Solid State Synthesis and Properties of Monoclinic Celsian

Monoclinic celsian of Ba(0.75)Sr(0.25)Al2Si2O8 (BSAS-1) and B(0.85)Sr(O.15)Al2Si2O8 (BSAS-2) compositions have been synthesized from metal carbonates and oxides by solid state reaction. A mixture of BaCO3, SrCO3, Al2O3, and SiO2 powders was precalcined at approx. 900-940 C to decompose the carbonates followed by hot pressing at approx. 1300 C. The hot pressed BSAS-1 material was almost fully dense and contained the monoclinic celsian phase, with complete absence of the undesirable hexacelsian as indicated by x-ray diffraction. In contrast, a small fraction of hexacelsian was still present in hot pressed BSAS-2. However, on further heat treatment at 1200 C for 24 h, the hexacelsian phase was completely eliminated. The average linear thermal expansion coefficients of BSAS-1 and BSAS-2 compositions, having the monoclinic celsian phase, were measured to be 5.28 x 10(exp -6)/deg C and 5.15 x 10(exp -6)/deg C, respectively from room temperature to 1200 C. The hot pressed BSAS-1 celsian showed room temperature flexural strength of 131 MPa, elastic modulus of 96 GPa and was stable in air up to temperatures as high as approx. 1500 C.

Crystal growth of sulfide materials from alkali polysulfide liquids

The fluids experiment system was designed for low temperature solution growth, nominally aqueous solution growth. The alkali polysulfides, compositions in the systems Na2S-S and K2S-S form liquids in the temperature range of 190 C to 400 C. These can be used as solvents for other important classes of materials such as transition metal and other sulfides which are not soluble in aqueous media. Among these materials are luminescent and electroluminescent crystals whose physical properties are sensitive functions of crystal perfection and which could, therefore, serve as test materials for perfection improvement under microgravity conditions.

Asteroids - Surface composition from reflection spectroscopy

Minerals partly composing the surfaces of 14 asteroids are determined by using asteroid reflectance spectra and optical properties of meteorites and other materials. Individual electronic absorption features are identified in the asteroids' spectra. The energies, relative strengths, and shapes of these features are interpreted by using laboratory and theoretical studies. Analysis of the initial 14 asteroid reflectance spectra indicates the presence of the following types of surface materials: six carbonaceous chondrite-like; two stony-iron-like (metal/silicate ratio approximately equal to 1); one iron meteorite-like; one basaltic achondrite-like; and four silicate-metal assemblages (metal/silicate ratio approximately equal to 0.25). These results support the conclusion that the asteroid belt is a source of at least some meteoritic material, and they show a relation between certain asteroids and certain classes of meteorites.

Nature of the ultraviolet absorber in the Venus clouds - Inferences based on Pioneer Venus data

Several photometric measurements of Venus made from the Pioneer Venus orbiter and probes indicate that solar near-ultraviolet radiation is being absorbed throughout much of the main cloud region, but little above the clouds or within the first one or two optical depths. Radiative transfer calculations were carried out to simulate both Pioneer Venus and ground-based data for a number of proposed cloud compositions. This comparison rules out models invoking nitrogen dioxide, meteoritic material, and volatile metals as the source of the ultraviolet absorption. Models involving either small (approximately 1 micrometer) or large (approximately 10 micrometers) sulfur particles have same serious difficulties, while ones invoking sulfur dioxide gas appear to be promising.

New Approach for Thermal Protection System of a Probe During Entry

One of the biggest challenges for any thermal protection system (TPS) of a probe is to provide a sufficient barrier for heat generated during descent in order to keep the temperature inside of the probe low enough to support operational temperature of equipment. Typically, such a goal is achieved by having the ceramic tiles and blankets like on the Space Shuttle, silicon based ablators, or metallic systems to cover the probe external surface. This paper discusses the development of an innovative technique for TPS of the probe. It is proposed to use a novel TPS which comprises thermal management of the entry vehicle. It includes: a) absorption of the heat during heat pick load by a Phase Change Material (PCM), b) separation of the compartment which contains PCM from the rest of the space vehicle by a gap with a high thermal resistance, c) maintaining temperature of the internal wall of s/c cabin temperature by transfer heat from the internal wall to the "cold" side of the vehicle and to reject heat into the space during the flight and on a ground, d) utilization of an advanced heat pipe, so called Loop Heat Pipe to transfer heat from the cabin internal wall to the cold side of the s/c and to reject the heat into environment outside of the vehicle. A Loop Heat Pipe is capable of transferring heat against gravity

Inkjet Printing of Conductive Carbon Nanotubes

Systems and methods for forming conductive materials. The conductive materials can be applied using a printer in single or multiple passes onto a substrate. The conductive materials are composed of electrical conductors such as carbon nanotubes (including functionalized carbon nanotubes and metal-coated carbon nanotubes), grapheme, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. pentacene and bisperipentacene), metal nanoparticles, an inherently conductive polymer (ICP), and combinations thereof. Once the conductive materials are applied, the materials are dried and sintered to form adherent conductive materials on the substrate. The adherent conductive materials can be used in applications such as damage detection, particle removal, and smart coating systems.

Thermal Decomposition of Calcium Perchlorate/Iron-Mineral Mixtures: Implications of the Evolved Oxygen from the Rocknest Eolian Deposit in Gale Crater, Mars

A major oxygen release between 300 and 500 C was detected by the Mars Curiosity Rover Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument at the Rocknest eolian deposit. Thermal decomposition of perchlorate (ClO4-) salts in the Rocknest samples are a possible explanation for this evolved oxygen release. Releative to Na-, K-, Mg-, and Fe-perchlorate, the thermal decomposition of Ca-perchlorate in laboratory experiments released O2 in the temperature range (400-500degC) closest to the O2 release temperatures observed for the Rocknest material. Furthermore, calcium perchlorate could have been the source of Cl in the chlorinated-hydrocarbons species that were detected by SAM. Different components in the Martian soil could affect the decomposition temperature of calcium per-chlorate or another oxychlorine species. This interaction of the two components in the soil could result in O2 release temperatures consistent with those detected by SAM in the Rocknest materials. The decomposition temperatures of various alkali metal perchlorates are known to decrease in the presence of a catalyst. The objective of this work is to investigate catalytic interactions on calcium perchlorate from various iron-bearing minerals known to be present in the Rocknest material

Boron-containing organosilane polymers and ceramic materials thereof

The present invention relates to a polyorgano borosilane ceramic precursor polymer comprising a plurality of repeating units of the formula: (R(sup 1) single bond B)(sub p) being linked together at B by second units of the formula: single bond (R sup 2) single bond (Si single bond R sup 3) single bond (sub q), where R(sup 1) is a lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, or (R(sup 2)R(sup 3) single bond Si single bond B single bond)(sub n) and R(sup 2) and R(sup 3) are each independently selected from hydrogen, lower alkyl, vinyl, cycloalkyl, or aryl, n is an integer between 1 and 100; p is an integer between 1 and 100; and q is an integer between 1 and 100. These materials are prepared by combining an organo borohalide of the formula R(sup 4) single bond B single bond (X sup 1) (sub 2) where R(sup 4) is selected from halogen, lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aryl, and an organo halosilane of the formula: R(sup 2)(R sup 3)Si(X sup 2)(sub 2) where R(sup 2) and R (sup 3) are each independently selected from lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aryl, and X(sup 1) and X(sup 2) are each independently selected from halogen, in an anhydrous aprotic solvent having a boiling point at ambient pressure of not greater than 160 C with in excess of four equivalents of an alkali metal, heating the reaction mixture and recovering the polyorgano borosilane. These silicon boron polymers are useful to generate high-temperature ceramic materials, such as SiC, SiB4, and B4C, upon thermal degradation above 600 C.

Surface texturing of fluoropolymers

A method is disclosed for improving surface texture for adhesive bonding, metal bonding, substrate plating, decal substrate preparation, and biomedical implant applications. The surface to be bonded is dusted in a controlled fashion to produce a disbursed layer of fine mesh particles which serve as masks. The surface texture is produced by impinging gas ions on the masked surface. The textured surface takes the form of pillars or cones. The bonding material, such as a liquid epoxy, flows between the pillars which results in a bond having increased strength. For bonding metals a thin film of metal is vapor or sputter deposited onto the textured surface. Electroplating or electroless plating is then used to increase the metal thickness in the desired amount.

Reaction of YBa2Cu3O(7-beta) with Gold, Silver, Bismuth and Lead: Substitution Chemistry and Composite Fabrication

The reaction of YBa2Cu3O(7-beta) with Au, Ag, Bi, and Ph ions or metal is described. Three types of materials were produced: a well-defined series of homogeneous superconductors was obtained for Au ion substitution with little effect on T(sub c); attempted Ag and Bi ion substitution resulted in multi-phase samples with slightly enhanced T(sub c); finally, attempts to produce superconducting metal/superconducting ceramic composites with Pb and Bi powders resulted in multi-phase samples with drastically diminished superconducting properties. For Au- substituted superconductors, YBa2(Cu(l-x)Au(x))3O(7-beta), a substitution series (x = 0 - 0.1) has been synthesized. For x = 0.1 there was no change in the a and b lattice parameters (a = 3.826 A and b = 3.889 A) but a 0.06 A c axis expansion to 11.75 A was observed. The valence of Cu and Au in YBa2Au(0.3)Cu(2.7)O(7-beta) was investigated using X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES). X-ray studies indicate that Au goes into the Cu(l) site and Cu K edge XANES shows that this has little effect on the oxidation state of the remaining copper. A small effect on T(sub c) is observed (T(sub c) = 89 K for x = 0.10). Ag and Bi addition results in a rise in T(sub c) and a decrease in (delta)T(sub c) at low levels (x = 0.10 Ag, T(sub c) = 94 K and (delta)T(sub c) = 0.5 K; x = 0.02 Bi, T(sub c) = 94 K and (delta)T(sub c) = 1K) relative to typical values for YBa2Cu3O(7-beta) (T(sub c) = 91 K, (delta)T(sub c) = 2 K). Attempts at fabrication of Pb- and Pb(1-x)Bi(x)-superconductor composites are described. Cold pressing followed by low temperature (200 C) sintering resulted in a composite which excluded flux below 90 K but did not show zero electrical resistance until the metal (alloy) superconducting transition. X-ray diffraction showed the presence of pervoskite and metal. Processing at moderate (450 C) or high (950 C) temperatures resulted in oxygen-depleted pervoskite and/or metal oxides. These materials displayed greatly degraded superconducting properties. Processing at 800 C resulted in high T(sub c) only for composites containing greater than 90% weight fraction ceramic. Reaction of metal with YBa2Cu3O(7-beta) formed superconducting lead/bismuth-based oxides and other binary oxides.

Further characterization of spectral features attributable to titanium on the moon

The following transitions are observed in the electronic absorption spectra of lunar titanaugites: Fe(2+) spin-allowed and spin-forbidden crystal field; Ti(3+) spin allowed and Jahn-Teller split crystal field; Ti(3+)-Ti(4+) CT; Fe(2+)-Ti(4+) CT; and O(2-)-Fe(2+), Ti(3+), Ti(4+) CT. Of these, the transitions involving Ti(3+) are unique to lunar or nonferric-bearing titanaugites. All titanaugites have the Fe(2+) crystal field and Fe(2+)-Ti(4+) CT transitions in common. These features in the diffuse reflectance spectra of lunar materials give rise to the '1.0 band' and to the observed absorption around 0.5-0.6 micron, respectively. Since regolith contains a variety of phases with coexisting Fe(2+), Ti(3+), and Ti(4+) ions, several metal-metal charge transfer processes are possible.
