A Lunar Farside Low Radio Frequency Array for Dark Ages 21-cm Cosmology

An array of low-frequency dipole antennas on the lunar farside surface will probe a unique, unexplored epoch in the early Universe called the Dark Ages. It begins at Recombination when neutral hydrogen atoms formed, first revealed by the cosmic microwave background. This epoch is free of stars and astrophysics, so it is ideal to investigate high energy particle processes including dark matter, early Dark Energy, neutrinos, and cosmic strings. A NASA-funded study investigated the design of the instrument and the deployment strategy from a lander of 128 pairs of antenna dipoles across a 10 kmx10 km area on the lunar surface. The antenna nodes are tethered to the lander for central data processing, power, and data transmission to a relay satellite. The array, named FARSIDE, would provide the capability to image the entire sky in 1400 channels spanning frequencies from 100 kHz to 40 MHz, extending down two orders of magnitude below bands accessible to ground-based radio astronomy. The lunar farside can simultaneously provide isolation from terrestrial radio frequency interference, the Earth's auroral kilometric radiation, and plasma noise from the solar wind. It is thus the only location within the inner solar system from which sky noise limited observations can be carried out at sub-MHz frequencies. Through precision calibration via an orbiting beacon and exquisite foreground characterization, the farside array would measure the Dark Ages global 21-cm signal at redshifts z~35-200. It will also be a pathfinder for a larger 21-cm power spectrum instrument by carefully measuring the foreground with high dynamic range.

A 4 x 4 SiPM Sensor Array with Fast Preamplified Output Engineered for the PWO Detectors of the EIC EEEMCAL

The PbWO4 scintillation detectors for the Electron-Ion Collider Electron Endcap Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EEEMCAL) cannot use vacuum photomultipler tubes due to the high magnetic field environment. We are presenting a readout solution with a 4 x 4 SiPM array directly coupled to a preamplification and summing stage. A second amplification stage with variable gain and offset adjustments is also included in the compact electronics module. The integrated power supply feeds the signal processing chain and the adjustable bias control. The parameter settings are saved locally on a EEPROM and are adjustable via the integrated communication interface through USB or RS485. The design was optimized to maximize signal collection energy resolution, for fast timing and wide dynamic range while keeping a small footprint with low power consumption and heat dissipation. The output response is fast enough to meet the 100 ? 200 ns digitization gate requirements for the detector. The electronics assembly requires no active cooling and includes a temperature sensor and a gain compensation of thermal variations which are important features for stable operation in large scale detector structures. A detector prototype was constructed with 20 mm x 20 mm x 200 mm PWO crystals affixed with individual SiPM array readouts and arranged in a 3 x 3 array. This detector was tested at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility with 5GeV positrons. We will present the results of these detector characterization measurements.

Models and Measurements Quantify Photon Recycling, Charge-Carrier Diffusion and Photon Scattering Contributions to Photoluminescence in InP Nanowire Arrays

Nanowire arrays present many unique advantages for solar-to-chemical energy conversion. One possible advantage is that photon recycling between neighboring nanowires has the potential to increase solar energy conversion efficiencies. Here, in this work, we explore three underlying mechanisms of optical and electronic coupling between neighboring nanowires─incident photon scattering, photon recycling, and charge-carrier transport from the photoexcited nanowire to the neighboring nanowire via the underlying substrate─using single nanowire-level microscopy and spectroscopy measurements. We present a comprehensive analysis of light absorption and emission of a single nanowire at open circuit, and subsequent re-absorption and re-emission by a neighboring nanowire. We developed a novel correlated single nanowire microspectroscopy and widefield imaging methodology to spatially resolve photon communication pathways between neighboring nanowires and selectively image re-emitted and reflected photons. We developed unique multiphysics models to couple wave optics and semiconductor photophysics to especially isolate contributions from photon recycling and electronic transport to photon emission from neighboring nanowires. By systematically varying the morphologies of the nanowires modeled, we identified pathways to maximize photon recycling between neighboring nanowires. We concluded that the measured photoluminescence is more strongly influenced by the diffusion of charge carriers as compared to photon recycling in materials with moderate-to-large charge-carrier mobilities (>10 cm 2 V –1 s –1 ), and that photon recycling dictates photoluminescence intensity only when the charge-carrier mobility is low (<1 cm 2 V –1 s –1 ). The experimental and simulation platforms developed herein for photon management strategies can be leveraged by the semiconductor photocatalysis community to enhance solar-to-chemical conversion efficiencies in semiconductor nanowire arrays.

Taguchi Experimental Design for Cleaning PWAs with Ball Grid Arrays

Ball grid arrays (BGAs), and other area array packages, are becoming more prominent as a way to increase component pin count while avoiding the manufacturing difficulties inherent in processing quad flat packs (QFPs)...Cleaning printed wiring assemblies (PWAs) with BGA components mounted on the surface is problematic...Currently, a low flash point semi-aqueous material, in conjunction with a batch cleaning unit, is being used to clean PWAs. The approach taken at JPL was to investigate the use of (1) semi-aqueous materials having a high flash point and (2) aqueous cleaning involving a saponifier.

TRACER Lightning Mapping Array Field Campaign Report

Our observational contribution to the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s Tracking Aerosol Convection Interactions Experiment (TRACER) was the deployment of additional Lightning Mapping Array sensors to provide enhanced capability to the Houston Lightning Mapping Array (HLMA) during the TRACER intensive operational period. To that end, the Texas Tech University personnel (Professor Bruning and Dr. Brunner, and graduate students Jessica Souza, David Singewald, Stephanie Weiss, and Matthew Miller) deployed two portable LMA antennae at locations G and B shown in the map below. The map also shows the predicted lightning flash detection efficiency in black contours, as well as color-shaded very-high-frequency (VHF) source detection efficiency, which roughly corresponds to the sensitivity to lightning channel detail.

A Glycan Array-Based Assay for the Identification and Characterization of Plant Glycosyltransferases

Growing plants with modified cell wall compositions is a promising strategy to improve resistance to pathogens, increase biomass digestibility, and tune other important properties. In order to alter biomass architecture, a detailed knowledge of cell wall structure and biosynthesis is a prerequisite. We report here a glycan array-based assay for the high-throughput identification and characterization of plant cell wall biosynthetic glycosyltransferases (GTs). We demonstrate that different heterologously expressed galactosyl-, fucosyl-, and xylosyltransferases can transfer azido-functionalized sugar nucleotide donors to selected synthetic plant cell wall oligosaccharides on the array and that the transferred monosaccharides can be visualized “on chip” by a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction with an alkynyl-modified dye. The opportunity to simultaneously screen thousands of combinations of putative GTs, nucleotide sugar donors, and oligosaccharide acceptors will dramatically accelerate plant cell wall biosynthesis research.

Microwave Multiplexing on the Keck Array

In this paper, we describe an on-sky demonstration of a microwave-multiplexing readout system in one of the receivers of the Keck Array, a polarimetry experiment observing the cosmic microwave background at the South Pole. During the austral summer of 2018–2019, we replaced the time-division multiplexing readout system with microwave-multiplexing components including superconducting microwave resonators coupled to radio frequency superconducting quantum interference devices at the sub-Kelvin focal plane, coaxial-cable plumbing and amplification between room temperature and the cold stages, and a SLAC Microresonator Radio Frequency system for the warm electronics. In the range 5–6 GHz, a single coaxial cable reads out 528 channels. The readout system is coupled to transition-edge sensors, which are in turn coupled to 150-GHz slot-dipole phased-array antennas. Observations began in April 2019, and we report here on an initial characterization of the system performance.

Design and Performance of the First BICEP Array Receiver

Branches of cosmic inflationary models, such as slow-roll inflation, predict a background of primordial gravitational waves that imprints a unique odd-parity “B-mode” pattern in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at amplitudes that are within experimental reach. The BICEP/Keck (BK) experiment targets this primordial signature, the amplitude of which is parameterized by the tensor-to-scalar ratio r, by observing the polarized microwave sky through the exceptionally clean and stable atmosphere at the South Pole. B-mode measurements require an instrument with exquisite sensitivity, tight control of systematics, and wide frequency coverage to disentangle the primordial signal from the Galactic foregrounds. BICEP Array represents the most recent stage of the BK program and comprises four BICEP3-class receivers observing at 30/40, 95, 150 and 220/270 GHz. The 30/40 GHz receiver will be deployed at the South Pole during the 2019/2020 austral summer. After 3 full years of observations with 30,000+ detectors, BICEP Array will measure primordial gravitational waves to a precision σ(r) between 0.002 and 0.004, depending on foreground complexity and the degree of lensing removal. Here in this paper, we give an overview of the instrument, highlighting the design features in terms of cryogenics, magnetic shielding, detectors and readout architecture as well as reporting on the integration and tests that are ongoing with the first receiver at 30/40 GHz.

Plastic Laminate Antireflective Coatings for Millimeter-Wave Optics in BICEP Array

The BICEP/Keck series of experiments target the cosmic microwave background at degree-scale resolution from the South Pole. Over the next few years, the “Stage-3” BICEP Array (BA) telescope will improve the program’s frequency coverage and sensitivity to primordial B-mode polarization by an order of magnitude. The first receiver in the array, BA1, began observing at 30/40 GHz in early 2020. The next two receivers, BA2 and BA3, are currently being assembled and will map the southern sky at frequencies ranging from 95 to 150 GHz. Common to all BA receivers is a refractive, on-axis, cryogenic optical design that focuses microwave radiation onto a focal plane populated with antenna-coupled bolometers. High-performance antireflective coatings up to 760 mm in aperture are needed for each element in the optical chain, and must withstand repeated thermal cycles down to 4 K. Here, in this work, we present the design and fabrication of the 30/40 GHz anti-reflection coatings for the recently deployed BA1 receiver, with indices matched to its various polyethylene, nylon and alumina optical components. We describe an epoxy coating technique designed for alumina optics, which achieves better than 80% transmission at room temperature. For polyethylene optical elements, we present a new heat-compression approach that allows low-density polytetrafluoroethylene AR layers to reach sub-percent reflected power. We describe the planned use of these methods for the next BA cryostats, which may inform technological choices for future small-aperture telescopes of the CMB-S4 experiment.
