Programming effort analysis of the ELLPACK language

ELLPACK is a problem statement language and system for elliptic partial differential equations which is implemented by a FORTRAN preprocessor. ELLPACK's principal purpose is as a tool for the performance evaluation of software. However, it is used here as an example with which to study the programming effort required for problem solving. It is obvious that problem statement languages can reduce programming effort tremendously; the goal is to quantify this somewhat. This is done by analyzing the lengths and effort (as measured by Halstead's software science technique) of various approaches to solving these problems.

Diode step stress program for JANTX1N4570A

The effect of power/temperature step stress when applied to a variety of semiconductor devices was evaluated. Performance of the zener diode JANTX1N4570A manufactured by Siemens and Motorola is reported. A total of 48 samples from each manufacturer was submitted to the process outlined in Table 1. In addition, two control sample units were maintained for verification of the electrical parametric testing.

On-board Attitude Determination System (OADS)

The requirements, capabilities and system design for an on-board attitude determination system (OADS) to be flown on advanced spacecraft missions were determined. Based upon the OADS requirements and system performance evaluation, a preliminary on-board attitude determination system is proposed. The proposed OADS system consists of one NASA Standard IRU (DRIRU-2) as the primary attitude determination sensor, two improved NASA Standard star tracker (SST) for periodic update of attitude information, a GPS receiver to provide on-board space vehicle position and velocity vector information, and a multiple microcomputer system for data processing and attitude determination functions. The functional block diagram of the proposed OADS system is shown. The computational requirements are evaluated based upon this proposed OADS system.

Generalized computer-aided discrete time domain modeling and analysis of dc-dc converters

A generalized discrete time domain modeling and analysis technique is presented for all types of switching regulators using any type of duty-cycle controller, and operating in both continuous and discontinuous inductor current. State space techniques are employed to derive an equivalent nonlinear discrete time model that describes the converter exactly. The system is linearized about its equilibrium state to obtain a linear discrete time model for small signal performance evaluations, such as stability, audiosusceptibility and transient response. The analysis makes extensive use of the digital computer as an analytical tool. It is universal, exact and easy to use.

A sensitivity analysis for the F100 turbofan engine using the multivariable Nyquist array

In the feedback control design of multivariable systems, closed loop performance evaluations must include the dynamic behavior of variables unavailable to the feedback controller. For the multivariable Nyquist array method, a set of sensitivity functions are proposed to simplify the adjustment of compensator parameters when the dynamic response of the unmeasurable output variables is unacceptable. A sensitivity study to improve thrust and turbine temperature responses for the Pratt-Whitney F100 turbofan engine demonstrates the utility of the proposed method.

Collector testing in the MSFC simulator

The Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Sun simulator and collector testing techniques are described herein. Details of simulator construction are given along with actual measured simulation performance characteristics. Initial comparative performance data from selected air and liquid collector tests are presented for both indoor simulator tests and outdoor tests. These data indicate exceptionally good collector efficiency correlations between the two tests. Comparisons prove sufficiently the validity of using the MSFC simulator for nonconcentration flat plate collector configuration performance evaluations.

Optimal local control of flexible structures

The steady state solution of the linear quadratic optimal control problem with the constraint that only partial state information is available for feedback is derived. This development results in a systematic and computationally efficient approach for reducing the complexity of the control law for high order systems. Numerical examples and performance evaluation of (1) a simple fourth order system, and (2) a free-free flexible beam, are included.

Installation and checkout of the DOE/NASA Mod-1 2000-kW wind turbine generator

The Mod-1 machine was assembled without the blades, tested, and sent to the site at Boone, North Carolina for erection. The blades were transported directly to the site. A series of checkout tests were then conducted to evaluate performance and loads. The results of these tests compared well with the design data.

OMNIUM-G concentrator test results

A performance evaluation was conducted on a commercially available point-focus solar concentrator, the Heliodyne model HTC-25s tracker/concentrator. Thermal power test results indicate that slightly more than six kilowatts of thermal energy is available from a system of this configuration using a 10 cm aperture.

Performance analysis for collector-side reflector systems

The F-Chart method of solar collector performance evaluation is extended to a flat-plate collector system augmented with planar side reflectors. The modified F-Chart evaluations show that the augmentation of the collector has approximately the effect of increasing the collector area by 60%, and the energy supplied by the collector better matches the load. The installed reflector cost of about 10% of the collector cost is shown to be well justified.

Stabilization and control of the International Ultraviolet Explorer including a summary of flight performance

The paper discusses the International Ultraviolet Explorer Mission sequence, spacecraft equipment, and control laws. Flight data from the precision control modes are presented, to illustrate the performance achieved; the subarc second pointing at sources for 60 min periods is accomplished routinely. Two modes of precision control are available: one is of a bright guide star which is in the vicinity of the target source, so that the guidance mode includes a star tracker for position information and a gyro system for rate damping. When a guide star is not available, precision hold is accomplished solely on a well trimmed gyro reference with low frequency updates from a dim source. The three axis maneuvers, the maneuver angle, and the gyro data used are discussed, concluding that these data used in conjunction with star tracker data provide a good source of information for orbital performance evaluation.
