IDAES-PSE 2.5.0 Release

The Institute for the Design of Advanced Energy Systems (IDAES) Integrated Platform is a versatile computational environment offering extensive process systems engineering (PSE) capabilities for optimizing the design and operation of complex, interacting technologies and systems. IDAES enables users to efficiently search vast, complex design spaces to discover the lowest cost, most environmentally sustainable solutions while supporting the full process modeling lifecycle, from conceptual design to dynamic optimization and control. The extensible, open platform empowers users to create models of novel processes and rapidly develop custom analyses, workflows, and end-user applications. IDAES-PSE 2.5.0 Release Highlights Upcoming Changes IDAES will be switching to the new Pyomo solver interface in the next release. Whilst this will hopefully be a smooth transition for most users, there are a few important changes to be aware of. The new solver interface uses a different version of the IPOPT writer (“ipopt_v2”) and thus any custom configuration options you might have set for IPOPT will not carry over and will need to be reset. By default, the new Pyomo linear presolver will be activated with ipopt_v2. Whilst are working to identify any bugs in the presolver, it is possible that some edge cases will remain. IDAES will begin deploying a new set of scaling tools and APIs over the next few releases that make use of the new solver writers. The old scaling tools and APIs will remain for backward compatibility but will begin to be deprecated. New Models, Tools and Features New diagnostics check for near-parallel variables and constraints. New diagnostics tools for identifying causes of infeasibility in models. New example for creating a custom model of a liquid-liquid extractor unit operation. Bug Fixes Fixed bug in Gibbs reactor that caused it to appear to have additional spurious degrees of freedom. Fixed bug in the Modular Property Framework that would cause errors when trying to use phase-based material balances with phase equilibria. Fixed bug in Modular Properties Framework that caused errors when initializing models with non-vapor-liquid phase equilibria. Testing and Robustness Deployed the IDAES Diagnostics Toolbox to confirm that there are no structural or numerical issues in the core model libraries. Additional robustness tests for core model, and some associated improvements in the converge tester class. Fixed a number of issues that were causing unexpected warnings to be emitted during testing. Deprecations and Removals Removed examples for RIPE tool which has not been supported for a number of releases.

Modeling Water Vapor Transport at Liquid/Membrane Interfaces for Applications in Liquid Desiccant Air Conditioners (CRADA CRD-17-679 Final Report)

Conventional compressor-based cooling has undergone incremental changes over the past 100 years. Further improvements in efficiency require evermore complex systems, especially under humid conditions. Meso-porous membranes offer unique opportunities for efficient humidity control in buildings using an absorbent desiccant solution, but membranes are not designed or optimized for this purpose. This project will use molecular dynamic simulations to determine optimal membrane properties for these air conditioning applications, focusing on the membrane properties at the membrane/liquid/air interface. Optimal membrane designs will enable smaller, more durable, and less expensive designs of these membrane air conditioning systems.

Electronic Structure and Spin Correlations in Novel Magnetic Structures

The research has advanced understanding of the interrelation between the crystal structure and magnetism in several materials which are or can be of interest for the development of improved, specialized or more cost-effective permanent magnets, as well as in selected materials for biomedical and catalytic applications. Fundamental aspects of ferromagnetism were investigated for Mn-Ge, Co-V and Co-Ge nanoclusters and for melt-spun Co-Sn alloys. New solution-chemistry synthesis methods were designed and tested for Fe-Pt, Fe3C and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Off-stoichiometric Laves phases in the Fe-Si-Zr, Fe-Nb and Fe-Ta systems, as well as Fe5(Si,Ge)B2 compounds were assessed as new rare-earth-free permanent magnet materials; all except the Fe-Si-Zr Laves phases were found to be promising enough to merit a further exploration. A new method for manufacturing rare-earth-free magnets based on the MnBi compound was developed; by purposely avoiding oxidation-sensitive fine single-crystalline powders, the new method yields magnets with a 50% larger energy storage capacity. Studies of rare-earth-lean permanent-magnet materials (lean compared to the currently predominant Nd-Fe-B materials) were focused on the tetragonal compound of the ThMn12 structure type and included both discovery and characterization of new formulations and exploration of new fabrication/processing techniques. Among the most significant achievements were successful preparation of a vanadium-lean SmFe11V compound, the first observation of thermomechanically induced texture in nanocrystalline Sm(Fe,V)12 alloys, and a breakthrough reduction-diffusion synthesis of Sm1-xZrx(Fe0.8Co0.2)11.2Ti0.8 single-crystal particles with a coercivity as high as 12.6 kOe. Several experiments aimed at improvement of the Nd-Fe-B magnet have also been undertaken including a five-fold increase of the coercivity through a grain-boundary diffusion treatment of a Nd10Fe84B6 nanocrystalline alloy.

Mitigate: An Adaptive Network Data Anonymization Tool Using Condensation-Based Differential Privacy

Modern network devices collect a large amount of data that can be analyzed to identify bottlenecks, anomalies, cyber-attacks, etc. Therefore, there is often a need to analyze such collections of network data quite often by an external expert or by the research community. However, these collections of data contain sensitive, proprietary information. In order for the network data to be shared, it must first be anonymized. The overall objective of this project is to develop an innovative privacy management tool to anonymize network data and achieve sufficient privacy, acceptable data utility, and efficient data analysis at the same time. No existing anonymization methods can achieve all of these at the same time. The core of this technology is a differential private clustering algorithm that provides strong privacy protection, preserves data properties important for subsequent analysis, and allows the party receiving the anonymized data to conduct analysis directly on anonymized data without the need of decryption or any extra processing. The research carried out was to design, implement and verify a solution to this problem by completing the following tasks: 1) developing the core technology; 2) developing a context based method that automatically recommends fields that must be anonymized; 3) conducted experiments showing superior results using our approach compared to existing tools, and 4) developed an intuitive but basic user interface. The research that was conducted generated novel algorithmic techniques that utilize state-of-the-art methods such as condensation, differential privacy preservation, clustering, automated tuning based on contextual awareness, and recommendation techniques to specify columns to users for anonymization leading to optimal privacy that allows research analysis on the dataset. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of these novel algorithmic techniques by performing analysis on original non-anonymized datasets, then conducting analysis on the same yet anonymized datasets and comparing the results of the analyses. Overall, the anonymized analysis results were within 1% of the original results, verifying that the generated technology not only guarantees a high level of privacy but also enables research analysis as if it were conducted on the original dataset. Potential applications of this technology include anonymization of any type of structured network datasets that contain sensitive identifiers, such as IP addresses, that can be used in multiple applications. For example, to create an AI or machine learning model for cyber security, e.g., to detect attacks, or for performance analysis, e.g., identify bottlenecks or predict performance. In addition, a market analysis that was conducted for potential applications of this technology identified a broader range of applications of our anonymization technology beyond the network sector that includes healthcare, banking, insurance, securities, finance (FISB), data brokering, cloud services, ad sales, and government.

Phase I Summary of Management Activities - Advanced Construction Technology Initiative Project

As the end of the year is approached, it is essential to review the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) management activities undertaken during the Advanced Construction Technology Initiative (ACTI) project. The ACTI project was launched to support a transformation in nuclear energy construction, management, and deployment costs, enabling nuclear energy to make important contributions to the energy systems of the future. This transformation will increase the confidence of investors, energy system planners, policymakers, and ultimately consumers in the capability of nuclear energy to meet future needs; thus, it represents a critical element of advanced nuclear energy system demonstration. Development and/or demonstration project(s) will consider regulatory requirements for commercial nuclear implementation and will incorporate strategies to develop regulator experience and review of the technology. GE Hitachi (GEH), a leading player in the nuclear industry that offers a range of products and services including nuclear reactor design, fuel supply, and decommissioning solutions, submitted a proposal for the ACTI project. GEH was awarded the contract for the first phase of the project.

Powernet in Farms Project

Coordinating behind-the-meter (BTM) distributed energy resources (DERs) is critical to ensuring efficiency and reliability for consumers facing an increasingly variable grid supply. Outside of very controlled environments, however, such coordination of heterogeneous resources at scale has remained a challenge due to harsh field conditions, the lack of adequate communication infrastructure, and the difficulty of modeling the system. The intent of this research was to refine the Powernet system deployed in a California dairy farm to achieve the following objectives: a) validate the results of the previous deployment and b) validate new hypothesis about system performance based on the simulation of the new system. The new system design would reduce the overall system cost, and achieve a payback period of less than 3 years, demonstrating the feasibility of such system and its relevance for a segment not well known for technology advancements in power systems. The new proposed system was significantly cheaper than the original design, which would enable the solution to be cost effective and likely economically viable. However, due to significant delays in project start date which affected funding availability, overlap with prior scheduled mandatory military leave from key members of the project team, and customer drop-out, due to the significant delays, which could not be replaced in time, caused the project to be ended prior to completion.

AI‐Accelerated Optimization of Self‐Assembled Organic Mixed Ionic‐Electronic Conductors (OMIEC) (Final Report)

This document describes research activities, products and outcomes of a DOE-funded program to help accelerate development of Organic Mixed Ionic Electronic Conductors (OMIECs) using neutron scattering and high-throughput experimentation. OMIECs are organic materials that conduct both ionic and electronic charge carriers. For these new OMIEC materials, self-assembling ion-conducting block copolymers (BCPs) are used as a structural template for electronic conducting polymers. This forms OMIECs with long-range structural order that can help facilitate long-range electronic transport. The conductive properties of OMIECs are closely associated with their structure, which is affected by solution conditions and polymer macromolecular designs. Thus high-throughput experimentation has been implemented to explore this large design space effectively. The BCP-CP OMIEC systems explored are composed of ion-conducting diblock or triblock copolymers containing polyethylene oxide (PEO), di(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether acrylate (DEGEEA) or poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate) (PEGMEA) hydrophilic blocks. These blocks will be coupled with either polypropylene oxide (PPO) or polyheptafluorobutyl acrylate (PHFBA) hydrophobic blocks to drive assembly. The electronic conducting component consists of several different types of conjugated polymers. Small angle scattering of neutrons and X-rays (SANS/SAXS) as well as electrochemical analysis have been coupled with modern algorithms for autonomous research using artificial intelligence (AI).

Energy Requirements for Integration of Nuclear Reactors with Iron and Steel Plants

This report identifies energy needs of heavy energy users within the domestic iron and steel industry and suggests solutions for integrating nuclear energy. The iron and steel industry, composed of several types of plants which perform different processes with varied energy demands and vectors, is a heavy consumer of electric power and fossil fuels including coke and natural gas. Almost all major process temperatures exceed the temperatures of direct heat available from advanced reactors, and so electricity and hydrogen were considered instead. Reference units were adopted and estimated energy demands computed for the blast furnace (BF), direct reduced iron (DRI) unit, electric arc furnace (EAF), and reheat furnaces. By utilizing production capacity data from industry reports, the ranges of power demands were estimated, including for hydrogen production by high temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE). For the EAF and DRI unit, more detailed integration studies with thermodynamic modeling were also conducted and determined a possible solution with a specific reactor design and number of modules. Furthermore, because many unit processes are co-located, entire plants were considered by adding the energy demands of the unit processes to form four hypothetical reference plants. The range of power needs for the reference plants is compatible with multi-unit banks of microreactors at the low end, and would create a need for multiple larger-capacity SMRs at the high end (1 GWe plus 0.14 GWt). Although the overall power need at the high end is well-matched with one present-day large reactor offering (1.1 GWe), redundancy considerations may require a minimum of two reactors, potentially eliminating the single large reactor from consideration. Auxiliary or house loads would increase the reference plant estimates. Finally, the report provides total estimated energy needs under integration of all U.S. units of each process (BF, DRI, EAF, and reheat furnaces), representing a national potential for nuclear energy in the industry. U.S. iron and steel plants may be candidates for integration with nuclear reactors via electricity and hydrogen, and many sites have energy requirements that correspond well to the capacities of several advanced nuclear power designs.

Traction of elastohydrodynamic contacts with thermal shearing flow

The formulation and solution for the shear stress and temperature in heavily loaded sliding elastohydrodynamic contacts is presented. The solutions are presented in dimensionless design charts. Integration over the contact area will yield the traction. Accuracy is expected to be very good over the nearly flat part of the contact area where the majority of the sliding traction is generated. The procedure presented is not appropriate for thick film lubrication, for the inlet region, or for the rolling friction of elastohydrodynamic contacts.

Estimation of transonic aircraft aerodynamics to high angles of attack

A recently developed method for estimating transonic aircraft aerodynamics to high angles of attack which is especially suited to computerized aircraft design and optimization studies is described. Following theoretical and empirical guidelines, explicit nonlinear equations are formulated for subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speeds; new algorithms are used for assessing compressibility effects and for analyzing transonic, shock-dominated flows which adhere to Laitone's limit Mach-number criterion. Viscous dominated flows are not analyzed. The transonic influence of viscosity is indirectly accommodated by assigning designated inputs rather than extracted solutions for the chordwise locations of shock and separation. The method is extended to complete aircraft configurations by including accounts for nose lift, the wing downwash field, and tail lift. Several comparisons of experiment and estimate are included.

A distributed microcomputer telemetry system for spacecraft applications

Distributed microcomputer telemetry system design difficulties are examined and solutions to these difficulties are discussed. In the telemetry system being considered, the data gathering is actually distributed among a number of computers, each with its own commutation cycle, data storage buffers, and specified set of measurements to be sampled. A computer based high level module controls the formation of the final telemetry stream by accessing individual computer's data storage buffers at the appropriate time and inserting them into the telemetry stream. Attention is given to the precise time tagging of data samples, the interconnection of several computers, the autonomous operation of science instruments, and reliability considerations.
