Charge Transfer Properties of Heterostructures Formed by Bi 2 O 2 Se and Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Monolayers

Atomically thin bismuth oxyselenide (Bi 2 O 2 Se) exhibits attractive properties for electronic and optoelectronic applications, such as high charge-carrier mobility and good air stability. Recently, the development of Bi 2 O 2 Se-based heterostructures have attracted enormous interests with promising prospects for diverse device applications. Although the electrical properties of Bi 2 O 2 Se-based heterostructures have been widely studied, the interlayer charge transfer in these heterostructures remains elusive, despite its importance in harnessing their emergent functionalities. Here, a comprehensive experimental investigation on the interlayer charge transfer properties of two heterostructures formed by Bi 2 O 2 Se and representative transition metal dichalcogenides (namely, WS 2 /Bi 2 O 2 Se and MoS 2 /Bi 2 O 2 Se) is reported. In this work, Kelvin probe force microscopy is used to measure the work functions of the samples, which are further employed to establish type-II band alignment of both heterostructures. Photoluminescence quenching is observed in each heterostructure, suggesting high charge transfer efficiency. Time-resolved and layer-selective pump–probe measurements further prove the ultrafast interlayer charge transfer processes and formation of long-lived interlayer excitons. These results establish the feasibility of integrating 2D Bi 2 O 2 Se with other 2D semiconductors to fabricate heterostructures with novel charge transfer properties and provide insight for understanding the performance of optoelectronic devices based on such 2D heterostructures.

The exceedingly strong two-dimensional ferromagnetism in bi-atomic layer SrRuO 3 with a critical conduction transition

In recent years, few-layer or even monolayer ferromagnetic materials have drawn a great deal of attention due to the promising integration of two-dimensional (2D) magnets into next-generation spintronic devices. The SrRuO 3 monolayer is a rare example of stable 2D magnetism under ambient conditions, but only weak ferromagnetism or antiferromagnetism has been found. The bi-atomic layer SrRuO3 as another environmentally inert 2D magnetic system has been paid less attention heretofore. Here we study both the bi-atomic layer and monolayer SrRuO 3 in (SrRuO 3 ) n /(SrTiO 3 ) m (n = 1, 2) superlattices in which the SrTiO 3 serves as a non-magnetic and insulating space layer. Although the monolayer exhibits arguably weak ferromagnetism, we find that the bi-atomic layer exhibits exceedingly strong ferromagnetism with a T c of 125 K and a saturation magnetization of 1.2 μ B /Ru, demonstrated by both superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry and element-specific X-ray circular dichroism. Moreover, in the bi-atomic layer SrRuO 3 , we demonstrate that random fluctuations and orbital reconstructions inevitably occurring in the 2D limit are critical to the electrical transport, but are much less critical to the ferromagnetism. Our study demonstrates that the bi-atomic layer SrRuO 3 is an exceedingly strong 2D ferromagnetic oxide which has great potentials for applications of ultracompact spintronic devices.

Separation of K + and Bi 3+ displacements in a Pb-free, monoclinic piezoelectric at the morphotropic phase boundary

The best piezoelectric properties of any perovskite oxide known are found in the solid solution of the relaxor Pb (Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 and ferroelectric PbTiO 3 . Despite its impressive properties, this system has limited analogy. We present the compositional exploration of the Pb-free analogue (1-x)(K 1/2 Bi 1/2 )(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -x(K 1/2 Bi 1/2 )TiO 3 (KBMN-KBT). We locate the morphotropic phase boundary between x = 0.86 and 0.88 changing from Cm to Pm symmetry and the optimally performing composition at x = 0.88. We report a piezoelectric figure of merit (d 33 *) of 192 pm V —1 from strain measurements. Diffraction methods reveal disordered displacements of K + and Bi 3+ which persist from the KBMN endmember through multiple changes in symmetry. Rearrangement of the Bi 3+ displacements along the uncommon [011] c direction drives the physical response. Ferroelectric, dielectric, and piezoresponse force microscopy are used to study the progression of physical properties through the MPB and attribute the mechanism to a polarization rotation. Taking account for local, short-range, and average structural features yield a balanced perspective on the structure and properties of this system, isolating the driving force within this system to the Bi 3+ bonding configuration. This work yields a strong analogy to the Pb-based analogue, and provides strategies for further optimization.

Electrochemical recovery of Nd using liquid metals (Bi and Sn) in LiCl-KCl-NdCl 3

Highly efficient recovery of Nd into liquid metals of Bi and Sn was achieved in molten LiCl-KCl-NdCl 3 electrolyte at 773–973 K by leveraging the strong interactions of Nd with liquid metals. Based on the emf measurements of Nd-Sn and Nd-Bi alloys, the activity values of Nd were determined as low as 1.1–5.8×10 –13 in both liquid metals at 973 K while the solubility of Nd was found to be 1.46 mol% in Sn and 5.65 mol% in Bi. Both liquid metals demonstrated high round-trip coulombic efficiencies (>99.3%) during deposition-removal cycles of 10–50 mA cm –2 and high recovery capacity up to approximately 20 mol% Nd beyond the solubility limit. In addition, a high Nd recovery yield (84–90%) with respect to the applied charge was confirmed based on chemical analysis of electrolysis products in Bi after constant current electrolysis (–50 mA cm –2 ) at 873–973 K. Overpotentials during the Nd deposition process were attributed to charge-transfer and mass-transport resistances based on the current-potential curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The charge-transfer kinetics of Nd deposition into liquid metals was facile with high exchange current densities at ~220 mA cm –2 . Finally, the exceptionally high recovery efficiency for Nd in the molten chloride is thought to result from strong chemical interactions (i.e., low activity) of Nd in liquid metals that encourage one-step reduction, i.e., Nd 3+ + 3e → Nd(in Bi or Sn) by effectively suppressing side reaction pathways from multivalent states (Nd 2+ and Nd 3+ ).

Immobilization of cesium and iodine into Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 perovskite-silica composites and core-shell waste forms with high waste loadings and chemical durability

Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_9$, a defect perovskite derivative, is a potential host phase to immobilize iodine and cesium with high waste loadings. In this work, two strategies were explored to form Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_9$-silica composites and a core-shell structure in order to improve chemical durability of waste form materials meanwhile maintaining high waste loadings. Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_9$ loadings as high as 70 wt.% were incorporated into a silica matrix to form silica-ceramic composites, and 20 wt.% Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_9$ was encapsulated into silica to form a core–shell structure by low temperature spark plasma sintering. Chemical durability of the composite and core-shell waste forms was evaluated by semi-dynamic leaching experiments, and Cs and I were incongruently released from waste form matrices. A BiOI alteration layer formed, acting as a passivation layer to reduce the release of radionuclides. The long-term iodine release rate was low (30 mg m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$) for the 70 wt.%Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_9$–silica composite leached in deionized water at 90 °C, which can be further reduced to 5 × 10$^{-3}$ mg m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$ for the 20 wt.% core-shell structure. This work highlights a robust way to immobilize the highly mobile radionuclides with high waste loadings through encapsulation into durable matrices and a surface passivating mechanism that can greatly reduce the elemental transport from waste form materials and significantly enhance their chemical durability.

Electromagnetic moments of 215,217 Bi: Probing shell evolution beyond N = 126

The nuclear properties of bismuth isotopes (Z = 83) , with just one valence proton above the closed spherical shell at (Z = 82) , are expected to be governed by a single unpaired proton. However, already in semimagic 209 Bi (Z = 83, N = 126) , , the magnetic moment (μ) strongly deviates from the single-particle Schmidt value. A near linear decrease in μ with the increase of N after the N = 126 magic number was observed up to N = 130 . In order to test whether this trend is kept at N > 130 and to reveal the underlying mechanisms, an investigation of 215,217 Bi (N = 132, 134) has been undertaken. The magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the I π = 9/2 - nuclear ground states in these isotopes have been measured for the first time using the in-source resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique at ISOLDE (CERN). It has been shown that the linearly decreasing trend of μ( 209,211,213 Bi g ) is broken in 215,217 Bi with a nearly constant value of μ observed. Experimental data have been compared to calculations in the framework of the configuration-interaction shell model with the monopole-based universal V MU +LS interaction. The peculiarities in the behavior of μ(Bi, 9/2 - ) with increasing neutron number are explained as being due to the shell evolution, change of the neutron orbitals occupancies and strong configuration mixing beyond N = 130 . Also, the difference in the μ trends for bismuth (Z = 83) and astatine (Z = 85) isotopes with N > 126 are reproduced by the shell-model calculations. It is shown that monopole interaction plays noticeable role in the description of the peculiarities of the μ behaviour. Additionally, the extension of the application of the V MU interaction to the μ isotopic trends for heavy nuclei is important for further study of the capabilities of this promising version of the shell-model calculations.

Effects of Surface Terminations of 2D Bi 2 WO 6 on Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution from Water Splitting

Two-dimensional (2D)-structured photocatalysts with atomically thin layers not only have the potential to enhance hydrogen generation efficiency but also allow more direct investigations of the effects of surface terminations on photocatalytic activity. In this work, taking 2D Bi 2 WO 6 as a model, we found that the configuration of bilayer Bi 2 O 2 sandwiched by alternating WO 4 layers enabled the thermodynamic driving potential for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Without Pt deposition, the H 2 generation efficiency can reach to 56.9 μmol/g/h by 2D Bi 2 WO 6 as compared with no activity of Bi 2 WO 6 nanocrystals under simulated solar light. This configuration is easily functionalized by adsorption of Cl – /Br – to form Bi–Cl/Bi–Br bonds, which leads to the decrease of recombination in photogenerated charge carriers and narrower band gaps. This work highlights an effective way to design photocatalysts with efficient hydrogen evolution by tuning the surface terminations.

Quantum Size Effects, Multiple Dirac Cones, and Edge States in Ultrathin Bi(110) Films

The presence of inherently strong spin–orbit coupling in bismuth, its unique layer-dependent band topology and high carrier mobility make it an interesting system for both fundamental studies and applications. Theoretically, it has been suggested that strong quantum size effects should be present in the Bi(110) films, with the possibility of Dirac Fermion states in the odd-bilayer (BL) films, originating from dangling p z orbitals and quantum-spin hall (QSH) states in the even-bilayer films. However, the experimental verification of these claims has been lacking. Here, we study the electronic structure of Bi(110) films grown on a high-T c superconductor, Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (Bi2212) using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We observe an oscillatory behavior of electronic structure with the film thickness and identify the Dirac-states in the odd-bilayer films, consistent with the theoretical predictions. In the even-bilayer films, we find another Dirac state that was predicted to play a crucial role in the QSH effect. In the low thickness limit, we observe several extremely one-dimensional states, probably originating from the edge-states of Bi(110) islands. Our results provide a much needed experimental insight into the electronic and structural properties of Bi(110) films.

Ultrafast Carrier Self-Trapping Driven by Strong Exciton–Phonon Coupling in 2D MA 3 Bi 2 I 6 Cl 3 Perovskite

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid bismuth halide perovskites have emerged as promising lead-free materials for optoelectronic applications due to their solution processability and tunable structures. Here, in this study, we investigate 2D layered hybrid perovskite MA 3 Bi 2 I 6 Cl 3 using temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Our results reveal strong coupling between excitons and phonons, evidenced by giant Huang–Rhys factors, coherent phonon oscillations, and ultrafast carrier self-trapping into small-polaron and self-trapped exciton (STE) states. These processes appear as time-dependent ground-state bleach and photoinduced absorption features, highlighting the influence of the lattice in carrier dynamics. Wavelength- and time-resolved measurements reveal that PL emission is dominated by STEs, while free exciton emission is weak and short-lived. By comparing 2D MA 3 Bi 2 I 6 Cl 3 with 0D MA 3 Bi 2 I 9 , which contains molecularly isolated [BiI 6 ] 3− octahedra and 2D MA 3 Bi 2 Br 9 perovskites, we demonstrate how halide composition and structural dimensionality influence the balance between free exciton populations and carrier localization. These insights uncover the intrinsic kinetic landscape of photoexcited states in MA 3 Bi 2 I 6 Cl 3 . Overall, our study contributes to a mechanistic understanding of exciton–phonon interactions in lead-free 2D perovskites.

Rheology of bi-disperse dense fiber suspensions

While significant progress has been made in the modeling and simulation of uniform fiber suspensions, no existing model has been validated for industrially-relevant concentrated suspensions containing fibers of multiple aspect ratios. In the present work, we investigate bi-disperse suspensions with two fiber populations in varying aspect ratios in a steady shear flow using direct numerical simulations. Moreover, we measure the suspension viscosity by creating a controlled length bidispersity for nylon fibers suspended in a Newtonian fluid. Here the results showed good agreement between the experimentally measured and numerically predicted viscosity for bi-disperse suspensions. The ratio between the aspect ratio of large to small fibers (size ratio) and the volume fraction of large fibers (composition) in bi-disperse systems strongly affected the rheological behavior of the suspension. The increment of relative viscosity associated with size ratio and composition can be explained by the decrease in the maximum flowable limit or jamming volume fraction. Moreover, the relative viscosity of bi-disperse suspensions collapses, when plotted against the reduced volume fraction, demonstrating the controlling influence of the jamming fraction in bi-disperse fiber suspensions.

Magnetic and electronic structures of antiferromagnetic topological material candidate EuMg 2 Bi 2

In this work, EuMg 2 Bi 2 has been investigated to understand the electronic and magnetic behaviors as an antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological semimetal candidate. High-quality single crystals of EuMg 2 Bi 2 were grown via a Bi flux and, subsequently, characterized to be consistent with the previously reported bulk magnetic and resistivity properties. A ferromagnetic interaction is indicated by the positive Curie–Weiss temperature obtained through fitting the bulk magnetic susceptibility data. The bulk resistivity measurements reveal an interesting electronic behavior that is potentially influenced by a competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interaction in and out of the ab plane. From the resulting refinement of the neutron diffraction data, EuMg 2 Bi 2 was found to exhibit an A-type magnetic structure with Eu 2+ moments ferromagnetically aligned in the plane and antiferromagnetically stacked between neighbor ferromagnetic Eu layers. The power law fitting magnetic ordering parameter below TN~8 K agrees with the 2D Heisenberg model, indicating a weak interlayer antiferromagnetic interaction. Considering the magnetic structure determined by neutron diffraction, the surface state calculation suggests that EuMg 2 Bi 2 is an AFM topological insulator candidate. Linearly dispersed Dirac surface states were also observed in our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, consistent with the calculation.

Synthesis and transport properties of epitaxial Bi (111) films on GaAs (111) substrates

In recent decades, the growth of ultrathin epitaxial bismuth (Bi) films on various substrates has garnered interest due to their unique electronic properties. We report upon the growth and electrical transport properties of epitaxial Bi (111) films in the thickness range of 5–32 nm deposited directly on GaAs (111) substrates, without a buffer layer. The quality of Bi films is found to depend on conditions for substrate treatment using Ar + ion-milling and annealing. Substrates milled at low ion beam currents display poor surface reconstruction after annealing, which hinders the growth of high-quality films. In contrast, substrates milled under optimized conditions led to reconstructed surfaces upon annealing, resulting in epitaxial Bi films with predominantly single-domain orientation. Although epitaxial films formed in both cases, transport measurements indicated significantly higher conductivity for films grown on optimally treated substrates. Measurements at low temperatures suggest that the transport properties are dominated by a surface state with high mobility electrons. Magneto-transport measurements suggest that conductivity and mobility improve progressively with increasing film thickness. For the thinnest 5 nm film, a hole-like state emerges, presumably as the electron-like state is gapped out. These results provide a robust methodology for growing high-quality epitaxial Bi films on GaAs (111) and offer insights into their unique transport properties and our ability to tune them.

Combinatorial deposition of Au–Bi alloys via high-rate magnetron sputtering

Gold–bismuth (Au–Bi) alloy films are promising candidate materials for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) hohlraums due to their high laser-to-x-ray conversion efficiency, particularly compared with Au, Ta–Au, and Bi hohlraums. However, the fabrication of uniform and dense Au–Bi alloy films remains a challenge. Here, we use a combination of Monte-Carlo modeling and experiments to demonstrate that the microstructure and properties of Au–Bi alloy films can be greatly improved when direct-current magnetron sputtering with high deposition rates of ⩾5 μm h -1 is used. Resultant films are ~90% of their maximum theoretical densities and have low O content of <1 at.%. Films with Bi content above 40 at. % exhibit high electrical resistivity >100μΩ cm, making them suitable for both magnetized and non-magnetized ICF schemes.

Variation of effective filament diameter, irreversibility field, anisotropy, and pinning efficiency in Bi-2212 round wires

Abstract In recent years Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O x (Bi-2212) received increasing attention due to its round wire multifilamentary architecture, a unique feature in high- T c superconductor. In fact, round wires are preferable for magnet designs, including solenoids for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) or research purpose and accelerator magnets. However, due to the narrow over-pressure heat treatment conditions necessary to obtain high J c and to the peculiar microstructure of Bi-2212 wires, a full understanding of the correlations between the different properties has not yet been developed. In this paper we investigate the effect of a vital part of Bi-2212 optimization, the maximum heat-treatment temperature T max in the range of 885 °C–896 °C, on the variations of J c , effective filament diameter d eff , anisotropy γ , INTER- and intra-grain irreversibility fields and pinning energies U 0 , all critical parameters in unravelling the complex mix of vortex pinning and connectivity that ultimately determines the critical current density. We found that d eff of the higher J c wires heat-treated at lower temperature is much smaller than for the lower J c wires. Moreover, a systematic increase of the irreversibility field and a decrease of the intrinsic Bi-2212 anisotropy underpins the higher J c . The analysis of the pinning energies reveals that there is little sample-to-sample variation in the INTER-grain pinning, whereas in all samples the intra-grain pinning has an enhancement below ∼40–45 K becoming more and more evident with increasing J c . These results suggest that the overall J c performance are not only related to the wire microstructure and connectivity, which obviously affect the INTER-grain properties, but they are also intimately related to the intrinsic and intra-grain properties such as γ and U 0 .

Scanning tunneling microscopy study of epitaxial Fe 3 GeTe 2 monolayers on Bi 2 Te 3

Abstract Introducing magnetism to the surface state of topological insulators, such as Bi 2 Te 3 , can lead to a variety of interesting phenomena. We use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study a single quintuple layer (QL) of the van der Waals magnet Fe 3 GeTe 2 (FGT) that is grown on Bi 2 Te 3 via molecular beam epitaxy. STM topographic images show that the FGT grows as free-standing islands on Bi 2 Te 3 and outwards from Bi 2 Te 3 steps. Atomic resolution imaging shows triangular lattices of 390 ± 10 pm for FGT and 430 ± 10 pm for Bi 2 Te 3 , consistent with the respective bulk crystals. A moiré pattern is observed on FGT regions with a periodicity of 4.3 ± 0.4 nm that can be attributed solely to this lattice mismatch and thus indicates zero rotational misalignment. While most of the surface is covered by a single QL of the FGT, there are small double QL regions, as well as regions with distinct chemical terminations due to an incomplete QL. The most common partial QL surface termination is the FeGe layer, in which the top two atomic layers are missing. This termination has a distinctive electronic structure and a 3 x 3 R 30 ∘ reconstruction overlaid on the moiré pattern in STM images. Magnetic circular dichroism measurements confirm these thin FGT films are ferromagnetic withT C ∼190 K.

Prediction of superconductivity and topological aspects in single-layer β -Bi 2 Pd

Topological superconductors, characterized by topologically nontrivial states residing in a superconducting gap, are a recently discovered class of materials having Majorana fermions. The interplay of superconductivity and topological states gives rise to opportunities for achieving such topological superconductors in condensed matter systems. Up to now, several single-material topological superconductors in this form have been theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed. Here, using the first-principles calculations, we study the superconducting single-layer β-Bi 2 Pd. In this work, the electronic density of states near Fermi level of this monolayer are dominated by the Bi-p and Pd-d orbitals, forming a two-band Fermi surface with multiclass sheets. The presence of soft phonon bands, in cooperation with the electron susceptibility, accounts for electron-phonon superconductivity of single-layer β-Bi 2 Pd. With the centrosymmetric structure, single-layer β-Bi 2 Pd possesses a continuous gap over the whole Brillouin zone and topological Dirac-like states at its one-dimensional boundary. The present findings would lead to the expectation of one-dimensional topological superconductivity and Majorana bound states in a monolayer candidate of β-Bi 2 Pd with intrinsic full-gap superconductivity.

Dynamic Nuclear Spin Polarization Induced by the Edelstein Effect at Bi(111) Surfaces

Nuclear spin polarization induced by hyperfine interaction and mainly the Edelstein effect due to strong spin-orbit interaction, is investigated by quantum transport in Bi(111) thin film samples. The Bi(111) films are deposited on mica by van der Waals epitaxial growth. The Bi(111) films show micrometer-sized triangular islands with 0.39 nm step height, corresponding to the Bi(111) bilayer height. At low temperatures a high current density is applied to generate a nonequilibrium carrier spin polarization by mainly the Edelstein effect at the Bi(111) surface, which then induces dynamic nuclear polarization by hyperfine interaction. Here, comparative quantum magnetotransport antilocalization measurements indicate a suppression of antilocalization by the in-plane Overhauser field from the nuclear polarization and allow a quantification of the Overhauser field. Hence nuclear polarization was both achieved and quantified by a purely electronic transport-based approach.

Carrier properties of Bi(111) grown on mica and Si(111)

A comparison is presented between properties of Bi(111) films grown by Stranski-Krastanov epitaxy on Si(111) 7 × 7 and by van der Waals epitaxy on mica substrates. Thin film morphologies and electronic transport properties of Bi(111) films of variable thickness are investigated for each growth method. Atomic force micrographs for Bi(111) films on mica reveal clearly defined triangular regions consisting of layered steps with height 0.4 nm, corresponding to the Bi(111) bilayer height. Variable-temperature electronic transport measurements show the existence of a quantum confinement-induced energy gap in the film interiors, resulting in a semimetal-to-semiconductor transition. Magnetotransport analysis in a three-carrier model including metallic electrons in surface states and electrons and holes in the films' interiors provides a detailed study of densities, mobilities, and mean-free paths of the three carrier types. Further, improved electronic transport properties are found in Bi(111) films of higher thickness on mica compared to on Si(111), a likely result of the largely strain-free van der Waals epitaxial growth.
