Intersection of parametric surfaces using lookup tables

When primitive structures in the form of parametric surfaces are combined and modified interactively to form complex intersecting surfaces, it becomes important to find the curves of intersection. One must distinguish between finding the shape of the intersection curve, which may only be useful for display purposes, and finding an accurate mathematical representation of the curve, which is important for any meaningful geometric modeling, analysis, design, or manufacturing involving the intersection. The intersection curve between two or more parametric surfaces is important in a variety of computer-aided design and manufacture areas. A few examples are shape design, analysis of groins, design of fillets, and computation of numerically controlled tooling paths. The algorithm presented here provides a mathematical representation of the intersection curve to a specified accuracy. It also provides the database that can simplify operations such as hidden-surface removal, surface rendering, profile identification, and interference or clearance computations.

An interactive modeling program for the generation of planar polygons for boundary type solids representations of wire frame models

The development of a general link between three dimensional wire frame models and rigid solid models is discussed. An interactive computer graphics program was developed to serve as a front end to an algorithm (COSMIC Program No. ARC-11446) which offers a general solution to the hidden line problem where the input data is either line segments of n-sided planar polygons of the most general type with internal boundaries. The program provides a general interface to CAD/CAM data bases and is implemented for models created on the Unigraphics VAX 11/780-based CAD/CAM systems with the display software written for DEC's VS11 color graphics devices.

Reliability with imperfect diagnostics

A reliability estimation method for systems that continually accumulate faults because of imperfect diagnostics is developed and an application for redundant digital avionics is presented. The present method assumes that if a fault does not appear in a short period of time, it will remain hidden until a majority of components are faulty and the system fails. A certain proportion of a component's faults are detected in a short period of time, and a description of their detection is included in the reliability model. A Markov model of failure during flight for a nonreconfigurable five-plex is presented for a sequence of one-hour flights followed by maintenance.

Physical Properties of Neptune and Triton Inferred from the Orbit of Triton

The orbital motion of Triton was redetermined from photographic data spanning the interval 1899-1981. The resulting ephemeris should provide Triton positions with respect to Neptune with an accuracy of plus or minus 500 km through the end of the century. The following physical results follow from the orbit solution. The inverse mass of Neptune + Triton is solar mass over (c sub N + m sub T) = 19490 plus or minus 40. No acceleration of the mean motion nor orbital eccentricity were detected, thus constraining the tidal dissipation factors of Neptune and Triton to O sub N less than or equal to 650 and QT less than or equal to 10,000. Tidal heating of Triton is presently insignificant. The gravitational harmonic J sub 2 of Neptune is 0.0043 plus or minus 0.0003 if Triton is as massive as m sub T/ M sub N = 0.00128, and if Neptune's spin is prograde with P approximately 18(h), or J sub 2 = 0.0037 plus or minus 0.0002 if Triton is much less massive. Triton undergoes extreme climatic variations due to the combined motion of it's orbit plane and Neptune's orbital motion. Approximately 10% of Triton's surface is presently hidden from diurnal insolation, which may provide a powerful cold trap for atmospheric voltatiles.

Infrared mapping of galaxian centers: Star forming regions with kiloparsec scale sizes

A 1 to 20 micron mapping of the centers of galaxies encompassing the regions that extend out to several kiloparsecs from the nuclei is reviewed. Power emerging at or = 5 microns is a direct measure of the number of young stars present. This conclusion is strongly supported by the large-scale association of the infrared-emitting regions with visual continuum and line emission indicative of young stars, and by the similarity of the energy distributions to those of Galactic HII region/molecular cloud complexes. Much of the young-star activity is completely hidden from view. At shorter wavelengths, a variety of processes, including bremsstrahlung, are evident.

A scanning laser velocimeter for turbulence research

Turbulent and unsteady separated flows occur on most practical flight vehicles, but are not yet sufficiently understood for designs to provide safe margins of performance without recourse to extensive experiment and computation. In date, reliable experimental data for even basic flows is severely limited and does not yet provide a satisfactory data base with which to assess current design and calculation methods. Although the laser velocimeter (LV) has become a proven, nonintrusive instrument for the measurement of local mean velocities and turbulence properties, measurements have been of a mean, statistical nature derived from averages accumulated independently at different positions in the flow. Thus, the measurements do not give an instantaneous dynamic, picture of the flow-field structures. Accordingly, a new technique for rapid LV scans of turbulent flow fields was proposed. The potential of this new instrument for fundamental fluid mechanical measurements of turbulent flows has been demonstrated. The results clearly show that significant unsteady flow features are hidden by conventional measurements and that the scanning laser velocimeter should prove an invauable tool in future studies of the structure of turbulent flows.

Cyg X-3: Not seen in high-energy gamma rays by COS-B

COS-B had Cyg X-3 within its field of view during 7 observation periods between 1975 and 1982 for in total approximately 300 days. In the skymaps (70 meV E 5000 meV) of the Cyg-X region produced for each of these observations and in the summed map, a broad complex structure is visible in the region 72 deg approximately less than 1 approximately less than 85 deg, approximately less than 5 deg. No resolved source structure is visible at the position of Cyg X-3, but a weak signal from Cyg X-3 could be hidden in the structured gamma-ray background. Therefore, the data has been searched for a 4.8 h timing signature, as well as for a source signal in the sky map in addition to the diffuse background structure as estimated from tracers of atomic and molecular gas.

Epsilon Aurigae

In April 1984, fourth contact ended the two year long eclipse of Epsilon Aurigae. An astrometric study of the study of the system was carried out by Van de kamp (1978) leading to the conclusion that the orbit is seen very close to edge on. The eclipse was monitored by a number of groups from the ground and from spacecraft such as the IUE. Ultraviolet observations of the system from IUE have thrown new light on the nature of the system that led to the conclusion that the secondary object is probably a cold, dusty accretion disk surrounding a star that is completely hidden inside the disk.

ADAMS: AIRLAB data management system user's guide

The AIRLAB Data Management System (ADAMS) is an online environment that supports research at NASA's AIRLAB. ADAMS provides an easy to use interactive interface that eases the task of documenting and managing information about experiments and improves communication among project members. Data managed by ADAMS includes information about experiments, data sets produced, software and hardware available in AIRLAB as well as that used in a particular experiment, and an on-line engineer's notebook. The User's Guide provides an overview of the ADAMS system as well as details of the operations available within ADAMS. A tutorial section takes the user step-by-step through a typical ADAMS session. ADAMS runs under the VAX/VMS operating system and uses the ORACLE database management system and DEC/FMS (the Forms Management System). ADAMS can be run from any VAX connected via DECnet to the ORACLE host VAX. The ADAMS system is designed for simplicity, so interactions within the underlying data management system and communications network are hidden from the user.

Is Jupiter's ionosphere a significant plasma source for its magnetosphere?

A semikinetic model was used to study the steady state, collisionless, polar wind outflow from the Jovian polar caps. H(+)-escape fluxes and energies were calculated for a range of conditions, including several values of the ambient electron temperature, different hot electron populations, and both with and without the effects of the centrifugal force. The calculations indicate that if hot electron populations exist over the Jovian polar caps, as they do on earth, polar wind escape fluxes of the order of 10 to the 8th per sq cm s are possible. When integrated over the polar cap area, escape fluxes of this order of magnitude imply an ionospheric source strength of 2 x 10 to the 28th ions/s, which is comparable to the present estimate of the total magnetospheric plasma source population. Therefore, the ionosphere may play an important role in populating the Jovian magnetosphere, specifically the hidden, low energy, light ion component of the population.

The composition and structure of planetary rings

The properties of planetary ring systems are summarized herein; emphasis is given to the available evidence on their compositions and to their dynamical attributes. Somewhat contaminated water ice makes up the vast expanse of Saturn's rings. Modified methane ice may comprise Uranus' rings while silicates are the likely material of the Jovian ring. Saturn's rings form an elaborate system whose characteristics are still being documented and whose nature is being unravelled following the Voyager flybys. Uranus' nine narrow bands display an intriguing dynamical structure thought to be caused by unseen shephard satellites. Jupiter's ring system is a mere wisp, probably derived as ejecta off hidden parent bodies.

Inflation and shadow matter

The possible production of shadow matter during the period of cosmic inflation is considered. The superstring theory of Gross et al. (1985), which results in a gauge group E8 x E8, could, at low energies, result in the existence of two sectors: an observed sector associated with all familiar particles and interactions, and a hidden one whose particles couple only through gravitational interactions with ordinary matter. It is demonstrated here that if, in the early universe, an inflationary phase is associated with the breaking of one of the symmetries in the E8 x E8 theory, this strongly constrains the physics of both sectors if shadow matter is to be the missing mass in the universe.

Comment on the three-body theory for period changes in RS CVn systems

In the three-body theory for period variations in RS CVn systems, the timing residuals are interpreted as light-travel time differences as the eclipsing system moves about the barycenter of the triple. These residuals can require a larger orbit than Kepler's law allows, given the time scale of the period variations. For only two of eight systems investigated, SV Cam and V471 Tau, is the theory plausible in that the inferred barycentric motion of the binary is smaller than the orbit of the third body, and the inferred properties of the third body are both reasonable and consistent with its remaining hidden. The theory is thus not a general theory for period changes. Observational testing of the theory is straightforward and may lead to the detection of 'brown dwarfs' associated with eclipsing systems through their kinematic effects.

Global petrologic variations of the Moon: A ternary-diagram approach

A ternary-diagram approach is used to show on a single map as much detailed geochemical information concerning petrologic variations within the lunar crust as is possible. The classification map shows the global spatial distributions of end-member compositions, the transitional spatial relations between end-member compositions, and quantitative estimates of relative proportions of each end member at each pixel location within the orbital groundtracks. The use of elemental ratios in this analysis, instead of the commonly used elemental bivariate diagrams, shows geologic information that is otherwise hidden in individual elemental databases.
