Nylon-11 Nanowires Embedded in Flexible Substrates for Piezoelectric Transducers

Nylon-11 nanowires have been fabricated in flexible track-etched polymer templates. Customized fabrication equipment was employed to realize an air-flow and gravity assisted template-wetting synthesis technique. X-ray diffraction analysis suggests that the strength of the piezoelectric phase of the nanowire crystals is directly proportional to the air-flow.

Preflight Definition and Verification Testing for the Plant Habitat-07 Experiment to Study Substrate Moisture Impacts on Lettuce Plant and Microbiome Development

Delivering adequate water and oxygen to root zones of crops growing in microgravity is challenging due to the complex behavior of fluids and gasses during spaceflight. Chronic excess (flood) or insufficient (drought) water levels, or intermittent watering and wilting of plants, leads to alterations in plant growth and impacts on the nutritional and microbial composition of those plants. PH-07 will apply controlled water stress to assess and quantify changes in plant growth and the microbiome of a well-tested food crop, ‘Outredgeous’ red romaine lettuce, grown in NASA’s Advanced Plant Habitat (APH) on the ISS.

Quantitative substrate utilization in microbial ecology using stable isotope probing

Methods modifying conventional SIP so that isotopic incorporation into the genomes of individual microbial taxa can be quantified are described. Further, methods to quantify the baseline densities of the DNA of individual microbial taxa without exposure to isotope tracers and then to quantify the change in DNA density of each taxon caused by isotope incorporation are described. The distribution of DNA of each taxon along a density gradient reflects the influence of isotope incorporation only, without reflecting the guanine-plus-cytosine content.

Foil deposition onto an additive manufactured substrate

An additive manufacturing system and method for forming a part of dissimilar materials. The additive manufacturing system may include a build platform, a recoater for dispensing build powder onto the build platform, an energy source, a foil feed assembly, and a controller for controlling actuation of these components. The method of forming the part may include the steps of depositing a layer of build powder onto the build platform surface, melting selected portions of the layer of build powder, applying a sheet of foil over the layer of build powder, melting selected portions of the sheet of foil onto the layer of build powder, removing the sheet of foil from the layer of build powder, and then lowering the build platform surface to prepare for deposition of a next layer of the build powder. These steps are then repeated one or more times, thereby forming the part.
