Preliminary Results of the 3D-shape Round-Robin

In the framework of SFERA-III WP10 Task3, ENEA has organized the 3D-shape round-robin (RR); the purpose is to compare the main geometrical parameters of 3D shape measurement of parabolic-trough (PT) reflective panels evaluated with the instruments adopted by each participant among: ENEA, DLR, F-ISE, NREL, and SANDIA. The last two institutions are outside of the EU, but benefited from the Transnational Access institute to visit several European laboratories, including the ENEA Casaccia research center where they accomplished some measurements with a portable experimental set-up. RR is based on the inter-laboratory circulation of 3 inner plus 3 outer PT panels. The start of the RR was delayed by the covid pandemic, then the circulation of the specimen-set and their measurement took more than one year. At the time of drafting this deliverable at the end of SFERA-III project, NREL has not yet completed the analysis of the measurements, making available only the deviations of the slopes. Therefore here will be reported only the preliminary results. The full comparison will be published as soon as possible, maybe in the open access venue Open Research Europe.

The DECADE cosmic shear project IV: cosmological constraints from 107 million galaxies across 5,400 deg$^2$ of the sky

We present cosmological constraints from the Dark Energy Camera All Data Everywhere (DECADE) cosmic shear analysis. This work uses shape measurements for 107 million galaxies measured through Dark Energy Camera (DECam) imaging of $5,\!412$ deg$^2$ of sky that is outside the Dark Energy Survey (DES) footprint. We derive constraints on the cosmological parameters $S_8 = 0.791^{+0.027}_{-0.032}$ and $Ω_{\rm m} =0.269^{+0.034}_{-0.050}$ for the $Λ$CDM model, which are consistent with those from other weak lensing surveys and from the cosmic microwave background. We combine our results with cosmic shear results from DES Y3 at the likelihood level, since the two datasets span independent areas on the sky. The combined measurements, which cover $\approx\! 10,\!000$ deg$^2$, prefer $S_8 = 0.791 \pm 0.023$ and $Ω_{\rm m} = 0.277^{+0.034}_{-0.046}$ under the $Λ$CDM model. These results are the culmination of a series of rigorous studies that characterize and validate the DECADE dataset and the associated analysis methodologies (Anbajagane et. al 2025a,b,c). Overall, the DECADE project demonstrates that the cosmic shear analysis methods employed in Stage-III weak lensing surveys can provide robust cosmological constraints for fairly inhomogeneous datasets. This opens the possibility of using data that have been previously categorized as ``unusable'' for cosmic shear analyses, thereby increasing the statistical power of upcoming weak lensing surveys.

A source array for generating higher order acoustic modes in circular ducts

A unique source array has been developed for the generation of both spinning and non-spinning higher order modes in a circular duct. The array consists of two concentric rings of sources. Through individual control of the response of each element, the array provided phase and amplitude control in the radial as well as circumferential directions. Radial modes shapes were measured in a 12-inch diameter anechoically-terminated hollow duct. These modes could be generated at their cut-off frequency and throughout a frequency range extending to the cut-off frequency for the next higher order radial mode. Comparisons are given between theory and experiment for the generation of specific modes. The radial dependence of the measured mode shapes was enhanced considerably by the design of this array. The results indicate a significant improvement over previous mode generation mechanisms. The contamination of the generated mode by additional spurious modes is also considered for variations between individual elements within the source array.

On the factorization and fitting of molecular scattering information

The reported analysis is based on the factored IOS T-matrix. It is shown that line shape measurements may be used over a range of temperatures to evaluate inelastic scattering cross sections. Basic factorization or parameterization relations are derived by considering the wavefunction equations. The parameterization of cross sections is considered, taking into account the differential scattering amplitude and cross section, integral cross sections, phenomenological cross sections for general relaxation processes, and viscosity and diffusion cross sections. Thermal averages and rates are discussed, giving attention to integral cross sections and rates, and general phenomenological cross sections. The results of computational studies are also presented.

Heating analysis of bent-nose biconics at high angles of attack using the parabolized Navier-Stokes equations

A method based on the Parabolized Navier-Stokes equations is used to calculate the flow field and heat transfer of lifting entry vehicles. The method is based on the Bean and Warming implicit algorithm and uses a new procedure for preventing departure solutions. Calculations are carried out for blunt on-axis and bent biconics, assuming a perfect gas and laminar flow, and compared with available heat transfer, surface pressure and shock shape measurements for a range of Mach numbers and angles of attack. In all calculations presented here, the starting solution is obtained from available inviscid and boundary layer codes. Good agreement with experiment is indicated. Thus, the method provides an accurate and rather inexpensive procedure for calculating three-dimensional flows at supersonic Mach numbers.

Laser Rangefinder and Remote Profilometer

Proposed laser rangefinder and profilometer operates with precision of about 1mm at ranges of up to 100m. With scanning optics, device could track objects or accurately measure shapes of objects in field of view. New microprocessor-controlled design uses variable-length fiber-optic delay line as distance reference. New rangefinding method used in vision systems for industrial robots.

Interaction Between a Vortex and a Turbulent Boundary Layer. Part 1: Mean Flow Evolution and Turbulence Properties

An experimental study was conducted to examine the interaction between a single weak streamwise vortex and a two-dimensional turbulent boundary layer. Attention was focused on characterizing the effect of the boundary layer on the vortex, including the effects of a moderate adverse pressure gradient. Rapid growth of the vortex core was observed, and a flattening of the core shape occurred when the dimension of the core radius became comparable to the distance of the vortex center from the surface. Adverse pressure gradients caused an increase in the rate of core growth, and therefore, a stronger distortion of the core shape. Measurements of surface skin friction beneath the vortex and some of the Reynolds stresses are presented.

Two-Wavelength Optical-Path-Difference Mapping

Proposed technique for measuring shapes and alignments of reflectors based on use of two-wavelength absolute-distance interferometer to generate optical-path-difference maps of reflecting or refracting surfaces. Facilitates such tasks as determining manufacturing and alignment errors of off-axis segment of large-aperture paraboloidal telescope mirror, or aligning all segments of such mirror. Suitable for use where reflecting surfaces highly aspherical, initial misalignments large, and/or surface errors exceed optical wavelengths.

Investigation of surface water behavior during glaze ice accretion

A series of experimental investigations that focused on isolating the primary factors that control the behavior of unfrozen surface water during glaze ice accretion were conducted. Detailed microvideo observations were made of glaze ice accretions on 2.54 cm diam cylinders in a closed-loop refrigerated wind tunnel. Distinct zones of surface water behavior were observed; a smooth wet zone in the stagnation region with a uniform water film, a rough zone where surface tension effects caused coalescence of surface water into stationary beads, and a zone where surface water ran back as rivulets. The location of the transition from the smooth to the rough zone was found to migrate towards the stagnation point with time. Comparative tests were conducted to study the effect of the substrate thermal and roughness properties on ice accretion. The importance of surface water behavior was evaluated by the addition of a surface tension reducing agent to the icing tunnel water supply, which significantly altered the accreted glaze ice shape. Measurements were made to determine the contact angle behavior of water droplets on ice. A simple multizone modification to current glaze ice accretion models was proposed to include the observed surface roughness behavior.
