Nonradiative relaxation in tunable solid state laser crystals

The characteristics of nonradiative transitions between the 4T2 and 2E excited states of trivalent-chromium-ion-activated ruby (containing 0.04 percent Cr2O3 by weight) and alexandrite (containing 0.4 at. percent chromium ion) laser crystals were studied using the technique described by Gayen et al. (1985). In this technique, a 527-nm pulse excites the 4T2 band of the Cr(3+), and the subsequent population kinetics among excited states is monitored by an IR picosecond probe pulse as a function of pump-probe delay. In ruby, a resolution-limited sharp rise in the excited state population was followed by a long-lifetime decay, leading to an upper limit of 7 ps for the 4T2-state nonradiative lifetime. In alexandrite, a longer rise time was followed by a multicomponent decay. A theoretical model is proposed for explaining the induced absorption and the transition dynamics observed in these crystals.

A tunable, solid, Fabry-Perot etalon for solar seismology

A solid etalon has been designed and fabricated from a 50-mm diameter wafer of optical-quality lithium niobate. The finished etalon has a free spectral range of 0.325 nm at 588 nm. The parallel faces are coated with silver, and the central 15-mm aperture of the etalon has a finesse of 18.6. The reflective faces double as electrodes, and application of voltage will shift the passband. This feature was used in a servo circuit to stabilize the passband against temperature and tilt-induced drifts to better than three parts in one billion. Operated in the stabilized mode for day-long sessions, this filter alternately samples the wings of a narrow atomic absorption line in the solar spectrum and produces a signal proportional to velocity on the solar disk. The Fourier transform of this signal yields information on acoustic waves in the solar interior.

Tunable ultraviolet laser studies of photon-molecular interactions of cometary interest

Most of the cometary radicals are thought to be formed in the coma by photodissociation processes. Successful modeling of the coma requires a detailed knowledge of the products that are formed from the various parent molecules and the energy partitioning among these products. This information has to be obtained as a function of wavelength, because the sun is not a monochromatic source. In this review, the status of the experimental knowledge of some key molecules is discussed, along with the prospects of some new laboratory techniques that can fill in the gaps in the present knowledge.

NO2 heterodyne frequency measurements with a tunable diode laser, a CO laser transfer oscillator and CO2 laser standards

Heterodyne frequency measurements have been made on selected groups of nitrogen dioxide rovibronic transitions between 1580.8 and 1650.7/cm. The groups are separated by 7 to 10/cm, and the intent is to provide a limited (and interim) calibration table for the region. In addition to a table of measured frequencies in the region, figures of spectra in the vicinity of the measured lines are included to provide a map for identifying the transitions measured.

Growth and characterization of materials for tunable lasers in the near infrared spectral region

During this reporting period, work proceeded in two directions. The first was the development of crystal growth procedures for rare earth doped LiYF4 crystals. The procedures for growth and pre-growth treatment of starting materials for undoped LiYF4 crystals were established and good optical quality materials were grown. A significant amount of time was spent trying to establish the optimum growth parameters for Yb(3+)-doped crystals. Unfortunately, it has proven difficult to obtain large size boules of high optical quality crystals of LiYF4 with doping concentrations of Yb(3+) of several percent. Because of these problems, this research is to be changed to attempt doping with other trivalent rare earth ions such as Ho, Er, and Tm. The second research area was investigating the potential of LiNbO3:Mg,Cr and LiNbO3:Mg,Cr,Yb as possible laser materials. The results are summarized.

Single-tone and two-tone AM-FM spectral calculations for tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy

A generalized theory for optical heterodyne spectroscopy with phase modulated laser radiation is used which allows the calculation of signal line shapes for frequency modulation spectroscopy of Lorentzian gas absorption lines. In particular, synthetic spectral line shapes for both single-tone and two-tone modulation of lead-salt diode lasers are presented in which the contributions from both amplitude and frequency modulations are included.

Stratospheric composition measurements of earth and Titan using high-resolution tunable diode laser spectroscopy

Field and laboratory measurements of species of atmospheric interest made as part of the JPL diode laser spectroscopy program are presented. Stratospheric measurements of NO2, NO, CO2, and H2O made in November 1985 using the BLISS instrument are reported, together with recent laboratory measurements of spectral line parameters of HNO3 and HO2NO2. In addition, a novel diode laser instrument concept for the in situ sensing of Titan's atmosphere is described for the Saturn Orbiter/Titan Probe (SOTP) Cassini Mission.

Evaluation of materials for tunable vibronic lasers

Three techniques (peak single-pass gain, fluoresence band narrowing, and lifetime shortening) for determining the effects of stimulated emission on the spectra of solid-state vibronic laser materials have been compared. The methods were employed to determine the pump energy density and population inversion at threshold, the stimulated emission cross section, and the gain coefficient for two potential vibronic laser materials. An effective shortening of the fluorescence lifetime is predicted at high excitation levels, with a distinct threshold where stimulated emission processes become important.

Multiple relaxation and inhomogeneous broadening in resonance enhanced Raman scattering - Application to tunable infrared generation

The solutions for the imaginary susceptibility of the Raman field transition with arbitrary relaxation rates and field strengths are examined for differing sets of relaxation rates with emphasis on alkali metal vapors which have spontaneous emission dominated relaxation. The model is further expanded to include Doppler broadening and used to predict the peak gain as a function of detuning for a frequency doubled alexandrite laser-pumped cesium vapor gain cell.

Growth and characterization of materials for tunable lasers in the near infrared spectral region

Laser spectroscopy, crystal growth, and radiation damage research was performed. The laser spectroscopy effort focused on understanding the effects of excited state absorption processes involving pump photons. This was performed on a variety of rare earth ions in different hosts. The crystal growth and radiation damage effort focused on LiFY4 (YLF) doped with rare earth ions. The results of this work is described.

In situ stratospheric measurements of HNO3 and HCl near 30 km using the balloon-borne laser in situ sensor tunable diode laser spectrometer

In situ stratospheric measurements of the concentrations of the reservoir species HNO3 and HCl made during two flights of the high-resolution (0.0005/cm) balloon-borne laser in situ sensor instrument from Palestine, Texas, are reported. A measured HNO3 volume mixing ratio of 4.3 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) at 31 km altitude is about 1 ppbv larger than previously reported measurements at 32 deg N. An HCl mixing ratio of 1.6 ppbv at 29 km is in agreement with values obtained from earlier remote sensing techniques within the experimental uncertainties. Upper limits at 31 km of 0.4 ppbv for H2O2 and 0.2 ppbv for HOCl are also derived from analyses of spectra recorded near 1252/cm.

Accurate frequency of the 119 micron methanol laser from tunable far-infrared absorption spectroscopy

High-accuracy absorption spectroscopy of CH3OH in the far infrared is discussed. In addition to 22 transitions in the ground state, the frequency of the (n, tau, J, K), (0, 1, 16, 8) to (0, 2, 15, 7) transition in the nu5 excited vibrational level, which is responsible for the laser emission at 119 microns, was measured. The measured frequency is 2,522,782.57(10) MHz at zero pressure, with a pressure shift of 6.1(32) kHz/Pa (0.805/420/ MHz/torr). An accurate remeasurement of the laser emission frequency has also been performed, and the results are in good agreement.
