Dark scalars and heavy neutral leptons at DarkQuest

The proposed DarkQuest beam dump experiment, a modest upgrade to the existing SeaQuest/SpinQuest experiment, has great potential for uncovering new physics within a dark sector. We explore both the near-term and long-term prospects for observing two distinct, highly-motivated hidden sector benchmark models: heavy neutral leptons and Higgs-mixed scalars. We comprehensively examine the particle production and detector acceptance at DarkQuest, including an updated treatment of meson production, and light scalar production through both bremsstrahlung and gluon-gluon fusion. In both benchmark models, DarkQuest will provide an opportunity to probe previously inaccessible interesting regions of parameter space on a fairly short timescale when compared to other proposed experiments.

Direct-photon production in inelastic and high-multiplicity proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

In this letter, we present the first measurement of direct photons at the transverse momentum of 1 < 𝑝 T < 6 GeV/𝑐 at midrapidity 𝜂 < 0.8 in inelastic and high-multiplicity proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The fraction of virtual direct photons in the inclusive virtual photon spectrum is obtained from a fit to the dielectron invariant mass spectrum. In the limit of zero invariant mass, this fraction is equal to the relative contribution of real direct photons in the inclusive real photon spectrum. Contributions from decays of light- flavour neutral mesons are estimated using independent measurements in proton–proton collisions at the same energy and the same event class. For the first time at the LHC energies, a direct-photon signal is observed at low 𝑝T in both inelastic and high-multiplicity event classes, with a significance of 3.2𝜎 and 1.9𝜎 in terms of standard deviations, correspondingly. The yield of direct photons in inelastic pp collisions is compared to perturbative QCD calculations. The integrated photon yield is studied as a function of charged-particle multiplicity and is compared to the results from other experiments and theoretical calculations. The results show a significant increase of direct- photon yield with charged-particle multiplicity.

Centrality and transverse-momentum dependence of higher-order flow harmonics of identified hadrons in Au+Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Here we present high-precision measurements of elliptic, triangular, and quadrangular flow v 2 , v 3 , and v 4 , respectively, at midrapidity for identified hadrons π, p, K, φ, K s , Λ as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at the center-of-mass energy √ s NN = 200 GeV. We observe similar v n trends between light and strange mesons which indicates that the heavier strange quarks flow as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. The number-of-constituent-quark scaling for v 2 , v 3 , and v 4 is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for 0–10%, 10–40%, and 40–80% collision centrality intervals. The results are compared to several viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying initial conditions, and could serve as an additional constraint to the development of hydrodynamic models.

Power counting of the pion-dilaton effective field theory

Confining QCD-like theories close to the conformal window have a “walking” coupling. This is believed to lead to a light singlet scalar meson in the low-energy spectrum, a dilaton, which is the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson for the approximate scale symmetry. Extending chiral perturbation theory to include the dilaton requires a new small parameter to control the dilaton mass and its interactions. In our previous work we derived a systematic power counting for the dilaton couplings by matching the effective low-energy theory to the underlying theory using mild assumptions. In this paper we examine two alternative power countings which were proposed in the literature based on a phenomenological picture for the conformal transition. We find that one of these power countings fails, in fact, to generate a systematic expansion; the other coincides with the power counting we derived. We also point out that the so-called Δ -potential coincides with the tree-level potential of the former, invalid, power counting. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

𝐽/𝜓-meson–nucleon scattering length from threshold photoproduction on light nuclei

The quality of recent Short-Range Correlations/Color-Transparency (SRC/CT) Collaboration 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction data off a 4 He target from Hall D at Jefferson Laboratory, combined with the feasibility of measuring the reaction close to the free-nucleon energy threshold, opens the door to using incoherent 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction to explore a variety of interesting physics aspects. An example is the estimation of the 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 scattering length |𝛼 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 | on the bound proton, obtained using the vector meson dominance model. The new experiment E12–25–002, conducted by the SRC/CT Collaboration, was recently approved in Hall D with the GlueX spectrometer, which will significantly enhance the number of reconstructed 𝐽/𝜓 mesons. Using a plane-wave theoretical model to generate quasidata, we estimated that the experiment could achieve a result of |𝛼 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 | = 3.08 ± 0.45 mfm. This value can be compared to an extraction based on the free proton data from the GlueX Collaboration, |𝛼 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 | = 3.08 ± 0.55 mfm. A comparison between the two would provide an opportunity to evaluate the effects of medium modification in light nuclei.

Constraints on light dark sector particles from lifetime difference of heavy neutral mesons

Heavy meson decays with missing energy in the final state offer interesting avenues to search for light invisible new physics such as dark matter (DM). In this context, we show that such new physics (NP) interactions also affect lifetime difference in neutral meson-antimeson mixing. We consider general dimension-six effective quark interactions involving a pair of DM particles and calculate their contributions to lifetime difference in beauty and charm meson systems. We use the latest data on mixing observables to constrain the relevant effective operators. We find that lifetime differences provide novel and complementary flavor constraints compared to those obtained from heavy meson decays. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Beyond leading twist: 𝜌 meson decay constants and distribution amplitudes in a self-consistent light-front quark model

In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of decay constants and chiral-even and chiral-odd distribution amplitudes (DAs) up to twist 4 for the 𝜌 meson in the standard light-front quark model (LFQM) based on the Bakamjian-Thomas (BT) construction. For the 𝜌 meson, which possesses both longitudinal (ℎ=0) and transverse (ℎ =±1) polarizations, two types of decay constants, 𝑓$^{∥}_{𝜌}$ and 𝑓$^{⊥}_{𝜌}$, arises accordingly. We demonstrate that these decay constants can be self-consistently extracted from both local (𝑧𝜇 =0) and nonlocal (𝑧𝜇 ≠0) matrix elements ⟨0⁢|$\overline{𝑞}$(𝑧)⁢Γ⁢𝑞⁡(−𝑧)|⁢𝜌⁡(𝑃,ℎ)⟩, with Γ=(𝛾 𝜇 ,𝜎 𝜇⁢𝜈 ,𝛾 𝜇 ⁢𝛾 5 ,𝟏), in a manner independent of current components, polarizations, and reference frames. In particular, we emphasize the role of nonlocal matrix elements involving axial-vector and scalar currents, where mixing between 𝑓$^{∥}_{𝜌}$ and 𝑓$^{⊥}_{𝜌}$ occurs. We show that this mixing is consistently resolved through the BT construction, ensuring the proper extraction of these decay constants.

Low-mass vector-meson production at forward rapidity in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured low-mass vector-meson (𝜔+𝜌 and 𝜙) production through the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity (1.2 < |y| < 2.2) in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV. The low-mass vector-meson yield and nuclear-modification factor were measured as a function of the average number of participating nucleons, ⟨𝑁 part ⟩, and the transverse momentum 𝑝 𝑇 . These results were compared with those obtained via the kaon decay channel in a similar 𝑝 𝑇 range at midrapidity. The nuclear-modification factors in both rapidity regions are consistent within the uncertainties. A comparison of the 𝜔 + 𝜌 and 𝐽/𝜓 mesons reveals that the light and heavy flavors are consistently suppressed across both 𝑝 𝑇 and ⟨𝑁 part ⟩. Finally, in contrast, the 𝜙 meson displays a nuclear-modification factor consistent with unity, suggesting strangeness enhancement in the medium formed.

Tomography of the rho meson in the QCD instanton vacuum: Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions

We analyze the rho meson unpolarized and polarized transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) in the instanton liquid model (ILM). The corresponding TMDs in ILM are approximated by a constituent quark beam function in the leading Fock state multiplied by a rapidity-dependent factor resulting from the staple-shaped Wilson lines, for fixed longitudinal momentum, transverse separation, and rapidity. At the resolution of the ILM, all of the rho meson TMDs are symmetric in parton 𝑥 for fixed transverse momentum, and Gaussian-like in the transverse momentum for fixed parton 𝑥. The latter is a direct consequence of the profiling of the quark zero modes in the ILM. The evolved TMDs at higher rapidity using the Collins-Soper kernel, and higher resolution using the renormalization group, show substantial skewness towards low parton 𝑥.

Tomography of pions and kaons in the QCD vacuum: Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions

We evaluate the pion and kaon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions in the instanton liquid model, a model of the QCD vacuum at low resolution. The relevant transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) are factored into a constituent quark distribution times a rapidity dependent soft factor from staple-shaped Wilson lines, for fixed parton longitudinal momentum and transverse separation. The results are evolved to higher rapidities using the Collins-Soper kernel and higher resolution using renormalization group evolution. The comparison to existing extractions of pion TMDs from Drell-Yan data is briefly discussed.

Color transparency and the proton form factor: Evidence for the Feynman mechanism

A recent experiment by D. Bhetuwal et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 082301 (2021)] used the (e,e'p) reaction on 12 C to search for the effects of color transparency (the absence of final-state interactions). Color transparency was said to be ruled out. Observing the effects of color transparency depends on the ability of a putative point-like-configuration (PLC), formed in a high-momentum transfer coherent reaction, to escape the nucleus without expanding its size. Here, we study the expansion aspect of color transparency using superconformal baryon-meson symmetry and light-front holographic QCD. A new formalism is obtained and used to analyze the recent experiment. The resulting conclusion is that effects of expansion would not be sufficiently significant in causing final-state interactions to occur. Therefore, we conclude that a PLC was not formed. In conclusion, this means that the Feynman mechanism involving virtual photon absorption on a single high-momentum quark is responsible for the high-momentum electromagnetic form factor of the proton.

Pion gravitational form factors in the QCD instanton vacuum. II

We revisit the hard QCD contributions to the pion gravitational form factors, in terms of the twist-2,3 pion distribution amplitudes (DAs), including novel semihard contributions from the instantons. The pion DAs are evaluated in the QCD instanton vacuum and then properly evolved to higher resolution. The results are compared to our recent results from the QCD instanton vacuum, as well as Bethe-Salpeter calculations and recent lattice data. The interpolated hard and soft contributions to the pion D form factor are used to derive the (gravitational) pressure and shear within the pion, with a clear delineation of their range.

Meson Spectroscopy at CLAS and CLAS12: an overview of selected results

Hadron spectroscopy is a valuable tool to experimentally investigate the low-energy, non-perturbative QCD regime, corresponding to the dominant manifestation of the strong force in Nature, in terms of hadrons that constitute the bulk of the visible mass of the Universe. In particular, the measurement of the mesons spectrum, searching for exotic states not compatible with the Quark Model, would provide access to the gluonic degrees of freedom that bind particles together. A broad program to study meson spectroscopy in the light quark sector started at Jefferson Laboratory during the previous 6-GeV period. The CLAS experiment in Hall B used a Bremmstrahlung tagged photon beam impinging on a proton target to provide the first measurement of many photoproduction reactions. Currently, in the 12-GeV era, the MesonEx experiment continues this physics effort, exploiting the larger beam energy and intensity. MesonEx employs low-Q2 electron scattering as a technique to produce an intense and highly energetic quasi-real photon beam. In the experiment, the low-angle scattered electron is measured in a dedicated detector, the Forward Tagger, in coincidence with final state hadrons measured in the CLAS12 spectrometer. In this talk, after discussing some selected results from the CLAS program, I'll present the ongoing MesonEx experiment, showing some preliminary results.

Light-Front Field Theory on Current Quantum Computers

We present a quantum algorithm for simulation of quantum field theory in the light-front formulation and demonstrate how existing quantum devices can be used to study the structure of bound states in relativistic nuclear physics. Specifically, we apply the Variational Quantum Eigensolver algorithm to find the ground state of the light-front Hamiltonian obtained within the Basis Light-Front Quantization (BLFQ) framework. The BLFQ formulation of quantum field theory allows one to readily import techniques developed for digital quantum simulation of quantum chemistry. This provides a method that can be scaled up to simulation of full, relativistic quantum field theories in the quantum advantage regime. As an illustration, we calculate the mass, mass radius, decay constant, electromagnetic form factor, and charge radius of the pion on the IBM Vigo chip. This is the first time that the light-front approach to quantum field theory has been used to enable simulation of a real physical system on a quantum computer.

Validity of approximations used in mesonic atom calculations.

The Deser-Goldberger-Baumann-Thirring (DGBT) formula [a = 1/4B(ΔE 1S /|E 1S |)] and other various approximations commonly used to extract meson-nucleus scattering lengths from energy-level measurements on mesonic atoms are studied by means of a model calculation and are shown to be inadequate for most of the π − -mesonic atoms commonly considered. A simple empirical formula is obtained in place of the DGBT formula for the π − -mesonic atoms of the light nuclei. The DGBT formula is also examined for the case of the K − −He 4 atom and is found to be a good approximation.

Faster Heavy Ion Transport for HZETRN

The deterministic particle transport code HZETRN was developed to enable fast and accurate space radiation transport through materials. As more complex transport solutions are implemented for neutrons, light ions (Z < 2), mesons, and leptons, it is important to maintain overall computational efficiency. In this work, the heavy ion (Z > 2) transport algorithm in HZETRN is reviewed, and a simple modification is shown to provide an approximate 5x decrease in execution time for galactic cosmic ray transport. Convergence tests and other comparisons are carried out to verify that numerical accuracy is maintained in the new algorithm.

Photoproduction of the b 1 (1235) Meson off the proton at E gamma = 6-12 GeV

The GlueX Experiment at Jefferson Lab directs a linearly polarized photon beam on a liquid hydrogen target surrounded by an almost hermetic detector. The experiment aims to study the meson spectrum in the light-quark sector and search for exotic spin-parity states predicted by lattice QCD calculations. The lightest exotic candidate is the π 1 meson, which is predicted to decay dominantly to b 1 π. In this thesis, we present efforts to characterize the ωπ 0 decay channel of the b 1 meson as precursor to an analysis of the sought-after π 1 exotic state. We present an introduction to the physics involved and an overview of the detector subsystems with a focus on the Barrel Calorimeter gain monitoring system, as part of the service work expected by the GlueX Collaboration. We discuss the data analysis method used and present two frameworks, for angular moments and partial waves analyses. Details of the simulation used to calculate the detector acceptance. A proof of concept partial wave analysis is presented along with experimental angular moments as first step to a full analysis of the angular distribution Our partial wave analysis indicates that both S- and D-waves are needed, in qualitative agreement with theoretical expectations. The cross-section of the omega π 0 channel is extracted to be of the scale of 1 μb in agreement with previous measurements. The differential cross-section indicates the presence of two production processes with p 1 = -5:24 ± 0:04 for 0:25 < -t < 0:95 GeV 2 ~c 2 and p 2 = -1:24 ± 0:05 for 0:95 < -t < 2:0 GeV 2 ~c 2 , which does not agree with results from previous experiments. The s-channel helicity conservation and helicity amplitudes of the b 1 meson are presented as additional experimental observables. Our results confirm that the b1 photoproduction process does not conserve s-channel helicity though they do not align with previous measurements. The helicity amplitude of the omega are extracted to be |F 1 | 2 = 0:3037 ± 0:0003 which does not agree with the expected value of a b 1 decay or results from a previous experiment. Future steps in all these analyses will be continued by a new graduate student in the group, culminating in a publication.
