Cloud acceleration by cosmic rays in the vicinity of compact luminous objects

Nonrelativistic cosmic rays from a central source exert an outward pressure on the surrounding gas in a Seyfert nucleus or the envelope of a quasi-stellar object. This force is different from radiation pressure in that the momentum transfer to the gas is enhanced rather than reduced when the gas is ionized. Calculations are presented to show that particle energy flux comparable to observed photon luminosities will accelerate gas clouds as large as 100,000 solar masses to velocities on the order of 0.1c in the presence of a central mass of 100 million solar masses.

Compact prosthetic hand

Device combines tilt, wrist-rotation, and grasping mechanisms in single housing. Main body is about 15 centimeters long and 7.5 centimeters wide. Reduced weight and increased flexibility result from redesign and rearrangement of components.

Analysis of regenerated single-shaft ceramic gas-turbine engines and resulting fuel economy in a compact car

Ranges in design and off-design operating conditions of an advanced gas turbine and their effects on fuel economy were analyzed. The assumed engine incorporated a single stage radial flow turbine and compressor with fixed geometry. Fuel economies were calculated over the composite driving cycle with gasoline as the fuel. At a constant turbine-inlet temperature, with a regenerator sized for a full power effectiveness the best fuel economies ranged from 11.1 to 10.2 km/liter (26.2 to 22.5 mpg) for full power turbine tip speeds of 770 to 488m/sec (2530 to 1600ft/sec), respectively.

Recognition of compact astrophysical objects

NASA's Laboratory for High Energy Astrophysics and the Dept. of Physics and Astrophysics at the Univ. of Md. collaberated on a graduate level course with this title. This publication is an edited version of notes used as the course text. Topics include stellar evolution, pulsars, binary stars, X-ray signatures, gamma ray sources, and temporal analysis of X-ray data.

8 to 13 micrometer spectrophotometry of compact sources in W3

Three infrared and radio sources in W3 (continuum) and one in W3(OH) have been observed with 1% spectral resolution. Three sources show deep silicate absorption features; the remaining source shows little silicate absorption and has three emission lines. One source, IRS 5, has the deepest silicate absorption known and can be used to determine the wavelength dependence of silicate extinction. Such properties of the sources as dust masses and luminosities are discussed.

Compact bypass-flow filter

Annular filter consisting of stacked rings separates particulates from bypass fluid passing through it in radial direction without slowing down main flow across unimpeded flow of fluid through its center. Applications include fluidized bed reactors, equipment for catalyst operations, and water purification.

Compact sources of EUV radiation

Contrary to classical theoretical expectations extreme ultraviolet emissions from a number of stellar objects have been recently discovered. A combined EUV and optical study of these sources has revealed a wealth of new information on stellar structure and evolution especially for what regards the transition stage between planetary nebulae and white dwarfs. The current status of research in this field is reviewed with emphasis on the impact these observations are having on our view of the later stages of stellar evolution and on the future possibility that could be awaiting a sensitive all sky survey of the EUV spectrum.

The compact radio sources in 4C 39.25 and 3C 345

Long-baseline interferometry of the quasars 4C 39.25 and 3C 345 at 10.65 and 14.77 GHz shows that the centimeter radio source in each object is double, with component separations of 0.0020 arcsec (4C 39.25) and 0.0013 arcsec (3C 345 at 1974.5). For each source, the separation is the same at both frequencies, as well as similar to the structure observed at 7.85 GHz (and 5.0 GHz for 4C 39.25). The spectra of the individual components are derived and shown to vary with time approximately as expected for expanding self-absorbed synchrotron sources. The magnetic fields in the components are estimated to be as high as 0.1 gauss, but the structure of the sources appears to be unrelated to the magnetic-field orientation derived from low-resolution polarization measurements. The component separation in 4C 39.25 has not changed for several years, whereas 3C 345 shows rapid expansion.

Compact electron-beam source for formation of neutral beams of very low vapor pressure materials

In order to form metal vapors for neutral beam studies, an electron-beam heater and a power supply have been designed. The source, which measures about 30 x 50 x 70 mm, consists of a filament, accelerating plate (defined by pole pieces), and a supported target. The electrons from the filament are focused by the field penetration through a 2 mm slit in the high-voltage cage. They are then accelerated to about 5 kV to a ground plate. The electrons then follow a path in the magnetic field and strike the sample to be heated on its front surface. The assembly is attached to a water-cooled base plate. The electron beam source has produced beams of Ta and C particles with densities of about 10 to the 8th power/cu cm.
