Rapid Atomic Ordering Transformation toward Intermetallic Nanoparticles

Chemically ordered intermetallic nanoparticles are promising candidates for energy-related applications such as electrocatalysis. However, the synthesis of intermetallics generally requires long annealing (several hours) to achieve the ordered structure, which causes nanoparticles agglomeration and diminished performance, particularly for catalysis. Herein, we demonstrate a new rapid Joule heating approach that can synthesize highly ordered and well-dispersed intermetallic nanoparticles. As a proof-of-concept, we synthesized fully ordered Pd 3 Pb intermetallic nanoparticles that feature small size distribution (~6 nm). Computational analysis of the L1 2 Pd 3 Pb material suggests that this rapid atomic ordering transformation can be attributed to a vacancy-mediated diffusion mechanism. Moreover, the nanoparticles demonstrate excellent electrocatalytic activity and exceptional stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), retaining >95% of the current density over 10 h of chronoamperometry test with negligible structural and compositional changes. Furthermore, this study demonstrates a new strategy of providing a new direction for intermetallic synthesis and catalyst discovery.

Surmounting the interband threshold limit by the hot electron excitation of multi-metallic plasmonic AgAuCu NPs for UV photodetector application

We report multi-metallic alloy NPs composed of various elemental compositions can surmount the interband threshold limit of mono-metallic NPs and thus can offer a promising route to boost up the performance limit of conventional ultraviolet photodetectors (PDs). In this work, a hybrid UV-PD configuration has been demonstrated by combining the multi-metallic plasmonic alloy NPs of AgCu, AuCu, and AgAuCu on a GaN photoactive layer in order to exploit the improved photo carrier injection by the strong hot electrons and LSPR. Among various devices, the tri-metallic AgAuCu NP PD demonstrates the highest performance with a remarkably high photocurrent of 1.47 x 10 -2 A at 1 V with fast rise (T r ) and fall (T f ) times of 170 and 700 ms with a very stable current. This leads to the superior figure-of-merit parameters of the PD with a photoresponsivity of 4.3 x 10 6 mA W-1, detectivity of 3.52 x 10 12 Jones and EQE of 1.39 x 10 6 %, which is ~16 times higher than the bare GaN PD. This ranks the AgAuCu PD as one of the best GaN based UV photodetectors. The photocurrent enhancement and excellent figure-of-merit can be attributed to the significantly increased photo carrier injection by the efficient hot electron generation via the LSPR and improved interfacial barrier characteristics by the tri-metallic elemental synergy.

Influence of Hydrogen Isotopes on Vacancy Formation and Antisite Defect Diffusion in Palladium and Vanadium Metals

Density functional theory calculations are performed to study the interaction between hydrogen isotopes, vacancy, and antisite defects in Pd and V. Various defect configurations and defect-defect distances are systematically explored. Binding energies and migration energy barriers are calculated and tabulated. The study provides atomistic data for subsequent mesoscale simulations of tritium, vacancy, and antisite diffusion. In Pd, a strong binding is found between a vacancy and tritium (0.16 eV). This tritium binding increases the thermal concentration of vacancies by a factor of ~10 at 500 ?C. The increase in vacancy concentration enhances V antisite diffusion in Pd by a factor of ~6 at 500 ?C. The influence of tritium is even stronger in V, with a tritium and vacancy binding energy of 0.38 eV. Such a strong binding increases the thermal concentration of vacancies by a factor of ~300 at 500 ?C. The increase in vacancy concentration enhances Pd antisite diffusion in V by a factor of ~640 at 500 ?C. Vanadium and Pd exhibit a strong driving force to intermix with a formation energy of -1.57 eV for V antisite in Pd and -1.05 eV for Pd antisite in V. The results suggest vanadium diffusion into Pd is energetically stronger than the reverse. Zero-point-energy corrections are taken into account and calculations for hydrogen and tritium are presented.
