Using Large Language Models to help customers monitor global threat data

Large Language Models have proven adept at answering general knowledge questions. To make these generative AI tools useful to our mission customers for monitoring global threats, the data sciences team at Sandia is utilizing retrieval augmented generation (RAG) techniques to customize these models with local data. The local data we use consists of data such as research articles and patent abstracts that we've collected over the last several years using automated pipelines.

Tabletop Testing for EV Charging Ecosystem PKI (Project T34PKI Final Report)

To test the communications and cybersecurity functionality, Electric Vehicle and charging station vendors have had to ship their products to in-person testing events. This is cumbersome, expensive, inefficient, and an impediment to rapid time-to-deployment. In this project Sandia used COTS hardware and Open-Source Software to develop and demonstrate a more agile, productive approach: testing low-voltage controllers independently from high-voltage power delivery sub-systems. This approach allows communications controllers to be transported easily (e.g. shipped at low cost, checked as airline baggage); set up on a table-top (“bench testing”); and use ordinary 120 VAC outlets to conduct agile testing. Table-top platforms become end nodes that can connect to laboratory and cloud-based servers to test communications and cybersecurity, specifically Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) functionality and interoperability, separately from EV battery charging (power/energy transfer) functionality.

Report on Lightning Simulation Standards and Facilities

Lightning strikes pose a significant threat to various forms of infrastructure and electrical equipment. Aircraft and high explosives are of particular interest due to the massive ramifications of the device being compromised due to exposure to lightning damage. However, due to lightning being a varying weather phenomenon, testing a device’s vulnerability to lightning is generally not as simple as simply exposing it to real world lightning. To consistently test a device’s ability to survive the worst-case scenario of lightning exposure, the effects of the most severe lightning strikes must be able to be reproduced consistently and measurably. One such facility for this purpose is the Sandia Lightning Simulator (SLS), which is designed to simulate the current waveform of a severe lightning flash. However, the SLS’s design and age lead to difficulties in its operation and inconsistencies in its output. The methodology used in other lightning simulation facilities may offer information on how to improve the SLS’s operation, or at the very least, expose the SLS’s hidden strengths. This report explores lightning simulation, lightning testing standards, and lightning simulation facilities.

Large Load Impacts to Distribution System Hosting Capacity

This work examined the impact of large loads on utility distribution system models using the Sandia-developed open-source software DREAMS. It was shown that hosting capacity varies with location and changes after any asset is added to, or removed from, a system. Despite the tested models having similar rated voltages and other characteristics, their thermal and voltage constrained hosting capacity varied over 2 MW. The addition of a 3-phase balanced constant power large load with power factor of 1.0 exhibited non-linear reductions to all voltage constrained hosting capacities. The reductions to thermal constrained hosting capacity from a load with similar characteristics was more linear, related to the size of the added load, and did not impact all model buses. Co-located capacitors were shown to accommodate demand that was beyond the baseline voltage constrained hosting capacity limits, however, the costs and benefits from this approach were found to not be 1:1 and required additional available thermal capacity.

Seasonal/Spatial Vertical New Particle Formation Variation Study (SSVNV) Field Campaign Report

The Seasonal/Spatial Vertical NPF Variation Study (SSVNV) campaign was conducted to investigate vertically resolved aerosol variability, boundary-layer structure, and new particle formation (NPF) processes across contrasting atmospheric environments through coordinated tethered balloon system (TBS) observations during U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility fixed-site measurements (Dexheimer et al. 2026). The campaign leveraged the overlapping deployments of the third ARM Mobile Facility (AMF3) at Bankhead National Forest (BNF; Kuang et al. 2023, 2026), Alabama, and the first ARM Mobile Facility 1 (AMF1) Coast-Urban-Rural Gradient Atmospheric Experiment (CoURAGE) in the Baltimore region. The campaign was operated by the TBS team led by Darielle Dexheimer from Sandia National Laboratories, in collaboration with the BNF site science team lead by Chongai Kuang from Brookhaven National Laboratory and the ARM team.

REDESIGNING A PERFORMANCE MONITORING SOFTWARE FOR SUPERCOMPUTERS

The objective of this project was to improve upon the existing Watchr software that charts performance test metrics from the Trilinos project run on supercomputers at Sandia and elsewhere across the DOE complex. Software was iteratively designed and developed using Python Pandas and Dash data visualization to improve the extensibility and user experience of Watchr. Documentation is being maintained for future developers who want to extend the application.

SuperLab 2.0 Showcase: Connecting Five Labs to Tackle Grid Complexity and Unlock Unique Grid Asset Potential

SuperLab 2.0 (a five-lab demonstration) is a collaborative, national-scale experiment showcasing the coordination of geographically distributed energy assets in real time. The demonstration integrates 25 physical and digital assets, spanning wind, photovoltaics, batteries, electrolyzers, DC fast chargers, microgrid controllers, building automation systems, small modular reactors, control centers, and gas turbines, across five U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories: National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), Idaho National Laboratory, National Energy Technology Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories. These assets are unified using Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), a low-latency, high-performance DOE network, and are controlled via a centralized energy controller hosted at NLR's Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems facility. The demonstration validates the ability to stress-test hybrid energy systems under dynamic scenarios to de-risk advanced control strategies for greater resilience and flexibility.
