Transonic unsteady airloads on an energy efficient transport wing with oscillating control surfaces

An aspect-ratio 10.8 supercritical wing with oscillating control surfaces is described. The wing is instrumented with 252 static orifices and 164 in situ dynamic pressure transducers for studying the effects of control surface deflection on steady and unsteady pressures at transonic speeds. Selected results from initial wind-tunnel tests conducted in the Langley Transonic Dynamics Tunnel are discussed. Unsteady pressure results are presented for two trailing-edge control surfaces oscillating separately at the design Mach number of 0.78. Some experimental results are compared with analytical results obtained by using linear lifting-surface theory.

Latitudinal oscillations of plasma within the Io torus

The equilibrium latitude and the period of oscillations about this equilibrium latitude are calculated for a plasma in a centrifugally dominated tilted dipole magnetic field representing Jupiter's inner magnetosphere. It is found that for a hot plasma the equilibrium latitude in the magnetic equator, for a cold plasma it is the centrifugal equator, and for a warm plasma it is somewhere in between. An illustrative model is adopted in which atoms are sputtered from the Jupiter-facing hemisphere of Io and escape Io's gravity to be subsequently ionized some distance from Io. Finally, it is shown that ionization generally does not occur at the equilibrium altitude, and that the resulting latitudinal oscillations provide an explanation for the irregularities in electron concentration within the torus, as reported by the radioastronomy experiment aboard Voyager I.

Phase variability in the rapid optical oscillations of SS Cygni

High-speed photometry of SS Cygni on four nights during the 1978 September eruption revealed a small-amplitude optical oscillation with period 8.23 s and mean semiamplitude 0.0005 mag on September 21 and period 8.50 s and mean semiamplitude 0.0006 mag on September 23. If the observed periods present orbital periods near the surface of the white dwarf, then the white dwarf mass must exceed 0.92 solar mass. Phase variability of the oscillation is analyzed quantitatively and found to be less than that observed in 1978 June for soft X-ray pulsations from SS Cygni.

Relaxation oscillations in optically pumped molecular lasers

The observation of relaxation oscillations in both the (C-13)H3F and (C-12)H3F optically pumped lasers is reported. Expressions are derived for the oscillation frequency and its temperature and pressure dependences using a four-level rate equation model. Excellent agreement between measured frequencies and the theory presented is observed. Models are considered for using this phenomenon to determine the rotational and vibrational relaxation mechanisms of the laser gases.

Space applications of superconductivity - Resonators for high stability oscillators and other applications

The potential applications of superconductivity in space are examined. It is shown that superconducting oscillators have achieved better frequency stability that any other device for averaging times of 10 s to 1000 s. Such a high stability results from the use of solid niobium resonators having Q factors greater that 10 to the 10th. Oscillators of this type have direct applications as clocks and spectrally pure sources. In addition, they may also be used for accurate measurements of many physical quantities and to perform a variety of experiments on fundamental constants, relativity, and gravity waves.

Interaction of oscillations of channel flow and flow separation at duct discontinuities

A two dimensional experiment was used to study the flow fluctuations in the separated region resulting from a wall slot step (convergent step). This geometry corresponds to the geometry present in a segmented solid rocket motor in the region of the ends of adjoining segments. A modulated tunnel flow of controlled oscillation frequency was used, and the effect on flow fluctuations in the separated region was examined by hot wire velocity measurements. The transfer function between free stream oscillations and separated flow fluctuations at the driven frequency was determined over a range of frequencies and main stream flow velocities. The transfer function exhibited a frequency dependence with maximum in the 10 - 25 Hz range, with the maximum occurring at higher frequency when the mean flow velocity was higher.

Pulsations and oscillations

The observations of the oscillations of the solar atmosphere are a powerful diagnostic tool for research into the structure of the atmosphere from inside the convection zone to the upper chromosphere. Interpretations of the global pulsations or oscillations are presented with emphasis on using these observations to study the structure of the interior of the Sun.

Stall flutter experiment in a transonic oscillating linear cascade

Two dimensional biconvex airfoils were oscillated at reduced frequencies up to 0.5 based on semi-chord and a free stream Mach number of 0.80 to simulate transonic stall flutter in rotors. Steady-state periodicity was confirmed through end-wall pressure measurements, exit flow traverses, and flow visualization. The initial flow visualization results from flutter tests indicated that the oscillating shock on the airfoils lagged the airfoil motion by as much as 80 deg. These initial data exhibited an appreciable amount of scatter; however, a linear fit of the results indicated that the greatest shock phase lag occurred at a positive interblade phase angle. Photographs of the steady-state and unsteady flow fields reveal some of the features of the lambda shock wave on the suction surface of the airfoils.

Observations of fast oscillations in SS Cygni

High-speed photometric observations of the dwarf nova SS Cygni have been made using an ultraviolet and blue sensitive photomultiplier. Rapid oscillations were detected over an interval of 7 days. The period of the oscillations passed through a minimum of 7.29 s, the shortest period yet observed in a dwarf nova. The signal was spread in frequency by an amount larger than required by the slow evolution of the period. The data are considered from the viewpoint of several models.

Phugoid oscillations in optimal reentry trajectories

A major problem with operations of lifting reentry vehicle having and aft center-of-gravity location due to large engine mass at the rear is the required hypersonic trim to fight the desired trajectory. This condition is most severe for lifting maneuvers. As a first step toward analyzing this problem, this paper considers the lift requirement for some basic maneuvers in the plane of a great circle. Considerations are given to optimal lift control for achieving the maximization of either the final altitude, speed or range. For the maximum-range problem, phugoid oscillation along an optimal trajectory is less severe as compared to a glide with maximum lift-to-drag ratio. An explicit formula for the number of oscillations for an entry from orbital speed is proposed.

Observationally determined silicon II oscillator strengths

Si II oscillator strengths for eight resonance lines from the ground state have been determined using a curve-of-growth analysis of interstellar data from the Copernicus and International Ultraviolet Explorer satellites. The oscillator strengths for 1526 A and 1808 A increase by factors of 3.0 and 1.5, respectively, from previously tabulated values; those for 989 A and 1020 A decrease by factors of 0.55 and 0.60, respectively. These new values result in better silicon abundances for interstellar clouds and resolve a long-standing puzzle in the interpretation of quasar absorption line data.

Oscillator strengths and collision strengths for S v

Observations of the optical extreme-ultraviolet spectrum of the Jupiter planetary system during the Voyager space mission revealed bright emission lines of some sulfur ions. The spectra of the torus at the orbit of Io are likely to contain S V lines. The described investigation provides oscillator strengths and collision strengths for the first four UV lines. The collision strengths from the ground state to four other excited states are also obtained. Use is made of a two-state calculation which is checked for convergence for some transitions by employing a three-state or a four-state approximation. Target wave functions for S V are calculated so that the oscillator strengths calculated in dipole length and dipole velocity approximations agree within 5%.

Using SAW Resonators in RF Oscillators

Surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) resonators used as frequency-determining elements in radio-frequency oscillators circuits. Oscillators are frequencymodulated, phase-modulated, or pulse-modulated. SAW resonators are especially applicable to low-power subminiature applications, such as biotelemetry and wind-tunnel instrumentation, where they advantageously replace crystals. Resonators are smaller than crystals and very thin--advantage where small package size is important.

Neutrino masses, neutrino oscillations, and cosmological implications

Theoretical concepts and motivations for considering neutrinos having finite masses are discussed and the experimental situation on searches for neutrino masses and oscillations is summarized. The solar neutrino problem, reactor, deep mine and accelerator data, tri decay experiments and double beta-decay data are considered and cosmological implications and astrophysical data relating to neutrino masses are reviewed. The neutrino oscillation solution to the solar neutrino problem, the missing mass problem in galaxy halos and galaxy cluster galaxy formation and clustering, and radiative neutrino decay and the cosmic ultraviolet background radiation are examined.

An experimental investigation of gapwise periodicity and unsteady aerodynamic response in an oscillating cascade. 1: Experimental and theoretical results

Tests were conducted on a linear cascade of airfoils oscillating in pitch to measure the unsteady pressure response on selected blades along the leading edge plane of the cascade, over the chord of the center blade, and on the sidewall in the plane of the leading edge. The pressure data were reduced to Fourier coefficient form for direct comparison, and were also processed to yield integrated loads and, particularly, the aerodynamic damping coefficient. Results from the unsteady Verdon/Caspar theory for cascaded blades with nonzero thickness and camber were compared with the experimental measurements. The three primary results are: (1) from the leading edge plane blade data, the cascade was judged to be periodic in unsteady flow over the range of parameters tested; (2) the interblade phase angle was found to be the single most important parameter affecting the stability of the oscillating cascade blades; and (3) the real blade theory and the experiment were in excellent agreement for the several cases chosen for comparison.

An experimental study of small-amplitude drop oscillations in immiscible liquid systems

Measurements of the characteristics of small-amplitude shape oscillations of drops immersed in a host liquid have been carried out by acoustical means. The resonance frequencies of the first few modes have been measured, as well as the damping constant for the fundamental mode, as functions of the drop radius and viscosities of the two liquids. A qualitative photographic study during steady oscillations has revealed a simple internal fluid-particle flow field with no circulation. The theory available at the present time has been found to provide results which are in general agreement with experimental findings for low-viscosity liquids.

Oscillating dynamo in the presence of a fossil magnetic field - The solar cycle

Hydromagnetic dynamo generation of oscillating magnetic fields in the presence of an external, ambient magnetic field introduces a marked polarity asymmetry between the two halves of the magnetic cycle. The principle of oscillating dynamo interaction with external fields is developed, and a tentative application to the sun is described. In the sun a dipole moment associated with the stable fluid beneath the convection zone would produce an asymmetrical solar cycle.
