Good imaging with very fast paraboloidal primaries - An optical solution and some applications

Attention is given to the imaging performance improvement obtainable in telescopes with fast parabolic primaries by means of two-mirror correctors of the Paul-Baker type. Images with 80 percent of the energy concentrated within 0.2 arcsec are projected for an f/1 primary relaying to an f/2 final focus, over a 1 deg-diameter field. It is noted that the mechanical structure and enclosure of a large telescope built with these fast optics should be significantly smaller and less expensive than those for conventional optics. The application of the Paul-Baker corrector system is explored for such diverse telescope types as those employing six off-axis primary mirrors, UV astronomy telescopes with no chromatic aberration, a low emissivity IR astronomy instrument with an off-axis f/1 parent primary mirror part, and thin rectangular aperture telescopes which are useful for spectroscopy and photometry.

Bubbles and braided jets in galaxies with compact radio nuclei

Narrow-band H-alpha CCD images showing ionized gas in organized kiloparsec-scale structures in three galaxies with low-level active nuclei are presented. The edge-on spiral NGC 3079 contains an apparent loop structure which corresponds to previously reported nonthermal radio emission along the minor axis. The optical emission probably results from interaction between the ejected plasma and the ISM in the disk and halo. The S0 galaxy NGC 3998 exhibits an S-shaped structure centered on the nucleus, with no other evidence for spiral structure. In the spiral galaxy NGC 4258, the presence of continuum-free emission-line arms which coincide with the nonthermal radio arms is confirmed. The morphology of the arms suggests the presence of two double-sided jets which braid or wrap around one another and which bifurcate on both sides. It is concluded that the optical and radio emission in NGC 3079 and in NGC 4258 are related, and it is suggested that both are powered by a plasma which flows from the active nucleus and dissipates kinetic energy in the surrounding ISM.

Segmentation and tracking in echocardiographic sequences: active contours guided by optical flow estimates

This paper presents a method for segmentation and tracking of cardiac structures in ultrasound image sequences. The developed algorithm is based on the active contour framework. This approach requires initial placement of the contour close to the desired position in the image, usually an object outline. Best contour shape and position are then calculated, assuming that at this configuration a global energy function, associated with a contour, attains its minimum. Active contours can be used for tracking by selecting a solution from a previous frame as an initial position in a present frame. Such an approach, however, fails for large displacements of the object of interest. This paper presents a technique that incorporates the information on pixel velocities (optical flow) into the estimate of initial contour to enable tracking of fast-moving objects. The algorithm was tested on several ultrasound image sequences, each covering one complete cardiac cycle. The contour successfully tracked boundaries of mitral valve leaflets, aortic root and endocardial borders of the left ventricle. The algorithm-generated outlines were compared against manual tracings by expert physicians. The automated method resulted in contours that were within the boundaries of intraobserver variability.

Inhomogeneous structure of the solar chromosphere from Lyman-continuum data.

A new model of the chromosphere is described that is based on Lyman-continuum observations by Harvard spectrometers aboard the satellites OSO 4 and OSO 6. The temperature, gas pressure, electron pressure, particle densities, and hydrogen ground-state departure coefficient are calculated as a function of height in the chromosphere. The model reproduces the observed quiet-region intensities in the Lyman continuum. The inhomogeneous structures, believed to be spicules, are inferred to be optically thick in the Lyman continuum and to have a source function below that of the mean chromosphere.

Structure in the interstellar extinction curve.

Using photographic techniques, it was attempted to obtain spectra of the interstellar material at a resolution of about 5 A. Three classes of structures are discussed. It is pointed out that the optical observations can be extended into the UV with a resolution of 0.4 A using the OAO-C telescope. The far UV observations would make it possible to conduct an extended search for new diffuse features, in order to evaluate the significance of the apparent absence of any features short of 4,430 A.

Practical antireflection coatings for metal-semiconductor solar cells

The metal-semiconductor solar cell is a potential candidate for converting solar energy to electrical energy for space and terrestrial application. In this paper, a method for obtaining parameters of practical antireflection (AR) coatings for the metal-semiconductor solar cells is given. This method utilizes the measured equivalent index of refraction obtained from ellipsometry, since the surface to be AR coated has a multilayer structure. Both the experimental results and theoretical calculations of optical parameters for Ta2O5 AR coatings on Au-GaAs and Au-GaAs(0.78)P(0.22) solar cells are presented for comparison.

A semiempirical atmosphere for alpha Tauri from neutral iron lines

A semiempirical model photosphere is constructed for the K5 III star Alpha Tau. The technique employed is based on measurements of the central fluxes in a series of lines in multiplets. Observations of four multiplets having a range in excitation potential yield the excitation temperature as a function of the optical depth in a reference line. If the temperature structure of an assumed starting model is changed to force agreement between the observed and predicted line source functions under the assumption that excitation and electron kinetic temperatures are equal, the final semiempirical model is cooler by 150 K in the outer layers and warmer by 150 K in deeper layers than the theoretical model with the parameters adopted for Alpha Tau.

Mechanical properties and the electronic structure of transition of metal alloys

This interdiscipline research program was undertaken in an effort to investigate the relationship between the mechanical strength of Mo based alloys with their electronic structure. Electronic properties of these alloys were examined through optical studies, and the classical solid solution strengthening mechanisms were considered, based on size and molecular differences to determine if these mechanisms could explain the hardness data.

Magnetic loops, downflows, and convection in the solar corona

Optical and extreme-ultraviolet observations of solar loop structures show that flows of cool plasma from condensations near the loop apex are a common property of loops associated with radiations whose maximum temperature is greater than approximately 7000 K and less than approximately 3,000,000 K. It is suggested that the mass balance of these structures indicates reconnection by means of plasma motion across field lines under rather general circumstances (not only after flares). It is shown that the cool material has lower gas pressure than the surrounding coronal medium. The density structure of the bright extreme ultraviolet loops suggests that downflows of cool gas result from isobaric condensation of plasma that is either out of thermal equilibrium with the local energy deposition rate into the corona, or is thermally unstable. The evidence is thought to indicate that magnetic fields act to induce a pattern of forced convection.

A surface acoustic wave /SAW/ charge transfer imager

An 80 MHz, 2-microsecond surface acoustic wave charge transfer device (SAW-CTD) has been fabricated in which surface acoustic waves are used to create traveling longitudinal electric fields in the silicon substrate and to replace the multiphase clocks of charge coupled devices. The traveling electric fields create potential wells which will carry along charges that may be stored in the wells; the charges may be injected into the wells by light. An optical application is proposed where the SAW-CTD structure is used in place of a conventional interline transfer design.

The evolution of spokes in Saturn's B ring

Three types of Saturnian ring spoke structure have been observed which are distinguished by their optical appearance. Extended spokes are found inside the corotation radius. They are of irregular shape, with diffuse edges, but often narrowed at large distances. Their width at the base is typically 20,000 km, and their radial extent is 8000 km. The random velocity of their particles is about 2 m/s, and the total kinetic energy of their random velocity component is about 20 billion J. Narrow spokes are observed to cross the corotation distance and are characterized by high-contrast edges. Their number of particles and total energy content are about 10 percent of the values for extended spokes. Filamentary spokes are observed outside approximately 110,000 km and are usually connected to narrow or extended spokes further in. Their width is typically 500 km and their length is about 3000 km. Their number of particles and total energy content are about 0.5 percent of those of an extended spoke.

Phase separation kinetics in immiscible liquids

The kinetics of phase separation in the succinonitrile-water system are being investigated. Experiments involve initial physical mixing of the two immiscible liquids at a temperature above the consolute, decreasing the temperature into the miscibility gap, followed by iamging of the resultant microstructure as it evolves with time. Refractive index differences allow documentation of the changing microstructures by noninvasive optical techniques without the need to quench the liquid structures for analysis.

0.87-micron CSP diode lasers for spaceborne communications

Index-guided channeled-substrate-planar (CSP) AlGaAs diode lasers are being developed for reliable, high-power operation for use as sources in spaceborne optical communications systems. Although most work on this AlGaAs structure has been aimed at optimizing performance at output wavelengths less than 8400 A, emission in the 8700 A regime is also of interest. In particular, such wavelengths are required for use in the direct detection laser transceiver to be incorporated into NASA's advanced communications technology satellite, in order to avoid absorption of the light by the atmosphere when communicating with ground-based terminals. Lowest order spatial mode and substantially single longitudinal mode output has been observed in 0.87-micron CSP devices in excess of 50 mW cw and 100 mW 50 percent duty-cycle, with rms phase-front aberrations measured to be about lambda/40.

Soil microstructure and electron microscopy

As part of the process of comparing Martian soils with terrestial soils, high resolution electron microscopy and associated techniques should be used to examine the finer soil particles, and various techniques of electron and optical microscopy should be used to examine the undisturbed structure of Martian soils. To examine the structure of fine grained portions of the soil, transmission electron microscopy may be required. A striking feature of many Martian soils is their red color. Although the present-day Martian climate appears to be cold, this color is reminiscent of terrestial tropical red clays. Their chemical contents are broadly similar.
