Tunable angle-dependent electrochemistry at twisted bilayer graphene with moiré flat bands

Tailoring electron transfer dynamics across solid–liquid interfaces is fundamental to the interconversion of electrical and chemical energy. Stacking atomically thin layers with a small azimuthal misorientation to produce moiré superlattices enables the controlled engineering of electronic band structures and the formation of extremely flat electronic bands. Here, we report a strong twist-angle dependence of heterogeneous charge transfer kinetics at twisted bilayer graphene electrodes with the greatest enhancement observed near the ‘magic angle’ (~1.1°). Furthermore, this effect is driven by the angle-dependent tuning of moiré-derived flat bands that modulate electron transfer processes with the solution-phase redox couple. Combined experimental and computational analysis reveals that the variation in electrochemical activity with moiré angle is controlled by a structural relaxation of the moiré superlattice at twist angles of <2°, and ‘topological defect’ AA stacking regions, where flat bands are localized, produce a large anomalous local electrochemical enhancement that cannot be accounted for by the elevated local density of states alone.

Magnetoelastic standing waves induced in UO 2 by microsecond magnetic field pulses

Significance UO 2 is of particular interest due to its use as a nuclear fuel, its unusually poor thermal conductivity, and its uniquely strong magnetoelastic properties characterized by a linear coupling between strain and magnetization. We clearly observe mechanical standing waves and elastic resonances in a single crystal, induced by microsecond magnetic field pulses. The phase and amplitude of the mechanical resonances are modulated by the piezomagnetic switching behavior, offering a sensitive probe for otherwise hard to detect magnetic dynamics in UO 2 . We highlight the importance of magnetic domains in the attenuation of the mechanical resonances and the robustness of the antiferromagnetic state in UO 2 against externally applied magnetic fields to 150 T.

The quality control programme for ITk strip tracker module assembly

The assembly of the ATLAS Inner Tracker requires the construction of 19,000 silicon strip sensor detector modules in eight different geometries. Modules will be assembled and tested at 31 institutes on four continents from sensors, readout chips, and flexes. In order to adhere to the module specifications defined for sufficient tracking performance, a rigorous programme of quality control (QC) was established to cover components at every stage of assembly. Here, this contribution presents an overview of the QC programme for ITk strip tracker modules, issues encountered during the pre-production phase (5% of the production volume), and their solutions.

Interleaved Cuk Converter Wave Energy System With Advanced Control and Grid Support Functions for Seamless Integration

This paper presents an innovative wave energy conversion system that integrates an interleaved Cuk converter with advanced nonlinear control for seamless grid integration. The system efficiently extracts power on the DC side using the interleaved Cuk converter, while an inverter manages power transfer to the grid or load on the AC side. A nonlinear control architecture, based on the Lyapunov energy function, ensures stable and optimal operation under varying wave conditions, effectively addressing the challenges of variability and unpredictability inherent in wave energy. The proposed system also incorporates features to enhance power quality and minimize losses, making it a robust solution for renewable energy integration. The system's effectiveness in harnessing wave energy and achieving smooth grid integration is validated through comprehensive computer simulations in MATLAB/Simulink, with case study results demonstrating its capabilities.

LandRAY Final Report

The overarching Project objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of using an innovative Power Take-Off (PTO) Module, to be used in the Columbia Power Technologies, Inc. (C·Power) utility-scale wave energy converter (WEC). The PTO Module uniquely combines a large-diameter, direct-drive, rotary permanent magnet generator; a patent-pending rail-bearing system; and a corrosion-resistant fiber-reinforced-plastic structure. The rail bearing system allows for: • A flexible non-rigid and low-cost generator frame as compared to conventional machines. • A reduction of air gap and consequently lower cost electromagnetic design • Ability to reduce costs by increasing diameter to much larger dimensions, while maintaining the small air gap. • A direct drive electro-mechanical solution that is the fastest and most precise approach for responding to the dynamic variability of forces from wave energy. The land-based test of the PTO Module (DDP1) will provide an important risk reduction phase, to demonstrate the reliability and feasibility of a large-diameter, small air-gap generator that is capable of delivering high efficiency, fault-tolerance and relatively simple "at-sea" maintenance capabilities – qualities that are essential for cost-effective wave energy devices. This is the first known test of such a system.

Physicochemical characterization and source apportionment of Arctic ice-nucleating particles observed in Ny-Ålesund in autumn 2019

Abstract. Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) initiate primary ice formation in Arctic mixed-phase clouds (MPCs), altering cloud radiative properties and modulating precipitation. For atmospheric INPs, the complexity of their spatiotemporal variations, heterogeneous sources, and evolution via intricate atmospheric interactions challenge the understanding of their impact on microphysical processes in Arctic MPCs and induce an uncertain representation in climate models. In this work, we performed a comprehensive analysis of atmospheric aerosols at the Arctic coastal site in Ny-Ålesund (Svalbard, Norway) from October to November 2019, including their ice nucleation ability, physicochemical properties, and potential sources. Overall, INP concentrations (NINP) during the observation season were approximately up to 3 orders of magnitude lower compared to the global average, with several samples showing degradation of NINP after heat treatment, implying the presence of proteinaceous INPs. Particle fluorescence was substantially associated with INP concentrations at warmer ice nucleation temperatures, indicating that in the far-reaching Arctic, aerosols of biogenic origin throughout the snow- and ice-free season may serve as important INP sources. In addition, case studies revealed the links between elevated NINP and heat lability, fluorescence, high wind speeds originating from the ocean, augmented concentration of coarse-mode particles, and abundant organics. Backward trajectory analysis demonstrated a potential connection between high-latitude dust sources and high INP concentrations, while prolonged air mass history over the ice pack was identified for most scant INP cases. The combination of the above analyses demonstrates that the abundance, physicochemical properties, and potential sources of INPs in the Arctic are highly variable despite its remote location.

Observations of Cygnus X-3 by ANS

The hard X-ray experiment (1 - 28 keV) on ANS observed Cygnus X-3 in November 1974, and in May 1975. The average flux intensities for these time periods were found to be 22.4 + or - 0.5 cts/sec and 12.8 + or - 0.3 cts/sec (1.3 - 7.1 keV), the former being the highest average value ever observed. The spectrum studies show an excess in the flux above the fitted continuum which can be interpreted as a line emission of FeXXIV and/or FeXXV, at approximately 6.5 keV. The strength of this feature varied in phase with the 4.8 hr X-ray modulation, and remained at a constant relative intensity. The period of the X-ray modulation is refined to 0.1996813 + or - 0.0000006 day and obtained at a 2 sigma upper limit to a continuous change in the period of 50 to the minus 13th power/sec. This new limit places serious constraints on several models for this object.

Test and evaluation of the Navy half-watt RTG

The radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) considered is to provide a continuous minimum power output of 0.5 watt at 6.0 to 8.5 volts for a minimum period of 15 years. The mechanical-electrical evaluation phase discussed involved the conduction of shock and vibration tests. The thermochemical-physical evaluation phase consisted of an analysis of the materials and the development of a thermal model. The thermoelectric evaluation phase included the accelerated testing of the thermoelectric modules.

Static inverter with synchronous output waveform synthesized by time-optimal-response feedback

Time-optimal-response 'bang-bang' or 'bang-hang' technique, using four feedback control loops, synthesizes static-inverter sinusoidal output waveform by self-oscillatory but yet synchronous pulse-frequency-modulation (SPFM). A single modular power stage per phase of ac output entails the minimum of circuit complexity while providing by feedback synthesis individual phase voltage regulation, phase position control and inherent compensation simultaneously for line and load disturbances. Clipped sinewave performance is described under off-limit load or input voltage conditions. Also, approaches to high power levels, 3-phase arraying and parallel modular connection are given.

The modular power subsystem for the multimission modular spacecraft

The block diagram, subsystems, and components of the modular power subsystem for the multimission modular spacecraft (MMS) are described. The basic design studies were guided by considerations of cost, efficiency, simplicity, and flexibility to serve a variety of missions. Components discussed are the power regulator unit, the power control unit, the signal conditioning assembly, bus protection assembly, and the 20 Ah and 50 Ah batteries. The plan for the modular power subsystem protoflight module tests is shown. The testing has four phases: (1) component level tests, (2) subsystem integration and initial performance test, (3) subsystem protoflight environmental tests, and (4) subsystem final performance tests, qualification/acceptance review and delivery.

Modulation/demodulation techniques for satellite communications. Part 4: Appendices

The use of the Viterbi algorithm in a general context is examined. The generalized transfer function bounds are given which permit the following applications to be carried out: maximum likelihood demodulation of such bandwidth modulations as minimum-shift-keying and continuous phase frequency-shift-keying, demodulation of intersymbol interference and partial response signals, estimation and smoothing, and simultaneous phase synchronization, and data detection. Sufficient conditions are reviewed for tightening Chernoff and Rhattacharyya bounds.

Microchannel spatial light modulator

The Microchannel Spatial Light Modulator (MSLM), a versatile, highly sensitive, and optically addressed device being developed for real time optical information processing is discussed. The MSLM operates by converting an input optical image into a charge distribution at the surface of an electro-optic crystal. The charge distribution generates an electric field which modulates the refractive index of the crystal and thereby the phase or intensity of an image readout beam. Prototype devices employing 250 micron thick crystals exhibited a spatial resolution of 5 cycles/mm at 50% contrast, an exposure sensitivity of 2.2 nJ/cu cm and framing rates of 40 Hz with full modulation depth. The image processing operations that have been achieved using the internal processing mode of the MSLM include contrast reversal, contrast enhancement, edge enhancement, image addition and subtraction, analog and digital intensity thresholding, and binary level logic operations such as AND, OR, EXCLUSIVE OR, and NOR.

Uses of infrared thermography in the low-cost solar array program

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory has used infrared thermography extensively in the Low-Cost Solar Array (LSA) photovoltaics program. A two-dimensional scanning infrared radiometer has been used to make field inspections of large free-standing photovoltaic arrays and smaller demonstration sites consisting of integrally mounted rooftop systems. These field inspections have proven especially valuable in the research and early development phases of the program, since certain types of module design flaws and environmental degradation manifest themselves in unique thermal patterns. The infrared camera was also used extensively in a series of laboratory tests on photovoltaic cells to obtain peak cell temperatures and thermal patterns during off-design operating conditions. The infrared field inspections and the laboratory experiments are discussed, and sample results are presented.
