersion strengthened structure was evaluated. The standard nickel cylinders exhibited an average hoop strength of 80,000 psi with a yield strength of 65,000 psi and a modulus of 25.6 x 10 to the 6th power psi. The as produced dispersion strengthened nickel showed a hoop strength of 97,000 psi with a yield strength of 67,000 psi. This is an increase of 17,000 psi or 21% over the standard nickel hoop strength. The wire wrapping cylinders showed an increased strength over the standard nickel test samples of 26,000 to 66,800 psi which is in the range of 26 to 104% increase in strength over the base standard nickel. These latter test results are indicative of a volume percent wire reinforcement from 15 to 31. The measured hoop strengths agree with calculated composite strengths based upon rule of mixtures.

Effect of damper on overall and blade-element performance of a compressor rotor having a tip speed of 1151 feet per second and an aspect ratio of 3.6

The overall and blade-element performance of two configurations of a moderately high aspect ratio transonic compressor rotor are presented. The subject rotor has conventional blade dampers. The performance is compared with a rotor utilizing dual wire friction dampers. At design speed the subject achieved a pressure ratio of 1.52 and efficiency of 0.89 at a near design weight flow of 72.1 pounds per second. The rotor with wire dampers gave consistently higher pressure ratios at each speed, but efficiencies for the two rotors were about the same. Stall margin for the subject rotor was 20.4 percent, but for the wire damped rotor only 4.0 percent.

A study of forced flow separation in rocket nozzle

The characteristics of flow profile in a rocket nozzle during the start transient were investigated as well as possibilities of reducing the side-load thrust by sticking trip wires in the nozzle. To simplify the geometry of flow configuration around the trip wire, it was assumed that the flow is passing through square steps instead of round wires. Since a purely analytic solution is not available, a series of semiempirical solutions was proposed.

Solid state power controllers

Solid state power controllers (SSPC's) are to be considered for use as replacements of electromechanical relays and circuit breakers in future spacecraft and aircraft. They satisfy the combined function of both the relay and circuit breaker and can be remotely controlled by small signals, typically 10 mA, 5 to 28 v(dc). They have the advantage over conventional relay/circuit breaker systems in that they can be located near the utilization equipment and the primary ac or dc bus. The low level control, trip indication and status signals can be circuited by small gauge wire for control, computer interface, logic, electrical multiplexing, onboard testing, power management, and distribution purposes. This results in increased system versatility at appreciable weight saving and increased reliability. Conventional systems require the heavy gage load wiring and the control wiring to be routed from the bus to the load to other remote relay contacts, switches, sensors, etc. and to the circuit breaker located in the flight engineer's compartment for purposes of manual reset.

Developments in the large angle oblique jet impingement flow investigation

Single-wire (hot-wire) measurements are presented of the mean velocity and turbulence quantities near the impact plate for a 45-degree impingement flow responsible for acoustic noise production. These results are summarized along with the conclusions which shaped the subsequent direction of the study of large angle oblique jet impingement flow. The development of a unique signal processing circuit for finding the instantaneous transverse vorticity from an array of four hot-wires is discussed.
