On a new algorithm for time step integration of nonlinear systems

A new implicit algorithm for time step integration of finite element structural dynamic equations is presented. Convergence, stability and numerical damping properties are discussed. Due to the way nonlinear structural behavior is taken into account, the algorithm is expected to compare favorably with existing ones. Some simple numerical results are presented. A related explicit algorithm is also derived and shortly discussed.

Guidance of Nonlinear Systems

The paper describes a method for guiding a dynamic system through a given set of points. The paradigm is a fully automatic aircraft subject to air traffic control (ATC). The ATC provides a sequence of way points through which the aircraft trajectory must pass. The way points typically specify time, position, and velocity. The guidance problem is to synthesize a system state trajectory which satisfies both the ATC and aircraft constraints. Complications arise because the controlled process is multi-dimensional, multi-axis, nonlinear, highly coupled, and the state space is not flat. In addition, there is a multitude of possible operating modes, which may number in the hundreds. Each such mode defines a distinct state space model of the process by specifying the state space coordination, the partition of the controls into active controls and configuration controls, and the output map. Furthermore, mode transitions must be smooth. The guidance algorithm is based on the inversion of the pure feedback approximations, which is followed by iterative corrections for the effects of zero dynamics. The paper describes the structure and modules of the algorithm, and the performance is illustrated by several example aircraft maneuvers.

The effects of stimulated star formation on the evolution of the galaxy. III - The chemical evolution of nonlinear systems

The evolution of models for star formation in galaxies with disk and halo components is discussed. Two phases for the halo (gas and stars) and three for the disk (including clouds) are used in these calculations. The star-formation history is followed using nonlinear phase-coupling models which completely determine the populations of the phases as a function of time. It is shown that for a wide range of parameters, including the effects of both spontaneous and stimulated star formation and mass exchange between the spatial components of the system, the observed chemical history of the galaxy can easily be obtained. The most sensitive parameter in the detailed metallicity and star-formation history for the system is the rate of return of gas to the diffuse phase upon stellar death.

Closed-loop control of stochastic nonlinear systems

Technique resolves problems in complex control systems, such as those used for space vehicle guidance and control. Main disadvantage of procedure is that it is only appropriate in situations where trajectory concept is valid.

Implicit numerical integration for periodic solutions of autonomous nonlinear systems

A change of variables that stabilizes numerical computations for periodic solutions of autonomous systems is derived. Computation of the period is decoupled from the rest of the problem for conservative systems of any order and for any second-order system. Numerical results are included for a second-order conservative system under a suddenly applied constant load. Near the critical load for the system, a small increment in load amplitude results in a large increase in amplitude of the response.

Control of nonlinear systems using terminal sliding modes

The development of an approach to control synthesis for robust robot operations in unstructured environments is discussed. To enhance control performance with full model information, the authors introduce the notion of terminal convergence and develop control laws based on a class of sliding modes, denoted as terminal sliders. They demonstrate that terminal sliders provide robustness to parametric uncertainty without having to resort to high-frequency control switching, as in the case of conventional sliders. It is shown that the proposed method leads to greater guaranteed precision in all control cases discussed.
