Multi-kilowatt modularized spacecraft power processing system development

A review of existing information pertaining to spacecraft power processing systems and equipment was accomplished with a view towards applicability to the modularization of multi-kilowatt power processors. Power requirements for future spacecraft were determined from the NASA mission model-shuttle systems payload data study which provided the limits for modular power equipment capabilities. Three power processing systems were compared to evaluation criteria to select the system best suited for modularity. The shunt regulated direct energy transfer system was selected by this analysis for a conceptual design effort which produced equipment specifications, schematics, envelope drawings, and power module configurations.

An interactive driving simulation for driver control and decision-making research

Display techniques and equations of motion for a relatively simple fixed base car simulation are described. The vehicle dynamics include simplified lateral (steering) and longitudinal (speed) degrees of freedom. Several simulator tasks are described which require a combination of operator control and decision making, including response to wind gust inputs, curved roads, traffic signal lights, and obstacles. Logic circuits are used to detect speeding, running red lights, and crashes. A variety of visual and auditory cues are used to give the driver appropriate performance feedback. The simulated equations of motion are reviewed and the technique for generating the line drawing CRT roadway display is discussed. On-line measurement capabilities and experimenter control features are presented, along with previous and current research results demonstrating simulation capabilities and applications.

Buffer management for sequential decoding

Sequential decoding has been found to be an efficient means of communicating at low undetected error rates from deep space probes, but erasure or computational overflow remains a significant problem. Erasure of a block occurs when the decoder has not finished decoding that block at the time that it must be output. By drawing upon analogies in computer time sharing, this paper develops a buffer-management strategy which reduces the decoder idle time to a negligible level, and therefore improves the erasure probability of a sequential decoder. For a decoder with a speed advantage of ten and a buffer size of ten blocks, operating at an erasure rate of .01, use of this buffer-management strategy reduces the erasure rate to less than .0001.

Solar electric propulsion spacecraft power subsystem for an Encke comet rendezvous mission

This paper presents the preliminary functional description of a solar electric propulsion spacecraft power subsystem for an Encke comet rendezvous mission in the 1980s. This description has been derived from the study of the mission requirements and constraints and the study of integrating a solar electric propulsion module with an existing spacecraft. Tradeoff studies performed in the process of selecting power subsystem parameters and performance characteristics are described. The power subsystem designs draw heavily on the designs for existing spacecraft and technology being developed in the electric propulsion research and development program supported by NASA.

Cyclonic disturbances and their consequences in the thermosphere

We draw attention to the possible existence of cyclonic type of disturbances in the thermosphere which are created by localized energy sources in the vicinity of the nightside (and possibly the dayside) auroral oval. Due to the Coriolis force and the character of F-region ion motions, cyclonic disturbance cells of limited extent (3000 to 5000 km) may appear in conjunction with auroral substorms or more prolonged geomagnetic activity. Owing to prevailing thermospheric winds, these disturbances can be expected to drift equatorwards to midlatitude regions. The disturbance zone can be characterized in terms of a cyclonic wind pattern and significant changes in thermospheric neutral gas composition. This latter effect results in decreased plasma densities in the F-region for the lifetime of the disturbance.

A photometric study of Saturn and its rings

A 72-in. telescope and a polarimeter of the Wollaston type with a focal-plane scanning mechanism were used in the investigations reported. On a few occasions observations were made with a 42-in. reflector. The polarization data obtained are presented as vectors superimposed on a drawing of the planet. It is concluded that in the ultraviolet and close to opposition the vectors are consistently radial and decrease to nearly zero near the center of the disk. The polarization is essentially the same at all limbs. It is pointed out that under good seeing conditions Saturn presents a consistent though somewhat complicated, photometric pattern.

A multichannel biotelemetry transmitter utilizing a PCM subcarrier

Making use of the currently available integrated circuits, a miniature PCM telemetry system operating from one miniature 9-volt battery and drawing less than 5 milliamps has been constructed. The use of this PCM telemetry signal not only provides accurate data transmission, but requires a minimum of RF bandwidth. The serial format that results from multiplexing the input data allows the use of a single channel recorder with its cost savings over a multichannel tape recorder. An additional benefit of the PCM encoding is that the data is in digital format and is directly suitable for computer use.

Long-Term Regulation in the Cardiovascular System - Cornerstone in the Development of A Composite Physiological Model

The present work discusses a model of the cardiovascular system and related subsystems capable of long-term simulations of the type desired for in-space hypogravic human physiological performance prediction. The discussion centers around the model of Guyton and modifications of it. In order to draw attention to the fluid handling capabilities of the model, one of several transfusion simulations performed is presented, namely, the isotonic saline transfusion simulation.

Miniature probes for use in gas turbine testing

Because of space limitations and system complexity in many applications associated with gas turbine testing, extremely small flow measuring probes have sometimes been required. This paper presents several examples of these miniature probes - null type as well as fixed position - which have proved useful in aircraft and space power systems component testing and are applicable to automotive gas turbine testing. These probes are used to determine component or system performance from the measurement of gas temperature as well as total and static pressure, and flow direction. Detailed drawings of the sensors are presented along with experimental data covering the flow characteristics over the range of intended use.

Binary galaxy orbit statistics. I - Fixed mass and major axis

Averages for the projected separation, squared radial velocity difference, and the product of these, are presented for a binary galaxy system of fixed mass and major axis, but any orbital eccentricity. The average of the product varies by a factor about 3 for eccentricities from 0 to 1.0. For circular orbits, the results agree with those of Page (1952, 1960, 1961), but for linear orbits his mass estimate is too small by a factor 6. The mutual regressions of the velocity and separation on each other are calculated, and are presented in such a way as to exhibit the relative likelihood of occupation of the different parts of the regression curves. 'Isopleths' for the probability distribution are presented for a few values of the eccentricity to illustrate the underlying cause of pileup at certain parts of the regression curves. It is concluded that previous analyses were inadequate for failing to take into account that the regression curves represent in many cases a distribution that is almost wholly depopulated through most of the range. It is evident that the data are insufficient to draw a firm conclusion about the distribution of eccentricities.

Molecular column densities in selected model atmospheres

Molecular column densities are presented for 35 molecules in a variety of cool stellar model atmospheres. From an examination of the predicted column densities, we draw the following conclusions: (1) OH might be visible in carbon stars which have been generated from triplet-alpha burning, but will be absent from carbon stars generated from the CNO bi-cycle; (2) the TiO/ZrO ratio shows small but interesting variations as C/O is changed and as the effective temperature is changed; (3) the column density of silicon dicarbide (SiC2) is sensitive to abundance, temperature, and gravity; hence, all relationships between the strength of SiC2 and other stellar parameters will show appreciable scatter. There is, however, a substantial luminosity effect present in the SiC2 column densities; (4) unexpectedly, SiC2 is anticorrelated with C2; (5) the presence of SiC2 in a carbon star allows us to eliminate the possibility that these stars are both 'hot' (T sub eff greater than or equal to 3000 K) and have been produced through the CNO bi-cycle (so that C/H is less than solar).

Stimulus novelty, task relevance and the visual evoked potential in man

The visual evoked potential (VEP) to rare, task-relevant (counted) numerical stimuli was compared with VEPs to rare, task-irrelevant stimuli, both being randomly interspersed within a sequence of tachistoscopically-flashed background numbers. These task-irrelevant stimuli were of two classes: (1) easily recognizable (e.g., simple geometric shapes) and (2) completely novel (i.e., complex, colorful abstract-type drawings which were unrecognizable). It was found that such novel stimuli did, in fact, evoke large P3 waves, but they had different scalp distributions from those which followed the task-relevant stimuli. This indicates that at least two types of late positive P3 waves exist, differing both in brain source and psychological correlates.

Centaur propellant acquisition system

The desirability of replacing the hydrogen peroxide settling system of the Centaur D-1S with a capillary acquisition system was evaluated. A comprehensive screening was performed to select the most promising capillary device fluid acquisition, thermal conditioning, and fabrication techniques. Refillable start baskets and bypass feed start tanks were selected for detailed design. Critical analysis areas were settling and refilling, start sequence development with an initially dry boost pump, and cooling the fluid delivered to the boost pump to provide the necessary net positive suction head (NPSH). Design drawings were prepared for start basket and start tank concepts for both the liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen tanks. System comparisons indicated that the start baskets using wicking flow for thermal conditioning, and thermal subcooling for providing boost pump NPSH, are the most desirable systems for future Centaur acquisition system development.
