An innovative digital image correlation technique for in-situ process monitoring of composite structures in large scale additive manufacturing

As additive manufacturing (AM) continues to develop and become a standardized manufacturing method, there will be a continued need to provide in-situ monitoring during the manufacturing of polymer composite printed components. Thermal residual stress is a primary cause of failures such as interlayer disbonds or delamination, micro cracking, and dimensional instability, which can occur during or after the build. Here, we report a novel digital image correlation (DIC) adaptation to monitor thermal residual stresses during the entire print process for large-scale AM. In this work, DIC has been investigated (a) by the natural speckle produced by the polymer surface for correlation, (b) to monitor AM build, and (c) to evaluate the effect of thermal residual stress on warpage of the printed component. The natural speckle pattern of the AM material resulted in a respectable 3.57% error compared to the traditional painted speckle pattern of 3.05% error. DIC measured a 190% increase in vertical displacement at the edge of the wall compared to the center, indicating warpage during AM. This work is a step towards a non-intrusive residual stress measuring technique using DIC for large-scale AM.

Polymer Coatings on Virus-like Particle Nanoreactors at Low Ionic Strength—Charge Reversal and Substrate Access

Virus-like particles (VLPs) are a class of biomaterials which serve as platforms for achieving the desired functionality through interior and exterior modifications. Through ionic strength-mediated electrostatic interactions, VLPs have been assembled into hierarchically ordered materials. This work builds on predictive models to prepare polymer-coated VLP dusters at very low ionic strength. Zeta potential measurements showed that the clusters carried a strongly positive charge, a complete charge reversal from the VLP building block. SAXS analysis confirmed polymer adsorption onto the VLP exterior. Furthermore, we then studied the activity of an encapsulated enzyme toward small molecular and macromolecular substrates to determine the effect of each component of the hierarchically assembled material. We found that while encapsulation and polymer coating did not have a large effect on access to the enzyme by its native, small molecular substrate, substrate modification with a macromolecule caused the polymer coating and encapsulation to affect the access to the enzyme.

19.28% Efficiency and Stable Polymer Solar Cells Enabled by Introducing an NIR–Absorbing Guest Acceptor

Here, a near-infrared (NIR)-absorbing small-molecule acceptor (SMA) Y-SeNF with strong intermolecular interaction and crystallinity is developed by combining selenophene-fused core with naphthalene-containing end-group, and then as a custom-tailor guest acceptor is incorporated into the binary PM6:L8-BO host system. Y-SeNF shows a 65 nm red-shifted absorption compared to L8-BO. Thanks to the strong crystallinity and intermolecular interaction of Y-SeNF, the morphology of PM6:L8-BO:Y-SeNF can be precisely regulated by introducing Y-SeNF, achieving improved charge-transporting and suppressed non-radiative energy loss. Consequently, ternary polymer solar cells (PSCs) offer an impressive device efficiency of 19.28% with both high photovoltage (0.873 V) and photocurrent (27.88 mA cm –2 ), which is one of the highest efficiencies in reported single-junction PSCs. Notably, ternary PSC has excellent stability under maximum-power-point tracking for even over 200 h, which is better than its parental binary devices. The study provides a novel strategy to construct NIR-absorbing SMA for efficient and stable PSCs toward practical applications.

Tuning Film Stresses for Open-Air Processing of Stable Metal Halide Perovskites

Challenges to upscaling metal halide perovskites (MHPs) include mechanical film stresses that accelerate degradation, dominate at the module scale, and can lead to delamination or fracture. In this work, we demonstrate open-air blade coating of single-step coated perovskite as a scalable method to control residual film stress after processing and introduce beneficial compression in the thin film with the use of polymer additives such as gellan gum and corn starch. The optoelectronic properties of MHP films with compression are improved with higher photoluminescence yields. MHP film stability is significantly improved under compression, under humidity, heat, and thermal cycling. By measuring the evolution of film stresses, we demonstrate for the first time that stress relaxation occurs in MHP films with tensile stress that correlates with film degradation. Finally, this discovery of a new mechanism underpinning MHP degradation shows that film stress can be used as a parameter to screen MHP devices and modules for quality control before deployment as a design for reliability criterion.

Biomimetics as a Model for Inspiring Human Innovation

Electroactive polymers (EAP) are human made actuators that are the closest to mimic biological muscles. Technology was advanced to the level that biologically inspired robots are taking increasing roles in the world around us and making science fiction ideas a closer engineering reality. Artificial technologies (AI, AM, and others) are increasingly becoming practical tools for making biologically inspired devices and instruments with enormous potential for space applications. Polymer materials are used to produce figures that resemble human and animals. These materials are widely employed by the movie industry for making acting figures and by the orthopedic industry to construct cyborg components. There are still many challenges ahead that are critical to making such possibilities practical. The annual armwrestling contest is providing an exciting measure of how well advances in EAP are implemented to address the field challenges. There is a need to document natures inventions in an engineering form to possibly inspire new capabilities.

Fused ring non-fullerene acceptors with benzothiophene dioxide end groups and their side chain effect investigations

The development of small molecule-based non-fullerene acceptors (NF-SMAs) greatly advanced the performances of polymer solar cells (PSCs) in recent years. As the foreseeability of commercializing this technology in the future, interest in reducing the materials cost is rising. To this end, efforts have been made in this work on exploring the usage of commercially available chemical segment of benzothiophene dioxide (BC) in constructing efficient NF-SMAs. Thus, we designed and synthesized two BC-based NF-SMAs, which showed high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.59% also by device engineering and side chain engineering. Our work revealed the full potential of using BC end groups in constructing high-performance NF-SMAs and demonstrated the application of side chain engineering in tuning material properties and performances.

Mechanically and Thermally Robust Gel Electrolytes Built from A Charged Double Helical Polymer

Polymer electrolytes have received tremendous interest in the development of solid-state batteries, but often fall short in one or more key properties required for practical applications. Herein, a rigid gel polymer electrolyte prepared by immobilizing a liquid mixture of a lithium salt and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether with only 8 wt% poly(2,2′-disulfonyl-4,4′-benzidine terephthalamide) (PBDT) is reported. The high charge density and rigid double helical structure of PBDT lead to formation of a nanofibrillar structure that endows this electrolyte with stronger mechanical properties, wider temperature window, and higher battery rate capability compared to all other poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolytes. The ion transport mechanism in this rigid polymer electrolyte is systematically studied using multiple complementary techniques. Li/LiFePO 4 cells show excellent capacity retention over long-term cycling, with thermal cycling reversibility between ambient temperature and elevated temperatures, demonstrating compelling potential for solid-state batteries targeting fast charging at high temperatures and slower discharging at ambient temperature.

Complex Relationship between Side-Chain Polarity, Conductivity, and Thermal Stability in Molecularly Doped Conjugated Polymers

Molecularly doped conjugated polymers with polar side chains are an emerging class of conducting materials exhibiting enhanced and thermally stable conductivity. In this work, we study the electronic conductivity (σ) and the corresponding thermal stability of two polythiophene derivatives comprising oligoethylene glycol side chains: one having oxygen attached to the thiophene ring (poly(3-(methoxyethoxyethoxy)thiophene) (P3MEET)) and the other having a methylene spacer between the oxygen and the thiophene ring (poly(3-(methoxyethoxyethoxymethyl)thiophene) (P3MEEMT)). Thin films were vapor-doped with fluorinated derivatives of tetracyanoquinodimethane (FnTCNQ, n = 4, 2, 1) to determine the role of dopant strength (electron affinity) in maximum achievable σ. Specifically, when vapor doping with F 4 TCNQ, P3MEET achieved a substantially higher σ of 37.1 ± 10.1 S/cm compared to a σ of 0.82 ± 0.06 S/cm for P3MEEMT. Structural characterization using a combination of X-ray and optical spectroscopy reveals that the higher degree of conformational order of polymer chains in the amorphous domain upon doping with F 4 TCNQ in P3MEET is a major contributing factor for the higher σ of P3MEET. Additionally, vapor-doped P3MEET exhibited superior thermal stability compared to P3MEEMT, highlighting that the presence of polar side chains alone does not ensure higher thermal stability. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the dopant–side-chain nonbond energy is lower in the P3MEET:F 4 TCNQ mixture, suggesting more favorable dopant–side-chain interaction, which is a factor in improving the thermal stability of a polymer/dopant pair. Our results reveal that additional factors such as polymer ionization energy and side-chain–dopant interaction should be taken into account for the design of thermally stable, highly conductive polymers.

Rheology of fresh cement pastes containing polymer nanoparticles

Influences of polymer nanoparticles (PNPs) with varied charge densities on the rheological behaviors of fresh cement pastes (fcps) without and with polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) were studied. In the blank fcp, the addition of PCE and highly anionically charged PNPs greatly decreases the yield stress and the plastic viscosity due to their large adsorption on cement that produces electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance between cement grains. However, the non-adsorbing nonionic PNPs show a slightly opposite effect. In the PCE-containing fcp, both the anionic and nonionic PNPs become non-adsorbing on cement due to the stronger affinity of PCE to cement surface. In this way, the addition of the PNPs in the PCE-containing fcp slightly increases the yield stress and the plastic viscosity, but significantly decreases the pseudoplastic index, which is believed to result from the generation of the so-called depletion attractive force between cement grains induced by the non-adsorbing polymers.

A negative piezo-conductive effect from doped semiconducting polymer thin films

In the past years, piezo-conductive sensors have drawn great attention in both academic and industrial sectors. The piezo-conductive sensors made by inorganic semiconductors exhibited poor mechanical flexibility, restricting their further practical applications. In this study, we report the piezo-conductive sensors by a semiconducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with tosylate ions (PEDOT:Tos) thin films. Systemically studies indicate that the piezo-conductive response of the PEDOT:Tos thin films is originated from the deformation of the PEDOT crystal cells and the stretched π–π distances induced by Tos. Moreover, the negative piezo-conductive effect, for the first time, is observed from PEDOT:Tos thin film under the pressure. A working mechanism is further proposed to interpret the transient from a positive to a negative piezo-conductive response within the PEDOT:Tos thin films. Our studies offer a facile route to approach effective piezo-conductive sensors based on conjugated polymers.

Dopamine-Mediated Polymer Coating Facilitates Area-Selective Atomic Layer Deposition

Area-selective atomic layer deposition (ALD) has the potential to significantly improve current fabrication approaches by introducing a bottom-up process in which robust and conformal thin films are selectively deposited onto patterned substrates. This bottom-up approach requires selective areas of the substrates to be masked to inhibit deposition. Spontaneous self-assembly and organization of a mask, incorporating adhesion and other functions, are particularly attractive for this role as they do not require a separate patterning step. In this work, we make use of the pH/light tunability of catechol adhesion to develop a catechol-functionalized polymer that exhibits tunable adhesion strengths on different materials based on their specific chemistry. Tunable selective deposition was shown between metal/metal oxide substrates by controlling the local pH. Moreover, by controlling the adhesion strength through UV light, the deposition of hafnium oxide (HfO 2 ) during ALD was successfully inhibited.

Photoresponsive polymers for carbodiimide-fueled transient hydrogels

Light- and carbodiimide-responsive hydrogels were synthesized. An “AND” gate was developed using ortho-nitrobenzyl (ONB) protected carboxylic acids in the polymer backbone. Crosslinking was only realized in the presence of both UV stimulus to photocleave the ONB group and carbodiimide fuels to induce anhydride bonds. In the presence of water, the anhydride bonds eventually hydrolyze to carboxylic acids and the system returns to the solution state. The mechanical properties of the out-of-equilibrium hydrogels were investigated using oscillatory rheology to examine the effects of deprotection efficiency, carbodiimide concentration and chain architecture on the hydrogels’ moduli and decrosslinking time. Higher moduli and longer decrosslinking times were found with increased carbodiimide concentration and deprotection efficiency. These discoveries unveil new possibilities for photoresponsive chemically fueled soft materials.

Ultra-selective CANAL Polymers for Hydrogen-based Membrane Separations after Long-Term Aging

Hydrogen is a critically important molecule in the chemicals and energy industries, driving the need for efficient purification technologies such as membrane-based separations. However, polymer membranes often suffer from physical aging, leading to decreased gas permeability over time. This study leverages the unique aging behavior of contorted microporous polymers, synthesized via catalytic arene-norbornene annulation (CANAL) polymerization, to enhance molecular sieving for H 2 separations. While prior studies demonstrated a 1000% increase in H 2 /CH 4 selectivity with minimal permeability loss over 150 days, we extend this investigation to hyperaged (∼1 year) CANAL polymers and evaluate their performance under various conditions of industrial relevance. We report a remarkable 6100% increase in H 2 /CH 4 selectivity and a 2400% improvement in H 2 /N 2 selectivity, with only a 55% decline in H 2 permeability. These membranes exhibit excellent long-term stability in binary and ternary gas mixtures and at elevated temperatures. Additionally, extended aging enhances H 2 /CO 2 selectivity beyond the 2008 upper bound due to improved size-sieving. High-temperature permeation experiments and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations reveal that H 2 permeability increases from 570 to 3500 barrer as the temperature rises from 35 °C to 190 °C, while H 2 /CO 2 selectivity declines from 14 to 3 due to the higher diffusion activation energy of CO 2 . Despite this tradeoff, hyperaged CANAL membranes maintain performance beyond the 200 °C upper bound, having selectivity–permeability performance comparable to many state-of-the-art membranes for H 2 /CO 2 separations. As a result, this study highlights the robustness and industrial viability of ultra-selective CANAL polymers for hydrogen purification, contributing to advancements in clean energy and sustainable separation technologies.

Additive-Induced Morphology Change of Polymer Film Enables Enhanced Charge Mobility and Faster Organic Electrochemical Transistor Switching

Conjugated polymers (CPs) play an important role in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) for bioelectronics and related applications, where they serve as channel materials. Currently, most successful polymers for CPs are re-engineered from traditional CPs by replacing hydrophobic alkyl side chains with hydrophilic ethylene glycol or ionic groups. Frustratingly, the enhanced ion transport often compromises the charge mobility of the original CP. In this work, we present an additive-mediated method to construct a modified poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) film to enable efficient ion migration. The additive is designed with a cleavable diazo group that releases nitrogen and 2-methoxyethanol, a volatile compound, to alter the P3HT film morphology. OECTs based on the film exhibit improved response times. Interestingly, the process also enhances the crystallinity of P3HT, leading to higher hole mobility compared with pristine P3HT. This study proposes an in situ strategy to achieve the functionality of the OMIEC via morphological regulation, offering a promising route to simultaneously enhance both ion accessibility and charge mobility.

Linear Viscoelastic Properties of Putative Cyclic Polymers Synthesized by Reversible Radical Recombination Polymerization (R3P)

Linear viscoelastic properties in both melt and solution states are reported for a series of poly(3,6-dioxa-1,8-octanedithiol) (polyDODT) made by reversible radical recombination polymerization (R 3 P) under conditions designed to produce linear (LDODT), cyclic (RDODT) and linear-cyclic mixtures (LRDODT). PolyDODT is amorphous (T g < -50 °C) and highly flexible (entanglement molecular weight M e,lin ≈ 1850 g/mol for LDODT). PolyDODT’s low T g and low M e,lin enable characterization over a wide dynamic range and a wide range of dimensionless weight-average molecular weight Z w = M w /M e,lin . Measurements at temperatures from -57 °C to 100 °C provide up to 18 deades of reduced frequency, which is necessary to characterize RDODT melts with Z w from 23 to 300. The two highest molecular weight polymers in the present RDODT series have such high M w (406k and 556k g/mol) that mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and even chemical assays for chain ends are unable to rule out up to 2 mol% linear contaminant. By studying the samples in solution (using dilution to reduce Z w ) we could compare their dynamics with those of previously established high-purity polystyrene (PS) rings (limited to Z w ≤ 13.6). RDODT solutions with Z w < 15 (concentrations <5wt% for RDODT-406k and 556k) have dynamic moduli G^* that accord with LCCC-purified PS rings in terms of the frequency dependence (including the absence of a plateau), the progression of shapes of G* as a function of Z w , and the linear scaling of their zero-shear viscosity η0 with M w . The shape of G* as a function of Z w for solutions of RDODT-406k and -556k also accord with lower M w RDODT melts (which have ≤ 1.3mol% linear contaminant). Thus, measurement of the linear viscoelastic properties of appropriate concentrations of high M w (>200k g/mol) putative cyclic polymers, in which linear chains evade spectroscopic detection, may provide an alternative means (though not fully proven) of validation of sample purity. When Z w > 15 (including all seven RDODT melts and eight of their solutions), G* has a rubbery plateau. This suggests that the onset of entanglement-like behavior in rings requires 4-5-fold greater Z w than is required for linear chains. Further, the plateau moduli of RDODT samples are indistinguishable from G N o of the corresponding LDODT (melt or matched-concentration solutions). In entangled linear polymers, the observation that G N o is independent of Z w follows from limitations on lateral fluctuations due to neighboring chains becoming independent of position along a given chain. The present results for RDODT suggest that this holds for sufficiently long endless chains, too. While the RDODT have the same G N o as entangled LDODT, when Z w > 60 the terminal relaxation, if reached at all, of RDODT extends to orders of magnitude lower frequency than an entangled linear polymer of the same Z w . Consequently, the viscosity of RDODT with Z w > 60 increases with Z w much more strongly than the 3.4-power observed for entangled linear polymers. Lastly, these novel polymers, with disulfide-linked backbone and broad relaxation time distribution may prove important in relation to biodegradable elastomers and materials with exceptional low-frequency dissipation, extending at least 12 decades below the onset of the rubbery plateau.

Mechanisms of internal curing water release from retentive and non-retentive superabsorbent polymers in cement paste

This paper examines the mechanisms of desorption within cement pastes for superabsorbent polymers (SAP) with different sorption kinetics: retentive and non-retentive (self-releasing). Despite the different behavior in solution, both SAP types mitigated the autogenous shrinkage of cement pastes. {sup 1}H NMR and X-ray tomography showed that the cavities formed by both SAP types were saturated until 9–11 h after mixing, while the entrained water in the cavities redistributed to the cement matrix afterwards. In particular, the non-retentive SAP might have rapidly released the absorbed water, but the released water stayed in the original cavities. Therefore, the behavior of the SAP in the pore solution may not completely determine their internal curing performance in cement pastes. In particular, the initial absorption that forms the solution-filled cavities might be more important than whether the SAP are able to retain the solution for extended periods of time or not.

Assembly of Close–Packed Ferroelectric Polymer Nanowires via Interface–Epitaxy with ReS 2

The flexible, transparent, and low-weight nature of ferroelectric polymers makes them promising for wearable electronic and optical applications. To reach the full potential of the polarization-enabled device functionalities, large-scale fabrication of polymer thin films with well-controlled polar directions is called for, which remains a central challenge. The widely exploited Langmuir–Blodgett, spin-coating, and electrospinning methods only yield polymorphous or polycrystalline films, where the net polarization is compromised. Here, an easily scalable approach is reported to achieve poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) P(VDF-TrFE) thin films composed of close-packed crystalline nanowires via interface-epitaxy with 1T'-ReS 2 . Upon controlled thermal treatment, uniform P(VDF-TrFE) films restructure into about 10 and 35 nm-wide (010)-oriented nanowires that are crystallographically aligned with the underlying ReS 2 , as revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Piezoresponse force microscopy studies confirm the out-of-plane polar axis of the nanowire films and reveal coercive voltages as low as 0.1 V. Reversing the polarization can induce a conductance switching ratio of >10 8 in bilayer ReS 2 , over six orders of magnitude higher than that achieved by an untreated polymer gate. Lastly, this study points to a cost-effective route to large-scale processing of high-performance ferroelectric polymer thin films for flexible energy-efficient nanoelectronics.
