Technical facilities catalog, volume II

This Technical Facilities Catalog has been developed in response to an increasing demand for general and specific information on NASA technical facilities. The Catalog is intended to: a)provide NASA management, facilities managers, program and project managers, individual research engineers and scientists, and other agencies of the Government with knowledge of existing NASA research, development, test and evaluation facilities and b)provide the reader with a basic concept of the capabilities and functions of the wide variety of NASA technical facilities and the technological areas they support.

Environmental impact statement for Manned Spacecraft Center and White Sands Test Facility

This environment has not only attracted people and increased payrolls, but has also created a broader base for the local economy. The activity of the center was a catalyst to private enterprise and has led to sizeable residential and commercial developments. Adequate treatment of domestic and industrial waste water was maintained. A feasibility study is now being conducted to establish a plan for a coordinated, centerwide plan for advanced treatment of domestic and industrial waste water.

A computer program to automate residual gas analysis

A computer program for automatic determination of gases found in an environmental chamber during spacecraft testing is discussed. Program testing is reviewed. The program is being used for the solution of experimental spectra, where the mass spectrometer is used as a contamination monitor by an untrained spectroscopist.

Advances in cryogenic foam insulations.

Description of a discretely oriented thread-reinforced polyurethane foam thermal insulation system for liquid hydrogen fuel tanks. The 3-D foam and glass liner composite is designed to be adhesively bonded to the inside surface of the tank wall and to be in direct contact with liquid hydrogen. All elements of this insulation composite are capable of sustaining the loads and environmental conditions imposed by testing under simulated Space Shuttle vehicle requirements at temperatures between -423 and +350 F.

Sleep in the nocturnal primate, Aotus trivirgatus.

Measurement of the cycles of wakefulness and stages of sleep in owl monkeys during 24-hr periods divided into half dark and half light segments. Recordings of electrophysiological activity were used. Reversal of the sequence of light and dark served to test the influence of environmental lighting on the sleep-wakefulness cycles. The sleep patterns of owl monkeys expressed in percentage of rapid eye movement (REM) and nonrapid eye movement (NREM) were compared with those of a closely related New World monkey species, Saimiri Sciureus.

Apollo lunar surface experiments package

The ALSEP program status and monthly progress are reported. Environmental and quality control tests and test results are described. Details are given on the Apollo 17 Array E, and the lunar seismic profiling, ejecta and meteorites, mass spectrometer, surface gravimeter, and heat flow experiments. Monitoring of the four ALSEP systems on the moon is also described.

Cyclic oxidation evaluation: Approaching application conditions

A survey is presented of the cyclic furnace and burner rig oxidation facilities at NASA-Lewis Research Center together with a review of selected test results and an initial interpretation of the data obtained. Cyclic furnace tests are used to conveniently screen alloy oxidation resistance and spall tendency; high velocity tests further indicate dynamic environmental resistance. Alloys which form scales predominantly of Cr2O3/chromite spinel spall much more than those forming alpha Al2O3/aluminate spinel scales. Weight changes due to scale spalling were used to estimate alloy depletion/thickness losses.

A new approach to performance optimization of the 1975 Mars Viking lander.

The design of the 1975 Viking lander is based, in part, upon performance optimization analyses and a requirement to maximize operational flexibility. The analysis technique is characterized by a graphical tradeoff approach found to be the most effective for evaluating lifting-entry trajectory performance. The analysis eliminates the constraint of a level flight trajectory and allows the lander to reach positive flight-path angles before parachute deployment. Updated Mars environmental knowledge and recent test results and design decisions are analysis factors. The entry-phase analysis indicates that a hypersonic lift-to-drag ratio of 0.18 and an entry flight-path-angle corridor of -15 to -19 deg satisfy the requirements of optimum performance (maximum payload and sufficient terrain height capability).

NASA presentation

The development of a wind energy system is outlined that supplies reliable energy at a cost competitive with other energy systems. A government directed industry program with strong university support is recommended that includes meteorological studies to estimate wind energy potentials and determines favorable regions and sites for wind power installations. Key phases of the overall program are wind energy conversion systems, meteorological wind studies, energy storage systems, and environmental impact studies. Performance testing with a prototype wind energy conversion and storage system is projected for Fiscal 1977.

Environmental crack-growth behavior of high strength pressure vessel alloys

Results of sustained-load environmental crack growth threshold tests performed on six spacecraft pressure vessel alloys are presented. The alloys were Inconel 718, 6Al-4V titanium, A-286 steel, AM-350 stainless steel, cryoformed AISI 301 stainless steel; and cryoformed AISI 304L steel. The test environments for the program were air, pressurized gases of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, and liquid environments of distilled water, sea water, nitrogen tetroxide, hydrazine, aerozine 50, monomethyl hydrazine, and hydrogen peroxide. Surface flaw type specimens were used with flaws located in both base metal and weld metal.

Analytical trade study of the STS payload environment

The current predicted acoustic environment for the shuttle orbiter payload bay will produce random vibration environments for payload components and subsystems which potentially will result in design, weight and cost penalties if means of protecting the payloads are not developed. Results are presented of a study to develop, through design and cost effectiveness trade studies, conceptual noise suppression device designs for space shuttle payloads. The impact of noise suppression on environmental levels and associated test costs, and on test philosophy for the various payload classes is considered with the ultimate goal of reducing payload test costs. Conclusions and recommendations are presented.

Instrument measures many optical properties in visible and IR

Electro-optical system measures reflectance, reflectance ratio, transmission, absorption, refractive index, and absorption coefficient in both visible and infrared (IR) spectral regions. System effectively combining capabilities of ellisometer, reflectometer, and spectrophotometer is expected to find application in environmental and material composition testing fields.

Silver-Teflon coating improvement

Approximately forty adhesives were subjected to laboratory screening. Seven candidate adhesives were selected from the screening tests and evaluated in a thermal vacuum test on radiator panels similar to the anticipated flight hardware configuration. Several classes of adhesives based on epoxide, polyester, silicone, and urethane resin systems were tested. These included contact adhesives, heat cured adhesives, heat and pressure cured adhesives, pressure sensitive adhesives, and two part paint-on or spray-on adhesives. The panels were tested in a space environmental simulation laboratory chamber during the July 9-20, 1973 time span.
