A study to determine the flight characteristics and handling qualities of variable geometry spacecraft. Volume 2: Medium L/D concept with switch-blade wings

Flight characteristics and wing deployment transients for a variable geometry logistics spacecraft concept having a hypersonic lift-drag ratio near 2.0, and employing switch-blade wings for deployment at high subsonic speeds have been determined. These characteristics are based on detailed static wind tunnel results and estimated weight and inertial characteristics of a 9-man logistics lifting entry vehicle. In all instances, unpowered flight is assumed. The present volume is the second of a four volume series encompassing hypersonic lift-drag ratio vehicles from 1 to 3, and including several forms of deployable lifting surfaces. For Volumes 1 and 3, see N70-25699 and N72-15779 respectively.

Vacuum stability testing of Apollo 15 Scientific Instrument Module (SIM) non-metallic materials and reversion of silicone rubber in a motor switch

Vacuum stability screening tests were performed on the Apollo 15 Scientific Instrument Module (SIM) bay nonmetallic materials in accordance with the NASA document SP-R-0022. The testing was necessary to support the evaluation to determine the effect material outgassing contamination would have on the SIM bay optical lenses and sensing devices. The Apollo 15 SIM experiments were highly successful, therefore, it is assumed that contamination due to the outgassing of nonmetallic materials did not affect equipment operation. A related problem, the reversion of a silicone rubber grommet which affected an electrical motor switch operation is also reported.

Detonation of insensitive high explosives by a Q-switched ruby laser.

Immediate longitudinal detonations have been observed in confined small-diameter columns of PETN, RDX, and tetryl by using a focused Q-switched ruby laser. The energy ranged from 0.8 to 4.0 J in a pulse width of 25 nsec. A 1000-A-thick aluminum film deposited on a glass window was used to generate a shock wave at the window-explosive interface when irradiated by the laser. In some cases, steady-state detonations were reached in less than .5 microsec with less than 10% variation in the detonation velocity.

High power microstrip RF switches.

Description of a microstrip-type single-pole double-throw switch, which uses only two PIN diodes, eliminates usual dc blocking capacitors, and has demonstrated an RF power handling capacity greater than 100 W CW at S-band. The insertion loss is less than 0.25 dB, and the input-to-off port isolation is greater than 36 dB over a bandwidth larger than 30 MHz.

Stress waves generated in thin metallic films by a Q-switched ruby laser

Investigation results on stress waves generated by Q-switched ruby laser irradiated thin metal films under confinement, studied over a wide range of film materials and film thicknesses, are reviewed. The results indicate that the dependence on these parameters is much weaker than is predicted by heat transfer estimations commonly used to describe the interaction of laser irradiation with unconfined bulk-solid surfaces.

Transmitter switch for high-power microwave output

Combiner system can be used for combining output powers of two transmitters or for switching from one to the other. This can be done when pair of transmitters operate on same frequency and carriers are phase coherent as by excitation from single exciter.

Switching regulator emission control circuit for ion sources

An electron emission control circuit of the switching regulator type operating at 100 kHz has been developed which maintains a constant emission current within 0.1% for a cathode power demand variation of approximately 100%. The power output stage has an efficiency of 67%, and the overall efficiency is 45% when driving a thoria-coated iridium cathode having a nominal resistance at operating temperature of 2.5 ohms. Under optimum conditions, the bus power demand is 1.75 W. The circuit is useful in controlling the electron emission current of ion sources in applications which involve a substantial variation of the cathode work function, such as oxygen partial pressure measurements over a large dynamic range.

A dynamic packet-switching system for satellite broadcast channels

A new satellite multi-access scheme for packet-switching computer communications combines a dynamic allocation technique with conventional time-division multiplexing to minimize delays and maximize traffic thruput. The scheme is designed to give the shortest delays to short-duration interactive or priority traffic, at the expense of longer delays for large data transfers. Simulation results show markedly improved delay-thruput characteristics over conventional time-division multiplexing for a wide range of traffic mixes, with especially significant performance gains as the traffic imbalance among the nodes increases.

Development of a 1000V, 200A, low-loss, fast-switching, gate-assisted turn-off thyristor

The results of a program to develop a fast high power thyristor that can operate in switching circuits at frequencies of 10 to 20 kHz with very low power loss are given. Feasibility was demonstrated for a thyristor that blocks 1000V forward and reverse, conducts 200A, turns on in little more than 2 more microseconds with only 2A of gate drive, turns off in 3 microseconds with 2A of gate assist current and has an energy dissipation of only 12 mJ per pulse for a 20 microsecond half sine wave 200A pulse. Data were generated that clearly showed the tradeoffs that can be made between the turn off time and forward drop. The understanding of this relationship is necessary in the selection of deliverable thyristors with turn off times up to 7 microseconds to give improved efficiency in a series resonant dc to dc inverter application.

Spatial filter for Q-switched lasers

A spatial filtered Q-switched laser system is reported that prevents ionization of air in close proximity to the aperture of the spatial filter. A compound lens system having an astigmatic focus is positioned between the laser and the spatial filter for defocusing the light beam emanating from the laser in the vicinity of the aperture of the spatial filter to an intensity below that which produces ionization of air. The preferred construction of the compound lens system as viewed from the laser comprises a cylindrical lens and a pair of positive lenses.

Optimal design of mixed-media packet-switching networks - Routing and capacity assignment

This paper considers a mixed-media packet-switched computer communication network which consists of a low-delay terrestrial store-and-forward subnet combined with a low-cost high-bandwidth satellite subnet. We show how to route traffic via ground and/or satellite links by means of static, deterministic procedures and assign capacities to channels subject to a given linear cost such that the network average delay is minimized. Two operational schemes for this network model are investigated: one is a scheme in which the satellite channel is used as a slotted ALOHA channel; the other is a new multiaccess scheme we propose in which whenever a channel collision occurs, retransmission of the involved packets will route through ground links to their destinations. The performance of both schemes is evaluated and compared in terms of cost and average packet delay tradeoffs for some examples. The results offer guidelines for the design and optimal utilization of mixed-media networks.
