Framework for Supporting Adaptive Droop Based Power Electronic Systems

The electric grid is evolving into an electrical network composed of power electronic converters interconnected with renewable and energy storage technologies. This requires the adoption of more advanced control such as volt/var regulation, fast frequency control, and active power frequency response. This work presents a communication and control framework to support dynamically changing droop control segments that can be used for different optimization schemes. Results are presented to work in a controller hardware in the loop testbed.

Power Electronics Thermal Management

The 2017 Electrical and Electronics Technical Team Roadmap [11] proposes aggressive research and development targets aimed at improving power electronics technology to enable the mass-market penetration of electric-drive vehicles. Achieving these aggressive targets will require a decrease in cost (year 2025 cost target: $2.70/kW) and an increase in power density (year 2025 power density target: 100 kW/L) as compared with current on-road technology. Replacing traditional silicon device-based components with more efficient and higher-temperature wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductor device-based components will enable increased power density. However, meeting the power density target will also require innovative thermal management solutions to increase the heat fluxes dissipated and allow for compact electronics packaging. This project evaluates, designs, and develops thermal management strategies that use dielectric fluid (single-phase heat transfer) as coolants.

Electronic power generators for ultrasonic frequencies

The design and construction of an ultrasonic frequency electronic power generator are discussed. The principle design elements of the generator are illustrated. The generator provides an inductive load with an output power of two kilowatts and a variable output frequency in the fifteen to thirty KiloHertz range. The method of conducting the tests and the results obtained with selected materials are analyzed.

An Intelligent Power Electronic System for Secondary Use Batteries

This paper presents a plug-and-play power electronic system for integration of multiple energy storage system technologies. The system uses a communication and control architecture with individual developed modules to support scaling to larger systems for the electric grid. An optimization framework is also presented to demonstrate the functionality of the system. This system is shown to work in hardware with a constructed testbed to demonstrate different use cases and systems. Results are presented for a full efficiency cycle test.

Megawatt-Class, High-Voltage SiC Power Electronics Converters for Advanced Manufacturing with Grid Support Services

DE-EE0009135 aimed to push the 10kV SiC MOSFET based power electronics to 3-phase 13.8kV 10MW to be used as a Megawatt Class Medium-Voltage Power Conditioning Systems – PCS – to enable “Resilient Distribution through Grid-dispatching and Uninterrupted Quality Power to Manufacturing Facilities” during transitory grid disturbances. As a stretch to those goals, Eaton added the load power peak shaving opportunity.

Agent-Based Framework for Supporting Behind the Meter Transactive Power Electronic Systems

In this paper, the concept of a framework based on an agent-based interface for power stages in a power electronic system is presented. The presented concept or agent system is able to consider any number of different types of sources, types of converters, communication protocols, embedded decision making to support transactive, and hierarchy for large system integration. The concept is presented through several examples including the implementation on an actual physical system and demonstration of transactive type controls.

A Physics-Aligned Multi-Domain Machine Learning Framework for Time-Localised Diagnosis of Power Electronics Faults

This paper presents a physics-aligned framework for fault diagnosis in multi-phase power-electronic systems using cycle-synchronous windowing and multi-domain features derived from Fourier, wavelet, and Hilbert–Huang representations. While both logistic regression and multilayer perceptron (MLP) models achieve perfect performance under standard evaluation, blind unseen testing reveals a critical failure in a baseline MLP. This is shown to arise from model selection based on validation accuracy. Using validation-loss-based selection restores correct unseen performance and improves confidence. Feature ablation shows that Fourier and wavelet features dominate, while computational analysis indicates that feature extraction, particularly HHT, governs runtime.

Preliminary Performance Data on Westinghouse Electronic Power Regulator Operating on J34-WE-32 Turbojet Engine in Altitude Wind Tunnel

The behavior of the Westinghouse electronic power regulator operating on a J34-WE-32 turbojet engine was investigated in the NACA Lewis altitude wind tunnel at the request of the Bureau of Aeronautics, Department of the Navy. The object of the program was to determine the, steady-state stability and transient characteristics of the engine under control at various altitudes and ram pressure ratios, without afterburning. Recordings of the response of the following parameters to step changes in power lever position throughout the available operating range of the engine were obtained; ram pressure ratio, compressor-discharge pressure, exhaust-nozzle area, engine speed, turbine-outlet temperature, fuel-valve position, jet thrust, air flow, turbine-discharge pressure, fuel flow, throttle position, and boost-pump pressure. Representative preliminary data showing the actual time response of these variables are presented. These data are presented in the form of reproductions of oscillographic traces.

Power Electronics Materials and Bonded Interfaces - Reliability and Lifetime

Advanced packaging technologies are currently being designed and developed by the power electronics industry however, the maximum operating temperature is still limited to 175 degrees Celsius for the silicon carbide devices. Bonded materials such as sintered copper and polymeric materials are potential candidates for high temperature operation, but it is critical to characterize and evaluate its reliability under harsh operating conditions. In this project, we discuss the results of the accelerated experiments conducted on sintered copper and polymeric materials. Additionally, a novel framework to develop the lifetime prediction model of bonded interfaces through employing statistical and machine learning models are described. In this task, scanning acoustic microscope images of bonded interfaces obtained under thermal cycling experiments are used as the data.

Power electronic applications for Space Station Freedom

NASA plans to orbit a permanently manned space station in the late 1990s, which requires development and assembly of a photovoltaic (PV) power source system to supply up to 75 kW of electrical power average during the orbital period. The electrical power requirements are to be met by a combination of PV source, storage, and control elements for the sun and eclipse periods. The authors discuss the application of power electronics and controls to manage the generation, storage, and distribution of power to meet the station loads, as well as the computer models used for analysis and simulation of the PV power system. The requirements for power source integrated controls to adjust storage charge power during the insolation period current limiting, breaker interrupt current values, and the electrical fault protection approach are defined. Based on these requirements, operating concepts have been defined which then become drivers for specific system and element design.
