Assimilation of All-Weather GMI and ATMS Observations into HWRF

We propose a novel Bayesian Monte Carlo Integration (BMCI) technique to retrieve the profiles of temperature, water vapor, and cloud liquid/ice water content from microwave cloudy measurements in the presence of TCs. These retrievals then can either be directly used by meteorologists to analyze the structure of TCs or be assimilated to provide accurate initial conditions for the NWP models. The technique is applied to the data from the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) onboard Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) and Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI).

Evaluation of the Controller-Managed Spacing Tools, Flight-Deck Interval Management and Terminal Area Metering Capabilities for the ATM Technology Demonstration #1

NASA has developed a suite of advanced arrival management technologies combining time-based scheduling with controller- and flight deck-based precision spacing capabilities that allow fuel-efficient arrival operations during periods of high throughput. An operational demonstration of these integrated technologies, i.e., the ATM Technology Demonstration #1 (ATD-1), is slated for 2016. Human-in-the-loop simulations were conducted to evaluate the performance of the ATD-1 system and validate operational feasibility. The ATD-1 system was found to be robust to scenarios with saturated demand levels and high levels of system delay. High throughput, 10 above baseline demand levels, and schedule conformance less than 20 seconds at the 75th percentile were achievable. The flight-deck interval management capabilities also improved the median schedule conformance at the final approach fix from 5 to 3 seconds with less variance.

Assimilation of GMI and ATMS Observations in the Rainbands of Hurricanes

We propose a novel Bayesian Monte Carlo Integration (BMCI) technique to retrieve the profiles of temperature, water vapor, and cloud liquid/ice water content from microwave cloudy measurements in the presence of tropical cyclones (TC). These retrievals then can either be directly used by meteorologists to analyze the structure of TCs or be assimilated into numerical models to provide accurate initial conditions for the NWP models. The BMCI technique is applied to the data from the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) onboard Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) and Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI). The retrieved profiles are then assimilated into Hurricane WRF using GSI data assimilation system. This talk presents the development of the BMCI retrieval system as well as the preliminary results of assimilating the retrievals into NASA GEOS-5 model.

ATM-X: Air Traffic Management – eXploration: Urban Air Mobility Overview

The UAM market is expected to be big in the billions of dollars. And, of course, UAM will need to be able to readily access and operate in the airspace for this to happen. In the ATM-X UAM sub-project, we are focused on NASA’s top-level goal of enabling UAM Maturity Level-4 (UML-4) operational density and complexity, with hundreds of simultaneous operations in a metropolitan area managed through a UTM-like architecture with third-party provided traffic management services. We are doing this by developing a concept of operations with the FAA and the UAM community that serves as a framework and guide for community research and development. We are also doing this by conducting research to define system requirements based on the concept and developing the UAM airspace management system for the AAM National Campaign.

The AIRNOISE-UAM Tool and its Application to ATM-X

The noise disruption caused by Urban Air Mobility (UAM) vehicles will be a major factor in public acceptance of UAM. The noise exposure caused by fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is predicted using Aviation Environment and Design Tool (AEDT) software at the airport. The base noise is calculated by interpolation or extrapolation of Noise-Power-Distance (NPD) database in the AEDT. In this presentation, a new noise prediction tool "AIRNOISE-UAM" is developed with a new NPD database for eVTOL vehciles in collaboration with a RVLT team. The noise exposure results have been verified with those from AEDT. Lastly, we demonstrate two use cases of AIRNOISE-UAM to the ATM-X project. The first use case is to develop noise exposure maps for FAA UAM compliance planning. The sceond use case is to develop noise-aware flight route planning algorithm.

Upper Class E Traffic Management (ETM) and ATM-X

This is a slide set for presentation at the 4th Federal UAS Workshop jointly hosted by NASA and USGS. The contents of the slide cover the work currently being performed with respect to the Upper Class E Traffic Management (ETM) concept, which addresses the needs and gaps in the management of high altitude airspace operations. This concept leverages elements developed through the UAS Traffic Management project with respect to a cooperative, service-based approach that provides services and capabilities in areas (e.g., Upper E airspace) that currently receive no or limited service from Air Traffic Control. This concept is meant to provide a safe, fair, and scalable approach to management of Upper E operations that reduces the burden on ATC while providing the flexibility and access desired by current and new users of the airspace. This set of slides includes an overview and rationale of the ETM concept, a recap of the progress made, the road ahead, and the place of ETM within its parent project: Air Traffic Management-eXploration (ATM-X).

2-D Lunar Microwave Radiance Observations From the NOAA-20 ATMS

Reported here are disk-integrated Moon surface microwave brightness temperature (Tb) retrievals covering the frequency range of 23–183 GHz. FullMoon observations obtained from the advanced technology microwave sounder (ATMS) onboard the NOAA-20 satellite during a special spacecraft pitch–maneuver operation forms the basis of the retrievals. Instrument nonlinearity, Earth sidelobe contamination, cosmic background radiation, and reflector thermal emission corrections are applied to the observations to obtain accurate values of the Moon’s Tb at all frequencies. The measured full Moon Tb ranges from ~240 to 293 K with frequency increases from 23 to 183 GHz. A clear frequency trend is detected when the brightness temperature increases.

Precipitation Phase Determination by Brightness Temperatures From ATMS

Previous studies used the temperature-related variables from model outputs (e.g., 2-m temperature) for precipitation phase determination (i.e., rain–snow separation). This study presents a new idea for precipitation phase determination using brightness temperatures (TBs) from Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS). It is found that TB-based phase discrimination shows comparable determination performance to that from model outputs over land. In contrast, TB-based phase discrimination over the ocean performs noticeably worse than that from model outputs. Further analyses reveal that the phase determination performance over land from TBs slightly depends on the satellite’s local zenith angle. However, the determination performance over the ocean strongly depends on the satellite’s local zenith angle, with the skill score decreasing sharply from 0.74 near the nadir to 0.55 near the edge. These results imply that over land, TBs may be used directly for phase determination, which can be extended to other operational and future microwave sounders with similar channels available.

Analysis of CrIS-ATMS Data Using an AIRS Science Team Version 6 - Like Retrieval Algorithm

CrIS/ATMS is flying on NPP and is scheduled to fly on JPSS-1. CrIS/ATMS has roughly equivalent capabilities to AIRS/AMSU. The AIRS Science Team Version 6 retrieval algorithm is currently producing very high quality level-3 Climate Data Records (CDR's) that will be critical for understanding climate processes AIRS CDRs should eventually cover the period September 2002 through at least 2020. CrIS/ATMS is the only scheduled follow on to AIRS AMSU. I have been asked by Ramesh Kakar if CrIS/ATMS can be counted on to adequately continue the AIRS/AMSU CDRs beyond 2020, or is something better needed? This research is being done to answer that question. A minimum requirement to obtain a yes answer is that CrIS/ATMS be analyzed using an AIRS Version 6 - like algorithm. NOAA is currently generating CrIS/ATMS products using 2 algorithms: IDPS and NUCAPS
