Cloud Computing Option for Modeling the Debris Environment

NASA’s Digital Transformation Initiative aims to promote the agency’s adoption of current and evolving digital technologies. Through agency-wide collaboration with other NASA teams, the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance (OSMA) has directed the Orbital Debris Program Office and the Meteoroid Environment Office to integrate cloud computing technologies in their publicly released software models: the Orbital Debris Engineering Model (ORDEM) and the Meteoroid Engineering Model (MEM). Decoupling the user interface from the backend processor was key for the software packages to run on a cloud computing framework. Benefits to this design include horizontal scaling of computing resources, user authentication and authorization, and automated deployment. Both models are hosted on a cloud computing platform supported by the NASA authorized IT security and compliance framework. This paper focuses on the new ORDEM web application, which includes the current features of the publicly released ORDEM software with an upgraded frontend design. The underlying ORDEM processor is run on a cloud container, allowing the user to run multiple spacecraft and telescope/radar mode simulations. Featuresexclusive to the ORDEM web application, such as importing multiple TLEs, auto-generated plotting, and the ability to check runtime progress are discussed. Comparisons between the current ORDEM software and the web application are summarized.

Systems Level Fuel Cycle Modeling in TMAP8 - A Demonstration

The tritium migration analysis program (TMAP) has been used for tritium inventory tracking and analysis for several years, and the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE)-based TMAP8 has several improvements over TMAP4 and TMAP7, such as support for multiple dimensions and non-cartesian coordinate systems, as well as interoperability with sub-apps at higher and lower length scales. We demonstrate that TMAP8 has the additional capacity to solve systems-level problems using zero-dimensional ordinary differential equations by reproducing a literature model which describes a systems-level fuel-cycle of tritium inventory in a hypothetical fusion power plant. The capacity to run several coupled multi-scale physics calculations as part of a single package will be necessary for accurate blanket and fuel-cycle design.

Computer-aided surface representation and design

New methods for representing and approximating three and four dimensional surfaces were created. These schemes are the core of our forthcoming Surface Software Package. Surfaces are understood adequately only through the use of dynamic computer graphics; therefore, graphics capability is also included. The numerous applications of surface methods include modeling physical phenomena (e.g., combustion) and designing objects (e.g., airplanes and cars).

Implementation of a portable diagnostic system for Thomson scattering measurements on an electrothermal arc source

To fulfill the increasing needs of diagnostic support for researchers in plasma technology, a portable diagnostic package (PDP) equipped for both laser Thomson scattering (TS) and optical emission spectroscopy has been designed and constructed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), aiming to measure the temperature and number density of electrons and temperatures of ions in plasma devices. The PDP has been initially implemented on a high density and low temperature electrothermal arc source (ET-arc) at ORNL to test its TS capability. TS from the plasmas in the ET-arc has been obtained using the PDP. The electron temperature and number density were determined from TS spectra. These results were then compared to measurements from previous studies on the ET-arc. The TS diagnostic measured 0.8 ± 0.1, 1.3 ± 0.2, and 0.7 ± 0.1 eV and (4.4 ± 0.5) × 1021, (5.9 ± 0.7) × 1021, and (4.3 ± 0.5) x 1021 m-3, respectively, from three lines of sight that transect the plasma column.

srlife : a software tool for estimating the life of high temperature concentrating solar receivers. Part I – metallic receivers

Here, this paper introduces srlife, a tool for estimating the structural service life of concentrating solar power (CSP) receivers operating at high temperatures. Supporting both metallic and ceramic receiver designs, srlife is available as open-source software at https://github.com/applied-material-modeling/srlife and can be installed via the PyPi package manager (https://pypi.org). Given basic receiver geometry and incident heat flux, the tool performs thermohydraulic and structural analysis and estimates the life of a receiver. Designed for easy integration into a software stack, including solar field and levelized cost analysis, the tool can be utilized for optimizing receiver designs to meet service life and economic targets. This paper is Part I in a two-part series. Part I discusses the analysis process used to estimate the life of metallic receivers, along with a description of the required input data. Additionally, several heuristics applied within srlife can reduce analysis time significantly while maintaining accurate life estimations for metallic receivers when compared to full analyses. Several examples demonstrating the utility of srlife in receiver design are also discussed. Part II focuses on the life estimation of ceramic receivers, using time-dependent reliability analysis and various ceramic failure models implemented in srlife.

SIR Glass Test Vehicle Designed to Characterize Process Materials

The exposure to harsh environments can result in reliability issues on highly dense electronic packages and circuit assemblies. One area of concern is electrochemical failure mechanisms caused by electrolytic corrosion, electrochemical migration (dendrites), and leakage currents under humid conditions. These no-fault and no-trouble found failure points are challenging to detect and to perform process control during the assembly process. The focus of this research centers on metallizing glass surface insulation resistance test vehicles to characterize materials on electronic packages and components that exhibit the highest risk of failure due to material interactions and process residues. Glass test vehicles provide a visual representation of materials when they are exposed to moisture content in the air. Harsh environments can cause material interactions resulting in morphology changes, opening, and release of active components. A transparent test vehicle is highly functional for environmental stress testing under temperature, humidity, and bias. The designed experiment will evaluate the effects of material and process residues that can undergo changes in behavior during application, which leads to local failures.

Commerical application of rocket engine turbopump technology

This paper describes how commercial pump technology was modified for rocket engine application by trading long life for low weight. The component life of typical turbopump components is presented, and the modes of failure will be discussed. A comparison of the basic commercial and rocket engine pump requirements such as flow, pressure, etc. is made. It is concluded that rocket engine pump technology can be applied directly only if similar basic requirements exist in emergency or stand-by equipment. The specific design requirements for rocket engine turbopumps are presented and the need for high speeds is explained by the weight-speed relationship and the optimum NPSH of the tank and pump system. The trend of required rocket engine pump discharge pressure and future operational requirements is predicted. The need for inducers and boost pumps in rocket engines is explained, and the results of the flat-plate-inducer cavitation therein are briefly presented. Design solutions and material selections for high-pressure pump housings, ultra-high tip speed impellers, and pump packaging are demonstrated. As a typical example of utilizing rocket engine technology for commercial application, a helicopter stand-by engine i shown. This standby engine is designed from existing rocket engine components, using JATO rockets as the prime energy source.

OC7 Phase I Definition Document

The Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration 7 (OC7) project is organized under the International Energy Agency Wind Technology Collaboration Programme Task 56 with an objective to evaluate and enhance the predictive accuracy of engineering-level modeling tools used in the design of offshore wind energy systems. Phase I of OC7 is focused on improving the models and modeling practices of hydrodynamic viscous loads on floating offshore wind turbine platforms. In alignment with this goal, Work Package 1.1 of OC7 Phase I is formulated to investigate the modeling of hydrodynamic viscous loads on several different geometric components commonly encountered with floating offshore wind platform designs, including cylindrical columns, heave plates, and rectangular pontoons. Work Package 1.1 also explores the dependence of hydrodynamic coefficients on the sea state to drive toward practical guidance on how these coefficients can be selected or adjusted for different conditions. This report outlines the motivation and objectives behind each subphase of OC7 Phase I, along with the necessary technical specifications and load case definitions to guide the project participants. It also serves as an important part of the project documentation for future modelers who would like to reproduce this work or make use of the data and information generated from the OC7 project.
